John Fraser

KENNEBUNK — John Francis “Jack” Fraser, 86, of Huntington Common, died the evening of April 2, 2006, at Southern Maine Medical Center surrounded by his family.

He was born in Portland on June 12, 1919, the son of John R. and Maria M. (Williams) Fraser. He was educated in the Portland school system and graduated from Portland High School.

In 1943, he entered the United States Navy and proudly served his country during World War II in the Seabees as a shipfitter. He was assigned to the 118th Naval Construction Battalion, followed by the 11th Naval Construction Battalion both in the South Pacific.

Following the war, and after his discharge, he married June Lowell on Jan. 17, 1946. From the time of his discharge until his retirement in the mid 1990s, he was a building contractor in North Windham. Additionally, in the last 20 years of his career, he was a boat builder, and known for his expert craftsmanship. In 1959, he and his work crew built the Parish House of the North Windham Union Church. In addition to home and boat building, he was an early designer of fiberglass cockpits in military jets, and water wheels for hydroelectric plants. In earlier years, he enjoyed building model airplanes. He won numerous state championships for both the construction and flying of these model airplanes.

His family was always number one in his life. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren. He thoroughly enjoyed construction projects of any kind; his life was his work. He also enjoyed playing cribbage, and his cats, one of which lived to the age of 23. In later years, he and June enjoyed traveling together.

He was a long-time member of the North Windham Union Church, where he served as a deacon and trustee. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows, and the Windham Kiwanis Club for many years. He served on the building committee for the Windham Library.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, of Kennebunk; two daughters, Mr. and Mrs. David (Junellen) Bucknam of Wells, Mr. and Mrs. Mark (Jacklyn) Harriman of Wells; four grandchildren, Kristen Hall, Alicia Libucha, William and Amanda

Harriman; three great-grandchildren, Cameron and Kailey Hall, and Calvin Harriman.

A memorial service for John Fraser will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in the main dining room at Huntington Common, 1 Huntington Common Drive, Kennebunk. There are no visiting hours. Spring burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, North Windham. If desired, memorial donations may be made in his name to the Friends of the Little Meeting House, P.O. Box 962, Windham, ME 04062. Arrangements are under the direction of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

Barbara Curtis

WELLS — Barbara A. Curtis, 70, a resident of Eldridge Road in Moody, died March 31, 2006, at York Hospital unexpectedly.

She was born June 6, 1935, in Concord, N.H., a daughter of Louis and Thena (Thompson) Ansaldo. Her family moved several times before settling in Amherst, Mass., where she graduated from Amherst Regional High School. She pursued a career in nursing and graduated from Franklin County Public Hospital School of Nursing in 1957.

She worked at the Leeds V.A. Hospital in Leeds, Mass.; Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, Mass.; and Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass.

She lived most of her adult life in Greenfield, Mass., before retiring to Maine in 1995.

Predeceasing her are her husband of 39 years, William N. Curtis; brothers Robert and Michael Ansaldo; and her sister, Mary Ansaldo.

Surviving her are two sons, Alan and his wife Holly Curtis, and Christopher Curtis, all of Florence, Mass.; sister Janice Shumway of Amherst, Mass.; and a grandchild, Chelsea.

There will be private services, cremation to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your local Make a Wish Foundation.

Leslie Hanscom

KENNEBUNK — Leslie Hanscom, 82, died on March 10, 2006.

After graduating from Yale, he came to New York to begin a journalism career, first as a reporter for the Brooklyn Eagle, then book editor of the World Telegram & Sun, later joining Newsweek and then The Saturday Evening Post. He interrupted his career to serve in the Peace Corps, returning to join Newsday as a feature columnist and then a book editor until his retirement.

He was predeceased by his parents, Bertram and Helen Hanscom and his brother Henry Hanscom, all of Kennebunk. A son, Peter Hanscom, died at age 11.

He is survived by one daughter, Carol Hanscom, his son-in-law, Thomas F. Kremer Jr. and one grandson, Peter T. Kremer of Binghamton, N.Y.; as well as many dear friends in New York City and Washington, D.C.

Interment of his ashes will take place in the family plot in Evergreen cemetery later in the spring. There will be a memorial service at Grace Church in Brooklyn Heights, New York City, on May 20.

Mary Liversidge

KENNEBUNK — Mary (Parsons) Liversidge died March 31, 2006, in Kennebunk, from complications of pneumonia.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Thomas K. Liversidge; six children; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was born May 5, 1920, in New York City, the daughter of Charles and Mary Parsons. Her mother died when she was only 5 years old. Following her mother’s demise, her father moved to England where they had a home, residing there for a portion of each year, returning to the states most summers. During those years she made some 30 crossings of the Atlantic Ocean.

When war threatened most of Europe, she and her father moved back to the states where they resided alternately between California and Kennebunk. She was married in 1941, to Thomas Liversidge and took up residence in the Main Line area of Philadelphia. During those years she was very active in social programs. Primarily she volunteered in the children’s ward in the Jefferson Hospital, eventually becoming chairman of the volunteer group. She initiated and ran the annual fund-raising affair held at the Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia.

After they moved to Kennebunk in 1973, she served on the board of the Brick Store Museum and was active with the York County Cancer Society, eventually becoming chairman of the group and took charge of operating its annual fund-raising affairs. She served on the vestry of St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Kennebunkport, drove for F.I.S.H and was an active member of the Kennebunk River Club. She loved to entertain and did so graciously and with frequency. She enjoyed gardening, decoupage, needlework, tennis, and of the greatest importance, looking out for and helping other people. She was always at the ready to give of herself, to be there for others and was very much loved. She will be remembered for her enthusiasm for life.

She will be mourned by her wide circle of friends as well as her immediate family. They include her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Fluke and her husband, Gordon of Kennebunk and Philadelphia; five sons, Thomas K. Liversidge Jr. and his wife, Sandra of Kennebunk and Newburyport, Mass., Charles P. and Deborah Liversidge, Newfield, Maine, Horace P. and Peggy Liversidge of Kennebunk, Joseph Liversidge of Fleetwood, Pa., and Alexander and Jillian Liversidge of Kennebunk.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, in St. David’s Episcopal Church in Kennebunk.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Animal Welfare Society, P.O. Box 43, West Kennebunk, 04094.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Lawrence Welch

MOODY — Lawrence “Duke” Alden Welch, 73, of Old County Road, passed away April 1, 2006, in York Hospital.

He was born in Dover, N.H., on May 20, 1932, a son of Alden and Ruth (Reeves) Welch. He worked for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in transportation.

He loved people and had many friends who he enjoyed spending time with. He enjoyed spending time at his cabin in the Tatnic woods. He especially loved his two grandsons, Bronson and Morgan.

He was pre-deceased by his father, Alden and his sister, Harriet Cheney.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Jeannette (Roberge) Welch of Moody; his mother, Ruth (Reeves) Welch of South Berwick; one daughter, Debora Welch-Thompson and her husband, Mark of Kennebunk; twin sons, Peter Welch and his partner, Michael Stone of Kittery Point and Paul Welch of Boston, Mass.; one sister, Madalene Cole of North Berwick; two grandsons, Bronson and Morgan Welch-Thompson of Kennebunk; and nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life was held Monday, at the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. Interment in Hillside cemetery in North Berwick will be at a later date.

Friends who wish may contribute to the American Heart Association, PO Box 3034, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Elizabeth H. Johnson

Elizabeth H. Johnson, 94, who passed away Feb. 24, 2006, will be laid to rest in Hillside cemetery in North Berwick on Friday at 1 p.m. The Rev. Robert G. Cole Sr. will officiate. Arrangements are by the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Edward Baines

KENNEBUNKPORT —Edward Baines, 72, of Goose Rocks Beach, died Feb. 28, 2006, at Southern Maine Medical Center after a long illness.

He was born in Manchester, N.H., on March 17, 1933, the son of James and Alice (Griffiths) Baines.

He graduated from Manchester West High School and Boston University where he earned his BA degree in business.

He worked for the Bank of New Hampshire for many years and retired from there as Senior Vice President of Operations.

Mr. Baines served his country in the US Army during the Korean War and married Joan A. Jakaitis on May 29, 1954.

He was active in coaching youth hockey and Babe Ruth Baseball in Concord, N.H., was an avid train collector, and was a member of Kiwanis International. He and his wife Joan also enjoyed family gatherings at their home on Goose Rocks Beach.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years of Goose Rocks Beach; one son, Steven E. Baines, and his wife Sarah of Saco; one daughter, Debra Dickinson, and her husband Dan of Essex, Vt.; one sister, Jane Liamos of Nashua, N.H.; and three grandchildren, Bryan, Samantha and Alex.

A funeral was held Friday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, with Rev. Daniel Riggall officiating. Burial followed at Arundel Cemetery.

Evelyn Baruffaldi

OGUNQUIT — Evelyn Beatrice (Austin) Baruffaldi “Bebe,” 87, of Medford, Mass., and Ogunquit, died at her home in Medford on Feb. 28, 2006.

Born in Medford to the late Ernest and Mildred Austin, she lived in Somerville, Mass., for 30 years and Medford, Mass., for the last 50 years. She worked as a bookkeeper in Boston restaurants and was a trader connoisseur of antiques.

Beloved sister of Elizabeth Thibodeau of Medford, Ernest Austin of New York, William Austin of Florida, the late Muriel Farese, Courtney “Chet” Austin and Eleanor Emerson. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and friends.

Funeral from the Keefe Funeral Home, Arlington, Mass., was held Saturday at St. Anthony’s Church in Somerville, Mass. Burial was in Oakgrove Cemetery, Medford, Mass.

Gertrude Cheney

NORTH BERWICK — Gertrude B. Cheney, 83, of Partridge Lane, passed away, March 2, 2006, in H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford surrounded by her family.

She was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on April 14, 1922, a daughter of Charles and Gertrude (Lockhart) Brown. She graduated from Sanford High School.

After graduation, she was employed by the Goodall Mills in Sanford and married Laurence Cheney on April 21, 1946. In April, they would celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

She was a 60-year member of the Eastern Star and also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary Post 87. She was also a former member of the William Hill Fire Dept. Women’s Auxiliary.

She will always be remembered by her grandchildren for the many handmade gifts that were given to them. She will be dearly missed and loved for her open arms for her extended family of grandchildren and all who loved her.

She was pre-deceased by her parents and brothers, Charles, David and Merrill (Bud) Brown.

She is survived by her husband, Laurence Cheney of North Berwick; two sons, Glendon Cheney and his wife, Judith of North Berwick, and Charles Cheney of Wells; her grandchildren, Cristal Ball and her husband Jason of Deerfield, N.H., Marisa Parker and her husband Richard of Wells, Casey and Shannon Cheney of Hudson, N.H., Steven Thompson and Robin Pedro of North Berwick, Teresa Brooks and her husband, Greg of Wells, Sherry Royal and her husband, Kevin of North Berwick, Eric Thompson and his wife, Danielle of Greenville, N.C., and her great-grandchildren, Joshua and Brianna Ball, Kyler and Lindsey Parker, Amy and Michelle Royal, Amanda, Victoria and Ethan Thompson and Lane Brooks. She is also survived by a brother, Franklin Brown and his wife Wanda of Shapleigh; a sister, Gladys Roberts and her husband, George of Alfred; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Brown of Sanford; many nieces and one nephew.

Visiting hours were held on Monday, at the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. At her request, there will be no funeral. Spring Interment in the Oceanview cemetery in Wells. Family flowers only, please.

Albert Hersom Jr.

BIDDEFORD — Albert R. Hersom Jr., 58, died March 1, 2006, at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford after a brief illness.

He was a resident of Bacon Street and formerly of Arundel. He was born in Biddeford, Oct. 9, 1947, a son of Albert R. and Emma Hersom Jr. He attended Arundel schools. He served in the U.S. Army in the late 1960s. For the past several years he was a driver for Twin-City Taxi Company in Biddeford.

He is survived by three sons, Christopher Hersom of Poland, Timm Giggey of Westbrook, and Douglas Hersom of Lewiston; two daughters, Sue Giggey of California and Emma Hersom of Florida; one foster brother, Stephen Emerson of Arundel; two foster sisters, Beverly Emerson and Anita Michaud, both of Arundel; and several grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Kennebunk Baptist Church with the Rev. James King officiating the service. Interment in Emerson Private cemetery in Arundel later in the spring.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 343 Gorham Rd., South Portland, ME 04106.

Gwenn Hoyt

AUGUSTA — Gwenn (Giles) Hoyt, 41, a resident of Augusta, formerly of Kennebunk, died suddenly of a brain aneurysm at Maine Medical Center, Portland, Maine, on, Feb. 26, 2006.

She was born in Newton, Mass., on Nov. 6, 1964, the daughter of Robert A. and Marilyn A. (Hall) Giles of Kennebunk. She moved to Maine with her family in 1967. She was educated in Kennebunk schools and graduated from MSAD 71 as valedictorian of the class of 1983. In 1987, she graduated from Cornell University with a BS degree in electrical engineering. Following graduation, she worked in Vail, Colo. and spent time traveling in Europe. In 1993, she attended the University of Southern Maine and successfully completed the Extended Teacher Education Program.

She taught high school geometry at Erskine Academy in South China, Maine for nine years. She also worked at Justice Planning & Management Associates in Farmingdale, and served as a consultant in web design, graphic design, database management, and computer programming.

She had many interests including camping, skiing, hiking, swimming, photography, cooking, gardening, jewelry making, and crafts. She was very creative and pursued her many activities with an obvious passion. She was a lifelong learner and taught herself many computer skills. She loved working out, healthy eating, and enjoying the Maine coast.

She was a loving wife, caring daughter, and a loyal and devoted sister. Family and family traditions were very important to her, and she helped preserve these traditions by adopting them as her own. She created a cookbook of favorite family recipes illustrated with pictures of the grandparents who created them. This has become a prized family possession. She will be sorely missed by family and friends.

She is survived by her husband of 12 years, Robert P. Hoyt and dog Sadie of Augusta, , her parents, Robert A. and Marilyn A. Giles of Kennebunk, , her brother, Scott M. Giles, wife Traci, and children, Meghan, Erin, and Alex, of Scarborough, and sister, Kelly G. Stuart and husband Jon of Boston, Mass.

A funeral Mass was held at St. Mary’s Church, Wells, on Saturday. Interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk, in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Kennebec Valley Humane Society, Connor Animal Shelter, 10 Pet Haven Ln., Augusta, ME 04330, in her memory.
