Ruth Larrabee

KENNEBUNK - Ruth Edna Larrabee, 87, of Western Avenue, died Wednesday at the Kennebunk Nursing Center.

She was born in Dorchester, Mass. on Sept. 8, 1916, a daughter of Clement L. and Delia Sullivan Clark of Kennebunkport, and graduated from Kennebunkport High School and Grays Business School in Portland.

She was a Red Cross nurses aide at Maine General Hospital in Portlandduring World War II.

She was a secretary for many years in Portland, and upon returning to Kennebunk was employed by the Kesslen Shoe Company and, later, by Dean Jewett, Esq. in Saco, retiring in 1979.

She enjoyed playing the piano and organ and served as a substitute organist at Village Baptist Church at the age of 18 and again in the 1960s.

She also enjoyed knitting, gardening and sewing. She made doll clothes for dolls of the early 1900s, which she placed in local shops and the Old Timers Shop in Sanford.

Her husband, Linwood, died in 1997.

She is survived by two sons, John and William, and one grandchild.

Katherine Sawyer

SACO - Katherine J. Sawyer, 78, of Winter Street Extension, died Saturday at the Renaissance in Biddeford.

Born in Saco June 23, 1924, she was a daughter of Harry and Helen Rice Boutet, graduated from Thornton Academy in 1943 and from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1946.

Mrs. Sawyer was a receptionist for Dr. Mahaney and Dr. Wolfahrt, and a nurses assistant for the doctors in the operating room of the former Webber Hospital. She retired in 1978 as a receptionist for Dr. Johnston and Dr. Dow.

She was a communicant of Most Holy Trinity Church.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Alan E. Sawyer; a son, Thomas of Blue Hill; a sister, Christine Savoy and a brother, Edmund Boutet, both of Saco; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Maynard Shorey

OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Former resident Maynard W. Shorey, 85, of Barnard, died Nov. 30 at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital.

He was born Feb. 12, 1918 in Augusta, the son of Percy Allen and Marion (Maxwell) Shorey, and graduated from Old Orchard Beach High School in 1937.

During his high school years he had worked at area garages in Old Orchard Beach. He managed the Community Oil Company Service Station in Portland from 1937-40 and the Farrar Brown Automotive Wholesale retail store in Biddeford from 1940-1950.

He became a sales engineer for the Marquette Manufacturing Company of Minneapolis, Minn., serving New York from 1950-56. He was salesmanager and assistant general manager for the United Auto Parts Stores in Biddeford from 1956-67. He retirerd in November 1977 after a serious automobile accident.

He was a member of the Saco and Biddeford Kiwanis Club, the Masonic Order of Masons No. 215 in Old Orchard Beach (since 1948) and as an active member of the Boy Scouts, serving as chairman of the Old Orchard Beach Boy Scout finance program. He was also member of the Portland Mens Singing Club, soloist for the Easter Star organization in York County and member of the New York Salesmens Boosters organization.

He was an active member of the Old Orchard Beach Methodist Church, serving in the choir, and as chairman of the Evangelistic and Stewardship campaigns. He enjoyed taxidermy as a hobby.

His first wife, Wanda Foulke, and a brother, Donald, died previously.

He is survived by four sons, Thomas of Sundown, N.H., David of Falmouth, Kenneth of Norfolk, Va. and Richard of Kansas; a daughter, Joann Wiantd of Mattoon, Ill.; a brother, Wesley G. of Saco; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Norma Bragg

SANFORD - Norma A. Bragg, 77, died at her home on Sunday. She was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer in March 2002.

She was born in Lyman on Sept. 6, 1925, one of seven children of Lewis and Mary Kate Langley Gordon.

She lived in Acton until moving to Sanford in 1984.

She worked for Goodwill Industries in Sanford for 10 years until the fall of 2001, when she had to care for her husband, who was ill. She had previously worked in the local mills and for the former Sprague Electric in Sanford.

She was a member of Holy Family Church and the Ladies of St. Anne and a former CCD teacher.

Her husband of 59 years, Richard H. Bragg Sr., died May 12, 2002 and a daughter, Patricia, died in 1945. Two brothers, Lewis Gordon and Basil Gordon, also died previously.

Survivors include three sons, Richard Jr. and Stephen, both of Sanford, and Thomas of Alfred; a daughter, Karen Stevens of Wells; two sisters, Glenola (Mrs. George) Shorey of Old Orchard Beach and Noreen (Mrs. Linwood) Parker of Saco; two brothers, Nathan Gordon of Foxboro, Mass. and Anthony Gordon of Saco; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

WELLS Marguerite Peggy Clinton, 68, of Robinson Road, formerly of Sanford, died Saturday at her home.

She was born Sept. 29, 1934 in Woburn, Mass., a daughter of Thomas and Carrie (Hill) McGuerty.

She enjoyed country music, keeping up with current events, collecting Al Jolsen memorabilia and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was a member of the Unitarian Church of Sanford.

Her husband, William Clinton, a daughter, Brenda Seal, a sister, Mary and a grandchild died previously.

Surviving are three daughters, Joanne Hansen of Wells, Carrie Sperdakos of Gray and Donna Ariza of Redding, Calif.; a brother, Thomas McGuerty; and four grandchildren.

James Cruea

LEBANON - James E. Cruea, 27, died Saturday at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born Oct. 31, 1975 in Rochester, N.H., the son of Virgil and Judith Hopkins Cruea, and was a graduate of Noble High School, where he was on the football team.

Mr. Cruea worked locally as a machinist.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding his snowmobile. He also enjoyed tinkering with cars and playing poker on Saturday nights with his friends. He loved spending time with his family and especially took pride in his nieces and nephews.

His father died previously.

Surviving are his mother of Lebanon; one brother, Virgil Jr. of Piqua, Ohio; four sisters, Angela (Mrs. Bill) Eldridge, Mary (Mrs. Jason) Mailhot and Rebecca (Mrs. Jeremy) Whitehouse, all of Lebanon, and Kristine (Mrs. Jason) Hackett of Middleton, N.H.; his grandmother, Louise Hopkins of Rochester; his grandfather, James Hopkins of Idaho; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

John R. McCann

SANFORD - John R. McCann, 92, died Nov. 30 at his home.

He was born June 3, 1911 in Sanford, the son of John and Laura LaFlamme McCann.

For many years he worked for Pratt & Whitney as a quality control inspector.

A son, John, two brothers, Roland and Normand, and a sister, Florence, died previously.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Lucille Couturier McCann of Sanford; a daughter, Janet and her husband Alan Carter of Sanford; four grandchildren, Jill and her husband Alan Hall and Kelly and her husband Scott Pelchat, all of Sanford, Thomas Carter of Tennessee and Brenda and her husband James Leitchtenberg of Nebraska; eight great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Inez McCann of Springvale and Tama McCann of Florida; and several nephews.

Denis Caron

SANFORD - Denis E. Caron, 70, died Sunday at his home.

He was born in Sanford on Jan. 6, 1933, a son of Eugene and Laura (Dery) Caron, attended the former Holy Family School and was a graduate of the former St. Ignatius High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.

A lifelong resident, he was employed for 29 years with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. In his retirement, he worked for Sanford Stamping.

He was a communicant of St. Ignatius Church.

He enjoyed vegetable gardening and carpentry and had an extensive catalogued videotape collection. His family said he was meticulous and organized.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Yvonne T. (Melanson) Caron; a son, David; two daughters, Donna Cormier and her husband Clifford and Linda Chapman and her husband Randy, all of Sanford; three brothers, Gerard, Guy and Henry, all of Sanford; four sisters, Jeanne Rioux of Biddeford and Yvette Dumont, Doris Higgins and Germaine Chevalier, all of Sanford; and two grandsons.

BIDDEFORD - Former resident William Robert Heffernan, 73, died Jan. 14 in Lakewood, Wash.

He was born May 15, 1929 in Biddeford.

He retired from McChord Air Force Base after 25 years as an Aircraft mechanic foreman.

Surviving are a daughter, Cheryl (Mrs. Frank) Seaman of Ray, Wash.; a son, William Jr. of Tacoma, Wash.; his mother, Helen of Tacoma; a brother, J. Earnest Sr. of Old Orchard Beach; a sister, Mary Auger of Chicago, Ill.; and two grandsons.
