Wayne Arey

OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Wayne Arey, 75, of Castine Drive, died Tuesday at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born in Winter Harbor on May 20, 1926, a son of Herbert B. and Ethel Gerrish Arey, and was educated in Westbrook schools.

Mr. Arey served with the U.S. Navy as an electrician during World War II. In 1945, he was in Tokyo Bay aboard the USS Idaho when Japan signed the peace treaty, ending the war in the Pacific.

On Sept. 2, 1949, he married June Dame in Standish.

Mr. Arey was a papermaker for the S.D. Warren Company for 38 years, retiring in 1984. After his retirement, he stayed active as a private consultant for various paper companies.

He enjoyed his work in the paper industry and was an avid gardener.

Two brothers died previously, Leon in 1983 and Stanley last year.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years; a daughter, Cheryl of Old Orchard Beach; two sisters, Dorothy Drew of Old Orchard Beach and Louise Stevens of South Portland; and several nieces and nephews.

Honora Martinez

WELLS - Honora Ann "Hunny" Martinez, 60, of Post Road, died Monday at her home.

She was born April 11, 1941 in Paterson, N.J., a daughter of Alfred E. and Norma Kearns Dudak.

Mrs. Martinez was a wife and mother, had helped her husband operate The Ocean Overlook Inn since 1976 and recently assisted in the operation of Maximilian's/Haddock Jack's Restaurant on the property.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.

Survivors include her husband, Manuel; two sons, Vincent R. and Gregg, both of Wells; a daughter, Jennifer Madore of Arundel; five grandchildren and her stepfather, Richard Pavosev of Toms River, N.J.

Frederick Bridges

BIDDEFORD - Frederick Gilman Bridges, 74, of Foss Street, died Monday at the Southern Maine Medical center after a long illness.

He was born Jan. 8, 1927, in Dayton, the son of Arthur (Sr.) and Glacie Quint Bridges and attended Biddeford and Dayton schools.

Mr. Bridges served in the United States Army.

Following his military service, Mr. Bridges worked for Landry's Dairy, Maine Manpower and later Rainbow Candles. In the mid 1970's, he retired due to ill health.

He enjoyed country-western music, the company of his family, and his grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Glen Bridges in 1964, and a granddaughter, Christina Marie Bridges in 1985.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Agnes Jordan Bridges of Biddeford; two sons, Kevin Bridges and Angus Bridges of Biddeford; one daughter, Eldena Boynton of Biddeford; one brother, Arthur Bridges of Standish; two sisters, Lucy Leonard of Arizona, and Lillian Flanders of Biddeford; and four grandchildren.

Dorila Cote

WELLS - Dorila A. Cote, 93, of Proulx Avenue, died Sunday at the Newton Center in Sanford.

She was born in Roxton Fall, Quebec, Canada on Aug. 27, 1907, a daughter of George and Anna Larose Gagne, and was educated in Nashua, N.H.

Mrs. Cote was a housewife and homemaker as well as a spinner at the former Goodall-Sanford textile mills until they closed in 1954. She later worked at Tennford Weaving and retired from there.

She was an active member of St. Mary's Church, where she was a member of the sodality. She was in charge of the white elephant table at the annual church fair.

Prior to moving to Wells in 1966, Mrs. Cote was a communicant of Holy Family Church in Sanford, where she was a member of the Daughters of Isabella.

She enjoyed doing cross stitch squares and made quilts with them. She enjoyed cooking and often held Thanksgiving dinner with all of her family members at her home.

Her husband, Paul A. Cote, died in 1984, a son, Roland, died in 1926 and another son, Raoul, died last July.

Survivors include a brother, Paul Gagne of Colebrook, N.H.; a sister, Rita Cantin of Sanford; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews

Bernice Engel

OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Longtime summer resident Bernice Fingold Engel, 101, of Haverhill, Mass., died Monday at Hale Hospital in Haverhill.

She was born in Haverhill on Sept. 5, 1899, a daughter of Benjamin and Ida Silverman Fingold.

Her mother at one time owned and operated the Old Seashore Hotel in Old Orchard Beach.

She was a longtime member of Temple Emanu-El and belonged to the temple's sisterhood and to Hadassah. She was also active at the Jewish Home for the Aged in Boston.

Her husband, Arthur Engel, died previously.

Surviving are two daughters, Marilyn Berlin of Haverhill and Lorraine (Mrs. Edward) Levinson of Montreal, Quebec, Canada; a sister, Ruth (Mrs. Daniel) Lewis of Haverhill; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Margaret Bickelhaupt

KENNEBUNK - Margaret Shumbat "Migs" Bickelhaupt, 87, of Cat Mousam Road, died Monday at her home.

She was born Nov. 26, 1912 in Easton, Pa., a daughter of Anthony and Julia Arcury Shumbat, and graduated from Easton High School, class of 1930.

As a young woman, she was a violinist with the Easton Symphony.

She was employed by the Pennsylvania Employment Service for 25 years.

Mrs. Bickelhaupt was known as a superb cook and gardener, enjoyed needlework and was a 55-year member of the bridge club in Easton. She moved to Maine in 1996.

Her first husband, Francis Speed Coleman, died in 1950 and her second husband, Chester A. Bickelhaupt, to whom she was married to for 37 years, died in 1998. Three sisters, Mary Gilds, Frances Stauffer and Lillian Moser, have also died.

Survivors include two daughters, Julia Coleman of Saco and Susan Martin of Acton, Mass.; two stepdaughters, Constance Ebersole and Valerie Mensinger, both of Allentown, Pa.; two sisters, Laura Walsh of Easton and Ann McDermott of Allentown; four grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Helen Sherry

OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Former resident Helen Sherry, 100, died Saturday at Pine Point Nursing Home in Scarborough.

She was born in Lewiston on Nov. 5, 1901, the daughter of Michael and Ellen Coolican Moore, and attended Wallace Grammar School.

Mrs. Sherry was a homemaker most of her life.

Her husband, Timothy L. Sherry, died in 1981.

Surviving are three daughters, Barbara Beaudoin and Gretchen Gosselin, both of Old Orchard Beach, and Celeste Houle of Cumberland, R.I.; nine grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Olivia Daicy

LIMINGTON - Olivia I. Daicy, 56, of Route 25, died Monday at her home.

She was born in Bridgton, a daughter of Merle and Jessie Kilborn Durrell, attended schools there and graduated from Bridgton High School in 1963.

She attended Pierre's School of Cosmetology in Portland and owned and operated Olivia's Cut and Curl Beauty Salon at her home in South Portland for many years. Later, she moved to Limington and operated another beauty salon by the same name until 1994. She also worked at Goodwill Industries for eight years, from the late 1980s into the mid-1990s, and was a certified nurse's assistant for a few years.

Relatives say Mrs. Daicy loved and enjoyed her family more than anything. Her interests included ceramics and playing cards.

Surviving are her husband, Stanley K. Daicy; three sons, William M. Ingraham of Salisbury, N.C. and Darrin C. Ingraham and Steven E. Ingraham, both of Limington; a daughter, Sharion L. Morton of Limington; two stepsons, Chris Fitzgerald of Westbrook and Scott Fitzgerald of Humble, Texas; three stepdaughters, Kelly Hasselbach of Norfolk, Va., Shirlene Goodheart of Hollis and Elaine Gervais of Gorham; and 15 grandchildren.

Gabriel Phillips

SANFORD - Gabriel Hosea Phillips, infant son of Paula R. Bisson and Franklin D. Phillips Jr. of Ashmont Street, died June 20 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born June 19, 2001.

Grandparents Harvey G. and Rita R. Bisson died previously.

Surviving besides his parents are his grandparents, Franklin D. Sr. and Elisabeth Phillips; great-grandmother Alice M. Demers; four uncles, six aunts and 26 cousins.

Grace McKenney

SACO - Grace G. Littlefield McKenney, 72, of Spring Road died Saturday at Maine Medical Center, Portland.

She was born in Portland, a daughter of Samuel J. and Eunice C. Smith Coney and attended Portland schools.

She was a member of the Landing Chapel in Kennebunkport.

She enjoyed cooking, camping and taking drives. As a nature enthusiast, she enjoyed flowers and other various plants.

She was pre-deceased by her first husband and, Earl R. Littlefield in 1984 and her second husband, Dana B. McKenney in 1989.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Littlefield of Portland and Pamela Hopkins of Old Orchard Beach; a son, Earl C. Littlefield of Biddeford; a sister, Shirley Crockett of Scarborough, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Rosalie Landry

KENNEBUNK - Former resident Rosalie Ann Landry, 65, of Lady Lake, Fla., died Sunday.

She was born in Kennebunk and moved to Lady Lake from Dover, N.H. in 1990.

Mrs. Landry was a retired purchasing agent for civil service at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

She was a member of the Dutch Elm Ladies Golf Association at Dutch Elm Golf Course in Arundel.

Surviving are her husband, Norman Landry; two sons, Stephen of Rochester, N.H. and David of Oak Creek, Colo.; a daughter, Catherine of Arundel; and two grandchildren.

Donald Goodwin

ALFRED - Former resident Rev. Dr. Donald Watson Goodwin, 81, of Uplands in Pleasant Hill, Tenn., died Monday.

He was born in Passaic, N.J. on Dec. 3, 1918, the son of Leslie Hall and Beulah Bennett Goodwin, graduated from the University of Maine and Bangor Theological Seminary and received a Ph.D. in Old Testament and Semitics from Brown University in 1965.

He was a resident of Alfred from 1923 until 1955 and served as a mechanic in the Army and Air Force during World War II.

Dr. Goodwin was ordained a minister in the United Church of Christ in 1959. He served as the pastor of the United Church in Oak Ridge, Tenn., from 1966 until his retirement in 1984.

During his retirement, he continued his Old Testament studies, learned to play the violin and maintained a lifelong interest in current events.

He is survived by his wife, Roberta Lewis Goodwin; and two sons, Matthew of Springfield, Ore. and Andrew of Clinton, Wash.
