Lillian Merry

OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Former resident Lillian E. Merry, 89, of Byron Hill Road in West Bath, died Saturday at Winship Green Nursing Center in Bath.

She was born in Dayton on July 13, 1912, a daughter of Byron and Maggie Buzzell Hill, was educated in local schools and graduated from Thornton Academy in 1930.

She married Raymond Hebert, who died in 1944. On April 20, 1963, she married W. Paul Merry.

Mrs. Merry worked at the New York Arsenal and the South Portland Shipyard during World War II and was the first female mail carrier in Biddeford, working there from 1942 until 1945. She was a Maine State Humane Agent for 25 years, a deputy sheriff in York County for eight years and a police matron in Saco for four years.

She lived in Old Orchard Beach prior to moving to Bowdoinham in 1977.

Mrs. Merry was a Past Master of the Saco Grange, a member of the Eastern Star of Saco, Maine Trail Riders and Good Sam of America camping group and past treasurer of the Bowdoinham Fire Dept.

Her hobbies included horses and animals of all kinds. She wrote a book titled "Tears of Heartbreak and Happiness," about animals she loved and protected.

She was a former member of Saco Methodist Church.

Her five brothers died previously.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years; a sister, Mary Jane Lake of Old Orchard Beach; and several nieces and nephews.

George Halacy

BIDDEFORD - George D. Halacy, 67, of Foss Street, died Friday at Riverridge in Kennebunk.

He was born Jan. 27, 1935 in Jersey City, N.J., a son of William and Rose Farrell Halacy, and was educated in Norwalk, Conn., schools.

On Nov. 24, 1955, he married Antoinette Huot at St. Joseph's Church in Norwalk.

Mr. Halacy was employed at Character Novelty Co. in Norwalk and also owned and operated Halacy's Deli there. He moved to Biddeford 16 years ago and owned and operated Halacy's Variety on Green Street.

Mr. Halacy was a member of St. Andre's Church, Biddeford Eagles Aerie 804 and Ross Center Senior Citizens.

A brother died previously.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years; two daughters, Linda Treadway and Robin Cote, both of Biddeford; four sisters, all of Connecticut; seven grandchildren, a great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Herman Ramsdell

OGUNQUIT - Herman C. Ramsdell, 92, resident of South Main Street died Thursday at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation.

He was born Dec. 3, 1908, in Portsmouth, N.H., a son of Albert and Abby Welch Ramsdell, and attended Ogunquit and Wells Schools.

He was employed for 35 years with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a planner and estimator, the last seven years were with the Groton, Conn. Navy Yard. After his retirement, he worked summers for the town of Ogunquit at the Footbridge and Perkins Cove parking lots.

He and his wife Louise wintered for 17 years in Florida.

Mr. Ramsdell is a life member of the Ogunquit Fire Co., having served for 76 years, and is a past member of the Ocean Lodge # 142 AF & AM in Wells.

He was predeceased by a son, Sheldon Ramsdell, and a daughter, Shirley Suglia.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Velma Louise (Traves) Ramsdell of Ogunquit; two sons, Donald A. Ramsdell of South Yarmouth, Mass and Glen C. Ramsdell of Wells; five grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.

Steven Zakrzewski

BIDDEFORD - Steven T. Zakrzewski, 92, of South Street and formerly of Fern Park, Fla., died Saturday at a local nursing home.

He was born Sept. 1, 1918 in Riverside, N.J., a son of Ignatius and Leokadya Grabinska Zakrzewski, attended schools there and graduated from Indiana Institute of Technology and later from Pennsylvania State University with a Master's degree in general engineering.

Mr. Zakrzewski served in the Navy for 25 years, retiring in 1961. After his retirement, he was an instructor of engineering at Pennsylvania State University.

His wife, Margaret Ada Griffin, died previously.

Surviving are a stepson, Richard Griffin of Kennebunk; two sisters, Helen Lyczak of Riverside and Sister Mary Fabine of Mt. Pocono, Pa.; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Arlyne Whitehouse

ACTON - Arlyne S. Whitehouse, 86, of Route 109, died Saturday in an area nursing home.

She was born Feb. 4, 1915, in Acton, the daughter of Roscoe and Mary Sanborn. She attended school in Acton, graduated from Sanford High School, Class of 1933 and then attended The Nasson Institute.

Mrs Whitehouse worked as a secretary for the State of Maine in the unemployment office, retiring after 32 years of service.

Fond of the outdoors and a serious animal lover, she enjoyed feeding the birds and foxes that visited in her yard. She had a knack for and enjoyed knitting and doing crochet.

Mrs. Whitehouse had been living with Judy Hurd for the last two years and was said to have a very funny sense of humor. She attended Acton Congregational Church.

Mrs, Whitehouse was predeceased by her husband, Burt A. Whitehouse, in 1977.

She is survived by a cousin, Judy Hurd, and her family of Acton.

Sarah Tavoularis

SACO - Sarah Tavoularis, 85, of Elm Street, died Friday at Evergreen Manor.

She was born in Saco April 28, 1916, the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Dubois Tavoularis, and attended Saco and Biddeford schools up to the 10th grade.

At one time she worked in a Biddeford shoe shop, and later in the Pepperell mills as a binder until 1981.

She was an avid reader, and is survived by several cousins.

Alfred Poirier

BIDDEFORD - Former resident Alfred "Ted" Poirier, 82, of Arundel Road in Gray, died Saturday at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Pawtucket, R.I. on April 2, 1918, a son of Calixte and Azalie Martin Poirier, and attended schools in Woonsocket, R.I.

Mr. Poirier was employed by S.D. Warren of Westbrook for 34 years, retiring in 1980.

He lived on Sebago Lake and family members say that he was very community-oriented, always helping his neighbors.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a Purple Heart recipient.

Mr. Poirier enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and building houses for and with his sons. He was a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in North Windham, where he was a collector at Sunday masses.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jeannette Lemieux Poirier of Gray; five sons, Michael and Gary, both of San Diego, Calif., Thomas of Gray, Mark of Cornville and Robert of West Minot; two sisters, Rose Weiss of Biddeford and Delia Fillion of Ocean Park; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Hubert Watson

SACO - Hubert Allen Watson, 84, of Louden Road, died Saturday at the Family Living Center on Hall Avenue.

He was born in Kennebunk on Sept. 26, 1916, the son of Willis and Florence Cook Watson, attended Kennebunk schools and graduated from Kennebunk High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in France as a medic.

Mr. Watson was a meat cutter for most of his life, working for the First National in Kennebunk and later for Bagley's Supermarket in Saco. After Bagley's closed, he worked for the Golden Rooster Restaurant, from which he retired in the 1980s.

He was a longtime resident of Saco, enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and golf and was a member of the Biddeford and Saco Country Club.

Survivors include his wife of more than 62 years, Lois Soper Watson; one daughter, Nancy Graffam of Saco; one brother, David of Colorado; one sister, Dorothy Pillsbury of Kennebunk; two grandchildren, Dena Girioux and Darcy Grondin, both of Dayton; and four great-grandchildren.

Helen Taylor

KENNEBUNK - Helen C. Taylor, 94, of Cat Mousam Road, died Sunday at Goodall Hospital in Sanford after a long illness.

Mrs. Taylor was born Oct. 15,1906 in Kennebunkport, a daughter of Fred E. and Mary Mullen Clough, and graduated from Kennebunkport High School in 1926.

She was a member of the Kennebunk Baptist Church, was active in the Rebecca's Club, the Pythians, and the Fifty-plus Club, enjoyed going to the senior meal site in West Kennebunk, and always put her family first throughout her life.

Her husband, William M. Taylor, died in 1990.

Survivors include a son, Fredrick Thompson of Lisbon; two daughters, Rosalie Culler of Robesonia, Pa. and Lois Merrill of Kennebunk; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Albert Taliento

BIDDEFORD - Former resident Albert J. Taliento, 78 of Scarborough Terrace in Scarborough, died Friday.

He was born March 11, 1922 in Portland, a son of Luigi and Michelina Taliento, and attended Portland schools.

He had been a food broker for Prince Macaroni for 38 years.

Mr. Taliento was a member of the Italian Heritage Club, Portland Boys and Girls clubs, Knights of Columbus, Biddeford-Saco Ahepa and Biddeford Eagles.

He was a communicant at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Portland.

Among his hobbies were politics, sports and horse racing.

A son, Bruce A., died in 1999.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Stella E. Throumoulos Taliento of Scarborough; two sons, Louis J. of Portland and Robert L. of Nashua, N.H.; one daughter, Janice M. Bancroft of Raymond; three brothers, Neil, Ralph and Mike, all of Portland; three sisters, Theresa Lombardo, Margaret Bailey and Carmella Bellino, all of Portland; and eight grandchildren

Robert Webber

SACO - Robert H. Webber, 74, of Nye Street, died Saturday at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born Jan. 13, 1926 in Saco, a son of Carl E. and Mabel Parker Webber, and was educated in Saco.

He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in January 1944 and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, including Okinawa. He was wounded in action on June 13, 1945 and was a Purple Heart recipient. He returned home after his discharge in 1946, and on Oct. 4, 1947 he married Gloriane Dionne in Saco.

He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 32 years, retiring in 1983.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf and cribbage and loved to attend his grandchildren's sporting events.

Mr. Webber was a member of Most Holy Trinity Church.

A daughter, Adria, died in 1983.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years; four daughters, Sally Trudeau of Arundel, Jane Brennick and Janice Delage, both of Saco, and Shirley Lodge of Lyman; a son, Robert H. II of Scarborough; a brother, Roger M. of Saco; 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
