Josephine Sampson

BUXTON - Josephine M. Sampson, 61, of Parker Farm Road, died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital in Portland.

She was born in Portland on Oct. 31, 1941, a daughter of Theodore Roosevelt and Lenora M. (Shean) Sampson. In her earlier years, Josephine attended Pride Training School at Preble Chapel in Portland for several years.

She enjoyed soap operas, country music and loved little babies.

Josephine was predeceased by two brothers, Frank T. in 1953 and Thomas L. in 1960.

Surviving are her mother; her brother, Timothy R. Sr.; two sisters, Barbara A. Davis and Sheila E., all of Buxton; and three nephews, Frank T., Timothy R. Jr. and Thomas L.

Jeanne Foss

BIDDEFORD - Jeanne Martel Foss, 81, of Pool Street, formerly of Middle Street in Saco, died Thursday at the Renaissance.

She was born in Biddeford on July 31, 1922, the daughter of Arthur and Lucia Viger Martel, and attended St. Josephs School.

Ms. Foss worked at S.P. Shipyard in the 1940s, Songo Shoe for eight years, and Herman Shoe for 13 years, retiring from W.H. Nichols in 1987 after 13 years.

She enjoyed reading, shopping, rug hooking, flower gardening, traveling and going out with friends.

She was a member of Notre Dame de Lourdes Church in Saco

Survivors include one daughter, Madeline Ann (Mrs. George E.) Geyer of Windham and several cousins.

Raymond Faucher

BIDDEFORD - Raymond E. Faucher, D.M.D., 77, died at his home Wednesday after a short illness.

He was born Dec. 22, 1924 in Biddeford, a son of Eddy and Jeanne Pelletier Faucher. He graduated from St. Louis High School in Biddeford, St. Michaels College in Winooski, Vt. and Tufts University Dental School in Boston, Mass.

Dr. Faucher served in the Dental Corps during WWII; he also served a two and a half year dental externship in oral surgery and prosthetics at Chelsea Veterans Hospital.

After the war, he was a catcher on the local semi-professional St. Andres Apostles baseball team, where he had played against the future president, George H. W. Bush, of the Kennebunkport Collegians.

On April 24, 1952, he married Theresa Provencher at St. Josephs Church in Biddeford.

A member of St. Josephs Church, Dr. Faucher had served St. Michaels College for nine years as an associate trustee. Practicing dentistry in Biddeford for 40 years, he was a member of the York County, Greater Portland, Maine and New England dental associations, and was also a life member of the American Dental Association.

Dr. Faucher and his wife traveled extensively throughout Europe, Central and South America, Mexico, Canada and the United States. His hobby was the study of foreign languages, and he could speak five languages. After retiring from dentistry in 1990, he took up oil painting in order to keep his fingers nimble.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years; three sons, Robert R. of Biddeford, Roger H. of Chatham, Mass. and Paul R. of Steuben; a daughter, Lucille FaucherKuhlman of Skowhegan; a brother, Norman R. of Biddeford; a sister, Rita Faucher Huot of Biddeford; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

James Geddes

OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Former resident Brigadier James C. Geddes, 87, of Scarborough Terrace, died Wednesday at his home.

He was born in Paisley, Scotland and came to the United States at age 7.

He was raised in New Jersey and attended The Salvation Army School for Officer Training in New York City as a member of the Crusaders Session.

After being commissioned in 1941, he served in the Eastern Territory in Corps, ARC and Harbor Light appointments. He served in the Saco area from the late 1950s until the early 60s. He and his wife retired to the Old Orchard Beach area in August 1980.

While at Old Orchard Beach he participated in the Corps band and served as the recruiting sergeant. He was also a member of the New England Retired Officers Association.

He enjoyed music, reading and painting.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Charlotte French Geddes of Scarborough; his two sons and their wives, James and Polly (Petersen) of San Diego, Calif. and Wesley and Eva of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; a daughter, Joyce and her husband Curtis Basye of Beavercreek, Ohio; a spiritual daughter, Dorothy Hitzka of Alexandria, Va.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Timothy Waser

WELLS - Timothy Dale Waser, 38, of Minuteman Drive, died Friday at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born Sept. 16, 1965, the son of Dale (Bonnie) and Paul Waser, and was raised in Saugerties, N.Y.

He joined the Coast Guard in 1984, serving in Point Judith, R.I.; Cordova, Ala.; Montauk, N.Y.; New Haven, Conn.; and aboard the USCG Reliance in New Castle, N.H. He was a chief petty officer and, since 1998, was assigned to the USCG Group Portland, where he was Operations Center supervisor.

He is survived by his wife, Lori (nee Lightcap); his mother and father; a brother, Craig; three sisters, Melissa Woodcock, Kerrie Frederick and Jeannie Schults; a grandfather, Dale Morgan; and seven nieces and nephews.

Doris Lantagne

BIDDEFORD - Doris L. Lantagne, 80, of Elm Street, died Saturday at Southern Maine Medical Center after a long illness.

She was born in Dover, N.H. on Oct. 13, 1922, a daughter of Alice Lauzier Bouchard, and was educated in Biddeford schools.

Mrs. Lantagne worked 30 years in area shoe shops, retiring in 1987.

She enjoyed doing home crafts, knitting and crocheting.

She was a member of St. Joseph Church.

Two sons, Richard and Donald Antoine, both died previously.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Hutch of Saco and Priscilla McDaniels of Biddeford; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Watson

SPRINGVALE - Mary S. Watson, 55, of Harrison Street, died Wednesday at Brigham & Womens Hospital in Boston.

She was born in Maine on Aug. 7, 1947, a daughter of Fred and Kathleen (Weeman) Ham, and graduated from Sanford High School.

Family memberss say she enjoyed working until her illness.

She enjoyed reading and being with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald Jr. of Somersworth, N.H. and John of Springvale; five sisters, Beverly Mulhern of Limington, Shirley Gowen of Buxton, Kay Hamilton of Hollis, Patsy Walker of Westbrook and Sandra Ellsmore of Hollis; two brothers, Harry Hubbard Jr. of Hollis and Ronald Hubbard of Sanford; an aunt and uncle, John and Beulah Hubbard; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Record

KENNEBUNK - Dorothy D. Record, 89, died Saturday at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

She was born in the Bronx, New York City, N.Y. on Oct. 28, 1913, a daughter of Peter and Nellie Mattia Marchesani, and attended schools there.

She and her husband moved to Maine in 1972 from Belleville, N.J. She was a homemaker and enjoying cooking, dancing, movies and spending time with her family.

Her husband, Clayton Record, died in 1982. Three brothers, Vincent, Michael and Alfred Marchesani, also died previously.

Survivors include three sons, Albert of Highland Park, N.J., Clayton Jr. of Kennebunk and Roland of Bloomfield, N.J.; a daughter, Shirley Duva of Kennebunk; a brother, Albert Marchesani of Toms River, N.J.; three sisters, Phyllis Comey of South Carolina and Gloria Tierney and Esther Sicignand, both of Toms River; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Wallace Murray

SANFORD - Wallace J. Murray, 73, died Saturday at the Greenwood Center.

He was born in Costigan on Feb. 15, 1929, a son of James and Adelaide Soule Murray, and attended Sanford schools.

He was employed for many years as a truck driver with the former Gendron Lumber Company in Sanford, retiring in 1987.

An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member and past president of the Sanford-Springvale Fish and Game Association.

Mr. Murray was a communicant of Notre Dame Church in Springvale.

His wife, Irene R. Nadeau Murray, died in 1997.

Survivors include a son, Patrick J. of Post Falls, Idaho; three brothers, Robert of Sanford, Ernest Latham of Lewiston and Frederick Latham of South Portland; a sister, Wilhemena Thorton of Texas; two grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Brother Emile Levaque

ALFRED - Brother Emile J. Levaque, 88, of Shaker Hill, died Friday at a Springvale boarding home.

He was born in St. Eugene de Guigue, Quebec, Canada on Oct. 2, 1914, a son of Bruno J. and Aimee Guibord Levaque, and entered the Novitiate of the Brothers of Christian Instruction in 1934.

He worked two years as a lumberjack before entering religious life. He began his teaching career as a missionary in Cairo, Egypt, where he spent two years with the French Brothers until the community was expelled from the country. He then taught in Montreal, Canada; Plattsburgh, N. Y.; Alfred and Fall River, Mass. during a period of 10 years. He generally taught elementary grades or French at the high school level.

In 1951, following a difficult bout with manic-depressive illness, he accepted less stressful tasks, doing maintenance work in Alfred or helping in the poultry shed and the bakery. He served for more than 34 years and retired at the age of 70. During the last years of his life, he lived in an assisted living residence so that his lithium treatments could be more closely monitored.

Survivors include three brothers, Louis of Plattsburgh, Brother Guy, OMI of Ottawa, Canada and Jacques of Gatineau, Canada; and a sister, Sr. Evelyn, PFM of Mainfirano, Madagascar.

Linda Garland

CAPE PORPOISE - Linda Patterson Garland, 54, died of a stroke Monday at St. Andres Nursing Home in Biddeford.

She was born Feb. 26, 1949 in Bainbridge, Ga., a daughter of J.D. and Roslyn Patterson, and attended local schools and Georgia College.

An avid reader, she drove the Bookmobile in the summers, offering library books to the community.

She met her future husband, Arthur, at Georgia College, and they were married in March 1971. They moved to Kennebunkport, where her husband hyad often summered, in 1973.

Mrs. Garland taught in the Kennebunk area before teaching first grade at Mildred L. Day School in Arundel for 16 years. After a stint with substitute teaching, she found further pleasure in assisting children with special needs.

Family members say she was a committed and loving mother and would leave the housework waiting any day to spend time with her children. She particularly enjoyed the summers and would spend the days at Goose Rocks Beach with her children, exploring tidal pools, collecting shells and building sand castles. On the weekends, the family would go on boating excursions, many times exploring the marsh and picking marsh heather.

She was an active member at Church on the Cape, taking part inthe Prayer Chain, Bible study and other groups. She had a strong sense of faith that carried her through two successful bouts with cancer and was proud to be an 18-year survivor.

Survivors include her husband of 32 years, Arthur (Terry) Garland; a daughter, Jinny Garland Sass of New Castle, N.H.; a son, Todd of Cape Porpoise; a brother, James Patterson of Marietta, Ga.; a sister, Cathy Smith of Bainbridge; and many family members.

Edith Harmon

LYMAN - Edith Harmon, 86, died Monday in St. Petersburg, Fla.

She was born in Saugus, Mass. on Jan. 24, 1917.

Mrs. Harmon loved to cook and was known for her pies. She liked to clean house and called herself a Martha, a Biblical reference to Marys sister.

Family members say she was noted for her hospitality when she lived in Lynn, Mass., welcoming into her home many family members, some of whom stayed for a few weeks and some for much longer. When they were told they were too old to adopt a child, she and her husband, Stanley, took in a foster child, Philip Daniel Mancini (now Daniel Harmon of Porter) and after several years, adopted him.

Surviving are her husband of 37 years; two sons, Nathaniel Edmands of Parump, Nev. and Daniel; two stepchildren, Richard of North Reading, Mass. and Terri Riley of Framingham, Mass.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
