Francois Maillette

OCEAN PARK - Francois J. Maillette, 75, of Manor Street, died Saturday at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born in Shawinigan, Quebec, Canada, a son of Albert and Amabelise Aubray Maillette, and was educated in Quebec schools.

On Sept. 28, 1946, he married Anita Quessy in Shawinigan.

Mr. Maillette worked for Volk Packaging for 18 years as a machine operator, retiring in 1988.

He enjoyed singing in chorale groups, gardening and traveling to Europe. He was also active in charitable organizations, helping the poor. He served as president of Le Club Richelieu of Biddeford-Saco-Old Orchard Beach, was a 4th degree member of the Biddeford Knights of Columbus and was past president of St. Jean Baptiste de Bienfaisance and a member of St. Joseph's Church and its choir.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years; a son, Michel of South El Monte, Calif.; three daughters, Nicole (Mrs. Ronnie) Collard and Jocelyne (Mrs. Carl) Parisien, both of Saco, and Louise; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Renald Gagnon

BIDDEFORD - Renald Gagnon, 72, of Cutts Street, died Sunday at his home.

He was born Sept. 22, 1928 in Biddeford, a son of Arthur and Rose Dumont Gagnon, and was educated in Biddeford schools.

On Aug. 16, 1952, he married Theresa L. LeProhon at St. Mary's Church.

Mr. Gagnon served 13 years with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

He worked for Maremont Corp. and Mammoth Mart in Scarborough for a few years. Mr. Gagnon worked for over 15 years with the York County and Cumberland County Sheriff's Departments, retiring in 1985 due to ill health.

During the summer months he operated Rose's Restaurant in Saco, The Belvedere Hotel Snack Bar in Old Orchard Beach, Pirates Patio at the Carolina Motel in Old Orchard Beach, and Jo Ara's in Biddeford.

Mr. Gagnon was a life member and twice past commander of the DAV, a member of the York County Veterans Alliance, and a life member of the VFW. He was a member of the Biddeford Eagles, AMVETS, and former director of Civil Emergency Preparedness for the city of Biddeford.

He enjoyed playing cards and darts.

His son, Mark, died in 1963.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years; three sons, Michael R. E. of Biddeford, Robert L. of Florida and Rene of New York; two brothers, Fernand of Sarasota, Fla. and Roger of Biddeford; three sisters, Marie Bineau and Antoinette, both of Biddeford, and Doris Stackpole of Arundel; two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Arthur Mee

ACTON - Former resident Arthur R. Mee, 82, of Somersworth, N.H., died Sunday at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H.

He was born in Acton on Aug. 26, 1918, the son of Horace and Marcia Hurd Mee, attended the one-room Lincoln School in Acton, graduated from Sanford High School in 1938, attended Boston University and the Spartan School of Aeronautics of Tulsa, Okla., and graduated from flight school in Denver, Colo.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. As a Navy pilot, he was a submarine hunter. He remained active in the Naval Reserves for many years after discharge from active duty. He received the American Area Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Prior to his retirement, he was a flight engineer and pilot for the former Northeast Airline, which was Delta Airline at the time he retired.

Arthur was a member of the Mousam Lake Grange No. 447 and the Odd Fellows Lodge of Milton Mills, N.H.

Four brothers, Horace of Florida, Victor of Acton, Richard of Pennsylvania and John of Rochester, died previously.

Surviving are his wife of more than 49 years, Emily Columbus Mee of Somersworth; a daughter, Donna (Mrs. Robert) Marble of Hampton; two brothers, George of Acton and Charlie of Wassaie, N.Y.; three sisters, Olive Mee Treadwell of Acton, Margie Smithers of Gilmanton and Nancy Webster of Derry, N.H.; three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Bruce Mayberry Jr.

HOLLIS - Bruce C. Mayberry Jr., 25, of Chadbourne Ridge Road, died Saturday in Buxton.

He was born in Portland on Jan. 24, 1975, the son of Bruce Sr. and Tammy Mains Mayberry, and graduated from Bonny Eagle High School in 1993 and the Westbrook Vocational School.

After graduation he entered the Army Reserves.

He had been a Hollis resident for the past year and was employed by Dearborn Construction of Buxton.

He was a member of the Stevens Avenue Engineering Battalion, where he rose to the rank of sergeant. He had received various commendations which included being a sharp shooter.

He enjoyed the outdoors, which included fishing, hunting, skiing and four-wheeling, and had been involved with the Pathfinders. He will be remembered for helping others, family members say.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Stevens Mayberry of Hollis; a daughter, Brianna C. of Limington; a stepdaughter, Ashley E. Stevens of Hollis; his parents, Bruce Sr. and Sally Mayberry of Standish and Michael and Tammy Fardon of Buxton; his grandparents, Eddie and Marion Mains of Buxton, Norman Mayberry of Limington and Roger and Beryl Brooks of Standish; a brother, Nicholas Lang of Limington; and three sisters, Denise Jellison of Hollis, Jaime Lang of Limington and Ashley Webber of Steep Falls.

Lloyd Jewett

KENNEBUNK - Lloyd G. Jewett, 71, of Ross Road, died Friday at his home.

He was born in South Portland on June 2, 1930, a son of Herbert and Marian P. Ellis Jewett, and attended schools there.

He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Jewett was employed by Central Maine Power as a lineman for several years and worked his way up to plant operator for more then 25 years, retiring in 1982.

Mr. Jewett was a member of the York Lodge No. 22 and Royal Arch Chapter and Commandry in West Kennebunk, the Scottish Rite, Valley of Portland, Kora Temple Shrine in Lewiston, the Kora Renegades, Put Stevens Court No. 107 Jesters in Portland and the York Country Shrine Club, where he was a director for several years.

He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

His wife, Margaret Foley Jewett, a son, Mark, and his brother, Howard, all died previously.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas E. of Suffolk, Va., Peter J. of West Kennebunk and William K. of Arundel; two daughters, Mary (Mrs. Robert) Emmons of Kennebunk and Katie (Mrs. William) Randall of Saco; and 11 grandchildren.

Grace McKenney

SACO - Grace G. Littlefield McKenney, 72, of Spring Road died Saturday at Maine Medical Center, Portland.

She was born in Portland, a daughter of Samuel J. and Eunice C. Smith Coney and attended Portland schools.

She was a member of the Landing Chapel in Kennebunkport.

She enjoyed cooking, camping and taking drives. As a nature enthusiast, she enjoyed flowers and other various plants.

She was pre-deceased by her first husband and, Earl R. Littlefield in 1984 and her second husband, Dana B. McKenney in 1989. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Littlefield of Portland and Pamela Hopkins of Old Orchard Beach; a sister, Shirley Crockett of Scarborough, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Eugene McNabb

BIDDEFORD - Former resident Eugene D. McNabb, 78, of Whistler Landing in Scarborough, died Thursday at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness, Fla. He had been a winter resident of Beverly Hills, Fla. since 1990.

He was born in Biddeford April 10, 1922, a son of John and Nora Sullivan McNabb. A graduate of Maine Maritime Academy, he served in the U.S. Navy as an officer during World War II. He attended Bowdoin College, the University of Maine and Columbia University in New York, where he received his master's degree in education.

Mr. McNabb was a language teacher and a headmaster for various private schools for 30 years, until 1978. He later joined the H.C. Copeland Companies in Armonk, N.Y. as an account executive, retiring in 1988.

He was a lifelong golf enthusiast and in 1948 won the New England Inter-collegiate championship in golf, the only undergraduate in Maine to receive this honor, and his record still stands today.

Since 1992 he has served as the Maine state coordinator for "Hook a Kid On Golf" and received an award as state coordinator of the year. In 1996 he introduced the "Hook a Kid On Golf" to the Brentwood Golf Course in Beverly Hills. From 1994 to 1997 Mr. McNabb was president of the Maine State Golf Hall of Fame and was himself inducted into the Hall of Fame later.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Beverly Hills.

His son, Gene McNabb Jr., died previously.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Milda Dandeneau McNabb of Scarborough; a son, James S. of San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Eileen of St. Louis, Mo. and Mary Stillson of Milford, Mass.; a brother, Francis of Saco; three stepsons, David Tetta of Seattle, Wash., Paul Tetta of Malden, Mass. and Richard Tetta of Astoria, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Patti Tetta of Minneapolis, Minn.; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Rhea Sanborn

KENNEBUNK - Rhea Anita Dube Sanborn, 89, died Friday at the Kennebunk Nursing Home.

She was born May 4, 1911 in South Berwick, the daughter of Cyrus and Alphonsine Dube, attended Sanford schools and graduated from Sanford High School, where she played basketball.

She grew up in Sanford, where her father owned a market.

She attended beautician school, then opened a beauty salon in Biddeford on the corner of Main and Franklin streets. She established a strong business and was active in social activities. She retired when she married C. Herbert Hanson in 1940. She started another beauty salon in 1956, retaining many of her customers from the Biddeford shop. She continued as a hairdresser most of her life and participated in several hairdresser and beautician groups until her retirement in 1975.

Her hobby was painting, particularly oil painting. She took painting lessons throughout her life. She was an avid gardener and also refinished furniture.

Her first husband died Jan. 15, 1972. She married Charles S. Towle Sr. in January 1975. He died Nov. 22, 1980. She married Philip O. Sanborn in August 1985. He died Sept. 23, 1996.

Throughout her married life, with three husbands and four homes, she only lived in the neighborhood bordered by North Street, Goodale Avenue and Foley Avenue.

She was a member of the United Baptist Church of Saco.

She leaves a son, Robert A. Hanson of Peterborough, N.H.; two grandchildren, Annelies C. Hanson and Erica A. Hanson, both of Peterborough; two stepdaughters, Helen of Saco and Phyllis Sanborn White of Fort Myers, Fla.; two stepgrandchildren, Karen Towle Stackpole of Saco and Kelly Towle of Jacksonville, Fla.; two nieces and a nephew.

Steve Notis

SACO - Steve A. Notis, 76, of Oceanside Drive, died Saturday at his home.

He was born in Saco on Jan. 7, 1924, a son of Andrew and Polixeni Gjini Notis, and graduated from Thornton Academy in 1942, where he had been class president for four years.

He joined the U.S. Army and played saxophone in the army band and several USO clubs.

Following his discharge, he married Irene Nanos in 1949 and later graduated from the University of Maine in Orono.

Mr. Notis was a businessman, developer and real estate broker. He was proprietor of Nanos Variety in South Portland for several years in the 1950s. He retired as proprietor of Notis Realty in Old Orchard Beach in 1989.

He was an avid sports enthusiast, having played baseball at Thornton Academy and the University of Maine. He coached baseball and was assistant basketball coach at Cheverus High School. He enjoyed working with youth and was a track and cross country coach at Biddeford High School.

Later in life he took up oil painting as a hobby. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years; a son, Steven M. of Cape Elizabeth; a daughter, Cynthia A. Claffey of Wellington, Fla.; a brother, John A. of Saco; a sister, Sue Lano of Saco; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Helen Hall

BERWICK - Longtime resident Helen W. Hall, 89, of Boynton Beach, Fla., died Thursday at the Boynton Beach Health Care Facility.

She was born June 26, 1913 in Wells, a daughter of Frank S. and Nellie M. Wakely Bedell, and graduated from North Berwick High School in 1931 and Gorham Normal School in 1933.

In 1946, she married Walter C. Hall Jr. in Berwick.

Mrs. Hall taught school for eight years in North Berwick and four years in Westbrook. She was the secretary and on the board of directors of W.C. Hall & Co. from 1954 to 1967.

She was a deaconess of First Parish Church in Somersworth, N.H. from 1968 to 1971 and held offices in several church groups. She had been a member of First Baptist Church of West Palm Beach, Fla.

A brother, Harlon E. Bedell, died previously.

Surviving are her husband of 56 years; a daughter, Mary Anne (Mrs. Richard) Kelly of Prescott, Ariz.; a brother, Clyde N. Bedell of Colchester, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.
