Denise Bryant

KENNEBUNKPORT - Denise Bryant, 48, a resident of Bryant Lane, died peacefully at her home Thursday, after a brief illness.

She was born in Saco on June 24, 1954 a daughter of Charles and Joyce Whicher Foss Sr. She graduated from Kennebunk High School.

She was employed by the Maine Turnpike Authority in Portland for 12 years until her retirement two years ago.

She enjoyed reading, gardening, walking on the beach, going to NASCAR Races, snowmobiling and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband of six years, Kenneth Bryant of Kennebunkport; three daughters Riquie Lynn Martin of Dayton, Heidi Estelle Theobald and Elizabeth Ann Theobald, both of Kennebunkport; a brother, Howard Foss of Connecticut; and a sister, Rhonda Jo Foss of Arundel; two grandchildren.

Joseph Regina

BIDDEFORD - Joseph F. Regina, 90, of Bernard Ave., died Friday at Southern Maine Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born in Wilna, Poland on September 30, 1910, a son of Frank and Helen Tarazewich Regina. He came to this area as an infant and was educated in Biddeford schools, graduating from Biddeford High School in the Class of 1930 where he was captain of the football team.

Mr. Regina served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was employed with the Saco-Lowell Shops for 5 years and the with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 12 years, retiring in 1972.

Mr. Regina was a member of St. Mary's Church and the Biddeford Eagles, Aerie 804.

He enjoyed reading and following sports.

Survivors include three sisters, Emelia Hackett of Vallejo, Calif., Wanda Massie of Saco and Leda Regina of Biddeford; several nieces and nephews and grandnieces and -nephews.

Grace D. Johnson

86, of Utica, N.Y., formerly of New England, died Feb. 3 in New Hartford, N.Y. She was born Oct. 2, 1915 in Brattleboro, Vt., the daughter of Frank C. and Bellevue Kine Darling. She attended Vermont schools and Eastern Nazarene College of Boston. She was married to the late Rev. John Johnson of the Christian Missionary Alliance, and was a vital part of his life and ministry, often putting others' needs ahead of her own. She was a devoted mother, wife and homemaker and truly enjoyed the company of others in her own home. Surviving are three sons, Bob of Sanford, Ronald of Utica and Roger of Littleton, N.H.; two sisters, Marjorie Darling of Littleton and Helen Capen of Anaheim, Calif.; four grandchildren, David, Jonathan, Samuel and Rachel; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Heald Funeral Home, Springvale.

Joseph Spencer

SANFORD - Joseph "Ray" Spencer, 80, of Spencer Hill Road, died Thursday at the Greenwood Center.

He was born in Sanford on May 15, 1921, the son of Allen and Marguerite Bisson Spencer, attended Sanford schools and was a 1939 graduate of Sanford High School and a 1975 graduate of the former University of Maine at Portland/Gorham.

Mr. Spencer was a musician. He started playing trumpet in high school, influenced by his friend and neighbor, Randy Brooks. During high school, he had his own band call The Jazzalomas.

The two went to New York in 1945 and played in a band together for six months, after which Mr. Spencer returned to Sanford to be with his young family.

He worked for the former Goodall-Sanford Textile Mills and the former American Shoe Co. and drove a taxi. He played with the Sanford Community Band, The Blue Jackets, Harry Jackson, Carl Broggi, Don Doane, Ray Harrington, Doc Provencher, Ted Hebert, Brad Spinney, Bill Palace, Bud Squire, George Hall, Cyd Lerman, Rudy Wallace, and more, all over southern Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

He taught music at Wells High School and also gave private music lessons. He organized a band at the Notre Dame Institute in Alfred and taught music at Mount Assumption Institute in Plattsburg, N. Y. He learned to play many instruments because he believed that in fairness to his students he should be able to play their instruments. He enjoyed playing brass the most, and played saxophone in later years.

In his younger days he enjoyed hunting, trapping, boating, swimming and renovating his home. He frequently listened to his extensive music collection, especially jazz and big bands, and was always happy to reminisce.

A son, George, died previously.

Survivors include his wife of five years, Virginia Arbuckle Spencer; a daughter, Sandra (Mrs. Robert) Gendron of Springvale; two stepsons, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Carol Penney

LEBANON - Carol J. Penney, 65, of Cedar Lane, died Monday at her home.

She was born Feb. 29, 1936 in Rahway, N.J., the daughter of Eugene and Helen Schomburg Ludlum, attended schools in Westfield, N.J. and graduated from Westfield High School and Nasson College, in 1957, with a degree in fashion merchandising.

It was at college that she met her husband, Thomas Penney. They were married Aug. 3, 1957 in Westfield.

Mrs. Penney followed her husband to Germany, where he was stationed while he served in the armed forces, and they began to raise a family.

Upon their return to the United States, Mrs. Penney opened the Evergreen Mobile Home Park in Lebanon. For many years she took care of and managed the facility, but above all she was a mother, wife, and homemaker to her loving family.

Mrs. Penney was said to be a brilliant seamstress. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and traveling across North America.

Her son, Thomas A. Jr., died previously.

Surviving are her husband; a son, David W. of Crested Butte, Colo.; a daughter, Susan C. of Lebanon; a brother, Kenneth Ludlum of Maryland; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth of Colorado.

Mildred Ward

SACO - Mildred C. Ward, 94, of Village Green Drive, died Sunday at Evergreen Manor.

She was born in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, Canada on June 27, 1907, a daughter of Albert J. Fish and Carrie Dunbar, and graduated from Natick (Mass.) High School and Framingham (Mass.) Normal School.

She taught school in Connecticut for a short time.

In 1930, she married Walter Ward in Natick. While there, she was active in church affairs and helped with the Mothers Club of Order of Rainbow for Girls.

She moved to Maine several years ago and was a member of the Cornerstone Methodist Church .

Surviving are her husband of Saco; two daughters, Beverly Tirrell of Saco and A. Gail Wilson of Cottonwood, Ariz.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Barbara Hopkins

LEBANON - Barbara A. Hopkins, 70, died Monday at her home.

She was born in Somerville, Mass. on April 5, 1932, the daughter of George and Sophie Mae Chesnick West, and attended schools there.

A resident of this area since 1990, she lived previously in Billerica, Mass. She had been employed by Raytheon in Waltham, Mass. and for many years at the V.A. Hospital in Bedford, Mass.

Mrs. Hopkins liked to craft, crochet, read, travel and sing, but the most important aspect of her life was as a mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, William H. Hopkins; a son, William G. of Waterboro; two daughters, Kathleen A. Morey of Springvale and Cheryl M. Crear of Billerica; her mother of Saugus, Mass.; a brother, George West of Saugus; and eight grandchildren.

Lauretta Nadeau

SPRINGVALE - Lauretta C. Nadeau, 96, formerly of Mill Street, died Monday at the Greenwood Center in Sanford.

She was born in Notre Dame de Ham, Quebec, Canada on Sept. 2, 1905, a daughter of Arthur and Marie Louise Payeur Payeur, and attended school in Canada.

She came to this area in 1927.

Her first husband, Lorenzo Thibodeau, died in 1957. She then lived in Quebec for 37 years, returning to Sanford in 1998 after the death of her second husband, Telesphore Nadeau.

She was a seamstress and did alterations, made clothing and worked in several shops and mills in Sanford and Canada.

Mrs. Nadeau was a communicant of Notre Dame Church.

Survivors include two sons, Leonard Thibodeau of Sanford and Fernand Thibodeau of San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Marc Payeur of Largo, Fla.; three sisters, Ursule Ouellette of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, Therese Bouliane of Woonsocket, R.I. and Madelaine Charpentier of Belingham, Mass.; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Delia Martineau

SANFORD - Delia R. Martineau, 86, formerly of Linden Avenue, died Wednesday at Goodall Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born in Sanford on Feb. 21, 1916, a daughter of Samuel and Mary Leveille Martineau.

She had been employed at the former Allied and Universal Shoe Shops in Sanford and Springvale. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling throughout Maine and New Hampshire, and playing beano.

She was a lifelong member of St. Ignatius Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Cecile D. King of Rochester, N. H. and Anita of Sanford; two sons, Charles E. and Francis, all of Sanford; two sisters, Anita Taylor of Norwich, Conn. and Elsie Lavoie of Tampa, Fla.; 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.

Lucile Miller

SACO - Lucile Miller, 89, of Glenhaven Circle, died Wednesday at Southridge Living Center in Biddeford.

She was born Nov. 21, 1912 in Westminster, Mass., a daughter of Lucius and Margaret Hall French, was educated in schools there and graduated from Fitchburg (Mass.) High School, Simmons College in Boston in 1934 and the University of Southern Maine, where she received a Master's in education.

Two of her ancestors, Richard Warren and George Soule, arrived on the Mayflower.

In August 1940, she married E. Craig Miller in New Hampshire. He died in 1983.

After graduating from Simmons with a Food Science degree, She worked at Children's Hospital, Mass General, Beth Israel and Brigham's Hospital as a dietician. Later, she worked for F.W. Woolworth Co. as a lunch counter manager and dietician. She taught seventh grade in Old Orchard Beach in 1959 and later in Saco, where she taught seventh grade science, eventually becoming head of the Science Department. She retired from teaching in 1978.

Family members say she was a bright, selfless woman with a keen sense of humor. She was an advocate of having a good education and was always on top of current events. She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and watching the birds in the back yard and on the marsh. Prior to rheumatoid arthritis restricting her flexibility, she was a talented quilt maker and knitter. She was a source of strength and a great role model for her family and friends and never said a bad thing about anyone.

Mrs. Miller always said that she lived in one of the most fascinating times in history, as there were so many changes that occurred. As a toddler, her parents would make a three-day journey in the old Buick (top speed was 25 mph) from Westminster to the Hall family farm in Jefferson. In 1969, she was thrilled to see a man land on the moon.

A brother, Thayer French, and a sister, Cora Miller, died previously.

Surviving are two sons, Bruce of South Portland and Wayne of Saco; a daughter, Ann of Saco; two grandchildren, Bruce Jr. and Lori McPhee, both of South Portland; one stepgrandchild, six great-grandchildren, two stepgreat-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Everett Tracy

SACO - Everett F. Tracy, 74, of Spring Street, died Monday at his home.

He was born in Saco on Dec. 2, 1927, a son of Edward F. and Mamie Lucky Tracy, and attended schools there.

Mr. Tracy was a carpenter, having worked for several local building contractors.

He was a member of the Voltigeur Club, Eagles and AMVETS and enjoyed playing cards and cribbage with his many friends.

Survivors include his wife, Noreene Parent of Saco; five sons, John Parent, Richard, William and Michael, all of Biddeford, and Bruce of Waterboro; three daughters, Joyce Chase of Waterboro and Brenda Anderberg and Susan, both of Saco; four sisters, Hazel Sands, Hattie Cloutier and Ella Curlew, all of Saco, and Blanche Latulippe of Lawrence, Mass.; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Ryan Carter

SACO - Ryan Burleigh Carter, 31, of the Grant Road, passed away quietly at his home on Wednesday.

Ryan attended Saco schools and grew up in Saco.

He was a talented wood-carver and house painter, but is remembered for his love of his family, his friends and his dog Naara.

He was a peacemaker and always stopped to help a stranger.

He is survived by his sister, two brothers, a sister-in-law, one nephew, one niece, his parents, two grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and his beloved daughter Hayley.
