Edith (Dufault) Evans

NEWPORT - Edith M. (Dufault) Evans, 73, died November 16, 2001 at a Pittsfield hospital. She was born February 28, 1928 at Newport the daughter of James and Elsie (Sheridan) Dufault. She was employed at Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna, and from 1970 to 1990 at Bangor Mental Health Institute. She was predeceased by her husband, Chester on February 5, 2001. She is survived by 2 sons, Neil and Kevin both of Newport; 6 daughters, Cheryl Evans of Cocoa, FL, Beatrice Bowman of Newport, Cynthia Kennedy of Hanesville, GA, Marilyn Ouellette of Ellsworth, Barbara Peirce of Apopka, FL and Andrea Heckel of Palmyra; 9 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren. Friends called from 6-8 P.M. Monday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport. A graveside service was held Friday, November 23 at 12 noon at the Riverside cemetery, Newport with Rev. Dianne Danielson officiating.

Clothilde "Clo" (Alacchi) Werdt

ORONO & CANAAN - Clothilde "Clo" (Alacchi) Werdt, 77, died November 6, 2001 at a Bangor Hospital. She was born June 18, 1924 in the Bronx, New York City, New York, daughter of Silas and Elsie (Schmidt) Alacchi. She is survived by her husband John G. Werdt of Canaan; a son and his wife, John and Gail Alagna of the State of Washington; a daughter and her husband, Anne and Tom Healy of Hampden; a sister, Elizabeth Silco of Fair Oaks, California; 5 grandchildren; 2 nieces, 2 nephews and many cousins. Private services will be held at the Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Bangor. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Newport.

Helen M. Stewart

CORINNA - Helen M. Stewart, 69, died November 11, 2001 at a Pittsfield Health Care Facility. She was born July 16, 1932 at Dexter the daughter of Robert and Freda (Brown) Bennett. She attended Corinna schools and worked for a number of years in the payroll department at Dexter Shoe Company. She had retired as a secretary at Dexter Pentecostal Church due to ill health. Helen had been an active member of the church since 1973. She was predeceased by her husband, George, in 1996. She was also predeceased by 2 brothers, Ernest and Eugene. She is survived by a brother and his wife, Wendell and Marion Bennett of Exeter; 3 sisters, Marion and husband Fred Cooley of Dexter, Louise and husband Jim Cooley of Exeter, Roberta Kelley and her good friend, David Brown of Corinna; as well as several nieces and nephews. Friends called from 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna. Funeral services were held at noon Wednesday, November 14th, at the Dexter Pentecostal Church, with the Revs. Donald Maguire and Lyman Curtis, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the family lot, Morses Corner cemetery, Corinna. Memorial donations may be made to the Dexter Pentecostal Church, 38 Railroad Avenue, Dexter, ME 04930.

Charles Raymond Clukey

ST. ALBANS - Charles Raymond Clukey, 97, died November 10, 2001 at a Pittsfield Hospital. He was born July 27, 1904 at Winn the son of Charles and Margaret (Preston) Clukey. He spent his early years in Winn, moving to East Holden where he married Mabel (Keezer) Clukey May 26, 1938. He worked in the woods for many years as a teamster and scaler. Raymond was also a private chauffeur for a number of distinguished people, including Eleanor Roosevelt, while he worked for WABI during the 40's and 50's. He also worked as a security guard at Harvard University, but most of all, he was a teacher to his children. Charles and Mabel lived at Sunshine Village in Corinna before moving to Fair Haven Terrace in St. Albans. He is survived by his wife of 63 years; 6 children, Dorothy Peters and her husband Glen, Maurice Clukey, Charles Clukey and his wife Karen, all of St. Albans, Philip Clukey and his wife Jeannette of Ripley, Kenneth Clukey of Caribou, and Barbara Fitzpatrick of Oregon; 14 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren. There will be no viewing. A graveside funeral service was held 2 P.M. Tuesday, November 13th, at Maloon cemetery, St. Albans. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Newport.

Jayden Walker Stewart

WALDOBORO - Jayden Walker Stewart, 10 months and 27 days, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2002 in Waldoboro. Jayden was born June 18, 2001 in Rockport, Maine the son of Jason and Danielle Poulin Stewart. He will be remembered for his wonderful smile and sweet disposition. He will be sorely missed by his parents and brother, Tyeler Stewart. His parents wrote, J is for the joy you brought to us, A is for how amazing you are, Y is for the young man you will become, D is for the delight we feel around us, E is for our everlasting love for you and N is for how we will nurture and care for you.
He is survived by his parents, Jason & Danielle Stewart of Waldoboro, ME, Brother, Tyeler Stewart of Waldoboro, ME, Grandparents, Carol Poulin of Topsham, ME, Bob Poulin of Dexter, ME, Linda and Arthur Stewart of Harmony, ME, Great grandparents, Martha and Marshall Spaulding of Dover, Catherine Steickney of Solon, ME, Many aunts, uncles and cousins. Visiting hours were held at 10 a.m., Friday, May 17, 2002 followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro, Maine 04572.

Shirley Marie Clark

WELLINGTON - Shirley Marie Clark, a resident of South West Hill Road, died Thursday October 24, 2002 at the Redington -Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan. Ms. Clark was born September 16, 1940, daughter of Ira and Mildred (Ward) Lyons. She loved her family. She enjoyed gardening, baking and taking care of her birds. Her children and grand children were her joy. She is predeceased by her parents Ira and Mildred (Ward) Lyons. She is survived by three daughters; Rebecca Clark and Companion Kenney Trafton of Garland, Kimberly and husband Paul Tarr Jr. of Turner and Ramona and Brian Allen of Dexter, two brothers; Stephen Ward Sr. and Peggy of St. Albans, William Ward Sr. and Susan of New York; two sisters; Barbara Meservey and husband Allen of Plymouth and Sylvia Judkins and husband Peter of Palmyra; eleven grandchildren, one great grandchild, Cecil Clark and her special friend Carl Creamer. Visiting hours were held Saturday, October 26, 2002 at the Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A funeral was held Saturday, October 27, 2002 at the Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Edward Jaworski officiating. Internment will follow at the Pingree cemetery in Parkman. Arrangements are under the care of Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, Pittsfield.

Syretha Meservey

NEWPORT - Syretha Meservey, 76, a resident of Mullen Road, died Saturday, October 19, 2002 at her home surrounded by her family. Mrs. Meservey was born on August 14, 1926 a daughter of Walter and Delilah (Duplisea) Gamblin in Fort Fairfield. She attended Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield and was employed by Eastland Woolen Mill of Corinna and Guilford of Maine, Newport, where she retired. Following retirement she was employed by the Foster Grandparent Program at Carmel - Etna Head Start, where she retired. Following retirement she was employed by the Foster Grandparent Program at Carmel - Etna Head Start, where she clearly demonstrated her natural love for children. She is predeceased by her husband Edward Meservey Sr., several borthers and one sister. She is survived by five sons; Eugene and Donna Meservey of Palmyra, Edward and Alice Meservey of Corinna, Allen and Barbara Meservey of Plymouth, Samuel and Carla Meservey of Palmyra, Michael Meservey and Fiancee' Nora Austin of Dexter; two daughters; Sharon and David Dearborn of Newport and Karen and special friend Herbie of Milo; a brother Walter and Edith Gamblin of Pittsfield; 24 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren and also a special daughter in-law, Arlene Meservey. Visiting hours were held on Monday, October 21, 2002 at the Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. Funeral was held on Tuesday, October 22, 2002 at the Funeral Home with Rev. Edward Jaworski officiating. Interment followed at the Village cemetery in Pittsfield. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carmel-Etna Head Start Program, PO Box 1162, Bangor, ME 04401. Arrangements are under the care of Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, Pittsfield.

Elsie M. Holt

CORINNA - Elsie M. (Crowell) Holt, 93, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday October 15, 2002. Beloved daughter, wife, mother, nana and meme, Elsie was born August 23, 1909 at North Newport a daughter of Wilson and Annie (Gilman) Crowell. She graduated from Corinna Union Academy. Although she excelled in mathematics, it was unusual for a female to even consider a degree in that field; but she persevered and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono, Class of 1932, majoring in mathematics. Elsie was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She taught school at Frankfort High School and later served as school principal as one of the first female principals in the state. She married her high school sweetheart, Edward Barry Holt, Jr. on July 29, 1933 in Portland, and resided in North Newport. Elsie taught school at Corinna Union Academy and coached prize speaking, one act plays, and track. She was continually blessed by her many students who, through the years, have expressed gratitude for her work well done. Elsie also lent a hand as a telephone operator at the family business, West Penobscot Telephone Company. She served on many church and civic committees, such as the school board and the original SAD #48 consolidation committee. She attended the North Newport Church with her family, where she learned to play the pump organ by lamp light. As she was too young to reach the pedals herself, she needed someone else to pump the organ. After moving to Corinna with her husband and their daughter Maryanne, she became an active member of Morses Corner Baptist Church. She was very active in the Morses Corner Circle with her mother Annie Crowell. Elsie enjoyed organizing and working on church events, especially the Old Home Sunday gatherings. Several years ago she was honored for serving as church organist and choir director for 50 years. She was a member of the Corinna Literary Club, and the Sebasticook Garden Club. She was an avid fisher and sports person. She enjoyed telling stories of Moosehead Lake fishing trips to her family and friends, and was a faithful companion to Barry during his fall hunting trips. Elsie was an accomplished gardener, interior decorator, crafter, and painter in oils. She was predeceased by her husband Barry in 1973; a brother Elliot; and her traveling companions Meredith Smith and Lillian Burrill. She will be sadly missed by one of her closest friends, Martha Hatfield of Corinna and Florida; two daughters, Maryanne and husband Edric P. Starbird of Bar Harbor, Judy Richards and husband Ronald Richards of Corinna; 5 grandchildren, Scott Starbird and wife Valerie Singleton of California, Russell and wife Alisa Starbird of Houston, Texas, Edric N. and wife Caroline Starbird of Englewood, Colorado, Shawn and wife Julie Richards of Corinna, and Heather Richards of Cape Elizabeth; 9 great grandchildren, Ryan, Gregory, Castine, Katrina, Renata, and Siena Starbird, Jordan, Kelsie and Kylie Richards. Elsie often spoke with thankfulness, gratitude and love for her devoted caretakers, Phyllis Call, Waneta Neal, and Camilla Smith and other thoughtful assistants throughout the years. Friends called from 6-8 PM Thursday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna. Funeral services were held 2 PM Friday, October 18th, at the Morses Corner Baptist Church, Corinna, with the Reverend John Dunn, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Morses Corner cemetery. Alfred L. McKenney

CORINNA - Alfred L. McKenney, 82, died October 5, 2002 at a Bangor hospital. He was born November 28, 1919 at Corinna a son of Culbert and Flossie (Thompson) McKenney. He attended Dexter schools and served in the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II. After the war, he married the former Gladys Sawyer, who predeceased him August 10, 1997. He had worked as a spinner at Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna. Alfred was a member of the Pleasant Street Christian Church, and was a life member of Shirley B. Carter Post 4298, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by 2 sons, Darrell and Larry McKenney, both of Sarasota, Florida; a brother, Vernard McKenney of Dexter; a sister, Viola Bennett of Eliot; 4 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Geraldine DAmico of Zellwood, Florida; many close friends and special caregivers, and his church family. Friends called from 2-4 & 6-8 PM Wednesday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna, where funeral services were held at 1 PM Thursday, October 10th, with the Reverend Edward Jaworski officiating. Burial will be in the Pittsfield Village cemetery. A reception followed the committal service at Pleasant Street Christian Church in Corinna. Lewis L. Sargent, Sr.

PALMYRA & TROY - Lewis Leroy Sargent, Sr., 59, died September 12, 2002 at a Bangor hospital following a struggle with melanoma. He was born September 3, 1943 at Plymouth a son of Preston and Mary (Walker) Sargent. He had worked for the State Department of Transportation for 13 years. Lewis was an avid outdoorsman, especially enjoying fishing trips in the north woods. He was predeceased by a sister, Geraldine Sargent, who died in 1966. He is survived by his parents of Palmyra; his wife, Juanita (Hustus) Sargent of Palmyra; 2 sons, Lewis Sargent, Jr. and friend Becky Stevenson, and Anthony Sargent, all of Thorndike; his mother-in-law, Beatrice Hustus of Thorndike; 3 sisters, Beverly Cole and friend Fred Sabins, Louise and husband Laurence Cole, all of Troy, Mavis and husband Merle Bither of Palmyra; 2 grandchildren, Danielle and Alex Sargent of Thorndike; brother-in-law, Larry and wife Linda Hustus, sister-in-law Gwen and husband Leslie Stover, all of Thorndike; several nieces and nephews; 3 special cousins, Larry Fuller of Canaan, Russell Walker of Pittsfield, and Jerry Sullivan, Jr. of Thorndike; and special friends, Ronald Hustus of Benton and Merrill Sanderson of Thomaston. Friends called from 2-4 & 6-8 PM Sunday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services were held at 1 PM Monday, September 16th, with the Reverend Elizabeth Sullivan officiating. Katharine (Kate) G. (Moore) Hutchinson

DIXMONT - Katharine (Kate) G. (Moore) Hutchinson, 78 passed away on December 3, 2002 at her home in Dixmont, Maine with her loved ones aside of her following a long illness. Kate was born April 25, 1924, Newton, Mass. She was the daughter of Ernest and Katharine Moore of Wesley Farms, Mass. She and her family summered on Cape Cod, Barnstable, Mass. Kate married Philip K. Hutchinson, Sr. in 1943, they were blessed with nine children. As a family they resided in Lynn, Mass., Marblehead, Mass., Newburyport, Mass., were they were long time residents. Kate for twelve years loved and enjoyed her motor route for the Newburyport Daily News covering the Plum Island, Newbury/Newburyport, Mass. and a portion of Byfield, Mass. were they resided until 1993 when they moved to Dixmont, ME. Kate was predeceased her son Alan S. Hutchinson 38, of West Yarmouth, Mass. in 1994, and her daughter Sharon A. (Hutchinson) Freeman 39 of Berwick, ME in 2001. Kate is survived by her beloved husband Philip K. Hutchinson, Sr. of Dixmont, ME of all these 58 years. A son Philip K. Hutchinson Jr., daughters Barbara Hutchinson and Jacquelyn Wakefield all of Troy, ME., Bonnie Brown and Jeanne Gaouette of Detroit, ME, Sallie Zinck of Newport, ME, and Evelynn Gaouette of Lee, N.H. and Kate's loving sister Sallie Moore of West Barnstable, Mass. Kate leaves many loved Grandchildren (28) and Great Grandchildren (23) as well as her beloved friends throughout life. An April service will be announced. Donations or memorials may be sent to the American Diabetes Association and /or Hospice Service (in your areas).

Dana G. Pennell

PALMYRA - Dana G. Pennell, 91, died November 29, 2002 at a Penobscot nursing home. He was born July 4, 1911 at Palmyra a son of Leighton and Mary (Temple) Pennell. He had worked at area farms and was also a woodsman. He was predeceased by his brother Dwight, and sisters Cora Simpson and Rebecca Steward. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. A committal service will be held in the spring at the family lot, Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Palmyra. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport.

LeRoy E. Engstrom

CORINNA & NEWPORT - LeRoy E. Engstrom, 25, died unexpectedly November 23, 2002 as the result of an automobile accident. He was born April 3, 1977 in Los Angeles, California a son of Stanley and Sandra (Sloat) Engstrom. LeRoy attended Nokomis Regional High and was employed by Telepower. He enjoyed racing his car at the Unity Dirt Track. In addition to his parents of Newport, he is survived by his long-time fiancée Debra King, and two daughters, Haley and Amber Engstrom, all of Corinna; his maternal grandmother, Ruth Engstrom of Newport; and a special father figure Dale Scripture of Newport. He will be sadly missed by his brothers, Archie, Stanley, Jr., and Randy, all of Newport, and Aaron, of Panama City, Florida; as well as many friends and relatives. Friends called from 6-8 PM Tuesday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services were held at 1 PM Wednesday, November 27th, with the Reverend Carl Engstrom officiating. Burial was at the Riverside cemetery in Newport. Mary V. Appleton

CORINNA - Mary V. (Limoges) Appleton, 86, died November 25, 2002 at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor. She was born May 3, 1916 at Providence, Rhode Island a daughter of Michael and Jenny (Gibson) Limoges. She married Edwin Appleton, also of Providence, in 1936. She had resided in Sunshine Village for many years with her beloved husband, who died February 16, 1996. She was a communicant of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Pittsfield. Mary is survived by her son, James Appleton of Etna; a daughter, Mary Doody of Naperville, Illinois; 5 grandchildren, Abigail and Amy Jane Appleton, both of Etna, Megan Tempestini of Plainfield, Illinois, Bethany Hollarbush of Oswego, Illinois, and Ryan Doody of Chicago, Illinois; 3 great grandchildren, Michael and Anna Tempestini, and Connor Hollarbush. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 A.M. Wednesday at St. Agnes Church, Pittsfield, with the Reverend Father Raymond Morency officiating. Burial was at Mount Pleasant cemetery, Dexter. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.

Wileen (Bean) Grondin-Greeley

ST. ALBANS - Wileen (Bean) Grondin-Greeley, 50, died November 25, 2002 at a Bangor hospital following a long illness. She was born July 14, 1952 at Rangeley a daughter of Willis and Lorraine (Campbell) Bean. She graduated from Skowhegan High School and attended the University of Maine at Orono. She had retired from the Chancellors Office at the University of Maine. Wileen will be remembered for her love of life: of people, of dancing, camping and fishing. She is survived by her husband, Robert Greeley of St. Albans; her father Willis and step-mother Charlene of Norridgewock; a son Jeremiah Grondin, and a daughter Ashley Grondin, both of Bangor; a brother Scott Bean and his wife Carolyn of Palmyra, New York; a step-sister, Marlene Menger and husband Wayne of Weeks Mills; a step-brother, Daniel Reed of Cape Elizabeth; a nephew Shagan Bean, and a niece Saydra Bean; and her former sister-in-law and mother of Shagan and Saydra, Sandra Bean, all of Palmyra, New York. Friends called from 2-4 PM Saturday, November 30th, at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where a time of remembrance was held at 3:30 PM. Larry W. Tibbetts

EAST NEWPORT - Larry W. Tibbetts, 64, died unexpectedly November 18, 2002 at Great Moose Pond in St. Albans. He was born March 15, 1938 at St. Albans, a son of Ted Tibbetts and Kathleen Parker. After graduating from Newport High School in 1956, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force to serve his country. In 1960, Larry returned to Newport where he made his home. He was employed at the Cummings Woolen Mill, Dexter Shoe Company, and as a USDA food inspector, retiring in 1984. Larry and his beloved wife Ruth then owned and operated the East Newport Grocery for 14 years, having retired only weeks ago. He was looking forward to enjoying his new home on Moose Pond with his family and friends. Larry enjoyed fishing, metal detecting, vintage cars and mostly, the company of his family and many friends. In addition to his mother, Kathleen Brooks of Hartland, he is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ruth Elaine Tibbetts of East Newport; 3 daughters, Charlene Gray of Castlehill, Penny Metivier and husband Henry of Newport and Sue Alma of Sandwich, MA; his mother-in-law, Ruth Shaw of Etna; 5 grandchildren, Tasha and Ashley Gray, both of Plymouth, Justin and Trevor Metivier, both of Newport and Jaimee Alma of Sandwich, MA. Larry was blessed with many brothers and sisters. Surviving him are Foster Brooks and wife, Jackie, Phyllis (Brooks) Braley and husband Tom, Dale Brooks and wife Jeanne, and Wendy Brooks, all of Hartland, Danny Brooks of Burnham, Deborah (Brooks) Veryonci and husband David of Winslow; many nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Jane McMorrow and husband Mike of Newport; brother-in-law, David Shaw and wife Eileen of New Hampshire; and many loving friends, including Ginger and George Phelps, with whom they belonged to a home fellowship group since 1980, as well as Betty Morrison of Pittsfield, Donna Morris of Sandwich, MA and Moe Godine of Etna. He was predeceased by his brother, Sherwood Brooks in 1977. He is survived by 2 sons, Darrell and Larry McKenney, both of Sarasota, Florida; a brother, Vernard McKenney of Dexter; a sister, Viola Bennett of Eliot; 4 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Geraldine DAmico of Zellwood, Florida; many close friends and special caregivers, and his church family. Friends called from 2-4 & 6-8 PM Wednesday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna, where funeral services were held at 1 PM Thursday, October 10th, with the Reverend Edward Jaworski officiating. Burial will be in the Pittsfield Village cemetery. A reception followed the committal service at Pleasant Street Christian Church in Corinna. Memorial donations may be made to Pleasant Street Christian Church, 29 St. Albans Road, Corinna, ME 04928.
