Scott Sargent

KENNEBUNK — Scott Sargent, 73, of Waterford Greene Drive, Kennebunk, and Drakes Island, Wells, formerly of Westborough, Mass., died Jan, 13, 2006, at his home. He will be missed by family and many circles of friends.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of Howard Crosby and Isabelle Dana (Scott) Sargent. His public years were spent at Chevy Chase, Md. schools. He attended St. Albans School in Washington, D.C., graduated from Portsmouth, N.H. High School, a 1955 graduate of Bowdion College where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He later graduated from the School of Industrial Management at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He served two years in the Untied States Army as 1st Lt. and retired from the reserves as a captain.

He worked for Morgan Construction Company in Worcester, Mass., for 32 years, retiring as vice president of finance and director in 1989.

He was the gentlest of men and enjoyed life to the fullest with his wife, family and friends, and will be especially remembered for his uncanny memory retention of dates and sports and music trivia.

He served the United Way and Bowdoin Club, both of Worcester and was an Alumni Representative at the college. He quietly served his hometown of Westborough as treasurer of many organizations for many years, notably Kirkside Foundation for 25 years and Habitat of Humanity, as co-chair of the Family Selection Committee.

For all of his retirement years, he worked for Alexander Aronson and Finning of Mass. He served on the Waterford Greene Condominium Board of Directors and was a member of the friends of the Chamber of Commerce, Newcomers Club and St. David Episcopal Church, all of Kennebunk.

He was pre-deceased by a son, Paul Howard, in 1985.

He is survived by his beloved wife Helen Lee Johnson Sargent of Kennebunk; one daughter, Susan Sargent Prestes of Worcester; two sons, David Scott Sargent of South Portland, and Peter Hall Sargent of Sudbury, Mass.; one sister, Janet Sargent Francis Russell of Andover, Mass.; nine grandchildren, Brian, Mark and Lisa Prestes, Ashley and Taylor Sargent, Lindsey and Brian Hyson and Graham and Liv Sargent; one great-grandson, Benjamin Edward Prestes; two nieces, Sarah Lafond and Kristen McElhiney; and four nephews, Thomas and Stephen Francis and Scott and John McElhiney.

Memorial services were held Wednesday at the St. David’s Episcopal Church, Kennebunk. A committal service will take place at Woodlawn cemetery in Wellesley, Mass. in April.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Memorial Fund at St. David’s Church, York Street, Kennebunk, ME 04043, in his memory.

Frances Siegel

OGUNQUIT — Frances Siegel, 96, of Cambridge, Mass., and Ogunquit, died quietly on Jan. 12, 2006, at Mt. Auburn Hospital after a brief illness.

Loving sister of the late Fannie Jacobs and Mary Russak.

She was a graduate of Radcliff College and she worked for many years in Widner Library at Harvard University.

She is survived by one niece, Barbara Messore and her husband Anthony, of Belmont; and many friends.

SIEGEL — A memorial service for Frances Siegel, will be held at Story Chapel (Mt. Auburn Cemetery), 580 Mt. Auburn St., Cambridge, Mass., at 10 a.m. Saturday. Relatives and friends invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to a charity of your choice. Brown and Sons Funeral Home, (617) 484-2534.

Ruth Bither

FALMOUTH — Ruth (Larson) Bither of Falmouth, died on March 16, 2006. She was born in Portland on Oct. 19, 1919, daughter of Ellen (Ek) Larson and Anton L. Larson.

She was educated in Cumberland and graduated from Greely Institute in 1937. After graduating from Westbrook Junior College in 1937, she worked in the law office of Berman, Berman and Wernick and also for the United States Department of Labor. In later years she was a real estate broker with the Beecher Agency.

On Feb. 22, 1943, she married Donald M. Bither of Houlton. They were married for 58 years until his death in 2001. For more than 35 years they lived on Prospect Street in Portland, where they raised their three sons. In 1978 they moved to “The Farm,” an antique farmhouse in Raymond which they had purchased and restored in the early 1960s. They lived in Raymond for more than 25 years while spending the winter months in Jekyll Island, Ga.

She was always interested in dramatics and was an active member of the Dramatic Club in college. For many years she was active with the Portland Players serving on many committees and performing leading roles in many plays.

She was a 60-year member of the Woodfords Congregational Church where she was a trustee. She served on many committees, was a Sunday school teacher, a choir member and a deaconess. For many years she was on the board of directors of the YWCA, serving two years as president. She was a former board member of the Sweetser Home, a member and past president of the Women’s Woodfords Club, a past matron of the Order of Eastern Star, a president of Pathfinders PTA at Deering High School, and a den mother. She was a member of The College Club, The Women’s Literary Union, The Historical Societies of Cumberland, Falmouth and Raymond and a friend of the Foreside Community Church. In 1978, she ran as an at-large candidate for the Maine state legislature from the City of Portland and was the top Republican vote getter. While living on Jekyll Island, she attended the Presbyterian Church, belonged to the Jekyll Island Country Club, the Jekyll Island Singers and the Garden Club. She enjoyed playing golf and bridge.

She is survived by three sons, Douglas N. Bither and Stephen D. Bither of Portland, and James M. Bither and his wife, Janet Dowd Bither of Kennebunk; five grandchildren, Amy Bither Johnson and husband David of Kennebunkport, Noelle Bither Heckscher and husband Jon of Smiths Parish, Bermuda, Carrie Bither Palmer and husband Jeff of Pittsburg, Pa., Molly Bither of Portland and Sam Bither of Los Angeles, Calif.; six great-grandchildren, Eliza and Charlotte Johnson, James and Owen Heckscher, Maxwell Palmer, Elijah McGee; one sister, Christine Blanchard of Yarmouth; one sister-in-law, Betty Larson of Bucksport; two nieces; four nephews; and many friends especially three high-school friends, Ruth Norton, Barbara Garsoe and Elizabeth Baxter.

Besides her parents, she was pre-deceased by her husband, Donald Bither, her brother, Ernest Larson, and a grandson, Nicholas Bither.

A memorial service was held at Foreside Community Church, Falmouth, on Wednesday, followed by a reception for family and friends at the church hall.

Arrangements are by Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, Portland.

William Fick

KENNEBUNK — William F. Fick, 91, resident of Ross Road, Kennebunk, passed into the arms of God at his home March 17, 2006, following a brief illness.

He was born in Boston, Mass., son of Otto P.A. and Bertha (Koch) Fick.

He attended Boston English High School and graduated from Massachusetts Maritime Academy. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, retiring as captain. Following the war, he became employed with the New England Telephone & Telegraph Company and served in management capacity for several years. He was a member of the Kennebunk Police Department for more than 14 years. He was a member of Arundel Lodge of Masons in Kennebunkport. He was an officer and a gentleman and loved by all.

He was predeceased by his wife Mabel (Jones) Fick, who died in 1999.

He is survived by one son, William O. of Wells; and one daughter, Susan K. Fick of Kennebunk.

At his request, no services will be held. Interment in Arundel cemetery Kennebunkport.

Lois Carlson

KENNEBUNK — Lois (Towner) Carlson passed away at the Kennebunk Nursing Home, March 16, 2006.

She was born in Asbury Park, N.J. in 1911.

She and her husband Roy moved to The Acorn on Woodland Avenue in Kennebunk Beach in 1970.

A deep well of creativity throughout her life, Madame Lolo, as she was known, designed greeting cards, watercolors, and a line of hats called “Lois Lids.” She was known in particular for her prize-winning needlepoint, winning first prize in many national shows. She taught needling in both Maine and Florida and was active in the Embroidery Guild of Maine. Recently an exhibit of her work was on display in the Kennebunk Library. Roy died in 1980 and she designed and maintained the Memorial Garden next to Trinity Chapel in his honor until the mid ‘90s when she turned it over to the Memorial Garden Committee. Today the garden is one of the little jewels of Kennebunk Beach, a peaceful refuge as well as a way to honor our loved ones who have passed.

She is survived by two children, Anne Carlson of Kennebunk and Chip Carlson of Cheyenne, Wyo.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be private.

George Burdick II

KENNEBUNK — George E. Burdick II, 84 of Ridgewood Circle, died March 16, 2006, at Maine Medical Center, Portland.

He was born in Camp Grant, Rockford, Ill., on March 30, 1921, the son of George Enos and Mary (Ethyl Saunders) Burdick. From 1935-1939, he attended the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla. In 1940, he graduated from the Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J. He attended both MIT and Boston University. At MIT he was president of the MIT Rocket Research Society; he graduated from BU in 1948, with a B.S. degree.

He served his country faithfully in the U.S. Army as a technical sergeant during World War II in the Pacific theater.

From 1949 until 2003, he was employed at Baldwin Lima Hamilton and the Hudson Combing Company, taught Electrical Engineering at Northeastern University, and was self-employed as a professional engineer. In 1969, he founded Hudson Institute, a four-year liberal arts college in Hudson, Mass.

He was a longtime member and former curator and trustee of the Seashore Trolley Museum, and belonged to numerous other rail and steamship organizations. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Hudson, Mass., and St. David’s in Kennebunk.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lindsey; one son, George; two daughters, Carrie and Margaret; one grandson, Timothy; and three step-grandchildren, Jessica, Jasmine, and Joshua.

A memorial service was held Wednesday at St. David’s Church, Kennebunk. Interment was at the Alfred Rural cemetery in Alfred, N.Y.

If desired, donations can be made to the Seashore Trolley Museum, PO Box A, Kennebunkport, ME 04046, in lieu of flowers.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Patrick Grandinetta

KENNEBUNK – Patrick J. Grandinetta, 57, of Cat Mousam Road, died March 14, 2006, at RiverRidge Center for Rehabilitation.

He was born in Utica, N.Y., on March 23, 1948, the son of Pasquale R. and Julia Ann (Coppola) Grandinetta.

He attended St. Mary of Mount Carmel School and graduated from Utica Free Academy. He also attended Mohawk Valley Community College.

He served his country faithfully in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

He was an avid Yankees and Jets fan and also loved to cook.

Despite his disability, he was able to conduct some research on Brain And Spinal Injuries.

“The family would like to thank the staff of RiverRidge Rehabilitation Center and Beacon Hospice for the excellent care Patrick received.”

He is predeceased by a sister, Mary Judith Boyd of Florida, who died in 2002.

Surviving are two sons, Richard Grandinetta of Dumfries, Va., and Michael Grandinetta and his wife, Mary Ann of Manassas, Va.; one sister, Fiora Wilson of Frankfort, N.Y.; his first wife, Cathy Grandinetta of New Hartford, N.Y., with whom he maintained a great friendship; nieces and nephews; and one brother-in-law, Bill Boyd.

A Mass of Christian burial was held March 16, at St. Martha Church, Kennebunk. Burial was at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial cemetery in Augusta.

If desired, donations can be made in his memory to the River Ridge Center for Rehabilitation, 79 Cat Mousam Rd., Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Peter Brannen

KENNEBUNK — Peter Benjamin Brannen, 46, of Pinewood Drive, Kennebunk, died suddenly on March 17, 2006, at his home.

He was born in Portland, on Oct. 10, 1959, a son of Benjamin H. Brannen and Patricia Gunn Brannen Lyna. He was a graduate of Kennebunk High School.

He enjoyed family trips to Ireland, sports, fishing, spending time with family. He always had a ready smile and a heart to go with it. He was the original “bearer of the pumpkin” in the Dock Square area of Kennebunkport. When he retired, he handed the job over to Patience Brennan, who carries on the tradition to this day.

He was employed at Riverview Restaurant, which his mother owned for 30 years.

He was a member of the Irish American Club.

He was predeceased by his father, Benjamin Brannen and his step-father, Robert M. Lyna.

Surviving him are his beloved wife, Joyce Brannen; two step-sons, Jon and Nathan Cluff, both of Kennebunk; his mother, Patricia (Gunn) Brannen Lyna of Kennebunkport; his brother, Michael Brannen of Kennebunk; two nephews, Sean Brannen and Evan Ward.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday at St. Martha Church with the Rev. Father Laurent LaPlante and Deacon Roger Normand.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Maine Irish Heritage Center, P.O. Box 7588, Portland, ME 04112.

Ruth Dickie

YORK — Ruth (Martin) Dickie, 85, passed away Feb. 27, 2006, in a Maryland hospital after a brief illness. She had been living with her daughter in Maryland since October.

She is predeceased by her husband of 28 years, Joseph Dickie, two brothers and two sisters.

She was born in Ashland, N.Y., to Alice (Clark) Martin and Kenneth Martin on Aug. 27, 1920, moved to Schenectady, N.Y. at age 2 and graduated from Draper High School in 1936. She then attended business school and worked for General Electric for many years. Few know that she sang on WGY in Schenectady and that she drove Army trucks during the war.

She was a member of the York Golf and Tennis Club since 1978, and a respected member of Southern Maine Womens Golf Association for 25 years.

She is survived by her three daughters, Judith Rice of R.I., Sally Lombardo of N.J., and Marilou Yost of Md.; and blessed with eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Details will be announced at a later date for a memorial service to be held late spring in Maine. Then she can rest peacefully in the state that has held her heart and soul for so many years.

Irma Stuart

GORHAM — Irma A. Stuart died peacefully on Feb. 28, 2006, surrounded by her loving family at the Gorham House.

She was the loving wife of William H. Stuart for 57 years who predeceased her in 1998.

She was born in Nov. 17, 1916, to Waldo F. and Marion E. (Bowen) Pitts in Kennebunk. She graduated from Kennebunk High School in 1936, and from Main General School of Nursing in 1939, was a registered nurse at Webber Hospital and also Maine Medical Center, a member of Bar Mills Community Church and enjoyed singing God’s praises in the choirs at Kennebunk Baptist Church, Central Square Baptist Church in Portland, and School Street United Methodist Church, Gorham.

She enjoyed knitting and crocheting for family, friends and many mission projects in several churches and the community.

She and her husband enjoyed traveling from 1972 to 1984. They put on many miles each October through May making many friends over the years. She loved everyone and was a very dear gracious lady bringing lots of love wherever she went. She will be lovingly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by one son, Lawrence W. Stuart and his wife, Jeri, of Gorham; one daughter, Carolyn J. (Stuart) Bradley and her husband, Reginald, of Mechanicsville, Va. She was blessed to be a grandmother to four grandchildren, Karen (Stuart) Moran and her husband, Edward, of Tewksbury, Mass., Stephen Bradley of Mechanicsville, Va., Stacia (Bradley) Eastman and her husband, Roland, of Salisbury, N.H., Michael L. Stuart of Gorham; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Jeremiah Eastman; one sister, Mrs. Woodbury (Bea) Stevens and her husband, Woody, of Kennebunkport; one sister-in-law, Esther (Stuart) Clark and her husband, John of Manchester, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.

Her family is very grateful to all of the staff at the Gorham House and to Beacon Hospice staff of South Portland for being so dedicated. Every person from reception to dietary are all angels. Many thanks to each of you for your compassionate care and for all of the love and hugs. You will always be remembered and appreciated. The family’s hearts are filled with thanksgiving for each of you.

The family of Irma A. Stuart invites the public to join them for a celebration of her life on Saturday, April 22, at 11 a.m. at Bar Mills Community Church, 1 Hermit Thrush Dr., Buxton, located in the New Buxton Town Center with the Rev. Dan Carr officiating. A fellowship luncheon will be served. Burial will be at Hope cemetery in Kennebunk. In lieu of flowers, her family would appreciate memorial contributions be made to Beacon Hospice, 54 B Atlantic Pl., South Portland, ME 04106, Bar Mills Community Church, P.O. Box 307, Bar Mills, ME 04004. Arrangements are under the guidance of Independent Death Care, 471 Deering Ave., Portland.
