Davide Marletta

PORTLAND -- Some people, though plagued by disease, disability or disadvantage, carry on, unphased, unperturbed and unrelenting in their life goals. Davide Marletta, of Portland was one such individual. He passed away Friday, July 7, 2006, at Maine Medical Center, having finally lost his life-long struggle with diabetes.

Davide Marletta was born in Glasgow, Scotland, Feb. 9, 1946, the only child of parents Italia Lopes and David Marletta. Seeking better opportunities for their son, the Marlettas immigrated to America in 1951 settling in Levittown, N.Y., and later to Cape Porpoise. He eventually lost his vision in his later 20s due to diabetic eye disease. With the support of The State Division for the Blind and Visually Impaired he eventually finished his BA in social work and a Master's Degree in rehabilitation counseling. He held employment for 25 years at The Iris Network in Portland, formerly The Maine Center for the Blind, as an adjustment counselor for people dealing with vision loss. He will be remembered for his quick wit, charisma and ability to always lend an ear to anyone who needed to talk.

He was an executive board member of Pine Tree Guide Dog Users Group, a non-profit organization promoting the well being of guide dog users in the state of Maine. He was also on the board of Glenridge Condominium where he resided. His blindness didn't prevent him from enjoying model railroading and NASCAR racing.

During that time period, he also owned and operated the Schuss Ski Shop in Rome, N.Y. He became a district sales manager for the Jewel Tea Company in New York state and a district sales manager for Coffee Pause in southern and central Maine.

He was a natural-born athlete and avid Yankees fan. He loved skiing, fishing, playing bocce on the beach, and a good pitch game any time of day. Neil Diamond, Elvis Presley, Acta Non Verba, and the Redding Buccaneers Drum Corp were the soundtracks of his life. As an adoring father, stepfather, grandfather, and husband, he was an endlessly giving and selfless person with an outrageous sense of humor.
