Elizabeth Hunt

KENNEBUNK — Elizabeth H. Hunt, died Feb. 27, 2006, at the Kennebunk Nursing & Rehabilitation Center after several months of declining health. She had recently been a resident of Huntington Common in Kennebunk, after having lived on Merrifield Drive in Kennebunk since 1989, having moved there from Connecticut to be near family.

She was born in Saxtons River, Vt., on Jan. 2, 1912, the youngest daughter of Lucian Moore Hunt and Mary (Halladay) Hunt. She attended school in Saxtons River and graduated from Bellows Falls, (Vt.) High School. She attended Middlebury College in Vermont, graduating in 1933, with a major in French. She received a master’s degree from Columbia University in New York City and spent a summer studying at The Sorbonne in Paris, France.

After college she taught French in Bakersfield, Montpelier, and Bellows Falls (Vt.) high schools, and in Southington and Farmington, Conn., where she ended her career as head of the guidance department.

She enjoyed collecting unicorns, gardening, reading (Jane Austen and John Buchan) and traveling, especially several trips she made with her niece, via small camper, to Scotland, including the Orkney Islands and the Inner and Outer Hebrides. They also took a camper trip to Norway going above the Arctic Circle and returning through Finland and Sweden. Her last trip abroad was in 1984, when she, her sister and niece enjoyed traveling through Yorkshire (James Herriot Country) and spending time in Scotland including a week on the Isle of Mull. Two years later the three of them visited Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown, where an ancestor was the first clergyman. She was a member of the Webhannet Women’s Club in Kennebunk until it disbanded.

She was predeceased by her parents and an older sister, Hazel L. Hunt.

She is survived by one sister, Amy H. Meek and one niece, Sheila H. Meek, both of Kennebunkport; one nephew, Rev. Dr. Peter H. Meek and his wife, Bonnie of Lexington. Mass.; and one grand-niece, Amy E. B. Meek of California.

There will be a memorial gathering for family and friends at the Bibber Memorial Chapel in Kennebunk at a date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

John Inglis

KENNEBUNKPORT — John Henry Inglis, 77, a resident of Touchstone Drive died, Feb. 26, 2006, in York after a brief illness.

He was born in Boston, Mass., on March 18, 1928, a son of John Henry and Louise (Kumin) Inglis and attended local schools. During World War II, he served his country in the United States Navy. After the war, he was discharged from the Navy. He graduated from Boston University School of Management. He is listed as a member of the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in 1951-1952. During college years, he was student government president, a member of the student faculty assembly executive committee, and a member of the student senate for four years where he was senate president in his junior year. He was also active in ROTC, Scabbard and Blade, All University Rally Executive Committee, Scarlet Key, Interfraternity Conference, Lock, Booster Club, Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity and Hub Board.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force Reserves after graduation.

He began his career as a territory sales manager for the Burroughs Corporation of Michigan. After 35 years of computer sales and being promoted to the position of Northeast Region Sales Manager for Burroughs, he took early retirement. Six months later, realizing “it was too early,” he went to work for Digital Equipment Corp. of Massachusetts, retiring “this time for good” in 1991.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Robert Inglis.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth (Stephenson) Inglis of Kennebunkport; one son, John Stephenson Inglis Sr. of Tampa, Fla.; three daughters, Jan Elizabeth Inglis of Dover, Del., Betsy Inglis Lawrence of New York, N.Y., and Bonnie Inglis Malone of Kingwood, Texas; one brother, Charles Inglis of Peabody, Mass.; and four grandchildren.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport,

Helen Weigel

WELLS — Helen E. (Grubb) Weigel, 85, of Flintlock Village, Wells, formerly of Leominster, Mass., died at the Kennebunk Nursing Home on March 2, 2006, lovingly surrounded by her family.

She was born in Fitchburg, Mass., on May 14, 1920, the daughter of C. Leroy and Elizabeth (Shields) Grubb. She was a resident of Leominster, Mass., before moving to Wells. She graduated from Fitchburg High and the Newton Wellesley School of Nursing. She also studied at Fitchburg State, Boston College, and Clark University. She was employed at Leominster Hospital where she was the operating supervisor for more than 20 years.

She was active in St. David’s Episcopal Church and on the board of the Wells Public Library. She was an avid reader and enjoyed her book club. She also enjoyed writing and took numerous creative writing courses.

Douglas Weigel, her husband of more than 50 years, predeceased her in 1993.

She leaves one daughter, Donna E. Weigel of Wells; one son, Steven D. Weigel and his wife Loretta W. of Moody; one grandson Jarret S. Weigel of Wells; one granddaughter, Stephanie E. Duell and her husband Lawrence of Moody; and one nephew, Carl L. Grubb and his wife Roma of Moody.

Graveside services will be held at Evergreen cemetery in Leominster, Mass. at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in her memory to the Wells Public Library, PO Box 699, Wells, ME 04090 or to the organization of your choice.

Blaine Gerrish

SANFORD — Blaine Lewis Gerrish, 49, of Garland, Maine, died March 2, 2006, in Goodall

Hospital in Sanford.

He was born in Sanford, on June 4, 1956.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lisa (Morse) Gerrish of Garland; four sons, Nathan, Aaron, Christopher, Corey, and daughter Jessica. He was an avid hunter. And loved to fish and hunt with his sons. He was a devoted husband and he and his wife spent many times snowmobiling, four wheeling and hunting together.

Services were held Sunday at Carll, Heald and Black Funeral Home, Sanford.

He was loved by many and deeply missed by everyone.

Alice Key

WELLS — Alice H. Key, 91, died the afternoon of March 5, 2006, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

She was born in Haverhill, Mass., on Feb. 15, 1915, a daughter of George and Albertine (Dionne) LaPointe. She was educated in Haverhill schools and graduated from McIntosh Business College.

She was employed as a statistician and credit manager for the former Enterprise Stores, Haverhill, Mass. She retired to Maine in 1979.

She was married to Frederick Key, who died in 1988.

She was a former chaplain of the Haverhill Grange, and a former Girl Scouts of America troop leader for five years. She was also a member of the former Dunaway Senior Citizens in Ogunquit.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Donald LaPointe Sr., and a sister, Irene Borden.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Clifford (Lois) Scott of Biddeford and Mrs. Larry (Beverly) Bowen of Wells; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A graveside service for Alice Key will be held Wednes-day, April 5, at 10:30 a.m. in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations for a permanent seaside memorial may be made to Mrs. Beverly Bowen, 476 Littlefield Road, Wells, ME 04090. Arrangements are under the direction of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells.

Gene Pope

ARUNDEL — Gene F. Pope, 53, a resident of Hilltop Drive, passed away the morning of Feb. 13, 2006, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born on Oct. 27, 1952, in Newburyport, Mass. He was educated in Massachusetts schools. On Dec. 31, 1975, he married his wife Mary Nichols. They moved to California in 1978, where they enjoyed living there for 11 years, moving back to Maine in 1989. He was proprietor of the Painting Pope for many years, working throughout southern Maine.

He was a sports fan who enjoyed football and baseball. He watched the Boston Red Sox win the World Series on his birthday on Oct. 27, 2004. He was an avid pool player who won many pool tournaments. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his grandson, Tyler.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Mary Nichols Pope of Arundel; one son, Jesse J. Pope of Kennebunkport; one daughter, Stacey M. Pope of Biddeford; two brothers, Clement Pope of Redding, Calif., and Steven Pope of Ossipee, N.H.; one grandson, Tyler; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are by Cote Funeral Home, Saco. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial donations to Mary Pope, 41 Hilltop Drive, Arundel, ME 04046.

Elizabeth Johnson

NORTH BERWICK —Elizabeth Jane (Hayes) Johnson, 94, passed away peacefully, Feb. 24, 2006, in Sanford after a brief illness.

She was born July 19, 1911, on Market Street, where she lived her entire life.

She graduated from North Berwick High School in 1930, then attended Nasson Institute in Springvale. In 1932, she married Harvey F. Johnson. Together they joined her parents, Hiram Edwin and Jennie Blanche (Staples) Hayes, in operating the Hayes Funeral Home; formerly the Staples Funeral Home. In 1953, Harvey and she assumed the reigns of the business; changing the name to Johnson Funeral Home. She had a gift for helping families during their time of grief. Her empathy, dignity and compassion will forever be revered. She was proud to see her family business be passed down to what is now the fifth and sixth generations. She remained a licensed funeral attendant and treasurer for the corporation until 2005, and also maintained the town’s cemetery records.

She had a passion for life itself, enjoying each and every day. In 1939, she and her husband built a cottage on Moody Beach, where the family summered until recent years. She belonged to the Bauneg Beg Grange, the North Berwick Historical Society, was a charter member and past president of the Madisses Club and charter member and past president of the Philomath Club, where she fulfilled her love of books.

She is remembered for the proper lady that she was and the dignity and pride she portrayed. Her family will miss her immensely but will carry on with the grace and etiquette she taught them.

She was pre-deceased by her grandson, Stephen L. Johnson in 1988, and her youngest son, David Hayes Johnson, in January of 2005.

She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Harvey Frank Johnson; son, Malcolm Hayes Johnson and his wife, Dyantha (Chadbourne) of Wells and their children, Crystal Danis and her husband, Michael, Scott and Brian Johnson, all of Wells; daughter-in-law, Sherry (Wyman) Johnson and her children, Michael Johnson Sr. and his wife, Anita, all of North Berwick, and Melissa Johnson Pierce and her husband, Jere, of Wells; nine great-grandchildren, Michael D. Johnson Jr. and his wife Kristin, Jessica (Johnson) Badger and her husband Bill, Matthew, Cain, Chelsey, Christina, Christopher and Stephen Johnson and Hayes Pierce. Her first great-great-grandson, Michael David Johnson III, is expected in April.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Bethel Christian Church, North Berwick,. Interment was in the Hillside cemetery in North Berwick.

Ray Chase

WELLS — Ray Victor Chase, 94, of Ocean Avenue died Feb. 26, 2006, surrounded by family.

He was born in Wells, on Oct. 10, 1911, a son of Harold and Ora (Wormwood) Chase. He attended local schools and applied his skills to carpentry. He served his country in the Army as a sergeant during World War II.

He was the oldest lifelong resident of Wells. He was the Grand Marshall at the 350th Wells parade, which he was proud of.

He enjoyed keeping busy, he was never one to sit around. He was always looking for a project to do. He would putter around his house and yard all day long. He actually earned a little local notoriety when at the age of 88 he fell off a ladder and broke his leg while painting the back of the workshop. He also enjoyed hunting, camping, and traveling.

His wife of 64 years, Marion (Guest) Chase, three sons, Reginald Chase and Ronald Chase of Wells and Barry Chase of North Berwick; two brothers Forrest Chase and Daniel Chase of Wells; one sister, Jane Clem of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren survive him. His brothers Merle Chase and Carl Chase and sisters Marion Oliver and Emily Chick predecease him.

There will be a memorial graveside service at Ocean View cemetery in the spring.

Everett Nuttall

OGUNQUIT — Everett J. Nuttall, 63, of Pomfret, Conn., and Ogunquit, died unexpectedly on Feb. 16, 2006, at UMass Medical Center in Worcester, Mass. He was born in Willimantic Conn., July 21, 1942, son of the late Morris E. and Evelyn (Fawley) Nuttall.

He was born and raised on the family dairy farm in Pomfret started by his father. After graduation from Putnam (Conn.) High School in 1960, he managed the family farm and changed the emphasis of the farm from dairy cows to raising more than 110,000 egg-laying chickens, renaming the new business Orchard Hill Farm. In 1980, he opened a very popular, local restaurant, The Orchard Hill Farm Dairy.

In 1990, he opened the Plaza Laundromat in Dayville, Conn. The Laundromat not only services the local populace, but also serves several unique customers, one of which is Paul Newman’s Hole In The Wall Gang Camp for youngsters with terminal illnesses.

He was a local personality, known for his hard work and community service. He was a motor enthusiast, owning countless automobiles and motorcycles during his lifetime. At age 10, wanting a car, he worked at local farms to earn enough money to buy his first automobile, and drove it over the cornfields and cow pastures. He was also a member of The Hot Sparks Hot Rod Club in his teenage years.

Not content to only drive cars, he also was a boat, snowmobile, and airplane enthusiast, with a pilot’s license and membership in the Westerly Yacht Club. “If it had wheels and a motor, he could make it run.” He loved the outdoors and was an avid sportsman, an experienced white water rafter and skeet shooter. In addition, he was a longtime member of the Central Connecticut Cooperative Farmers Association.

He will best be remembered for his love of life, his interest in the well being of his friends and neighbors, his memorable and infectious laugh, and his steadfast conviviality. He had a deep affection for the people of Ogunquit and considered the town his “true home.”

He is survived by his life partner of 15 years, Daniel Smart, also of Pomfret and Ogunquit and his three children.

Funeral services were held on Feb. 21 in Danielson, Conn.

Gwendolyn Shaw

BERWICK — Gwendolyn “Gwen” M. Shaw, 71, of Pine Hill Mobile Home Park, formerly of Nowell Street, North Berwick, passed away Feb. 25, 2006, in York Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born March 20, 1934, at the home of her parents Ralph and Esther (Hutchins) Boston, in Wells.

She enjoyed her time with her family and also liked to read. In 1996 she earned her GED from Noble Adult Education. She then decided to return to school and earned her high school diploma in 1999. She was very proud of her accomplishments and loved to tell everyone how she had graduated twice.

Her husband, Donald Shaw, passed away in September of 1990.

Surviving are one son, Christopher Shaw of Berwick; one daughter, Deborah Howard and her husband Richard of Wells; two brothers, Edward Boston of Wells and Richard Boston of Rome, N.Y.; two sisters, Joanne Jellison and Victoria Bouchard of Wells; three grandchildren, Miranda Townsend and Benjamin Howard of Wells, Erica Howard of East Setauket, N.Y.; and a great-granddaughter, Eva Somerset Peralta, also of New York; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial calling hours were held Wednesday at the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. Spring Interment in Hillside Cemetery, North Berwick.
