Kirtland Woodman

SANFORD -- Kirtland C. Woodman Jr., 82, passed away Jan. 28, 2007, at Henrietta D. Goodall Hospital after a brief period of failing health. "Jr." was born July 21, 1924, to Kirtland C. and Dorothy (Sprague) Woodman.

Jr. grew up in Effingham, N.H. He later moved to Sanford.

In his early days Jr. worked in the woods as a logger with his father and brothers. He later went to work for Hussey Seating Company in North Berwick for many years.

Jr. will be remembered for his great sense of humor and how he would always love a good laugh. If you couldn't find Jr. sitting around socializing with family you could find him Off Track Betting in Sanford with his son whom is also his best friend, Sonny. That was one of the many things that Jr. loved to do.

Besides his parents; Jr. was predeceased by two sisters Virginia and Evelyn.

He is survived by his loving companion of 35 years, Marlene Woodman and her son, Butch of Sanford; two sons Kirtland "Sonny" and James of Wells; three daughters, Helen McGowen of Rochester, N.H., Sandra Chadbourne of Milton, N.H., and Debbie Chandler of Berwick; two sisters Helen Matthews of Sanford, Florence LaBrie of Wells; two brothers, Harold of Sanford and Robert of Wells; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

At his request there will be no services.

Virginia Stevens

WELLS -- Virginia Barney Stevens, 87, of Parson Drive, died Feb. 3, 2007, at Seal Rock Healthcare in Saco surrounded by her loving children.

Virginia was born Aug. 11, 1919, in Providence, R.I., the daughter of Walter and Anna Gibson Barney. After high school she went on to earn her Bachelor's Degree from Smith College.

Virginia and her husband, Dexter Stevens, Jr., owned and operated Mapes Garden Center in Kennebunk for eight years after Dexter's retirement from Uniroyal Tire Company. Virginia enjoyed keeping the books and ordering the nursery stock. The business was the perfect outlet for their love of gardening.

She was a member of the Wells Historical Society, Friends of Wells Library, Good Cheer Club, Webhannet Women's Club, a senior exercise group and very active in the South Congregational Church.

Virginia enjoyed bridge, crossword puzzles, crafts, traveling, gardening, and feeding the birds. She was a very curious woman who kept up on world affairs. Often times if she heard of a story or place that she found intriguing, she would gather friends and/or family, and drive off to see it personally.

Virginia was predeceased by her husband of over 44 years, Dexter Stevens, Jr. in 1989.

Surviving are her sons Dexter Stevens III and his wife Donna of Groton, Mass., and Howard Stevens of Alexandria, Va.; her daughter Ann Stevens Johnsen and her husband Bernadou of Denver, Colo; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Feb. 6 at South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport.

Interment will follow in Ocean View cemetery in Wells.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to:

Arrangements are under the care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Edith Cook

ALFRED -- Edith M. Cook, 85, formerly a longtime resident of Kennebunk, died Feb. 3, 2007, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

She was born Sept. 8, 1921, in Kennebunk, a daughter of Eugene and Dora (Smith) Drown and attended Kennebunk schools. On Feb. 14, 1941, she married Joseph T. Cook and shared 21 years of marriage before his death in 1962. Mrs. Cook made her home in Kennebunk until moving to Alfred to be near her sister in 2005.

Mrs. Cook was a hard worker who was employed with the York Heel Company in Biddeford and for many years worked at Courtney Cleaners in Kennebunk, retiring at the age of 80. She was devoted to her family and would be readily available to drive her many nieces and nephews to special activities and events. She enjoyed needlework, flower gardening and driving down by the beach each day. The family camp in South Casco was a place to gather with family and friends.

Family survivors include her daughter Joan Cook and husband Stephen Canders of Kennebunk; one sister, Eugena Brown of Alfred; many nieces, nephews, cousins and grand nieces and grand nephews.

She was predeceased by 3 brothers, Elliot Drown, Raymond Drown and Clarence Drown; and one sister, Irma Lord.

A graveside Service will be held later in the spring at Hope cemetery in Kennebunk.

There will be no calling hours.

Gertrude Whittington

KENNEBUNK -- Gertrude Helen "Trudy" Whittington, 67, of Sea Road, formerly of La Habra, Calif., died peacefully at Maine Medical Center on Feb. 2, 2007, after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family.

Trudy was born Nov. 27, 1939, in Norfolk, Va. a twin daughter of James and Lydia Kabanoff Norwood. After moving to California, Trudy graduated from Lowell High School in San Francisco. She married Johnnie C. Whittington on Feb. 22, 1958. They celebrated over 43 years of marriage until his death in 2001. Trudy and her two sisters, Jenny and Catherine, decided to move to the East Coast together. They settled in Kennebunk to enjoy the beauty and the change of seasons that Maine has to offer.

Trudy loved caring of her family and their home. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and gardening, especially flower gardening. Trudy was very creative and enjoyed writing poems and songs. She also enjoyed puzzles, both crossword and jumbles, anything that would challenge her quick mind. She was a very giving person who donated to many charities, especially for the care of animals.

Trudy is survived by her son Walter Whittington of Eureka, Calif.; and her sisters Jenny Gallo and Catherine Norwood.

Service Notice-

Visiting hours will be held today, Feb. 8 from 6-8 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kennebunk with Rev. Norman Bumby officiating.

Interment will follow in Arundel Cemetery.

Dorothy and Edward Waitzkin

SALINAS, Calif. -- Dorothy and Edward Waitzkin died Jan. 18, 2007, when their car was struck head on in an accident still under investigation.

Dorothy, 83, and Ed, 85, grew up in Akron, Ohio. They married shortly after completing high school and last year celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.

The Waitzkins requested no formal memorial service. A celebration of their lives took place at Temple El, Salinas, Calif. on Jan. 21 and creamation took place on Jan. 22.

They are survived by their sons, Howard of Taos, N.M, and Richard of Portland; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Shirley Lederman of Akron, Ohio and their family, Ron Lederman of Akro, Ohio and his family, Janet Galanti of Atlanta, Ga. and her family; a nephew, William Soroka of Chester, N.Y. and his family; a nephew, Dennis Stein of Penellas Park, Fla.; a neice, Harriet Schlinger of Chester, N.Y. and her family; a daughter-in-law, Sofia Borges of Los Angeles, Calif.; a step-granddaughter, Raiya Sankari Diaz of Appleton, Wis.; a step-grandson, Alfredo Diaz of Appleton, Wis.; and a step-great-grandson Alfredo Farouk Diaz of Appleton, Wis.

To honor their memory, donations may be designated for the Dubby and Ed Waitzkin Memorial Fund at the Salvador Allende Program in Social Medicine; P.O. Box 402, Sandia Park, NM 87047; for uninsured or under insured people. Or to your favorite political, social service or performing arts cause.

Kenneth Boehner

LIVINGSTON, Texas -- Kenneth Dixey Boehner, 77, Livingston, Texas and Wells Beach passed away Jan. 28, 2007, at home after a long illness. Kenneth, son of Mary Dixey Boehner and Robert Merrill Boener, was born April 19, 1929.

He graduated from Tabor Acedemy, attended the Coast Guard Academy and graduated from the University of Maine, Orono in Public Administration. He was a Lt. Commander in the US Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict. Kenneth was a member of the BPOE Lebanon, N.H. #2099, Saint James Lodge #102 Hampton, N.H. as well as several RV groups.

Since 1955 he worked as a Town or City Manager in New Hampshire, retiring in 1989 after serving 18 years as the first City Manager of Laconia.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years June Carroll Boehner; son, John P. Boehner and wife Melissa of Belmont; daughter Tracy E. Boehner of Laconia; grandchildren, Amanda and Adam Boehner also of Belmont; sister Betty B. Bliven and husband Raymond of Summerdale, Ala; niece, Cheryl Bliven Hattat and husband Jeffrey of New Lebanon, N.Y.

Kenneth was an avid sailor, fisherman and cat fancier spending every summer spending every summer at his family home in Wells Beach. The rest of the year he spent touring the country in their motor home.

He was a dedicated and loving husband and father.

A memorial celebration will be held this summer at their home in Wells Beach.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wells Oncology Center, 114 Sanford Rd., Wells, ME 04090.

Carl Neuendorffer

CONCORD, Mass. -- Carl Neuendorffer, 85, formerly of Wayland, passed away peacefully on New Year's Day at Rivercrest Nursing Home in Concord, Mass.

Born in North Tarrytown, NY (Sleepy Hollow) in 1921, Mr. Neuendorffer attended North Tarrytown schools, graduating from high school in 1939. He obtained a degree in mechanical engineering in 1942 from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. During World War II, Mr. Neuendorffer, as a Naval Lieutenant, supervised the operation and maintenance of radar equipment for a fleet of ships in the South Pacific.

Married to Mary Jane Bellis in 1943 before his war duties, he settled with his wife in Watertown, Mass. after the war. Mr. Neuendorffer and his wife moved to Wayland, Mass. in 1956, where they lived for many years. He worked in radar technology for Raytheon, in Watertown and Wayland, Mass., then in hydraulics for the Oilgear Company in Waltham, Mass. and for the last twenty years of his career, for Bay State Abrasives, a grinding wheel manufacturer in Westborough, Mass.

Mary Jane Neuendorffer, his wife of 54 years, passed away in 1997. As young parents, they owned and sailed a sailboat, spending summer weekends and vacations in Gloucester, Mass and sailing up to Maine and down around Cape Cod with their children, as time allowed. Throughout their years together, they enjoyed friendship and correspondence with many people around the world, particularly in Japan and Africa. Visits here and abroad with their friends and acquaintances were highlights in their lives.

For the last 5 years, Mr. Neuendorffer was a devoted companion to Jane Westover, of Concord, Mass., who passed away at the age of 93 in November, 2006. They were delighted with each other's company, reading books of mutual interest, going to concerts, walking in the woods and talking about the many events and interests they had experienced.

Mr. Neuendorffer was a lover of music, particularly jazz and swing, and played the cello. He also loved the outdoors, and the ocean. Since the early �70s, he and his family have taken a summer vacation at the same rented cottage in York Beach, rising every day to see the sun "pop" on the horizon, and watch the ocean birds gather and the lobstermen pull up their pots. Mr. Neuendorffer cared deeply about being a good neighbor to anyone he met, he was always ready to share a helpful suggestion, an interesting anecdote, a jazz tape, or just the right tool.

Mr. Neuendorffer is survived by his daughter, Peggy Newfield and granddaughter, Diana Timko, of Stamford Conn., his son Peter Neuendorffer of Boston Mass. and his sister, Ruth Neuendorffer, of Arlington, Va.

Service notice -- A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 3, at the Abundant Life Community Chapel, 80 Deaconess Road, Concord, Mass. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be sent to the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, 130 Prospect St., Cambridge, MA 02139, in memory of Carl Neuendorffer.

Barbara Holt

ALFRED -- Barbara Suzanne Holt, 56, succumbed to her battle with pancreatic cancer on Jan. 22, 2007, at home surrounded by her loving family. She dedicated her life to family and the betterment of York County through United Way. Barbara was also involved in many political activities and continued education.

Barbara devoted nearly two decades of volunteer work to the United Way of York County. She believed that each community member should participate in making improvements to the quality of life in that community. She continued to work tirelessly toward this goal despite being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Barbara received numerous awards for her dedicated and hands-on volunteer work. She was the first recipient of The Kitteredge Award in 1997 and most recently received the 6 Who Care award this past year.

Barbara began her own business, The Planning Alliance, consulting with nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions. She also dedicated herself for many years to local and national political campaigns and organizations including: the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts, Sen. George Mitchell's Federal Appointment Committee, Victory '92 Campaign, Wells Rotary Club, and her own campaign for state senate.

Barbara, a life-long learner and believer in continued education, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. She also received graduate certificates from the University of Maine, Nasson College, and Tufts University. She was acting Director/dean of Nasson College, Registrar at University of New England, and director at Franklin Pierce College. Recently, she was dean of Heartwood College of the Arts.

In November, Barbara was widowed by her husband of 34 years, Dr. William John Holt III.

She leaves behind a son, Asa Holt, a banker in Boston, and daughters Genevieve and Lydia Holt, whom are enrolled in college programs.

Barbara Holt was a dedicated wife, loving mother, and cherished by her family.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Alfred Parish Church on Saco Road in Alfred.

A reception was held in the Hobbs Room located next to the church following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara Holt's name may be made to the United Way of York County Endowment Fund, Box 727, 36 Water St., Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Annette Cole

WELLS "" Annette Cole, 76, of Royal Heights and Delray Beach, Fla., died peacefully on Jan. 20, 2007 in her home surrounded by her loving family Annette was born July 18, 1930 in Brooklyn, N.Y., a Daughter of Benjamin and Rae Furst Rackmill. She graduated from Boston University and worked for the Dedham Schools as an educator for 26 years. She was member of BNAIBRITH.

Annette enjoyed shopping, reading, and piano playing. She loved spending time with her family.

On April 14, 1951 Annette married Jason Cole. They celebrated over 55 years together seeing their dreams come to fruition. Jason passed away just two days after the death of his beloved Annette.

Annette was predeceased by her sister; Betty Polimer.

Annette is survived by her son David Cole of Chicago, Ill.; her Daughters, Rhonda Cole and Karen Ginchereau; and her special grandson Ray.

A funeral service was held on Jan. 26, at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells, with Rabbi Ellen Farber.

A private Interment will follow in Ocean View cemetery in Wells.
