Carmen Provencher

SANFORD - Carmen T. Provencher, 72, died Friday at Goodall Hospital.

She was born in Sanford on Dec. 7, 1930, a daughter of Arthur and Annette Berard Dupuy, attended schools there and earned her G.E.D. in 1974 from Sanford High School.

A lifelong resident, housewife and mother, she enjoyed cooking for family gatherings and the holidays, especially Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. She enjoyed having family up to the cottage on Mousam Lake and fishing. She would knit and crochet, and family members said she liked to go on long rides with her husband, although not quietly, and had a keen sense of humor. Even through her illness, they said, she would wisecrack with her doctors and nurses.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Richard A. Dick Provencher; five sons, Michael P. of Vassalboro, David P. of Sanford, Paul R. of Acton, Dennis N. of Lake Worth, Fla. and Ronald M. of Monticello, Iowa; a daughter, Celeste R. Provencher-Fletcher of Wells; a sister, Yvette Daigle of Shapleigh; a brother, Jean Paul Dupuy of Sacramento, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Elisabeth Marshall

ALFRED - Elisabeth J. Marshall, 77, died Friday at the Newton Center in Sanford.

She was born in Bremen, Germany, a daughter of Frederick Fritz and Irmgard Christel Gruner, and attended schools in Germany.

She moved to the United States as a war bride with her first husband, Carl M. Jordan, in 1948. He died in 1957.

Along with her second husband, Sumner B. Marshall Jr., who also died previously, she owned and operated Marshalls Country Store in Alfred for 13 years.

Mrs. Marshall was a member of the Alfred Parish Church and a sports enthusiast, active in skiing, tennis and swimming.

Surviving are a son, Carl F. Jordan of Boothbay; two daughters, Charlotte J. Jones of Alfred and Barbara J. Jordan of Scarborough; a stepson, Sumner B. III; a stepdaughter, Ann M. Bean; a brother, Eberhard Gruner; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Elaine White

BIDDEFORD - Elaine L. White, 77, of Hills Beach Road, died Tuesday at Southern Maine Medical Center following a long illness.

Miss White was born in Biddeford on April 4, 1926, a daughter of Stephen and Mary Murphy White. She graduated from Biddeford High School in 1943 and from St. Josephs College in 1947, receiving a B.A. in Mathematics. Miss White earned a masters degree in Educational Administration in 1963 from the University of Maine.

She taught mathematics at C.K. Burns School in Saco for many years, and then at Saco Middle School, where she also served as vice principal for many years before retiring in 1990. Following retirement from Saco Middle School, she continued to teach daily on a volunteer basis at St. James School in Biddeford from 1992 to 2002.

Miss White was chosen by the community to receive the Great Person Award in 1991, as published by the Biddeford/Saco/Old Orchard Beach Courier.

She tirelessly served as a volunteer to help many community and church organizations. She was a board member of the Maine Irish Childrens Program, secretary of the York County Concert Association, a volunteer at Southern Maine Medical Center, a member of the Education and Industrial (E & I) Union, Retired Teachers Association, Biddeford Historical Society, an active member of St. Marys Parish, a member of St. Marys Parish Council, St. Marys Parish Finance Committee, St. Marys cemetery Committee, St. Marys Social Justice and Peace Commission, and St. Marys Sodality.

Elaine had several keen interests, which included the welfare and education of children, music, travel and her Irish heritage. She organized countless field events for children, taking them to New York City or Boston. She enjoyed spending time with the children from Northern Ireland, who visited southern Maine as part of the Maine Irish Childrens Program. She loved to play piano and sing. Above all, Miss White lived a life of always selflessly giving to others, helping people anyway she could.

Survivors include a sister, Virginia Nelson of Biddeford; a brother, Stephen Jr. of Dedham, Mass.; four nieces, Susan Schuyler and Lauren Schuyler, both of Biddeford, Debra Nelson of Saco, and Linda of Dedham; four nephews, Eric Nelson and Bruce Nelson, both of Biddeford, Daniel and Stephen, both of Dedham.

Robert Desjardins

SANFORD - Robert P. Desjardins, 59, of Nason Street, died May 28 at Bainbridge (Ga.) Memorial Hospital.

He was born Sept. 20, 1943 in York, a son of Orel F. and Florence A. Lytle Desjardins, and attended Traip Academy in Kittery.

He was an Air Force veteran.

Mr. Desjardins was employed by Simplex Wire & Cable in North Berwick for seven years. He also was proprietor of a siding and insulation business.

He was the chaplain and a member of American Legion Post 26 in Biddeford and a member of the American Legion in Lyons and Donalsonville, Ga. He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Belisle Desjardins of Biddeford; three sons, Richard of Sanford, Ralph of Biddeford and Robert Jr. of Great Falls, Mont.; one daughter, Robyn of Biddeford; two brothers, Donald of Donalsonville and Orel Skip Jr. of El Paso, Texas; one sister, Deborah Carmel of Wells; 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Hervey Maxim

LIMINGTON - Hervey L. Maxim, 90, of Cape Road, died Tuesday at his home.

He was born in Portland on Oct. 31, 1912, a son of Harry and Ethyl Small Maxim, and attended Limington schools, graduating from Limington Academy as salutatorian of his class.

Mr. Maxim spent more than 25 years as a woodsman in the logging business, primarily for Hawkes Lumber Company of Standish. He worked several years for Thornton Sheet Metal in Waterboro and the Sanford Woolen Mill.

He was active in town affairs and served on various boards. He was a member of Adoniram Masonic Lodge No. 27. He loved gardening and enjoyed making rustic wooden baskets.

Surviving are his wife, Elsie (Moulton) Maxim of Limington; three sons, Gordon of Murray, Utah, Norman of Lunenburg, Mass. and Clinton of Wilbraham, Mass.; a daughter, Carolyn Hicks of Auburndale, Fla.; a sister, Louise Chick of Limington; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Claire Dube

SACO - Claire M. Dube, 80, of Garfield Street, died Tuesday at her home.

She was born June 28, 1922 in North Kennebunkport, a daughter of Henry and Blanche Pinard Chenard, and graduated from Biddeford High School in 1941.

Mrs. Dube was employed by the Saco Lowell Shops for 25 years. Later, she stayed home and raised her two children. Most recently, she returned to work for Nike and Fiber Materials, Inc., retiring in 1990.

She enjoyed the outdoors, especially golf and gardening. She was a volunteer for Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford and Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish and School.

Mrs. Dube was a communicant of Notre Dame de Lourdes Church.

Six brothers, Paul, Mark, Roland, Raymond, Robert and Lucky Chenard, died previously.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Normand R. Dube; a son, Brian of Saco; a daughter, Donna Dube Jackman of Saco; three brothers, Conrad Chenard of Worcester, Mass., Ralph Chenard of Kennebunkport and David Chenard of Bourne, Mass.; a sister, Pauline Chenard Hevey of Biddeford; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Marilyn Gammon

LIMINGTON - Marilyn Gammon, 69, of Cape Road, died at her home Monday after a brief battle with cancer.

She was born in Lovell on Oct. 19, 1933, a daughter of Ralph and Evelyn Briggs Littlefield, and attended local schools.

She married Charles E. Junior Gammon Jr. on April 10, 1949.

Mrs. Gammon worked for local companies including General Electric in Limerick, the Cornish Dress Company, Alfred Footwear in Limerick and the Hanold Company in Standish, until it closed in the mid-1990s. She continued to work various jobs until quite recently, when poor health forced her to retire.

She had been active at the South Limington Free Baptist Church for many years and her hobbies included reading and flower and vegetable gardening. Family members say she was a devoted homemaker and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are a son, C. Nathan of Windham; two daughters, Sandra J. Thomas and Candace E. Bradbury, both of Limington; two brothers, Gordon Littlefield of Lyman and Paul Littlefield of East Baldwin; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Kathleen O'Meara

BIDDEFORD - Kathleen Mary O'Meara, 94, died Sunday at St. Andres Health Care Facility.

She was born in Augusta on July 2, 1908, the daughter of Martin L. and Vera Costello Fox.

She worked for the civil service, retiring Feb. 5, 1973 from Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah. She returned to Belfast and worked as a secretary for the Head Start Program until Aug. 31, 1977.

She is survived by a son, Richard E. A. Marx of Old Orchard Beach, six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Christopher Hanzl

SANFORD - Christopher Howland Hanzl, 36, of Sanford and Marshfield Hills, Mass., died Jan. 11 at his home.

Mr. Hanzl was a 1985 graduate of Marshfield High School and a veteran of the Navy, having served on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Nimitz from 1986 to 1990.

He had a great love for music and sports. Family members say many of his happiest moments were making music with his friends or relaxing to watch a game.

Christine Caron

SACO - Former resident Christine Caron, 44, died Monday in Raleigh, N.C. after a long battle with cancer.

She was born Jan. 2, 1959 in Saco, a daughter of Marion and Sterling Libby.

She served for eight years as the executive director of the North Carolina Chiropractic Association and was a recent recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest award given by any governor to a state citizen.

Survivors include one son, Jonas Garvin of Minneapolis, Minn.; one daughter, Ciara of Raleigh; her mother of Loves Park, Ill.; three brothers, Russell Libby of San Diego, Calif., and Robert Libby and Michael Libby, both of Rockford, Ill; and three sisters, Cynthia McGrew, Katherine Libby and Theresa Hancock, all of Rockford, Ill.

Ruth Townsend

BUXTON - Ruth T. Townsend, 89, of Townsend Road, died Sunday.

She was born in Kennebunkport on Aug. 27, 1913, the daughter of Frank and Clara Townsend Brailey, attended various schools and graduated from Gorham Normal School.

She was a teacher for many years, beginning at a one-room school house in West Buxton. She taught for S.A.D. 6 from the mid 1940s until the early 1970s and in retirement was a substitute teacher and did Title One.

She was a longtime resident of Buxton, a member of the Maine State Teachers Association and Dorcas Society and volunteered quite often at the Salvation Army. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, baking, gardening and horses.

Her husband of more than 50 years, Lawrence Townsend, died in 1991.

She is survived by one son, Erlon of Buxton; one daughter, Sally Rohl of Nassau, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Irene Dubois

SANFORD - Irene J. Dubois, 86, formerly of School Street, died Sunday at the Newton Center.

She was born in Sanford on Sept. 13, 1916, the daughter of Albert J. and Marie Louise (Lizotte) Jalbert.

Mrs. Dubois was employed by the former Goodall-Sanford Textile Mills and the former Tenneford Weaving, retiring some years ago.

She was a communicant of St. Ignatius Church.

Her husband, Hector A. Dubois, died in 1996.

She is survived by a cousin, Mary Ann Hill.
