Claudia Arnold

MANCHESTER — Claudia Quirion Arnold, 83, of Manchester, passed away peacefully Jan. 11, 2007, at Southern Maine Medical Center surrounded by her family.

She was born in Augusta Feb. 10, 1923, the daughter of Arthur and Yvonne (Guimond) Quirion. Claudia was married to Joseph Arnold, of Manchester Dec. 18, 1946, and resided there until May 2006, when she moved to Kennebunk to live with her daughter. In her career, she worked at Taylor Shoe Shop, Manchester Elementary School lunch program, the Togus Veterans Administration Canteen, Hopkins Greenhouse, and since her retirement, helped both daughters in their businesses, The Flower Cart of Augusta and Kennebunk Beach Realty. Her most important career, however, was that of homemaker, instilling the importance of family.

Mrs. Arnold also volunteered at the Manchester Elementary School health program, was a classroom volunteer for her grandchildren and served as an assistant Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She was a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Manchester Fire Department, the Manchester Extension and the Winthrop Business and Professional Women’s Club. Her hobbies included gardening, reading, quilting, sewing, crocheting and knitting.

Claudia was predeceased by her parents; husband of 56 years, Joe; sisters, Rose Castonguay, Florida Pelletier and Rita Gammon; and her son-in-law, Paul Gagnon.

Claudia was a loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by two daughters, Arlene M. Gagnon of Manchester and Gail Ann Arnold and companion, David Popolizio, of Kennebunk; two granddaughters, who were the apples of her eye, Angela Gagnon and her companion Steven Burroughs, and Jessica Gagnon and her companion, James Frost, all of Manchester; Claudia’s little men, great-grandsons Alex, Dylan and Jayden Burroughs; sisters, Cecile Rowe, of Farmingdale and Yvette Marshall, of Augusta; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at the Manchester Community Church on Jan. 16.

Burial followed at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.

Claudia’s family is appreciative of the many care-givers who lent a loving hand over the past several years, especially Nancy Coniff, Sheila Crowell, Ginny Hammer, Maureen Maurice, Carol Hanscom, and Sarah McDevitt.

Margaret Wormwood

KENNEBUNK — Margaret C. Wormwood, 90, a resident of Hillcrest Drive, died Jan. 11, 2007, at the Southridge Living Center in Biddeford, after long illness.

Margaret was born in Bangor, Feb. 29, 1916, a daughter of David and Beatrice Shannon Tremblay. She graduated from Kennebunk High School Class of 1935. She then became employed at New England Electric Company in Westboro, Mass., for over 15 years. She was an active communicant of St. Martha’s Church serving as accountant for several years, a member of the Women’s Guild of the Church, serving as president and member of the board. She volunteered her time at the Kennebunk Nursing Home with weekly prayers and rosary prayers for many years. Margaret was also active with the Kennebunk Public Health Council working on Blood Drives for the Red Cross and the council; many of these drives were held at St. Martha’s.

She was married to the late Charles M. Wormwood, who died in 1985. She is also predeceased by four brothers, Norman Tremblay, Lawrence Tremblay, Albert Tremblay, and Phillip Tremblay; and two sisters, Gertrude E. Hutchins and Elizabeth Moore.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ivan “ Peggy” Cole of Kennebunk; one sister, Mrs. George Harriet McKenney of Kennebunk and Scottsdale, Ariz.; and a granddaughter, Allison Cole of Kennebunk.

The family wishes to thank the Southridge Living Center for their exceptional care and compassion during these last few months of Margaret’s life.

A funeral Mass was held Jan. 16 at St. Martha’s Church, Kennebunk, with Interment following in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the Good Shepherd Food Bank, P.O. Box 1807, Auburn, ME 04211-1807 in Mrs. Wormwood’s memory.

Frank McLeod

WELLS — Frank T. McLeod Jr., 73, owner McLeod’s Trailer Service, died Dec. 27, 2006, at his daughter’s home in Taunton, Mass.

Born in Randolph, Mass., he was a graduate of Howard High School in West Bridgewater, Mass. Mr. McLeod was a member of the Elks Club in Wells.

He is survived by his daughters, Valerie Fagan and Heidi Ceriani, both of Taunton, Mass; his siblings, Geraldine West of Providence, R.I., Angus McLeod and Richard McLeod, both of Brockton, Mass., Harold Denley of East Bridgewater Mass., Mary Jane Drane of Easton, Mass.; his former wife Barbara (Reed) McLeod; four grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also a brother of the late Nellie Pina.

Service notice — A memorial service will be held Saturday Jan. 20, at 11 a.m., at the Trailblazers Club on Bill’s Lane in Wells.

Eleanor Speers

KENNEBUNKPORT — Eleanor J. Speers, 82, of Wildes District Road, died Jan. 12, 2007, at Southern Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Syracuse, N.Y., the daughter of Donald and Bertha (Ladd) Blanchard. She was educated in Syracuse schools, and graduated from Juliett School of Design in New York.

On Sept. 4, 1960, she married Norman E. Speers in Syracuse.

Eleanor and her husband provided elder care in their home for more than 20 years. She was a member of the Madonna Chapter #144, Order of the Eastern Star.

Eleanor was an avid crafts person who enjoyed rug braiding, knitting and upholstering. She was known as a very giving person, and was a generous donor to many charitable causes.

Survivors include her loving husband of 46 years, of Kennebunkport; her son, Arthur Speers of Syracuse, N.Y.; a brother, George Blanchard of Durham, Conn.; two grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

An Eastern Star service was held Jan. 17 at Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport, followed by a graveside service with the Rev. Richard Horner officiating.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to The Animal Welfare Society, P.O .Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094; or Madonna Chapter #144, Order of the Eastern Star, c/o Roma Pelletier, 53 Limerick Road, Arundel, ME 04046.

Christine Wyman

BERWICK — Christine C. Wyman, 84, of School Street, died Jan. 13, 2007, in the morning at Frisbee Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.H. She was born in Berwick on Oct.. 2, 1922, the daughter of Samuel A. and Syreina G. (Guptill) Chick. She received her primary education in the Berwick School system. Christine graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1944.

In 1946, she married Linwood S. Wyman, and they enjoyed 56 years together until his death in January 2002.

Christine held a variety of positions over the years. Upon graduation from UNH, she was employed as a dietician at Phillips Exeter Academy. She then taught in the South Berwick school system for 5 years. This was followed by her appointment as Stratford County 4H Agent, through the UNH co-operative program.

She was a member of the Sarah Orne Jewett Chapter #176, Order of the Eastern Star, South Berwick.

Christine enjoyed computers, knitting, cross-stitching, and puzzles. She and her husband also enjoyed summers in Wells.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna Lee O’Driscoll of Berwick; two granddaughters Stacy-Lee Emery of Kittery Point; Sarah Jane Cesario of North Berwick; three great grandchildren.

Service Notice-

Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, Jan. 20, from 10-11 a.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells. During the visitation, at 10:30 a.m., an Eastern Star service will be held with members of Sara Orne Jewett Chapter #176. A Memorial Service will follow at 11 a.m. at the Chapel with the Rev. Cindy Nickerson officiating.

Christine’s urn will be interred alongside her husband in the Spring in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her memory may be made to: The American Heart Association, 51 U.S. Route One, Scarborough, ME 04074; or The American Lung Association of Maine, 122 State Street, Augusta, ME 04330.

Robert Hutchins

PHILADELPHIA — Robert Douglass Hutchins, 65, died Dec. 16, 2006 after a long illness.

Robert was born in Biddeford on Dec. 26, 1941. He was a 1961 graduate of Kennebunk High School where he played on the football team.

Robert proudly served in the United States Navy. He was an electrician with local #98 in Philadelphia, Pa., for 30 years, until his retirement.

He enjoyed fishing and deer hunting. He loved his Labrador Retrievers.

Robert was predeceased by two sons, Robert Hutchins Jr. and David Hutchins.

He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife Jean Hutchins.

In addition to his wife Robert is survived by his mother Gwendolyn Grzeika of Kennebunk; a son, Scott Hutchins of Philadelphia, Pa.; a daughter Kimberly Hutchins of South Portland; a step-daughter Kia Swineton of Philadelphia, Pa; two brothers, Joe Skibicki of Kennebunk and Douglass Skibicki of Buxton; two sisters Jane Storer of Poland and Heidi Souliere of Kennebunk; three grandchildren, Niles Hutchins, Collin Hutchins and his pride and joy Danielle Swineton. Robert will also be missed by his long time friend Jack Lewis.

Robert was a big man with an even bigger heart, always willing to lend a helping hand.

Robert had a great love for the ocean. At his last request Robert was cremated and his ashes spread out to sea.

Maria Snyder

MOODY — Maria Snyder, 95, died peacefully in her home in Moody on Dec. 15, 2006 after a brief illness. Her daughter, Deborah, was by her side.

Born on Feb. 20, 1911 in New York City, Maria was the third eldest of eleven children born to Antonia and Giustino Sallusto from Naples, Italy. She moved to the Borough Park section of Brooklyn as a young child and lived there until moving with her husband, John; who she met while working at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.; to the southern Westchester County town of Eastchester, N.Y. Mother to Deborah and her older son Kirtland. Maria was active in her local parish of I.H.M. where she enjoyed arranging flowers for the altar, volunteering with the Veronica’s Guild and being a den mother for her children’s Brownie and Cub Scout troops. She also loved traveling, a good party with interesting people and her circle of friends was wide and diverse. A career woman long before it became fashionable, Maria held positions at the Scarsdale Medical Group, Pension Designs Inc., The Henry Depee Agency of Guardian Life, The Bank of New York and for fourteen years as secretary to former Scarsdale dentist, Dr. Richard C. Salerno before retiring at the age of eighty-two. She then moved to Maine with her daughter.

In addition to her children, Maria is survived by her grandson, Micah Snyder of Amherst, Mass.; two sisters, Helen and Blanche; and two brothers, Eugene and Edward.

In the spring, Maria’s ashes will be interred next to her husband at Mt. Calvary cemetery in White Plains, N.Y.

Donald Shuffleburg

KENNEBUNK -- Donald S. Shuffleburg, 81, of Kennebunk died at Southern Maine Medical Center on Feb. 4, 2007, after a long illness, surrounded by his family and friends.

He was born on April 22, 1925, in Kennebunk, a son of Elmer and Eleanor (Towne) Shuffleburg.

After attending Kennebunk Park Street High School, he entered the Army as an engineer and served overseas in Holland, Germany, Belgium, and France during World War II and received the Purple Heart.

After returning from the Army, he worked for ESSO on the Maine Turnpike for 19 years before opening Shuffleburg's Garage which he operated for 50 years. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. As a parishioner of Christ Church in Kennebunk, he worked tirelessly to help raise funds to refurbish the organ.

In 2002, along with many brother veterans who left school to defend their country in World War II, he was awarded his high school diploma, an accomplishment of which he was extremely proud.

Donald liked collecting baseball caps and replica cars, but his greatest joys were being with his family, swapping stories with his buddies in the garage and giving to his church.

He was devoted to his family and is survived by his wife Tissie (Tufts); his daughter, Dawn Beaucage; his grandchildren, Brooke Beaucage-Ghans, Derek Beaucage, Courtney Beaucage, Heath Shuffleburg and Wendell Shuffleburg; his 3 great-grandchildren, Jacob Ghans, Michaela Shuffleburg and Victoria Shuffleburg; a brother, Herman Shuffleburg; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Scott Shuffleburg; his brothers, Harold and Elmer Shuffleburg; and his sisters, Myra Reynolds, Annie Thompson, Doris Vigue and Gladys Hilton.

A funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Christ Church, 6 Dane St., Kennebunk.

Spring burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to The American Heart Association, 51 US Route 1, Scarborough, ME 04074.

David Lusty

YORK -- David L. Lusty, 77, of 22 Harris Island Road, died Jan. 31, 2007, in Sentry Hill with his family by his side after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for a period of time. He was born, May 31, 1929, in Troy, N.Y, son of A. Leland and Lois K. (Smith) Lusty. He was a graduate of Brown University and had served in the United States Navy. He was the founder of Dockside Guest Quarters and Restaurant and York Harbor Marine Service. He was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church and the York Historical Society. He was also past President of the York Chamber of Commerce and past Harbor Master. He was an avid sailor, gardener and story teller.

He leaves his wife of 51 years, Harriette (Sibley) Lusty; four sons, Paul H. Lusty and his wife Stephanie Weaver of Portland, Eric L. Lusty and his wife, Carol of York, Philip S. Lusty and his wife, Anne of York and John C. Lusty and his wife, Kimberly of Merrimack, Mass.; and his 10 grandchildren.

The memorial service for Mr. Lusty was held on Feb. 5, in the First Parish Congregational Church, York. Burial will be private in First Parish Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160 B, Portland, ME 04101.

Domenicantonio Giuliani

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Domenicantonio "Uncle Tony" Giuliani, 82, died Jan. 30, 2007, in St. Vincent Hospital after a brief illness.

His wife Antoinette (Azzarone) Giuliani died in 1976.

Domenic is survived by his loving children, a son Sante L. Giuliani, and his wife Eileen of York; a daughter Donna Giuliani of Worcester, Mass.; many nieces and nephews.

His brother, Leonardo Giuliani predeceased him.

Domenicantonio was born in Vieste, Foggia Italy on Jan. 13, 1925, son of Sante and Dominecamaria Giuliani and lived in Vieste until 1949 when he and Antoinette married and came to the United States in November of that year. Domenic became a naturalized citizen in 1954. He served in the Italian Navy from 1946 to 1948 where he was a chef for the officers. His love of cooking was only surpassed by his love of gardening, and making wine, where he placed best wine in the Worcester County Contest in 2004. Domenicantonio worked as a foreman for the Babyhood Industries for many years before he retired in 1990. Cooking, gardening, wine making and playing bocce, while entertaining his many friends was his passion in life that he really enjoyed. He will be missed by his many friends and relatives. He was a long time member of Our Lady Of Mt. Carmel-St. Ann Church.

Domenicantonio's funeral was held Feb. 3, at the Mercadante Funeral Home and Chapel, Worcester, Mass.; with a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady Of Mt Carmel-St Ann Church.

Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
