Dwane Hatcher
Thursday, April 3, 2003
BIDDEFORD - Dwane G. Hatcher, 59, of Alfred Street, died Wednesday at Southern Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Wichita, Kan. on Nov. 22, 1943, a son of Paul and Hazel Steward Hatcher, and attended South East High School.

Mr. Hatcher had been employed by Biddeford Textile and Carl Subler Trucking and spent several years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

An avid card player, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on cars.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Margaret Susan (Maddox) Hatcher; two daughters, Tyra of Saco and Sara Folsom of Laconia, N.H.; one son, Sean of Saco; one brother, Larry of California; one sister, Elaine Covert of Logan, Utah; two grandchildren and several nieces.

Helene Kelly

KENNEBUNK - Helene C Kelly, 77, of Port Road died Tuesday at Maine Medical Center in Portland after complications following minor surgery.

Mrs. Kelly was born in Old Town on Feb. 9, 1925. a daughter of Lawrence P and Emily Taylor Comer. She graduated from John Bapst High School in Bangor and also graduated from Mercy School of Nursing in Portland in 1947.

She began her career at Bronx Zoo in New York City. Over the years, she worked at the New Rochelle, N.Y. hospital, was head of nursing at Peekskill Hospital, N.Y. and later implemented the first coronary care unit in the state of New Hampshire at the Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia, N.H.

After retirement, she and her husband purchased the English Meadows Inn and were the innkeepers there from 1978 to 1989. She also owned and operated Salt Wind Antiques from 1978 to 1991.

Helene was an avid antiques collector and reader. Family members said she possessed a wonderful sense of humor and loved and cherished her family, pets and friends. They said her final message to family and friends was: "Love, only love, matters."

She was predeceased by her parents and beloved brother Lawrence "Lolly" Comer.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Eugene B Kelly Jr. of Kennebunk; a daughter, Claudia "CoCo" Kelly of Kennebunk; a brother, Tim Comer of Thornton, Colo.; fours sisters, Patricia Barrett and Mary Anne Thibeau of Philadelphia, Nancy Mulligan of Bangor and Sylvia Comer of Standish; nieces and nephews.

Alice Guillemette

SANFORD - Alice M. Guillemette, 98, died Tuesday at Goodall Hospital.

She was born March 9, 1905 in St. George de Windsor, Quebec, Canada, one of 22 children of Alzarie and Anna (Sinotte) Provencher, and attended schools in Canada.

She had been a resident of the Sanford area since 1920.

She had been employed by the former Sanford Mills, the former Tiera Footwear in Dover, N.H. and the former Cory Shoe.

She was a communicant of Holy Family Church and had been the oldest living member of the Ladies of St. Anne.

Two sons , Roger and Eddie, died previously.

Survivors include two sons, Donald and Normand, both of Sanford; a brother, Roland Provencher of Montreal, Canada; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

Carlton Hutchins

BUXTON - Carlton B. Hutchins, 96, of Long Plains Road, formerly of Roebuck Avenue in Saco, died Sunday.

He was born in Saco, the son of Benjamin and Cora Taylor Hutchins, and attended schools in Saco and Biddeford.

He was a mechanic at various garages, including Centers Garage, Pepperell Square Gas Station, Reed Garage and Orman Bedell. He retired in 1971 and worked part-time thereafter.

He enjoyed playing music with a dance band at the Buxton Grange Hall and Highland Grove. Recently he had played in a band with Bud Crogan in local nursing homes for more than five years. He was a member of Biddeford Dunlop Masonic Lodge, IOOF of Saco No. 2 and the Cornerstone Methodist Church.

His wife, Marion Curtis Hutchins, died previously.

Survivors include one son, Alvin of Mineola, N.Y.; one daughter, Althea Gagnon of Fall Church, Va.; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces.

Paul Thurston

KENNEBUNKPORT - Paul Wayne Thurston, 55, of Mills Road, Cape Porpoise, formerly of Biddeford, died Wednesday at Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Thurston was born in Biddeford on Feb. 3, 1947, a son of Lloyd and Mary Brunell Thurston. He attended Biddeford schools graduating from Biddeford High in 1965.

He was employed as a heavy equipment operator for Sargent Construction Co. in Old Town for many years. He also owned and operated his own construction business in Kennebunkport for several years.

Mr. Thurston is survived by his daughter, Tanya Hanson of Wells, and a brother, Jessie Thurston of Arundel, and lifelong friend Gloria Bennett.

George Wood
Weekend, November 30, 2002
BIDDEFORD - George E. Wood, 79, of Graham Street, died Thursday at Southridge Living Center.

He was born Sept. 7, 1923 in Derby, Vt., a son of Frank and Emma Brock Wood, and was educated there.

Mr. Wood worked on the C.A. Tarr dairy farm in Pomfret, Vt., for 22 years and later on the Marcel Roberts dairy farm in Newport, Vt., for several years, retiring in 1989.

On Jan. 10, 1985, he married Ann Paesano ONeill in Derby. They moved here in 1992.

He was a member of the Vermont Cattlemens Association.

Mr. Wood was predeceased by three brothers, Matt, Herbert, and Arthur Wood.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Wood of Biddeford; a sister, Mae Reed of Coventry, Vt.; three stepsons, James ONeill of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Daniel ONeill of Princeton, N.J. and Joseph ONeill of South Portland; two stepdaughters, Marie Fober of Naugatuck, Ct., and Linda Fraser of Kent, N.Y.; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Robert Vennell

SANFORD - Robert B. Vennell, 77, a lifelong resident of Sanford, passed away Thursday at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford surrounded by friends and his wife of 55 years, Jean.

A graduate of Sanford High School, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Bob was a member of the Elks Lodge and was a charter member of the Lafayette Club. He retired from Cyro in 1987.

He was predeceased by his oldest son Robert Russell Vennell in 1971.

He is survived by his wife, Jean (LeBlanc) Vennell of Sanford; a daughter, Sandy Gallagher of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a son, James Vennell of Las Vegas, Nev.; three grandsons, James Michael III, Daniel Patrick, and Cary Francis Gallagher, all of Chattanooga.

Gertrude D. Valliere

SACO - Gertrude D. Valliere, 88, of Middle Street and formerly of Temple Street, died Thursday at St. Andres Health Care Facility in Biddeford.

She was born on Aug. 15, 1914, in Biddeford, a daughter of Ernest and Euchariste Pelletier Valliere, and attended Saco schools.

Ms. Valliere was employed by Kesslen Shoe in Kennebunk for 38 years. She also worked for Fit-Rite Shoe in Saco for two years, retiring in 1981.

She was a communicant of Notre Dame de Lourdes Church in Saco and a member of the Open Door.

She enjoyed traveling, crocheting and knitting.

She was an avid bingo and card player. She was fond of her three caregivers, Pauline Martel, Jacqueline Chasse and Joanne Binette.

One sister, Laurence Perron, predeceased her.

She is survived by a brother, Leopold Valliere of Lewiston, and by several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Violet Boisvert

BIDDEFORD - Violet M. Boisvert, 68, of Marcel Avenue, died Monday at Southern Maine Medical Center.

She was born April 9, 1935, in Biddeford, a daughter of Anthony and Adrienne (Gagne) Frenette, and was educated in Biddeford and Old Orchard Beach.

On Oct. 20, 1951 she married Leo M. Boisvert at St. Josephs Church. He died Aug. 5, 1996.

Mrs. Boisvert was employed at Paquettes Factory Island Meat Market, The First National Store, A&P Supermarket and Snyders Supermarkets in Biddeford and Saco. Most recently she worked at Youlands Department Store, retiring in 1989.

Mrs. Boisvert was a member of St. Andres Church and the Biddeford Senior Citizens Club. She enjoyed working with ceramics, playing pool, bowling, crocheting and knitting.

Surviving are one son, Marcel L. of Biddeford; one daughter, Susan Wahl of Beijing, China; two brothers, Roland Frenette of Bangor and Phil Frenette of Dayton; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Scott

BIDDEFORD Elizabeth (Betty) Scott, 78, of Dearborn Avenue, died Thursday after a long battle with alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, a hereditary disorder.

She was born in Biddeford on Nov. 22, 1924, the daughter of John H. and Irma Larochelle Norwood and was educated in Saco schools, graduating from Thornton Academy as an honor student in the class of 1943.

On June 10, 1944, she married Harry A. Scott, Jr. at Most Holy Trinity Church in Saco.

Mrs. Scott worked at her fathers lobster pound in Camp Ellis, Pepperell Manufacturing Co., The Mahaney Company, TEKREP, and Southern Maine Medical Center for 13 years, retiring in 1993.

She was a clerk and life member of the Weight Watchers of Maine, member of St. Marys Sodality of Biddeford, Eucharistic Minister at St. Marys Parish in Biddeford, member and volunteer of AARP, Parish Council member and volunteer at St. Marys Parish in Biddeford, and member of Cursillo.

Mrs. Scott enjoyed people, especially her family and pets, eating out, cooking, going to her Tuesday night club meetings, shopping, sight seeing and the beach.

She was predeceased by her parents; two daughters, Elaine and Elizabeth, who died shortly after birth; an unnamed son; three brothers, George K., John and Joseph Norwood.

Surviving are her husband, Harry, of Biddeford; a son, Kenneth, of Biddeford; three daughters, Carolyn of Biddeford, Bethany Mrs. Rick) Kadlec of Biddeford, Barbara (Mrs. Jerry) Keene of Bar Harbor; seven grandchildren.

Raoul Guay
Weekend, December 6 - 7, 2003
BIDDEFORD Raoul P. Ralph Guay, 69, of West Cutts Street, died Thursday at Southern Maine Medical Center following a long illness.

He was born in Biddeford, on Dec. 23, 1933, the son of Arthur E. and Mary Louise Remillard Guay, and was educated in Biddeford schools.

Mr. Guay served in the United States Marine Corps from 1952 1955 and the National Guards for 11 years.

On June 14, 1974, he married Bernadette Nadeau.

He was a chef for 46 years, having worked at the Cascade Lodge Restaurant, Marshview Restaurant and R. Foundation Rockefeller in New York, before retiring in 1995.

Mr. Guay was a member of St. Josephs Church, Old Orchard Beach Masonic Lodge 215 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Biddeford. He enjoyed fishing, camping, the great outdoors and spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by his wife, Bernadette Guay on Oct. 3, 2000.

Surviving are two sons, Laurence Guay and his wife Sandra of Biddeford and Marcel Guay and his wife Leah of Yarmouth. Three stepdaughters, Denise (Mrs. Donald) Pushaw of Saco, Joanne (Mrs. Gerard) Bergeron of Saco, Patricia (Mrs. Donald) Quattrucci of Franklin, Mass.; three stepsons, Roger Beaulieu and his wife Marie of Biddeford, Michael Beaulieu of Biddeford, David Beaulieu and his wife Susan of Biddeford; two sisters, Mrs. Gabrielle Labelle of Saco and Mrs. Simonne Guerin of Biddeford; three brothers, Andre Guay of Biddeford, Normand Guay and Donald Guay, both of Sarasota, Fla.; two granddaughters, one grandson and several nieces and nephews.
