Mary Tierney

WELLS — Mary R. Tierney, 72, a resident of Wells, formerly of Stoughton and Canton, Mass., died Jan. 31, 2006, at her home.

She was born and raised in Brighton, Mass., a daughter of Francis J. and Elizabeth (Rooney) Connerney and was a long-term resident of Stoughton, Mass. Prior to suffering a debilitating stroke in 1978, she led a very good life.

She had many good friends, both in her workplace as well as her neighborhood. She enjoyed ceramics, rug hooking, pillow making and crocheting for many years.

In recent years after moving to Wells, in 1991, she enjoyed her good friends at Sunnyside Apartments, Wells, where you could find her sitting outside with friends in warm weather. She was always one to break into song and make people smile.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Francis M. Tierney, three brothers Robert, Francis and Joseph Connerney.

She is survived by two daughters, Donna M. Tierney of Wells, and Sheila Grandmaison of Farmington, N.H.; one sister, Alice Drew of Newton, Mass.; two brothers, Edward P. Connerney of Stoughton, Mass. and William R. Connerney of Needham, Mass.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral Mass was held Friday at St. Mary’s Church, Wells. Interment was in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to: American Diabetes Association, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101; or American Heart Association, 343 Gorham Rd., South Portland, ME 04106.

John Spear

WELLS -- John (Jack) Tolman Spear, 92, former resident of Wells and Manchester, N.H., passed away peacefully Sept. 26, 2006, at the Huntington Common, Kennebunk, where he had resided for the past five years.

He was born in Winnetka, Ill., but spent most of his life in Manchester. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and UNH where Donald Bergquist, a fellow ATO introduced him to his future wife, Mildred, with whom he spent 53 wonderful years. She died in 1993.

He worked for Quaker Oats and Swift and Co. but his main career was an insurance salesman for Connecticut General.

He taught Sunday school for many years at Franklin Street Church (now Brookside Congregational Church) in Manchester.

Since his wife was Swedish, he joined the Scandia Club (a Swedish Men's Group). His love for travel can be traced back to his cross-country trip with some of his buddies after graduating from college. Stamp collecting, stock trading, cribbage, reading and trains were just some of his varied interests.

He is survived by his two beloved daughters; Linda Elwell and her husband Fred of Sanford, Fla., and Carol Boston and her husband David of Kennebunk; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Service notice: A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Manchester, N.H. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either Water for People, 6666 West Quincy Ave., Denver, CO 80235, or to the Beacon Hospice, 600 Round Wood Drive, Scarborough, ME 04074 in Mr. Spear's memory.

Marion W. Pickett

SANFORD -- Marion W. Pickett, 96, passed away on Sept. 27, 2006, at her home in Sanford.

She was born in Sanford on July 4, 1910, the daughter of Edmund and Alice (Perkins) Weeks. She graduated from Sanford High School in 1926 when she was 16-years-old.

She met her husband, Maurice Goodwin Pickett at the Bauneg Beg Grange and they were married on August 26, 1931.

She retired from Cyro Industries in 1977 where she had been employed as an executive secretary. She was proud of the fact that she lived in the oldest house in Sanford on the Weeks farmland restoring some of the home over the years. She was an active member of the Christian Science Church.

In the 1940s, she and Emily Perkins founded a tea room in Ogunquit. Over the years many prominent movie stars patronized the establishment including Katharine Hepburn and Zasu Pitts. She maintained friendships with them until their passing.

Her hobbies included rug hooking, bird watching, gardening and traveling. Her greatest joy was cooking holiday meals for her family.

She is predeceased by her parents, Edmund and Alice Perkins, her husband, Maurice G. Pickett, her sister, Lenore Cram, her brother, (Peachie) Forrest Weeks and son, Allan Weeks.

She is survived by one son, Gene Weeks; one daughter, Frances Pickett Hoel; nieces, Peggy White and Ginney Nadeau; grandchildren, Scott Weeks, Kathy Tirrell, Julie Mathieu, Jay Hoel, Andrea Spencer, and Allan Hartwell; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A private funeral service was held Saturday at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home in Springvale.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Christian Science Church, 33 School St., Sanford, ME 04073.

Richard Courtiss

DUXBURY, MASS. -- Richard M. Courtiss died Sept. 25, 2006.

Mr. Courtiss was born on May 2, 1936 in Cambridge, Mass. and grew up in Newton, Mass. He attended Syracuse University in New York, where he excelled at both lacrosse and football. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959.

Dick grew up spending his summers in Maine as a camper where his love for the industry was born. Dick went on to be a counselor, waterfront director and eventually a camp owner. For the past 30 years, until 2004, Dick spent his summers as the owner and director of Camp Vega, a private girl's camp in Kents Hill, Maine. Thousands of campers and counselors who passed through the gates at Vega will remember Dick as their "summer" dad.

When not at camp, Mr. Courtiss was an enthusiastic sports fan and avid supporter of Duxbury Youth Lacrosse.

Dick was the beloved husband of Theresa (Tetreault) Courtiss, son of the late Dr. Morris and Rosa (Grace) Courtiss, father of Sally Singer, Michele Schweitzer, Robert Schweitzer, all of N.Y., Steven Courtiss of Weymouth and Kyle Courtiss of Brookline, brother of the late Dr. Eugene Courtiss of Brookline. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren.

A funeral service was held last Thursday at the Beth Jacob Community Center in Plymouth.

Contributions in Dick's memory may be made to Cranberry Hospice, 36 Cordage Circle, Plymouth, MA 02360.

Ruth Douglas

KENNEBUNK -- Mrs. Ruth F. (nee Weiler) Douglas, 83, retired Director of Communications for Ratheon Company's Wayland plant, died Sept. 28, 2006, at the Southern Maine Medical Center after a long illness.

Born in Boston, Mrs. Douglas was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Weiler and was a graduate of Jeremiah Burke High School and Chamberlain Junior College. She was an enthusiastic ballet dancer and figure skater in her younger years and an ardent animal lover throughout her life. She was an executive for Ratheon for 30 years. Before moving to Maine when she and her husband, George A. Douglas retired, Mrs. Douglas lived in Wayland.

She is survived by her husband; one son, George A. Douglas III; three nieces, Mrs. Francis Healey, Mrs. Charles Golden, Mrs. Stephen Barrett, all of Braintree; two nephews, William Weiler of Plymouth, Mass. and Edward Weiler of Braintree.

A memorial service was held on Sunday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Paul Cronin

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- Paul Edwin Cronin, a retired metallurgical engineer, died Oct. 16, 2006, at St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham, Mass. after a long and well-lived life of 89 years.

A deeply loving and loved husband, father and grandfather, he was born in Belmont, Mass., the son of Jeremiah and Julia (Cullinane) Cronin. He attended schools in Woburn, Mass. and graduated from Woburn High School, where he played football and hockey. He was also an avid skier, and later in life, a cyclist.

He attended Franklin Technical Institute and received a B.S. degree from Boston College. He was employed with Worthington Corporation in Holyoke, Mass., American Machine Foundry in Greenwich, Conn., and Remington/DuPont in Bridgeport, Conn. During his working life he resided in Winchester and Northampton, Mass. and Fairfield, Conn., retiring to Kennebunk in 1982.

He was a lifetime member of American Society for Metals, a member of the Engineering Society of Western Mass., as well as a member of the Retirees Club of DuPont.

He was a daily communicant of St. Martha's Church in Kennebunk. There, until illness overtook him, he and his wife, Ammette, spent the years walking the beach each day, traveling, and hosting many visits from their children and grandchildren.

He was a well-known figure in the Kennebunks for his bicycle with the orange safety flag affixed to a slender pole on the rear wheel. Every year, until he was 85 years old, he rode at least 1,000 miles, mileage dutifully recorded on an annual chart in his garage, inspiring his grandchildren, when they came to visit, to go for a bike ride with him.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Annette (Pelletier) Cronin of Carmel Terrace in Framingham. Also surviving are son Peter Cronin and his wife Donna of Manhattan and Dorset, Vt.; daughter Jane Cronin Ayoub and her husband Paul of Milton, Mass., and daughter Elizabeth Cronin Urban and her husband Michael of Wellesley, Mass.; granddaughters Polly, Emmie, and Pippa Cronin, all of Manhattan, Lizzie Ayoub of Milton, Jane Urban of Wellesley, Marianne Cronin of London, England; step-granddaughter Hilary Nammack of Manhattan; sister Elizabeth Harrington; brother Robert Cronin, both of Woburn; many nieces and nephews.

Service notice: A funeral Mass will take place at St. Martha's Church in Kennebunk at 1 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be at Hope cemetery in Kennebunk.

Arrangements are by Eugene J. McCarthy & Sons Funeral Home, Framingham, Mass.

Dorothy Brown

WELLS -- Dorothy M. Brown, age 91, of Sanford Road, passed away Oct. 17, 2006, in York Hospital.

She was born July 10, 1915, in Wells, a daughter of Harry G. and Jennie (Stevens) Boston. Dorothy was the Valedictorian of her graduating class of 1932 from Wells High School.

She married Robert K. Brown in Wells on Oct. 2, 1938, and worked with him in their family business until retirement in 1973. Family was always her first priority and she will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She was pre-deceased by her husband in 1986, a daughter, Sandra Brown Phinney in 1998, two brothers, Carl Porter Boston and Harry Boston Jr., and two sisters, Anna Ricker and Laura Ross.

Surviving are one son, Richard R. Brown of Moody; grandsons, Matthew McCrellis of Rochester, N.H. and Troy Brown of Moody; and granddaughter, Debra McCrellis of Dover, N.H.

Funeral services were held on Oct. 20, 2006, at the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Amy Doane

BIDDEFORD--Amy D. Doane, 32, of Ross Road in Kennebunk, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

She was born in Biddeford, on Oct. 15, 1974, the daughter of Kenneth L. Smith and Elizabeth C. Doane and was educated in Kennebunk and Saco schools, graduating from Thornton Academy with the class of 1992. She then attended the University of New England in Biddeford.

Miss Doane worked as a waitress at the Glen Mor Restaurant and at the Kerryman Pub in Saco.

Amy is survived by her daughter Morgan Campbell of Kennebunkport; her father Kenneth Smith of Kennebunk and her mother Elizabeth D. Emmons of Saco; her stepfather Duke Emmons of Kennebunk; and her two half brothers Chris Emmons of Kennebunk, and Nick Emmons of Kennebunk; and several cousins.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the National Kidney Foundation, P.O. Box 1134, Portland, ME 04104-1134, www.kidneyme.org. Arrangements are under the direction of Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Mary Fitzpatrick

GREENWELL SPRINGS, La./KENNEBUNK--Mary Ann Fitzpatrick, 61, died Sunday evening, Oct. 22, 2006, at her residence in Greenwell Springs, La.

She was the widow of Paul W. Fitzpatrick Jr. formerly of Kennebunk. She joins her late husband in the heavenly kingdom our Lord has prepared for us.

Mary was born in Bath on July 21, 1945, a daughter of William L. and Dorothy L. Buckley Wyman. She attended Portland Schools and graduated from Portland High School. She was employed for several years at Morningstar Corp. in Kennebunk. For the past 30 years she lived in Louisiana and was a Secretary at the Wal-Mart store in Baton Rouge, La. for over 23 years. Her family and especially her grandchildren were the love of her life.

Mrs. Fitzpatrick was pre-deceased her husband Paul, a brother Thomas Wyman, a stepson Patrick Fitzpatrick and a stepdaughter Kathleen Daughtry.

She is survived by one son, Jason Fitzpatrick and his wife Kathleen; two daughters, Patti Freeman and her husband James and Pamela Fitzpatrick, all of Baton Rouge, La.; five grandchildren, Megan Noland, Lauren Noland, Lindsey Noland, Mary (Katie) Freeman, and Maya Trahan, all of Louisiana; two brothers, John Wyman of Biddeford, Donald Wyman of South Portland; four sisters, Harriet Harmon of Portland, Carolyn Sutton of Portland, Linda Nadeau of Old Orchard Beach, Dorothy Thompson of Lincoln Center; one stepson, Paul Fitzpatrick Jr. of Saco; one stepdaughter, Kelley Archer of Saco; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Service notice: Friends may call at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, today, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday with the Rev. James King officiating. Interment in Forest City Cemetery, South Portland.

Arrangements are by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Mary Bane

YORK — Mary L. Bane, 90, died June 11, 2006, surrounded by the compassionate folks of the Pavilion, on the campus of Goodall Hospital, in Sanford, where she was so very fortunate to be a resident. She loved each and every staff member and always thanked them accordingly. Her gift to us is the love she sent our way, especially these past few weeks. A lifelong learner, she was in her 80s when she took up bowling and swimming thanks to her friend Justin Lewis of Sentry Hill Day Care Program. She spent many wonderful days at Sentry Hill and that was a wonderful bridge that she was able to cross to arrive at the Pavilion. At 78, she climbed Mt. Washington with her daughter Eileen. Besides Hiking, she also enjoyed walks on the beach, bird watching, gardening and spending time with her pets and children. She was a very active participant of the Grandfriends Program under the direction of Kathy Welch and her fourth-grade students from Coastal Ridge Elementary School.

Sante and Eileen Guiliani would like to thank their friends and neighbors for all their kindness and especially for including her as part of their family these past years. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no services. Many will remember her in different ways.

Lillian Biewend

CAPE NEDDICK — Lillian (Bradish) Biewend, 97, of Cape Neddick, died March 19, 2006, at home.

She was born in Hallock, Minn., Aug. 13, 1908, the daughter of the late John H. Bradish and Kathleen H. (Suffel) Bradish.

She was a graduate of the University of North Dakota Class of 1930, and a Tri Delta sorority member.

She is the recent widow of Cameron Biewend, and predeceased by one brother, John H. Bradish Jr. and grandson, Christopher L. Linney.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Rebecca L. and David L. Linne, one granddaughter, Shanlee D. Ginchereau, two great-grandchildren, Mikaylee M., Livia C., and Breckyn C. Ginchereau, all of Cape Neddick; one cousin, Mary-Leigh C. Smart of York; one sister-in-law, Margaret Ernest Bradish, and one nephew Peter K. Bradish, both of Florida.

He passion for the outdoors nurtured a lifetime of gardening and during the winters she enjoyed figure skating and needlepoint. It was her pleasure to support civic projects and work for various organizations. She was petite in stature but cast a distinguishing shadow over her family and friends. The family is most appreciative of her excellent care for the past 12 years. Always encouraging, sensible, wise, honest, practical, and fun loving, she will be missed by many.

A memorial service for Lillian (Bradish) Biewend will be held on June 24, at 10:30 a.m., in St. George’s Episcopal Church, York Harbor. Those who wish to remember her in a special way may make a gift in her memory to the Lyle Littlefield Ornamentals Trial Garden Endowment Fund, to ensure the garden’s continuance for decades to come, as well as research, teaching and outreach activities, at the University of Maine. BONNEY — On Feb. 16. Bonnie Bilderback Bonney passed away in Destin, Fla. A memorial service will be held in her honor at the Colony Hotel, Kennebunkport, Sunday, June 25, at 1 p.m. After the service there will be a reception at the American Legion Hall in Cape Porpoise.
