James Congdon

KENNEBUNK - James E. Congdon, 80, of Brown Street, died Saturday at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born Jan. 8, 1922 in Hardwick, Vt., a son of Harold E. and Rose M. Morin Congdon, and grew up in Colebrook, N.H.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was discharged in 1946, at which time he moved to Kennebunk.

He was employed as a chef for many years, working in local restaurants including his uncle's, Congdon's Restaurant, when it was located on Main Street in Kennebunk; Howard Johnson's on the Maine Turnpike and in Massachusetts; and the Sea Spray Hotel on Kennebunk Beach until it closed. He also served as a reserve police officer in Kennebunk during the 1950s and worked for Ness Security at Maremont Corp. in Saco and Shaw's Markets.

He was a member of the Weber LeFebvre Post American Legion in Kennebunk and the V.F.W. and enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

His wife, Irene W. Wallace Congdon, and a great-granddaughter, Taylor Ray M., died previously.

Survivors include a son, Gerald E. of Kennebunk; a daughter, Joan D. Matthews of Arundel; two sisters, Betty Lehrer of Portland and Kay McNeal of New Bern, N.C.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Rutherford Small

SACO - Rutherford Lee Small, 90, of High Street, died Friday at Southridge Living Center in Biddeford.

He was born in Highfield, New Brunswick, Canada on April 17, 1911, the son of Rutherford John and Edith Parks Small. He was educated in New Brunswick schools and graduated from Highfield School.

Mr. Small came to the Portland area in 1928 and worked for the South Portland Shipyard during World War II. After the war, he worked from 1945 until 1976 for Maine Medical Center, where he was in charge of food service.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a member of the Falmouth Rod and Gun Club for many years. Mr. Small enjoyed the company of his grandchildren, and his many friends and neighbors living at Wardwell Gardens.

He was a member of the Stroudwater Baptist Church.

His wife of over 64 years, Clara Ann Small, died in April.

Survivors include two sons, Frederick of Dayton and Robert of Sterling, Va.; one brother, Victor of Scarborough; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Joseph Morin

BIDDEFORD - Former resident Joseph C. Morin, 71, of Sturbridge, Mass., died at home Sunday.

He was born in Maine, a son of Vital and Sadie Dube Morin, and lived many years in Biddeford before moving to Enfield, Conn. He moved to Southbridge in 1989 and to Sturbridge in October.

On Feb. 2, 1952, he married Jeannette Dubuc.

Mr. Morin enjoyed carpentry and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, teaching them to "grow rocks."

He was a member of Notre Dame Church in Southbridge and United Iron Workers Union Local No. 13.

A sister, Fernande Gregoire of Arundel, died in 1998.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Donald J. and John E., both of Manchester, Conn.; two daughters, Suzan Fairbanks of Enfield and JoAnn Macha of Southbridge; five brothers, Gerald, Gil and Robert, all of Biddeford, Jean Paul "J.P." of Hamden, Conn. and Ronald of Florida; four sisters, Orella Milliard of Saco, Geraldine Souliere of Biddeford, Rina Williams of Rocky Hill, Conn. and Alfreda "Kit" Schmidt of Gorham; and four grandchildren.

Clarence McGrath

BIDDEFORD - Clarence Clayton McGrath, 64, of Biddeford and formerly of Franklin, Mass. died April 12 in Southern Maine Medical Center.

Born in Cambridge, Mass., June 9, 1936, he was the son of Clarence and Mary Januskewski McGrath. He was a graduate of St. Hedwigs School, Rindge Technical School, Class of 1955, and attended Dean Junior College in Franklin.

He had been employed for the past 38 years by the Interstate Brands Corporaton, Hostess and Wonder Bread, first in Natick, Mass., and most recently in Biddeford as assistant plant manager.

He had served in the Marine Corps Reserves.

Among his many interests were reading, history, and bowling.

Survivors include his wife Lorraine Madison McGrath; a son, Paul McGrath of Hopkinton, Mass.; two daughters, Theresa Sbardella of Plainville, Mass and Jeanette McGrath of Germany; several grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Rev. Norman Kellett

KENNEBUNK - The Rev. Norman L. Kellett Sr., 85, of Huntington Common, and former longtime summer resident of Railroad Avenue in Kennebunk Beach, died Saturday at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford after a brief illness.

Rev. Kellett was born Nov. 27, 1915 in Lawrence, Mass., a son of William and Mary Kellett Kellett. He graduated from Tufts University, received his master's degree from Harvard Episcopal Theological School, and received his Ph.D. from Brandeis University.

A longtime minister, Rev. Kellett served 25 years in parish ministry, serving St. Ann's Church in Lowell, Mass., Holy Trinity in Lewiston, St. John's in Gloucester, Mass., Holy Trinity in Southbridge, Mass. and St. Paul's in Peabody, Mass.

After a traffic accident, the bishop offered Rev. Kellett an opportunity, and he returned to school to earn his doctorate. Upon graduation, he taught and counseled at Fisher College in Boston. Towards the end of his teaching career, the Reverend and Mrs. Kellett took a year's sabbatical and taught at Oxford University in England. After his retirement, they returned to England and he served as a ministerial counselor with Oxfordshire Parish and as Interim Rector in Woodstock, England.

During his ministry , Rev. Kellett participated in three exchange programs with English clergy, and traveled to the parishes of Hinchley Wood, Bracknell, and Ascot, for three to four months at a time. Rev. Kellett also served as Vicar for Trinity Chapel at Kennebunk Beach, which he started in 1949 and served for 50 years during the summer months, retiring in 1999.

He is a member of Ashler Lodge #104 and Kora Shrine Temple in Lewiston.

Rev. Kellett's brothers, three of whom were ministers, died previously, and his son, Norman L. "Larry" Kellett Jr., died in 1994.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Marjorie Burnham Kellett of Kennebunk; a son, Stephen B. of Appleton, Wis.; a daughter, Rosemary Breed Kellett of Gorham; and two grandchildren, William and Christopher.

Roger Roberge

SANFORD - Roger H. Roberge, 86, formerly of Cole Road in Biddeford, died Friday at the Maine Stay Nursing Home.

He was born in Biddeford on Jan. 29, 1914, a son of Gedeon and Josephine Beaulieu Roberge, and was educated in Biddeford schools.

On May 29 1937, he married Yvette Jariz at St. Joseph's Church, Biddeford. She died March 25, 1996.

Mr. Roberge worked on the family farm for 11 years, and then spent eight years at the Saco-Lowell Shops. He also worked six years at the Biddeford Dairy and six years at St. Joseph's cemetery in Biddeford. He last worked for 20 years at Saco Tanning Co., retiring in 1979.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church and of Union St. Jean de Baptiste.

Two daughters died previously, Charlene in 1993 and Marguerite G. Lowe in 1996.

Surviving are three sons, Roger A. of Lyman, Paul A. of Saco and Arthur G. of Arundel; four daughters, Priscille Laroche of Arundel, Gloria J. Hartsell and Bernadette (Mrs. Arthur) Plante, both of Biddeford, and Lorraine (Mrs. Rene) St. Ours of Saco; 26 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Violet Ledoux

SACO - Violet J. Ledoux, 70, of Garfield Street, died Sunday at Southridge Living Center in Biddeford.

She was born in Saco on Aug. 6, 1930, a daughter of Emile and Laura Perreault Guay, and graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Biddeford in 1949.

Mrs. Ledoux was a communicant of Notre Dame de Lourdes Church and volunteered on the church funeral luncheon committee at the parish hall. She had been employed by John Roberts, and retired from Corning after 23 years.

She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and was a past regent, vice-regent and financial secretary and Daughter of the Year in 1993. She was a member and past treasurer of the Fremont Club and member, past president and treasurer of the ACA Assurance Association Canado-Americaine and received the Legion of Honor.

Mrs. Ledoux enjoyed cribbage, cards, bowling, traveling, reading and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Rene J. Ledoux; two sons, John of Lyman and Gary of Biddeford; a daughter, Susan Beland of Saco; four brothers, Leo Guay of Baltimore, Md., Renald Guay of Saco and Raymond and Andre Guay, both of Biddeford; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Yvonne Bougie

SANFORD - Yvonne M. Grondin Bougie, 96, of Main Street, and a longtime resident of Springvale died Saturday at the Greenwood Center.

She was born in Ham Nord, P.Q., Canada July 21, 1904, one of 11 children of William and Vitaline Lavallee Roy, and was educated in Canada.

Mrs. Bougie moved to Springvale in 1926. She was a housewife and homemaker and also worked as a dressmaker at the former Sanford Dress shop for 10 years.

She loved to play beano, and grew and picked her own raspberries.

She was a communicant of Notre Dame Church, Springvale, since 1926 and was a member of the Ladies of Ste. Anne.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Cyril Grondin in 1966; a second husband, Emery Bougie in 1971; and a son, Marcel Grondin, in 1977.

She is survived by two daughters, Rita Jourdain of Sanford and Mrs. Gerard (Lorraine) St. Pierre of Springvale; three sons, Ronald Grondin of East Machias, Noel Grondin of Sanford and Roger R. Grondin of Springvale; 20 grandchildren 35 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Ronald Corriveau

BIDDEFORD - Ronald R. Corriveau Sr., 59, of Pool Street, died Sunday at his home after a seven-year battle with throat cancer.

He was born Nov. 2, 1941 in Biddeford, a son of George and Evelyn Estes Corriveau, and was educated locally.

On Dec. 2, 1961 he married Irene Gagne at St. Andre's Church.

Mr. Corriveau was employed 11 years at Pepperell Manufacturing Co. He later worked 12 years at Delorge Bakery, and for the past 22 years had been employed at Biddeford Textile.

He enjoyed working in the woods, hunting, gardening and motorcycling. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife of 39 years; two daughters, Debra Boilard and Susan Cote, both of Biddeford; a son, Ronald R. Jr. of Sanford; two brothers, George of Biddeford and Richard of Saco; six grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Charles Fournier

SACO - Former resident Charles Joseph Fournier, 82, of Rose Bud, Ark., died Saturday.

He was born Nov. 15, 1918 in Saco, the son of Alcidas and Delina Brochu Fournier, and graduated from St. Louis High School in Biddeford.

Mr. Fournier was a tool and die maker for TRW, Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Searcy, Ark.

His wife of 41 years, Anne Patricia; four brothers, Armand, Joseph, Raymond and Arthur "Jack;" and two sisters, Marie Yvonne and Sister Marie Germaine of the Third Order of St. Francis; all died previously.

Survivors include his son, John Charles of North Little Rock, Ark.; a brother, Paul of Saco; a sister, Marie Jeanne (Mrs. Elbert) Putney of Saco; and several nieces and nephews.

Gerard Morin

ALFRED - Gerard L. Morin, 75, died Monday at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.

He was born in Sanford on April 9, 1926, the son of Wilfred and Maria Girard Morin, and attended local schools.

Mr. Morin served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II.

He was the founder of the Morin Steel Company in Alfred, which he started more than 40 years ago.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Edna Ouelette Morin; a son, Michael of Limerick; a daughter, Rachel of Falmouth; and two brothers, Roger of Shapleigh and Fernand of Sanford.
