She moved to Maine with her young family in 1963, residing initially in the Windham and Westbrook area. She was a well-liked waitress at Valle’s Restaurant on Brighton Avenue for several years before starting an insurance career with John Hancock Life Insurance. She was very proud that her new position allowed her to purchase a home for herself and her children on Main Street in Westbrook. She met her husband Warren Charles through the insurance agency and moved the family to Kennebunk, making her home in that area for the next 35 years. She was instrumental in helping her husband establish W.L. Charles Associates in 1970. In addition, she was tireless in participating in various volunteer experiences particularly at Southern Maine Medical Center where she was recognized for providing more than 1,500 volunteer hours, as well as serving a term as volunteer President. Hospice, Meals on Wheels, Literacy Volunteers, Habitat for Humanity and FISH were just some of the other volunteer organizations that she supported over the years with her time and energy. Above all, she was a very spiritual person, believing very passionately in her Saviour Jesus Christ and the power of prayer. She was very generous and kind in spirit and was always willing to help someone in need.

Besides traveling for the MAPHCC and playing golf, she especially enjoyed family events with her children and grandchildren.

She is pre-deceased by her parents Lavema and Nicolas, a brother Nicolas Jr, and in 1985, by her husband, Warren Charles.

She is survived by one daughter, Diane Roberts Howe and husband Frederic of Falmouth; son, Thomas Roberts, wife Nancy and grandson Kyle, of Kennebunk, son, Todd Charles of Biddeford, Maine and his children Samantha and Nicholas of Wells, Lawrence Charles, wife Vicki and their children Cecilia and Gabriel of Loveland, Ohio; one daughter, Major Elizabeth Charles Eidal and her husband Curt of Alexandria, Va.; one stepson, Warren “Butch” Charles Jr. of Cape Porpoise; one brother, William Cassa of Marietta, Ga.; one sister, Ruthann Buchanan of Defuniack Springs, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins around the country.

Charles Allen

KENNEBUNK — On Jan. 31, 2006, Charles DeBertram Allen, 71, of Kennebunk, died at home in the care of his family after a brief struggle with kidney cancer.

His family roots extend back to the 17th century. His grandmother Ida (Leavitt) Allen is a descendant of Deacon John Leavitt, who came from England to Hingham, Mass. in the late 1620s. The Allen ancestors settled in the Massabesic region of southern Maine and moved inland from Wells to harvest timber and do hardscrabble farming on Yeaton Hill in Alfred in the 18th century. His great uncle Amos was elected Representative to the House of the U.S. Congress at the time of the Spanish-American War. His grandfather, Atty. Fred John Allen, was superintendent of Sanford public schools from 1898-1899, and served as president of the Maine Senate from 1908-1909. In 1916, Fred John gave the property on which Sanford High School sat from 1918-1970 to the inhabitants of the town of Sanford; and in addition, helped to found the First Parish Unitarian Church in Sanford.

His was the son of Laurence Came and Ruth (DeBertram) Allen of Sanford. His parents owned and operated Allen’s Motel, Chateau and Inn. He graduated from Sanford High School as valedictorian and vice president of his class in 1953. He went on to Harvard College in Cambridge, Mass., where he earned a bachelor of arts degree, cum laude, in 1957. In 1961, he received the medical doctor degree from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City.

He completed a surgical internship at St. Luke’s Medical Center in New York City, a junior residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., and a residency in general surgery at the United States Public Health Service Hospital in Seattle, Wash., where he also served as chief resident in surgery.

He was commissioned an officer in the Seattle service hospital and began active duty in 1963, with the Indian Health Service as a general medical officer in Rosebud, S.D. Subsequent stations with the service included San Carlos, Ariz.,, Seattle, Wash., Anchorage, Alaska, and Oklahoma City. He retired as a medical director with the rank of captain from his last station at Claremore, Okla., in 1988.

During his 24 years of active duty, his professional interest in the quality of care available through the Indian Health Service led him to administrative duties (in addition to his full time duties as a surgeon) that included clinical director, active chief medical officer (Oklahoma), and membership on a national service committee for emergency medical services. His many contributions to quality of medical care in Indian Health were recognized by the Sicangu band of the Teton Lakota, the Cherokee and the Creek Nations, and by United States Public Health Service ribbon awards for isolated and hazardous duty and medals for outstanding service, meritorious service and distinguished service.

He was an ardent supporter of Indian health issues wherever and however they arose. He served formally as a medical consultant to the health services of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and the Cherokee Nation. In this capacity, he appeared before the Indian Affairs Subcommittee of the Department of the Interior. An appearance on the “Today Show” (1973) was followed by participation in a news documentary (CBS – “60 Minutes.”) In 1973, he conducted a clinic within the community of Wounded Knee during its occupation by the American Indian Movement at their request and with the approval of the Indian Health Service and the Department of Justice. These activities played a part in his receiving a field promotion but also were controversial and made him politically suspect to some as a “radical.”

During his medical career, he also taught anatomy and physiology, general surgery, and family practice at the University of Washington (Seattle), Sinte Gleska College (Rosebud), University of South Dakota (Sioux Falls), and University of Oklahoma (Tulsa and Oklahoma City.)

In 1988, he entered private surgical practice in Tulsa, Okla. However, he remained interested in his “home town” of Sanford, and when the opportunity arose in 1991, he returned to York County and established a practice in general surgery at the H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford while living in Kennebunk.

After his retirement from medical practice in 1999, he continued to teach anatomy and physiology, this time at the York County Community College, while he took art courses at the Heartwood school of art in Kennebunk. He painted a number of still life and portrait oils for friends and family. Also, one of his greatest pleasures was to act as a docent at the Laudholm National Estuarine Research Reserve in Wells, leading educational field trips for regional grade students studying ecology.

His family, friends of his youth, as well as colleagues from the medical community and the Indian Health Service visited and supported him during his final months.

He is survived by his spouse and partner of 35 years, Jorie (Farquharson) Allen and their daughter Stefanie of Kennebunk, their son Brock Laurence, his wife Jessica and daughter Mira Grace of Medfield, Mass., his daughters by prior marriage to Carol Duval: Leigh Woznick, husband Richard and daughters Kate and Emily of Bridgewater, N.J., Pamela and daughters Bridget, Brenna and son Michael of Morrisville, Pa., and Rebecca Brenner and husband Robert of Seminole, Fla.; his sister, Marion Allen Kaufmann and her husband Axel of Newton, Mass., and their daughters Laura McGlashan and Jessica Miquel and their spouses and children, and a brother, Frank L. Allen and his wife Nadine of San Mateo, Calif.

A celebration of life service was held on Saturday at the Sanford Unitarian-Universalist Church. Interment of his ashes will take place in the spring on the Allen-Leavitt family plot in Evergreen Cemetery, Alfred.

Arrangements are through the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, Springvale.

Donations rather than flowers are suggested to either of the following: Allen Family Preservation and Building Fund, Sanford Unitarian Universalist Church, PO Box 32, Sanford, ME 04073, or the Laudholm Trust Foundation, PO Box 1007, Wells, ME 04090. Ann Franco

KENNEBUNK — Ann (Redington) Franco died, Feb. 5, 2006, at Seal Rock Healthcare in Saco after a brief illness.

She was born Aug. 26, 1923, in San Mateo, Calif., the daughter of Col. Laurence Redington and Josephine (Parrott) Redington.

She received a BA in English from Lone Mountain College, now the University of San Francisco. Upon graduation, she moved to New York City where she worked briefly before marrying John E. Franco, MD.

They later settled in West Hartford, Conn., where she raised her family, was active in PTA, and worked at honing her writing skills. Many of her poems were published in the Hartford Times, Hartford Courant, and Kennebunk Star (now the York County Coast Star) among other newspapers. Her work was also published in Pen magazine and in the Wall Street Journal’s “Pepper & Salt” feature. A short story, “Think Irish,” was published in The Record magazine.

She moved to Kennebunk in 1976, after spending summers there with her family since 1957. It was during her Maine summers that she published her book of poetry, “Pebbles on the Shore.”

In the 1980s and early 1990s, she wrote a column, GrandParenting, for MaineSay, a Guy Gannett Publication. George H.W. Bush was among the prominent people she sometimes interviewed for her column. She also served for many years as editor of The Newsletter, a publication of the Senior Center at Lower Village in Kennebunk.

She leaves her children, John of Kennebunkport, Larry and his wife Janine of Kennebunkport, and Manchester, N.H., Robert and his fiancée Ann Braken, MD, of Hanover, N.H., and Katherine Kenney and her husband Patrick of Suffield, Conn.; three cherished grandchildren, Addison Marsh Jr. of Boston; Nathaniel Marsh of Suffield and Jenni Franco of Portsmouth, N.H.; two step-grandchildren, Bevin Kenney of Cambridge, Mass., and Molly Kenney of New York City; one niece and nephew, Ruth Redington of Cambridge, Mass., and David Redington of New York; beloved cousins, Donald Murchie and his wife Angela of Santa Monica, Calif., and William Parrott of Seattle.

A brother, John, and sister, Julia, died earlier.

Her generous spirit was shared with a lifetime of cherished friends. She was more than curious – she was genuinely interested in every aspect of the lives of her family and friends. She enthusiastically shared our joys and when we hit a rough patch, she offered solace, refuge, and perhaps an instant light-hearted verse to help us through. As many young people as those closer to her age were drawn to her little home near the beach to enjoy her company. Her quick wit enlivened every occasion. We will sorely miss all that she added to our lives.

Services will be private with Bibber Memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements. Per her wishes, contributions can be made to St. Jude in her memory. These may be sent to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
