Kathleen Dunnells

SANFORD - Kathleen H. Dunnells, 102, died Tuesday at Sanford Health Care.

She was born in Ross Corner, Nova Scotia, Canada on Sept. 10, 1899, the youngest of 11 children of John and Alice Hatchard Hiltz.

She moved to Maine as a teen-ager and at age 17 to Sanford, where she had lived for 85 years.

Mrs. Dunnells worked for the shoe factory in Springvale when she was younger. Family members say she was devoted to her family as well as extended family and friends.

She enjoyed gardening, nature and sewing.

Her husband, Raymond E. Dunnells, died in 1952.

Survivors include a daughter, Marjorie D. Chadbourne of Sanford; two grandchildren, Jane C. Kirton of Sanford and James R. Chadbourne of Wells; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Rose Holleran

BUXTON - Rose M. Holleran, 90, of Middle Camp Road, died Tuesday at Poplar Ridge in Falmouth.

She was born in Berlin, N. H. on Nov. 3, 1910, a daughter of Tilly and Edith Kierstead Mercer, and attended school in New Brunswick.

She moved back to Berlin in her early 20s and lived there until 1997.

Mrs. Holleran worked at Gorham Mills for several years and later was a bookkeeper for a dry cleaner in Berlin until her retirement.

Her first husband, George Harris, her second husband, Edward Holleran, and a son, Albert Harris, all died previously.

Surviving are two granddaughters, Sherrie Duchaine of Standish and Jill LeConte of Buxton; a grandson, Timothy Harris of Falmouth; and six great-grandchildren.

Donald Anderson

HOLLIS - Donald B. Anderson, 55, of New Road, died Wednesday at his home after a brief illness with melanoma cancer.

He was born in Fort Lewis, Wash., the son of Robert and Charlotte Meserve Anderson, and was raised in Dayton on a dairy farm along the Saco River. He attended Dayton schools and graduated from Thornton Academy in 1963.

He and his family have been residents of Hollis since 1968.

Mr. Anderson was employed by Central Maine Power for 30 years, starting in the river crew and retiring as a hydro maintenance supervisor. After retiring from CMP, he worked for Florida Power and Light for a year. Family members say he knew the Saco River well, its twists and turns and all of its many hydroelectric dams, for he grew up on the river and worked around it, season after season, his entire life.

He was a member and past president of the Hollis Snowmobile Club, a former member of the National Guards and South Hollis Fire Department, and was a Boy Scout committee member and volunteer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and vegetable gardening with his family, and he raised pumpkins for many local nurseries.

Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Glendine Gooding Anderson; two sons, Devin of Readfield and Dwight of Dayton; his mother of Dayton; one brother, Glen of Saco; three sisters, Sharon Leblanc of Waterville, Carol Swan of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Judith Martin of Hollis; and three grandchildren, Courtney, Ashley and Taylor, all of Readfield.

Sr. Irene Deschambeault

BIDDEFORD - Sister Irene Deschambeault, 90, formerly known as Sister Irene Marie, died Tuesday at Southern Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Biddeford on Jan. 14, 1910, a daughter of Frederic Deschambeault and Camille Giguere, the youngest in a family of 10, and attended St. Joseph School in Biddeford, which was staffed by the Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, also known as the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec.

On Aug. 25, 1926, she made her entrance into the Novitiate of the Good Shepherd Sisters. After her profession of vows, she prepared herself for a teaching career which covered a span of 40 successful years in the following schools: St. Anne, Mt. Carmel, St. Theresa in Massachusetts and St. Joseph's in Biddeford.

After retiring from teaching, she served her community as a receptionist, bookkeeper, sacristan and driver. In 1987, for health reasons, she was transferred to the infirmary of St. Joseph's Convent.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Phyllis Deschambeault of Saco, and several nieces and nephews.

Earnest L. Beresh

62, of Warwick, Mass., died Saturday at his home. He was born in Tallmadge, Ohio, the son of Louie and Lenore Beresh, received a B.S. in education from Kent State University in 1962 and completed graduate work in speech and education at Northwestern University and the University of Massachusetts. Mr. Beresh had been Executive Director of Rural Housing Improvement, Inc. (RHI) in Winchendon, Mass. since December 1977. He was nationally known as a leader in rural issues, serving as a director and officer of many state and national organizations dealing with housing, environmental and community development issues. He served as a director and past president of the Housing Assistance Council of Washington, D.C.; director and past vice president of Rural Community Assistance Program, Inc. of Leesburg, Va.; director and past president of the Massachusetts Non-Profit Housing Association; director and past president of the North Central Massachusetts Community Reinvestment Act Coalition; and past chairman of the Massachusetts Housing Finance Agency Single Family Advisory Board. He also served as a director and executive committee member of the Rural Coalition, National Rural Housing Coalition and the Massachusetts Rural Development Committee. He was a recipient of the Gene McMurtry Award, which honors outstanding work in rural affairs in Massachusetts. He began working at RHI in 1976 as Director of Construction Services. Prior to that he taught English and speech in Massachusetts, Florida and Illinois. He received numerous awards during his teaching career, including National Debate Coach of the Year in 1963, several local and state Speech Teacher of the Year awards and the Outstanding Young Educator award. He also served as president of the Blackstone-Millville, Mass. Teachers Association for several years. Mr. Beresh was outspoken in his efforts to bring equity to rural areas in housing, environmental and community development programs. His advocacy in founding the local Community Reinvestment Act Coalition brought together government officials, grassroots community leaders and the financial community for the first time and was recognized as a national model for such coalitions. Mr. Beresh was an avid reader and an accomplished fisherman. He is survived by his father of Tallmadge, Ohio; three brothers, Richard, Andy and Denny. and two sisters, Jan Doepker and Roseline, all of the Tallmadge area; and his friend, Audrey Greenwald. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at the Fletcher-Hebert Funeral Home, 70 Pleasant St., Winchendon, Mass. at 11 a.m. Friday, followed by a reception at the Old Travelers Restaurant, Front Street, Winchendon. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Rural Housing Improvement, Inc., 218 Central St., Winchendon, MA 01475.

Roberta Forrester

SANFORD - Roberta M. Forrester, 70, of Jackson Street, died Tuesday at her home.

She was born in Providence, R.I. on July 8, 1930, a daughter of Michael and Emily Rocha Marchetti, and was educated at the Thorndike School in East Cambridge, Mass.

Mrs. Forrester worked at Sprague Electric Co. (now Vishay Sprague) for 17 years. She retired in 1986 due to ill health. She later worked at Courtney Cleaners from 1997 through 1998.

Family members say she enjoyed spending time with her grandson, Jason, with whom she lived, and was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed life to its fullest. All the neighborhood kids called her "Grandma." She enjoyed cooking, dancing, and her dog, Mariah. This past Thanksgiving, she cooked a 25-pound turkey and fed 13 people, four of whom were Sanford High School football players.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the V.F.W. Auxiliary and a life member of the Amvets Auxiliary.

Her husband, Daniel P. Forrester, died in 1994.

Survivors include a son, Frederick R. Trowbridge of Santa Maria, Calif.; two daughters, Marge Trowbridge of Sanford and Diane Slater-Beard of Juneau, Alaska; a brother, Raymond Marchetti of Davenport, Fla.; two sisters, Margaret Capaldi of Cranston, R.I. and Edna Baughman-Sargent of Rockwell, Texas; six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Dorothy Furber

BUXTON - Dorothy S. Furber, 86, died Dec. 4 at the Gorham House health care facility.

She was born in Saco, the daughter of Harry and Bertha Smith Furber, attended and graduated from Thornton Academy and later graduated from Northfield (Mass.) Mount Herman School.

She was the treasurer of her father's business, Saco Manufacturing, for many years.

While in Saco and Buxton, she was active in many different organizations and church. She and her mother played piano and organ duets at many recitals.

Surviving are several cousins, including Martha S. Baldwin of Norwich, Conn.

Sandra Johnson

SANFORD - Former resident Sandra Johnson, of Arlington, Va. and Palm Beach, Fla., died Tuesday.

She was the daughter of Norman S. and Geneva Hall and a graduate of Sanford High School, Lasalle Junior College and Mount Vernon College.

After working in the White House during the Nixon Administration, she became an interior designer in the Washington, D.C. area.

She was active in many charitable organizations, including the Cancer Fund, Washington Homes and the American Red Cross.

Surviving are her husband, Theodore M. Johnson; her mother of Sanford; three sisters, Jean Clarke and Gayle Tirrell, both of Sanford, and Norma Wakely of Medfield, Mass. and Moody Beach; and several nieces and nephews.

Fedora Roy

SACO - Former resident Fedora M. Roy, 100, of Port Orange, Fla., died Wednesday at a health care facility there.

She was born in Biddeford on Aug. 4, 1900, a daughter of Pierre and Victoria Lauzon Mondor, and attended Biddeford schools.

She was employed by Pepperell Manufacturing in Biddeford.

Mrs. Roy was a former communicant of Notre Dame de Lourdes Church in Saco and a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Church in Port Orange.

Her husband, George Roy, died in 1958 and a son, Robert, died in 1997.

Survivors include two sons, Roger P. and Paul R., both of Saco; two daughters, Doris B. Ingham of Pembroke, Mass. and Lorraine T. Durham of Port Orange, with whom she lived; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Walter James "Jim"Curtis

32, of Western Avenue in Winthrop, died unexpectedly Tuesday as the result of a car accident. He was born Nov. 28, 1967 in Augusta, the son of Walter and Anna Snell Curtis, and attended Penobscot Valley High School, class of 1986. He was a longtime carpenter with the Windy Hollow Construction Co. of Fayette. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors and especially time spent with his children. He is survived by a daughter, Skylar, and a son, Walter James III, both of Kents Hill; his parents of Fayette; two sisters, Wendy Pierce of Bowdoinham and Rebecca Caramihalis of Sanford; his grandmother, Julie of Gardiner; and nieces, nephews and many cousins. A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Kincer Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant St., Richmond, Pastor Margaret Queior of the Dresden-Richmond Methodist Church officiating. memorial donations may be made to his children's trust fund, c/o Walter Curtis, RR #3, Box 3600, Kents Hill 04349.

Cindy Grant

OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Cindy E. Grant, 44, of Smith Avenue, died unexpectedly Tuesday at her home.

She was born Dec. 9, 1955 in Portland, a daughter of George W. and Florence L. Butterfield Rice, and attended Portland schools.

She enjoyed going for long rides in the country.

Her husband, Joseph M. Grant Jr., died previously.

Surviving are two sons, Jason M. of Biddeford and Joseph M. of South Portland; a daughter, Danielle M. of South Portland; her father of Scarborough; two sisters, Donna Hersey of Scarborough and Pamela Dalphonse of Buxton; two brothers, John A. and Michael Rice, both of Portland; and four grandchildren.

Daniel Hanson

WATERBORO - Daniel W. Hanson, 52, died Tuesday at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford following a yearlong battle with cancer.

He was born in Sanford on Nov. 30, 1949, the son of William and Norma Roberts Hanson, and was a 1968 graduate of Sanford High School.

Danny worked at Limerick Shoe during high school, and picked thousands of bushels of apples. He also was a truck driver for the former Sprague Electric, Co-Hen Egg Farm, and most recently for Getchell Bros. in Sanford, delivering ice for the past five years. During his working career, he did plowing and wood cutting.

Danny was an avid hunter, specifically for deer, bird and rabbit. One of his favorite trips to take was traveling to Pennsylvania to deer hunt. He also enjoyed riding around looking for tracks. He enjoyed lottery tickets, horseshoes, camping, three-wheeling, lobstering, Nascar racing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and collecting sports cards. Mr. Hanson was affectionately known as "The Bud Man," and was a member of the local "coffee clubs" in Waterboro. Family members say he will be remembered for his great sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife, Helen M. Turner Hanson; his son, Kevin W. of Alfred; a daughter, Kelly (Mrs. Adam) Pearson of Lyman; two grandchildren; his father; a brother, William Jr. of North Waterboro; a sister, Rachel Roux of Alfred; and many nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Rawlinson

KENNEBUNK - Elizabeth W. Rawlinson, 91, of Acorn Circle, died Tuesday at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

She was born Jan. 6, 1910 in Lowell, Mass., a daughter of Royal P. and Pearl S. Sayles White, and graduated from Rogers Hall School of Lowell and Boston University College of Practical Arts & Letters.

Mrs. Rawlinson was a direct descendant of Mayflower passenger Resolved White.

She lived in Whitinsville, Mass. for many years, was a member of the Village Congregational Church of Whitinsville and the Whitinsville Women's Club, and served on the board of directors at Whitinsville Hospital.

She moved with her husband to Columbus, Ga. in 1968, and they moved to Kennebunk in 1985 after vacationing for many summers at Fortunes Rocks.

Mrs. Rawlinson was a member of Christ Church.

Her husband, Richard W. Rawlinson, died in 1999.

Survivors include two daughters, Deborah (Mrs. Allan) Carlson of Fortunes Rocks and Gretchen R. Bruce of York; one sister, Ruth (Mrs. George) Westefeld of Cheshire, Conn.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
