Sonia Cyr
Monday, February 3, 2003
SACO - Sonia M. Cyr, 92, of Water Street, died Sunday at the Springbrook Center For Healthcare in Westbrook.

She was born Oct. 3, 1910 in Biddeford, a daughter of Aime and Adeleine Pombriant Rondeau, and attended Saco schools.

Mrs. Cyr was employed by Pepperell Manufacturing in Biddeford for many years and also worked for Kesslen Shoe in Kennebunk, retiring in 1964.

She was a member of the Open Door and a former member of the Ross Center in Biddeford. She was an avid Beano player.

Mrs. Cyr was a communicant of Most Holy Trinity Church.

Two brothers and two sisters died previously.

Surviving are six sons, Donald N. of Saco, Roger and Richard, both of Sanford, Robert of Biddeford, Conrad of Buxton and Ronald of Kennebunk; two daughters, Lorraine (Mrs. Conrad) Pomerleau of Biddeford and Connie (Mrs. Ralph) Gilman of South Portland; one sister, Eliza Roux of Sanford; 23 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

William Chick

WELLS - William W. Chick, 74, of Atlantic Avenue, died Sunday at Portsmouth (N.H.) Regional Hospital after suffering a massive heart attack and complications following bypass surgery on Jan. 22.

He was born in Kittery on Sept. 28, 1928, the son of Philip P. and Anna Morse Chick, attended schools there and graduated from Robert W. Traip Academy in 1948.

Mr. Chick served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant in Korea.

A former resident of Somersworth, N.H., he was employed by General Electric as a purchasing agent and retired in 1989.

He was a communicant of Saint Marys Parish. He enjoyed the ocean and its ever-changing surf, gardening and woodworking.

His two brothers, Philip P. Jr. and Robert C., died previously.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Anne Flanagan Chick, and his daughter, Kathleen Anne, both of Wells.

Emelienne Guay
Monday, October 6, 2003
SACO - Emelienne Emily Guay, 93, of Bradley Street, died Saturday at Evergreen Manor.

She was born in Biddeford on March 6, 1910, a daughter of Joseph and Delima Cadorette Tardif, and attended schools there.

Mrs. Guay had been employed by Kesslen Shoe and Sax Glassman Shoe and retired from Pepperell Manufacturing.

She was a member of The Open Door senior center and a past member of St. Jean Baptiste.

Mrs. Guay was a communicant of Notre Dame de Lourdes Church.

Her husband, Arthur Guay, died in December 2002.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

John Bell

OLD ORCHARD BEACH - John Bell, 92, of Pine Avenue, died Friday at his home.

He was born in Birkenhead, England on April 2, 1911, a son of John and Catherine Bell, and attended schools in Birkenhead.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Royal Army.

Mr. Bell moved to the United States in 1957. He was employed by American Cyanamid in Sanford for many years, retiring in 1970. He was an avid soccer fan.

His wife of 67 years, Edith (Beaumont) Bell, died in December 2002. A sister, Lillian, also died previously.

Survivors include two sons, Michael John of Arundel and Robert of Old Orchard Beach, three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Charles Foss

SACO - Charles H. Howie Foss Jr., 43, died at his home Tuesday.

He was born in Saco on March 18, 1959, the son of Charles Howard and Joyce Mae Foss, and attended Kennebunk schools.

For the past year he had been living in Connecticut and was a custodian at an elementary school. He loved the beach, skiing and socializing with his friends.

His sister, Denise Bryant, died in August.

Survivors include a son, Charles Tyler of Alfred; a daughter, Shyla Rose of Ohio; a sister, Rhonda-Jo of Arundel; four nieces and two nephews.

Nina Farwell

SACO - Nina Farwell, 83, of Seafield Lane, died Saturday at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

She was born June 24, 1919 in Aynor, S.C., a daughter of Charlie and Isabel Hardwicke Mishoe, and graduated from Aynor High School in 1936.

Mrs. Farwell was a florist in Virginia and Kennebunk for many years. She also worked as a nutritionist at the Kennebunk Nursing Home.

Family members say she was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family and was a volunteer for several years in Saco schools.

Mrs. Farewell was a member of First Parish Congregational Church.

Her husband, Newton Farwell, died in August 1991 and a son, Charles, died in 1970.

Survivors include a daughter, Debbie (Mrs. Rodney) Choroszy of Saco; a sister, Libby Raggett of New Johnsonville, Tenn.; and two grandchildren, Reid and Teig Choroszy.

Marilyn Golzbein

OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Marilyn D. (Woolf) Golzbein, 78, of Lewis Avenue and Miami, Fla., died Sunday at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born in Boston, Mass. on Jan. 23, 1925, a daughter of Samuel and Sarah Pollack Woolf, and was educated in schools there.

In 1950, she married Nat Golzbein in Temple Beth Israel Synagogue in Old Orchard Beach. Mrs. Golzbein was co-owner of the famous Old Orchard Beach Pier and York Wild Animal Kingdom Zoo and Amusement Park in York. All of her adult life, she owned and operated Woolfs Gift Shop, which was established by her family in 1888 and located on the Pier, until the time of her death.

She was a member of Miami Showmens Association, a Life Member of Miami Childrens Hospital, Variety Childrens Hospital, and the Order of Eastern Star of Miami.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, David of Miami and Paul of Old Orchard Beach; a daughter, Roberta (Mrs. Gene) Golzbein Sauls of Miami; and two brothers, Arthur Woolf of Tennessee and William Woolf of Old Orchard Beach and Miami.

William Hall

BUXTON - William Charles Hall Sr., 51, of Chicopee Road, died Friday at his home.

He was born in Lakewood, Calif., a son of Arthur L. and Arlene Herman Hall.

He was a Navy veteran.

Surviving his wife, Vivian E. Harmon Hall; one daughter, Peggy Dixon; three sons, William Jr., Adam and Arthur, all of Buxton; his mother of Old Orchard Beach; two brothers, Steven of Old Orchard Beach and David of Farmington; three sisters, Lena Roland of Ohio and Linda Graham and Nancy Rodney, both of Portland; four granddaughters and five grandsons.

Charles Buck

WEST NEWFIELD - Charles E. Buck, 90, died Saturday in Kennebunk.

He was born Oct. 6, 1913 in Merriden, Conn., the son of Charles and Eunice Barstow Buck, and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono.

Mr. Buck was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity, a Mason with the Dayspring lodge, an Eastern Star patron, past master of the West Newfield Grange, a 25-year member of the school board and a town moderator.

He was a member of the West Newfield Congregational Church, where he served as a deacon, and was a volunteer fireman.

He owned and operated his own poultry farm. When he was not tending to his chickens or working the occasional odd job, he enjoyed golf, tennis and puttering around his garden.

Family members say he was a true gentleman who never rushed or hurried to finish a job.

A son, Archer, and a sister, Theresa, died previously.

Survivors include his wife of more than 66 years, Margaret Grover Buck of West Newfield; a son, Charles Hap of Hallowell; three daughters, Nancy Stambach of Saco, Eunice Sargent of Kennebunkport and Theresa Dube of Saco; a brother, Gurdon S. of Watertown, Mass.; a sister, Mary Cooper of Waverly, Ohio; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Harriet Patrick

SACO - Harriet Pease Patrick, born and raised in Augusta, died Thursday at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

She attended Augusta schools, graduating from Cony High School. An alumna of Colby College, she began her teaching career in Washburn and Lincoln.

Upon marrying Stephen E. Patrick, she moved to Saco, where she remained until the last two years of her life. At that time, she joined her daughter in Boothbay Harbor.

Teaching Latin and English for 25 years at Thornton Academy provided her great pleasure. Her students and she oversaw many a Latin banquet and Junior Classical League Event. Of particular pride to her was the growth of Junto, an extra-curricular group modeled after an idea of Benjamin Franklins. The meetings gave her and years of students the opportunity to study and discuss a wide range of topics not readily available in the classroom.

Gardening, literature, her many friends, and family provided her a rich life. For several years, she gave slide presentations in the local area on topics such as gardens, Boston museums, and Maine literature. She served as a docent for the Portland Museum of Art and the York Museum in Saco. She was an active member of the American Association of University Women, and in her retirement, joined several book talks and a local garden club. Since her retirement, she was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary of Boothbay Harbor and an adopted daughter and son, Olivia Rogers and Scott MacDonald of Boynton Beach, Fla.
