Beverly Hallam

SACO - Beverly J. Hallam, 50, of Deering Avenue, formerly of Edgewater, Fla., died Sunday at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

She was born in Norwood, Mass. on July 21, 1952, a daughter of Robert and Ruth Maker Neault, and attended Walpole (Mass.) High School.

Mrs. Hallam enjoyed doing crafts and using her computer.

Her companion is Robert Beedy of Saco, with whom she lived.

Survivors include four daughters, Bobbi-Jo McNeil of Edgewater, Jennifer Bell of Woonsocket, R.I. and Georganna and Kerri Ann, both of Saco; her mother of Woonsocket; a brother, Thomas Neault of Foxboro, Mass.; a sister, Donna Haddad of Derry, N.H.; and seven grandchildren.

Ernest Graham

NORTH WATERBORO - Ernest Ernie F. Graham, 78, died Tuesday at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.

He was born Feb.18, 1925 in Dracut, Mass., a son of John and Harriett (Mann) Graham.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Graham lived 34 years in Rockville, Conn. before moving to Maine 13 years ago. He had been employed by Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Conn. for 31 years.

Mr. Graham was a member of the Fern Chapter No. 139 Order of Eastern Star and American Legion Post 134, both of Alfred, the Bauneg Beg Grange and Waterboro Lions Club and was a Mason with Fraternal Lodge No. 55 AF & AM in Waterboro.

He enjoyed his flower gardens and would often make centerpieces for Lions Club events. He enjoyed taking day trips and dancing, and family members say he will be remembered for his warm sense of humor.

He was an active member of St. Georges Episcopal Church in Sanford and the Altar Guild.

Six of his brothers and sisters died previously.

Mr. Graham is survived by his wife of 40 years, Stella (Flood) Graham, and several nieces and nephews.

Alfred Lacerte

BIDDEFORD - Alfred J. Lacerte, 78, of Windham, N.Y., formerly of Oak Place in Biddeford, died Thursday at St. Peters Hospital in Albany, N.Y.

He was born March 31, 1924 in Fairhaven, Mass., a son of Joseph and Rose Durant Lacerte, and was educated in Biddeford schools.

Mr. Lacerte served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On Dec. 28, 1943, he married Yvonne R. Arcand at St. Josephs Church.

Mr. Lacerte had been employed by Saco-Lowell/Maremont Corp. for 44 years, retiring in 1986.

He enjoyed CB radios and fishing on his boat on the Saco River.

Surviving are a son, William P. of Biddeford; a daughter, Nancy Coran of Gilford, N.H.; two sisters, Doris Therrien of Rochester, N.H. and Alice Wenhold of Sanford; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Merton Sargent

BUXTON - Merton Kenneth Sargent, 82, of Fountain Street, died Monday at Springbrook Center in Westbrook.

He was born Nov. 14, 1920, the son of Charles and Eva Dyer Sargent, attended local schools and graduated from S.D. Hanson High School in 1939.

Mr. Sargent worked as a shipyard welder. In 1944, he joined the U.S. Army and served in Belgium during World War II.

He also worked as a cable splicer and retired from NYNEX.

He was a trustee at Weymouth Park and Berry Library, a director at South Buxton cemetery, an honorary member of the Bar Mills Fire Department, a past commander of the American Legion, a member of York County Snowmobile & Rescue Club and a 60-year member of Buxton Mason Lodge No. 115 AF & AM.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and being at his camp and in his wood lots.

His wife, Elizabeth Knowlton Sargent, died in 1989 and a son, Bruce, died in 1996.

Survivors include a son, Barry of Buxton; two daughters, Jacqueline (Mrs. Harold) Hodgdon of Hollis and Joleen (Mrs. Olin) Thomas of West Baldwin; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Joseph Picard

BIDDEFORD - Former resident Joseph Roger Picard died Dec. 3 at Manchester Memorial Hospital in Manchester, Conn.

He was born Aug. 5 1923 in Sherwood, a son of Emile and Wilda (Grimard) Picard, and graduated from St. Louis High School in Biddeford.

He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1941 and was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 4th Marine Division. He fought in the battles of Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima.

After the war he became a master carpernter, retiring from the ACMAT Corporation in 1988 after working on many buildings in Hartford, Stamford and Danbury, Conn.

He was a member of the American Legion, Army and Navy, Moose and Elks Clubs.

Three brothers, Normand, Paul and Fernand, died previously.

He is survived by a brother, Leo; a sister, Pauline; a son, Normand; and a daughter, Gloria Caye.

ERICKSON, LUANN

48, of Four Rod Road in Rochester, N.H., died Jan. 27. She was born Aug. 9, 1954, the daughter of Louis H. and Elaine J. McAleney Richards, was raised in Somersworth, N.H., graduated from Somersworth High School and attended the University of New Hampshire.

She was employed at General Electric until her early retirement.

She was a member of GEEA for many years and enjoyed dancing, snowmobiling, bowling and attending drag racing events with her husband. She loved spending time with her family and friends, especially at her summer cottage on Rangeley Lake. She welcomed everyone and enjoyed sharing campfires, stories and laughter.

She leaves behind Bob, her lifelong love and husband of 25 years; a daughter, Kristy, a senior at Keene State College; her parents of Somersworth; and a sister, Debra Thibodeau of Georgetown.

A service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday at R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester. Calling hours are from 1-2 p.m. and the memorial service is at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the New Hampshire Network Post Polio Support Group, P.O. Box 725, Somersworth NH 03878-0725.

Ruth Townsend

BUXTON - Ruth T. Townsend, 89, of Townsend Road, died Sunday.

She was born in Kennebunkport on Aug. 27, 1913, the daughter of Frank and Clara Townsend Brailey, attended various schools and graduated from Gorham Normal School.

She was a teacher for many years, beginning at a one-room school house in West Buxton. She taught for S.A.D. 6 from the mid 1940s until the early 1970s and in retirement was a substitute teacher and did Title One.

She was a longtime resident of Buxton, a member of the Maine State Teachers Association and Dorcas Society and volunteered quite often at the Salvation Army. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, baking, gardening and horses.

Her husband of more than 50 years, Lawrence Townsend, died in 1991.

She is survived by one son, Erlon of Buxton; one daughter, Sally Rohl of Nassau, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

SYLVESTER, ROSE MARGARET MCGOWAN

87, of Portland, died Feb. 2.

She was born Jan. 6, 1916 in Portland, a daughter of Francis W. and Mabel Webster McGowan. As a child she moved to St. Johnsbury, Vt., but returned to Portland about three years later after the death of her mother. She attended local schools and graduated from Deering High School in 1933. She also attended Northeastern Business College and Grays Business College.

She was a secretary at Delano Mills, then worked for Great American India Company. Later she was employed as a legal secretary, retiring in 1964.

She was a homemaker and dressmaker for many years and enjoyed gardening and antiques. She was a communicant of St. Patricks Church for more than 50 years, a past president of St. Patricks Mothers Club and a member and secretary of the Parish Lay Council. She was also a former member of the Womens National Farm & Garden Association.

Her husband, John B. Sylvester, died in 1987. A brother, Francis McGowan, and two sisters, Rita Westcott and Eleanor Loring, also died previously.

Surviving are a son, John J. and his wife Joan of Alfred; two daughters, Margaret (Mrs. Howard) Rowe of Portland and Katherine (Mrs. Thomas) Frost of Baldwin; two sisters, Mary McG-Henningsen of Falmouth and Anna M. of Falmouth; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours are 2-6 p.m. Tuesday at Conroy-Tully Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patricks Church, 1342 Congress St., Portland on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, South Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Patricks Church, 1342 Congress St., Portland 04102 or to St. Josephs Manor, 1133 Washington Ave., Portland 04103.

KALNINS, MARA
Monday, August 11, 2003
43, of Boston, Mass., died there on Aug. 7. She was born Dec. 9, 1959 in Fitchburg, Mass., a daughter of Solveiga Purens and Harry Kalnins. Mara was a graduate of Notre Dame Academy, Hingham, Mass., Rhode Island School of Design and Pratt Institute, and was an accomplished award-winning graphic artist, designer, fine artist and photographer.

She worked at Weymouth Designs in Boston and later as a floral designer.

Surviving are a daughter, Sofia Perotti of the Netherlands; a son, John Luke Kalnins of Boston; her mother of Springvale; a sister, Nina Keely of Biddeford Pool; and a grandmother, Lidja Purens of Springvale.

She was predeceased by her father and a grandfather, John Purens.

She will be missed by her many friends in the recovery community in Maine and Massachusetts.

A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at St. Andrews in the Valley Episcopal Church, Tamworth, N.H. Donations may be made in her memory to The Celest House, P.O. Box 185, Springvale ME 04083.

Helen Hill

SACO - Helen E. Hill, 94, died Saturday at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

She was born in Bangor, the daughter of Frank and Mabel (Folsom) Holmes, and graduated from Old Town High School.

After attending business school in Bangor, she worked at Western Union.

She was a longtime resident of Augusta, moving to the Saco area in late 1999. She had lived at Chancellor Place, Evergreen Manor and, most recently, Scarborough Terrace.

In 1933, she married Waldo W. Hill. He died in 1987.

She was a member of Penny Memorial Baptist Church in Augusta. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and summers at her camp in Pemaquid Harbor.

She is survived by one daughter, Janet Hill Musk and her husband Gautrey of Augusta; one son, George W. and his wife Sally of Dayton; four grandsons, Jeffrey Musk of Utica, N.Y., John Musk of Westbrook, Steven of Manchester, N.H. and David of Natick, Mass.; and seven great-grandchildren.
