Carl Brown Sr.

WELLS — Carl E. Brown Sr., 85, a resident of Wells Highlands, Wells died June 4, 2006, at the Kennebunk Nursing Home after a brief illness.

He was born in Wells, on Sept. 23, 1920, a son of Charles E. and Mabel Louise (Gott) Brown and attended Wells schools.

He served with the United States Army in World War II.

He was employed by the state of Maine and Portsmouth Naval Yard as truck driver for several years, then he was a heavy-equipment mechanic for Pease Air Force Base for more than 23 years. During his retirement, he opened and operated a lawnmower business for 10 years in Wells. He was a member of the Ocean Lodge Masonic of Wells.

He enjoyed dancing and square dancing with his late wife Irene.

He was predeceased by his wife Irene L. (Sevigney) Brown, who died in 2003, his three brothers Harry E., John P. and Charles A. Brown and a sister, Eleanor Ester Wildes.

He is survived by one son, Carl E. Brown Jr. and his wife Crystal, of Wells; one granddaughter, Debra Brown and her husband Wayne, of Wells; one great-grandson, Jeffery Brown of Wells; and three sisters, Mary Louise Coggeshall, Doris Winnifield Clogston and Lillian Gertrude Chase, all of Wells; and several nieces and nephews.

Private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Should friends desire, memorial donation may be made to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086, in his memory.

Wanda Cannell Sr.

SOUTH BERWICK —Wanda P. Cannell Sr., 93, former resident of Coral Gables, Fla., and Kennebunkport, Maine, passed away June 7, 2006, at home in South Berwick, with her daughter and son-in-law by her side.

She was born in Miami, Fla., on Nov. 7, 1912, a daughter of the late William Edgar and Nelle (Gayle) Dawson.

She grew up in the Miami and Coral Gables area of Florida. She graduated from Miami High School and the University of Miami.

She was a very well-known “blues” singer in many of the local nightclubs. She later traveled and was quite popular all over the United States. She sang with many different famous bands, including Guy Lombardo. In 1933, she married Ennis T. Peterson, a piano player with his own band and she became his singer. They traveled and played in many nightclubs and theaters. Throughout her life, home was Coral Gables. She was co-founder of the Flamingo Club, a social group, and a very active member in the Cancer Society and the Coral Gables Woman’s Club. She was an avid bridge player. She always said that she would rather play bridge than eat or sleep. She often played at the Riviera and the Coral Gables Country Clubs where her family were members.

She was predeceased by her husband of 32 years, Ennis (Pete) Peterson and also their son, William Ennis Peterson at 16 years of age. She was also predeceased by her brother, Braden Forrest Dawson Sr., as well as her parents.

While attending the birth of her first grandchild in Kennebunk, she met her future husband of 23 years, J. Elliot Cannell. The couple lived six months in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Fla., and the remaining six months in Kennebunkport, where they were members of the Kennebunkport Yacht Club and she volunteered for many years at the Nott House. She also was an active member of the Senior Center at Lower Village in Kennebunk, as well as the Fifty Plus Club in West Kennebunk. She belonged to many bridge groups.

Mr. Cannell passed away in 1991. She moved in with her daughter and son-in-law, Wanda Jr. and Peter Cannell. The family moved to South Berwick where she was a member of the South Berwick Senior Center.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Wanda, her husband Pete Cannell, and her daughter Pamela Elayne Peterson of California. She will be missed very much by her grandchildren, George J. Seegel and wife Melissa, Wanda G. Cluff, William E. Seegel and wife Gretchen, Peter J. Cannell Jr., Christopher E. Seegel and wife Cecelia, as well as her eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells, with Rev. Carolyn Lambert officiating.

Interment was at her home cemetery in South Berwick.

If desired, donations may be made in her memory to Southern Maine Health and Homecare Services, PO Box 739, Kennebunk, ME 04043.

The family would like to express its deepest gratitude and thanks to Dr. Nathan Wilson, as well as the members of the SMHHS for the loving and professional care which they have provided to our mother for the last six years, namely Linda Sentner, R.N.; Stephanie DeFanti, R.N.; Deb Christian, Social Worker; and our wonderful Home Health Aides, Joanne Bond, Becky Seward, Rebecca Yoshida, Katrina Randall, Terri Blaisdell, and Bonnie Collins. Thank you so much.

James Fortunato

MOODY — James M. “Jack” Fortunato, 77, of Moody, formerly of Reading and Middleton, Mass., died May 10, 2006, at Southern Maine Medical Center, Biddeford.

He was born in Everett, Mass., on Sept. 23, 1928.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He graduated from Bentley College and was employed at WR Grace Company in Cambridge, Mass., and Lexington, Mass., for 25 years. He loved traveling through Italy and Naples, Fla., and spending summers at his cottage at Moody Beach, which he built in 1966.

He was the beloved husband of the late Susan “Sue” (Duff); father of Dorothy Costello and her husband James, of Reading, Mass., Janet Slade and her husband Daniel, of Gardiner, Susan Dickey and her husband Bruce, of Lynnfield, and Louise DeLorenzo and her husband Dana, of Kennebunk; brother of Clara Foley of Portland, and Victoria Hickey of Virginia Beach, Va.; grandfather of Daniel, Kristine, and Caroline Costello, Andrew and Lauren Slade, Abigail Emily, Barbara and Suzanne Dickey and Maria, Nicco, and Dante DeLorenzo; and close friend of Madelyn Beauregard of Moody.

A funeral was held at St. Athanasius Church, Reading, Mass., on May 15.

Gwen Hall

KENNEBUNK — Gwen (Lundin) Hall, 76, beloved wife of Robert J. Hall of Paxton, Mass., and Kennebunk, Maine, died in Maine Medical Center, Portland, on June 8, 2006, after suffering a heart attack in her Kennebunk home.

The daughter of Eric and Helen Lundin, she is survived by her husband of 56 years, and her four children and nine grandchildren, Barbara and Thomas Socha of Paxton, and children David and Laura, James and Laurie Hall of Scituate, Mass., and sons Justin and Gregory, John and Amy Hall of Cincinnati, Ohio, and children Kristen, Eric and Leah, and Claudia and Michael Karpinski of Corvallis, Ore. and their children Nolan and Carl.

She graduated from North High School (class of 1947), and attended Clark University and Becker Junior College. She later worked at Paul Revere Insurance Company and Alan-Barry Hardware.

She was a courageous battler of multiple sclerosis for some 40 years, but never let the disease dictate her life. She served as president of the WPI Faculty Wives Club, a trustee of Richards Memorial Library, Paxton, for 18 years, and an avid quilter herself, served as the unofficial leader of a quilters’ group which met at the library every Monday for many years.

Ernest Lord

WELLS — Ernest Robert Lord, 69, of Whispering Pines Circle, Wells, died suddenly June 7, 2006, at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.

He was born in Southbridge, Mass., on July 11, 1936, the son of Ernest and Mary (Cunning) Lord. He attended local schools and graduated from Wells High School. He ran his own contracting and construction firm and was well known in the area. He married Verna Susie Chambers on June 12, 1965.

He was the Past Master of Ocean Lodge A.F.&A.M. in Wells.

He enjoyed the outdoors and all the activities associated with it; hunting, fishing, camping, and shooting. He also enjoyed playing chess and cribbage.

His wife of 41 years, Verna Susie Lord; two daughters, Lisa Gould and her husband David, of North Berwick and Jennifer Toussaint and her husband Shawn, of Sanford; three sisters, Vera Palmer, Alma Kezar, and Ruby Hussey; and five grandchildren, survive him.

A Masonic service was held Saturday, at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells, by Ocean Lodge.`

Memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.

Lillian Pelletier

SANFORD — Lillian M. Pelletier, 92, of Sanford, died June 4, 2006, at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.

She was born in Sanford, on May 2, 1914, the daughter of Guy and Exilia (Genest) Blanchard. She attended the Center Lebanon Grade School and graduated from the West Lebanon Academy in 1931. She was also a member of the last graduating class from H.D. Goodall Hospital School of Nursing, in 1934. She graduated as a registered nurse and was employed by Goodall Hospital and also did private-duty nursing. She and her husband Roland owned and operated the former Pelletier’s Market on Errol Street, for more than 40 years.

She was a lifelong resident of Sanford, a communicant of Holy Family Parish and a member of the Ladies of Ste. Anne.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roland; one sister, Mildred Blanchard Stewart; and two brothers, Wesley and Roland Blanchard.

She is survived by three daughters, Gloria Laitres of Sanford, Theresa Rankin of Shapleigh, and Rachel Pelletier of Lyman; six sons, Donald, Lionel and Richard of Sanford, Albert of Kennebunk, Paul of Wells and Raymond of Londonderry, N.H.; three sisters, Geneva Turner of Waterboro, Rita Ricker of Sanford and Clara Quint of Tennessee; 24 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 8, at Holy Family Church, Sanford; Interment followed at St. Ignatius cemetery in Sanford.

Kathryn Santiago

KENNEBUNK — born Feb. 8, 1937, to Bert and Caroline Bragdon of Lower Village, Kennebunk, Kathryn O. Santiago attended schools in the Kennebunks. As a teen, she worked at Seaward’s Variety in Kennebunkport, and taught piano to several local children. She pursued her interest in music by participating in the band program at Kennebunk High School. She graduated from KHS in 1955. In 1960, she completed a Bachelor of Science degree in music education at Bob Jones University, Greenville, S.C. She was a talented musician, having been trained in voice, piano, and several woodwind instruments.

Following college, the Village Baptist Church sponsored her as a missionary to Puerto Rico. While in Puerto Rico, she married Benjamin Santiago and they had one daughter, Kristen. During the 1980s, she brought her family to Maine and in 1987, she became the music teacher at the Vivian E. Hussey School in Berwick. She retired in June 2004. She was very active at her church, serving as pianist and choir director and was also on the board of directors. In January of 2006, she and her husband returned to Puerto Rico.

She passed away on May 23, 2006, in Ponce, where she was buried.

She is survived by her husband; one daughter; and two granddaughters, Veronica and Knatyak. She was also loved by one niece and two nephews, and one grandniece and two grandnephews.

A memorial service for Kathryn O. Santiago will be held on Saturday, at 11 a.m., at the Village Baptist Church, 6 Maine St., Kennebunkport.

STEVENS — Barrett Whitney Stevens, 98, died on April 10, 2006. There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 138 York St., in Kennebunk. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Mark Zeiner

SPRUCE HEAD — Mark Austin Zeiner, 52, formerly of Kennebunkport, passed away June 10, 2006, due to complications of Type 1 diabetes at his parent’s home, surrounded by his family.

Born in Portland, March 20, 1954, he was the son of Charles H. and Dorcas (Eldridge) Zeiner.

Educated in Kennebunkport schools, he went on to work with the Maine Turnpike Authority, Tom’s of Maine, as an apprentice plumber and sternman.

From the age of 13, he struggled with diabetes, yet despite many obstacles always had a strong will to live.

His family remembers him as a kind, compassionate, loving, son, brother and friend.

He especially loved his dogs, Betty, Boomer and Styx, who all pre-deceased him. He loved to hunt, fish, garden and sit in front of a campfire.

He is survived by his parents of Spruce Head; two sisters, Lorrie Larson and her husband Ron, of Rockland, Kelly Zeiner and her husband Ernest Piper III, of Anchorage, Alaska; one brother, Charles F. “Chip” Zeiner and his partner Karen Andrews, of Kennebunkport; nieces and nephews including Josh Miller and his wife Jasmine, of Tenants Harbor, Clint Miller of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Ernie, Jari and Eliot Piper of Anchorage, Alaska, Lauren, Alexandra and Samuel of Kennebunkport; as well as one great-niece, Sophia Bella Miller of Tenants Harbor.

A memorial service will be held today at 1:30 p.m., at South Congregational Church, Temple Street, Kennebunkport.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Animal Welfare Society Inc., PO Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094.

Barbara Brown Pooler

SANFORD "" Barbara Brown Pooler, 82, died Dec. 22, 2006, at the Greenwood Center in Sanford.

Blessed are the meek and gentle spirit was she.

She was predeceased by her loving parents Ernest W. Brown and Sylvia Ann Moulton Brown of Kennebunk; and her brother Keith P. Brown.

Barbara is survived by her husband Elvert Pooler of Sanford; her three children, Karen Dargis and her husband Paul of Kennebunk, Anna Curtis Ingalls of Alfred, Dexter Curtis and his wife Sally of Wells; and her sister Martha Brown McLean of Kennebunk.

Barbara was a much loved and "special" grandmother to Lisa Dargis of Saco, Jessica Ingalls Jarvis of Arundel, Tara Ingalls of Calif., Shellie Curtis Davis of Idaho, Tracie Curtis of Old Orchard Beach, and Jaime Curtis Neilson of Parsonfield. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren; Michael and Megan Nickerson; Wade and Webber Jarvis; Kayla, Phillip and Jackson Davis; Zachary Curtis and Colby Neilson.

In her earlier years Barbara was active in church activities including choir, bible studies, baking for church suppers and was a member of The Order of Eastern Star.

She so enjoyed the special times when she could be together with her family at back yard barbeques or cooking for many Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.

For many years she traveled with her husband Elvert to Florida where they had a cozy little home in a nice park. They had many wonderful friends together many of whom still correspond with Elvert today.

Barbara always had a beautiful smile, a gentle and loving spirit, a kind word and many prayers for all her loved ones.

She was our loving mother and wife and is now our Guardian Angel.

A family celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Marlin Trafton

SOUTH BERWICK-- Marlin E. Trafton, 77, formerly of South Berwick, died Dec. 25, 2006 at Greenwood Center in Sanford.

He was born in York, June 17, 1929 the son of Burton and Christina (Hooper) Trafton.

He was educated at local schools. Marlin and his wife were the caretakers for the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiques, which operate the Hamilton House and Jewett House located in South Berwick. Working in this capacity fueled his interest in woodworking and restoring old houses, and membership in the Ogunquit Archeology Association.

Marlin enjoyed spending his free time with his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

He was a longtime member of The Bible Speaks, South Berwick.

His beloved wife, Joyce (Peterson) Trafton died Jan. 16, 2004. Members of his family include; his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Susan Trafton of Berwick; his daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Darryl Sullivan of South Berwick, as well as Chris and Edward "EJ" Mros of Berwick.

His beloved grandchildren, Sarah Eaton, Seth Goldworthy, Rebecca, Jesse, Korie and Cody Mros, Casey, Nicholas and Elizabeth Trafton; and great-grandchildren, Austin Lagill, Nicholas Eaton, Jacob Goldworthy and Kaden Mros.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held today, Dec. 28, 2006 at 11 a.m. in Woodlawn Cemetery, South Berwick with Pastor Bruce Brown, The Bible Speaks officiating.
