Nellie Hilton
SANFORD — Nellie D. Hilton, 73, of Sanford and Avon Park, Fla., died Tuesday (listed Friday, April 4, 2003) in Avon Park.

Mrs. Hilton was born on July 2, 1929 in Suncook, N.H., the daughter of Xavier and Marie Desrosiers Vezina, and attended Biddeford schools.

For many years, she worked in local dress shops and at the Sanford Healthcare Facility.

Mrs. Hilton led a very active life. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, and crafting, camping, and traveling across the entire country. She was an excellent baker, and a special friend of Alfred Mayott of Lebanon.

Mrs. Hilton was an active member of Union Congregational Church in Avon Park.

Her husband, Warren, died in 1994.

Survivors include a daughter, Roxanne (Mrs. David) Maleham of Milton Mills, N.H.; two sons, William of Alfred and Gary of Sanford; a brother, Donald Vezina of Acton; a sister, Pauline Gobiel of Biddeford; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Josephine Sampson
BUXTON — Josephine M. Sampson, 61, of Parker Farm Road, died Wednesday (listed Friday, June 20, 2003) at Mercy Hospital in Portland.

She was born in Portland on Oct. 31, 1941, a daughter of Theodore Roosevelt and Lenora M. (Shean) Sampson. In her earlier years, Josephine attended Pride Training School at Preble Chapel in Portland for several years.

She enjoyed soap operas, country music and loved little babies.

Josephine was predeceased by two brothers, Frank T. in 1953 and Thomas L. in 1960.

Surviving are her mother; her brother, Timothy R. Sr.; two sisters, Barbara A. Davis and Sheila E., all of Buxton; and three nephews, Frank T., Timothy R. Jr. and Thomas L.

Jeanne Foss
BIDDEFORD — Jeanne Martel Foss, 81, of Pool Street, formerly of Middle Street in Saco, died Thursday (listed Friday, August 8, 2003) at the Renaissance.

She was born in Biddeford on July 31, 1922, the daughter of Arthur and Lucia Viger Martel, and attended St. Joseph’s School.

Ms. Foss worked at S.P. Shipyard in the 1940s, Songo Shoe for eight years, and Herman Shoe for 13 years, retiring from W.H. Nichols in 1987 after 13 years.

She enjoyed reading, shopping, rug hooking, flower gardening, traveling and going out with friends.

She was a member of Notre Dame de Lourdes Church in Saco

Survivors include one daughter, Madeline Ann (Mrs. George E.) Geyer of Windham and several cousins.

MOORE
VINCENT A., 54, of Wentworth Street in Exeter, N. H., died Feb. 10, 2003 at his home.

He was born May 17, 1948 in Portland, the son of Elwyn and Katherine Ewald Moore. Formerly of Cumberland, he graduated from Greely High School in 1966 and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business at the University of Southern Maine. He also formerly resided in Provincetown, Mass. and had moved to Exeter in October 2002.

Mr. Moore served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was a member of the Veterans for Peace. He sang in the men’s choral group in Provincetown and Portsmouth, N. H., and enjoyed gourmet cooking and gardening. He was employed for many years as a manager at Olympia Sports, most recently in Seabrook, N.H.

Survivors include his daughter, Sheilalee of Biddeford; his brother, Theodore of Auburn; and his partner of 11 years, Paul Colcord of Exeter.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 11 a.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church, 403 Main St., Saco. Spring burial will be held in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Vietnam Veterans of America, attn.: Joe Sternberg C.F.O., 8605 Cameron St., Silver Springs MD 20910. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter is handling the arrangements.

Kenneth Laughlin
LIMERICK — Kenneth L. Laughlin, 49, of Central Avenue, died Wednesday (listed Friday, April 4, 2003) at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Portland on July 15, 1953, a son of Herbert and Helen Gammon Laughlin, attended local schools and graduated from Massabesic High School in Waterboro.

For 20 years, he worked as a jeweler for Jessup's Jewelry Stores in California, Minnesota, and Massachusetts. He then moved back to Maine and opened The Olde Country Store on Rte. 11 in Limerick, which was the site of his family home and where he grew up.

Mr. Laughlin was very active in the town of Limerick and served on the board of selectman for nine years. He loved and was very knowledgeable about art and sculpture.

He was a practicing Christian Scientist and was very devout in his religious faith.

Surviving are his fiancée, Pamela Lang of Limerick; a brother, Dwight of Tennessee; and several nieces and cousins.

Charles Day
OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Charles Edward Day Jr., 48, of Smith Avenue, died Wednesday (listed Friday, October 3, 2003) at his residence.

He was born in Lynwood, Calif. on Nov. 27, 1955, a son of Charles Sr. and Helen (Walker) Day. He attended Old Orchard Beach schools and graduated in 1973 from Old Orchard Beach High School. He attended the University of Maine at Presque Isle and studied Wildlife Management.

In his younger years, Mr. Day worked at his family’s business at Surfside Cabins in Old Orchard Beach. Later, he worked as a conductor at Rigby Yard for Springfield Terminal Railway for 28 years.

He was a member of the York County Fish and Game Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, being in the outdoors, reading, and spending time with his family. In April, he celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary in Oahu, Hawaii.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene (Angelosante) Day; one daughter, Shauna and one son, Chaz, both of Old Orchard Beach; one brother, Kenneth of Standish; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Marie Normand
KENNEBUNK — Marie J. Normand, 90, formerly of Sanford and Kennebunk, died Thursday (listed Friday, April 4, 2003) at the Washington House in Alexandria, Va. after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Normand was born in St. Rose du Digelis, Quebec, Canada on March 20, 1913, a daughter of Francis Xavier and Pauline Lavoie Michaud. She attended schools in Quebec and came to the United States as a young girl.

She and her husband, Louis L. Normand, lived in Sanford prior to moving to the Kennebunks. He died in 1987.

Mrs. Normand was employed for several years with the former Kesslen Shoe Company and in later years with Morning Star Corporation, both in Kennebunk.

She was a communicant of St. Martha’s in Kennebunk, and moved to Alexandria several years ago to be near her family.

A sister, Rose Potvin, died previously.

Survivors include two sons, Louis L. Jr. of Florham Park, N.J. and Paul E. of Alexandria; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Bella Deschenes
BIDDEFORD — Bella Vir Deschenes, 84, of Emery Street, formerly of Hartford, Conn., died Wednesday (listed Friday, October 3, 2003) at St. Andre’s Health Care Facility.

She was born on Oct. 31, 1918 in Biddeford, a daughter of George and Marie Fortier Vir, and was educated at St. Andre’s School.

Mrs. Deschenes was employed by Pepperell Manufacturing in Biddeford, and also worked at York Mills in Saco. Later, she was employed by Pratt and Whitney in Hartford for four years.

She was a communicant of St. Andre’s Church.

Her husband of 43 years, Paul Deschenes, died Nov. 26, 1988.

Survivors include one son, Donald Pinard of Biddeford; one daughter, Paulette (Mrs. James) Mangino of Woodridge, Ill.; one sister, Noella McMuellen of Sunrise, Fla.; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

India Tavares
SANFORD — India Marie McMahon Tavares, 27, of Charles Street, died unexpectedly Tuesday (listed Friday, June 27, 2003).

She was born June 27, 1975 in Meriden, Conn., a daughter of Dennis R. and Gloria (Currier) McMahon. She graduated from Noble High School in 1993, then furthered her education at McIntosh College in Dover, N.H.

India was a friendly and outgoing girl. She loved the ocean and fishing with her father and brothers, and she adored her three children.

Survivors include three sons, Joseph K. and Whitney K., both of Sanford and McCary McCatty of North Berwick; her parents of North Berwick; two brothers, Dennis R. Jr. McMahon and Whitney P. McMahon, both of North Berwick; great-grandmother, Opal Chambers of North Berwick, maternal grandmother, Jeanette O’Clair of Sanford and paternal grandmother, Carolyn McMahon of Wallingford, Conn.

Warren Ham
SHAPLEIGH — Warren Lewis Ham, 76, died unexpectedly Tuesday (listed Friday, October 3, 2003) at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.

He was born Nov. 4, 1926 in Nashua, N.H., the son of Edward E. and Alice M. (DeWare) Ham, and was a graduate of Pepperell (Mass.) High School.

Warren served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the occupation troops in Germany.

He married Ruth Straitiff in 1950, and was employed as a clerical worker for the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C. He also worked in logistics and supply for the National Security Agency in Ft. Meade, Md. from 1953 to 1966. He lived in Alexandria, Va. from 1950 to 1958 and in Glen Burnie, Md. from 1958 until moving to Shapleigh in 1973. Since relocating here, Warren worked in several jobs including Standard Electric in Portland, and the former Aerofab and Computervision plants in Sanford.

As a “homebody,” he enjoyed his farm and garden, tended his geese and chickens and cut firewood for his home. He was a “grandfather and father” to many in Shapleigh.

Mr. Ham was a member of Shapleigh First Baptist Church.

His son, Edward, died in 1980.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years; a son, Kevin S. of Limerick; three daughters, Jean A. Lynch of Glen Burnie, Karen L. of South Portland, and Patricia A. Mayo of Kennebunk; a brother, Everett C. of Sykesville, Md.; a grandson, Ryan Mayo; three nieces and two nephews.

Linden Rand
LEBANON — Linden E. “Bud” Rand, 67, died Wednesday (listed Friday, June 13, 2002) at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.

He was born in Farmington on Oct. 10, 1935, a son of Earl and Phyllis (Clapp) Rand, attended schools in Harrison and Bridgton and was a graduate of Bridgton Academy.

He was an Army veteran, serving just after the Korean Conflict.

A former North Berwick resident, he lived in Lebanon for more than 20 years. He worked for the Rowell and Watson Oil Co. of Dover, N.H. as a mechanic, retiring in 1998.

He had an affinity for engines and an interest in antique internal combustion engines. He was a member of the New Hampshire Power of the Past Collectors and the Maine Antique Power Association. He had many antique engines at home. His favorite, called “Big Bertha,” had been featured in the 4th of July parade in Sanford for many years. He was a member of the AMVETS post in Sanford and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Katheryn P. (Tripp) Rand; four sons, Scott of North Berwick, Craig of Richfield Park, N.J., Todd of Abbot and Mark of Acton; a daughter, Debra L’Heureux of Sanford; a brother, Marshall of Harrison; a sister, Viola Hazelton of Florida; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
