Nelson E. Withee

DETROIT - Nelson Ernest Withee, 67, of Detroit died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor following a long illness. He was born July 14, 1935, in Detroit, son of Seldon and Dorothy (Wyman) Withee. He was a millworker and self-employed woodsman. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Sheila Withee of Detroit; one sister, Rebecca Calvert of Missouri; one son, Paul and wife Dassie of Kingfield; six daughters, Eve Morang and husband Ken of Standish, Tina Bjork and husband Richard of Newport, Helena Dishaw and husband Darryl of Readfield, Jill Chase and husband Del of Detroit, April Flood and husband Wade of Burnham, Cinda Withee and companion Steve Hatch of Detroit; 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours were held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 28, at D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield. Burial to take place later in the sping at the Village cemetery in Pittsfield.

Helen E. Davis

PALMYRA - Helen E. Davis, 99, died March 28, 2003 at a Pittsfield health care facility. She was born December 29, 1903 at Augusta, the daughter of Charles and Lettie (Moody) Davis. She graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1921, and Colby College, Class of 1926. Helen was a life member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority, and had worked for many years as a bookkeeper for Friend & Friend Auto Sales. She was the last survivor of 6 children. She is survived by 4 nieces, Joyce Davis of Palmyra, Natalie Booth of Pittsfield, Marion Wright of Ft. Myers, FL and Marilyn Sinclair of Belfast; a nephew, Donald Davis of Palmyra; and several grand nieces and nephews. There will be no services at this time. A graveside funeral service will be held later in the spring at the family lot, Riverside cemetery, Newport. Memorial donations may be made to the Newport Public Library, 23 Water Street, Newport, ME 04953. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport.

Ralph F. M. Bryson

CORINNA - Ralph F. M. Bryson, 71, passed away March 31, 2003 at a Bangor hospital. He was born September 8, 1931 at North Newport a son of James Patrick and F. Delia (Lynch) Bryson, Sr. He attended Newport schools and served in the U.S. Navy as a Motor Machinist Mate. For many years, he owned and operated the Corinna Service Center. After selling his business, he was employed at Guilford Industries where he invented a tool to use on the twister machine for the company. Ralph loved to dance and he was loved by all that knew him. He is survived by three children, Anthony and his wife, Roberta Bryson of E. Wilton, Patricia Palmer of Brewer and Deanna and her husband, Ronald Turner of Zionsville, IN; 5 sisters, Phyllis MacDonald of Albion, K. Jackie M DeLong of Hudson, FL, Dolores Fernald of Newport, Gloria Burrill of Corinna and Marilyn Bolduc of Dexter; 6 grandchildren, Carrie Bryson and her fiancé, Jeremy Boyles, both of Augusta, Trent Bryson of E. Wilton, Marci Palmer and her fiancé, Devon McCafferty both of Brewer, Ross Palmer of Exeter, Brooke and Chase Turner of Zionsville, IN; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, James P. Bryson, Jr. and Lewis Bryson, and a sister Louise Lovejoy. Memorial services were held 10 A.M. Friday, April 4th at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna, with the Rev. Fr. Raymond Morency officiating. Spring burial will be in the family lot, Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Dexter. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 122 State Street, Augusta, ME 04330-5615, or to a charity of ones choice. Envelopes will also be available at the funeral chapel.

Marian Eugenia (Virgie) Jacobson Zenger

CORINNA & LEESBURG, FLORIDA - Marian Eugenia (Virgie) Jacobson Zenger, 90, died peacefully March 26, 2003 at a Pittsfield health care facility. She was born March 26, 1913 at Shirley Mills, the daughter of Frank A. and Effie (Lapointe) Virgie. She attended local schools, and graduated from high school at Kents Hill School. She attended Simmons College which was affiliated with the Deaconess Hospital in Boston where she took nurses training. She worked at the following hospitals: Mayo Memorial, Dover-Foxcroft; Plummer Memorial, Dexter; and Bon Secours, Methuen, Massachusetts. Marian was also very proud of being a past worthy matron of Wassookeag Chapter # 44 OES. She was predeceased by Roland C. Jacobson, the father of their children, Shirley Jacobson Hartley and her husband Earl of Corinna, Phillip Virgie Jacobson and his wife Jane of Portland, and Gayle Marian Verock and her husband Frank of Acton. She was also predeceased by her husband Marcellus Zenger. Marian spent her retirement years in Leesburg, Florida, where she enjoyed volunteering in the local hospital and, especially, working in her gardens. Besides her children, she is survived by a sister Edith Virgie Wright of West Buxton; 13 grandchildren; many great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. John A. Toce, Jr.

NEWPORT - John A. Toce, Jr., 45, was born July 4, 1957 and died March 15, 2003. He was the son of John A. and Gloria Toce, Sr. of the Williams Road in Newport. He was the father of John A. Toce III and Angela Toce, brother of Darlene Toce and William Toce, grandfather of Angelo Toce. Funeral Services were conducted March 19, 2003 at the Brown Funeral Home. Evelyn (Merrow) Lord

ST. ALBANS - Evelyn M. Lord, 87, a lifelong resident of St. Albans, died peacefully March 23, 2003 at her home with her loving family caring for her. She was born August 3, 1915 in St. Albans, a daughter of Alton and Erma (Packard) Merrow. The last surviving member of her immediate family, Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Cyril, a sister, Althea Estes and three brothers, Clarence, Mahlon and Myron Merrow. Preferring the outdoors since childhood, she loved nature, flowers and animals. She attended nurses training at the old Sisters Hospital (later known as Seton) and was employed there for 9 years. She then worked at Sanfield Nursing Home in Hartland (formerly Scott-Webb Hospital) where she was employed for over 20 years as a charge nurse on the 2nd shift. All of her life she was a caregiver to her family and many friends. Upon her retirement in 1993, she was nominated for the Jefferson Award by her co-workers. Evelyn celebrated both occasions with family and friends. Her life long membership in the Waverly Rebekah Lodge #70 gave her much enjoyment and fulfillment. She was an active member and treasurer of the lodge until September 2002, at which time the lodge merged. In her later years she did much traveling throughout the United States and enjoyed several cruises. She attended the induction of her friend and neighbor Slim Clark to the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, and later visited Branson, MO. On one of her trips she stopped in Maryland to meet her pen pal of 65 years for the first time. On her 85th birthday, a party of nieces and nephews, including her newest great great great niece, gathered to celebrate her life. She was always a part of every family gathering from weddings, graduations, celebrations, vacations, dance recitals and the birth of the newest baby. She will be greatly missed by each and every life she touched. She will always lovingly be remembered as Auntie to all. Funeral services were held at 7 PM Tuesday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport with the Reverend Al Worden officiating. Friends called from 6 PM until the time of services. Burial will be in the Village cemetery, St. Albans, later in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Evelyns memory to Health Reach Hospice, 165 North Avenue, Skowhegan, ME 04976.

Garath "Gary" A. Buker

NEWPORT - Garath A. Buker, 55, passed away unexpectedly Monday, March 17, 2003, at a Portland hospital. He was born in Hartland, August 11, 1947, the son of the late Edson and Mildred (Dyer) Buker.
Gary was active in the U.S. Army for 22 1/2 years, having served as a sergeant 1st Class E7 in Vietnam and two terms in Germany. He was an active lifetime member of the VFW, DAV and the American Legion Post 32. Gary will be remembered for his sense of humor and love for people. He enjoyed working with computers and collecting NASCAR transporters and artifacts. He was also inventive, having designed prosthetic tools that he used and were soon used by others. He is survived and will be sadly missed by his best friend and loving wife of 34 years, Beverly of Newport; a daughter, Nicole, and her husband, Dusty Kelley of Bradford; son, Damien, and his wife, Elisha Buker of Fort Knox, Ky.; son, Destry Buker of Newport; two grandchildren, Zachary Kelley and lan Buker; a sister, Kathleen, and her husband, Carl Palmer, of Palmyra; a brother, Harlen, and Simone Tilton of Antioch, Calif.; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Gerald Edson Buker. Friends called from 1 p.m. until time of services at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, a Dignity Memorial provider. Committal services with full military honors will be conducted at Village cemetery, Palmyra, in the spring and will be announced at a later date.

Reverend Wallace E. Stanley

PITTSFIELD - Reverend Wallace E. Stanley, 73, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, March 19, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Skowhegan, August 18, 1929 the son of the late Harold and Gurtrude (Knight) Stanley. Wallace will be fondly remembered for the love that he had for his church and his God pastoring for five churches over a span of 35 years. He loved and cherrished his four grandchildren who called him "Bah". In addition to teasing his grandchildren, Wallace enjoyed playing his Gibson guitar, fishing, camping and talking on his CB Radio with friends. He is survived and will be sadly missed by his wife of 45 years, Edna of Pittsfield, two daughters; Deborah Tibbs of Vasselboro and Rebecca Fitts of Pittsfield, four grandchildren; Danielle, Katelyn and Brandon Tibbs and Samantha Fitts, a brother Harold Stanley of Dexter, several brother and sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews, special niece Sue McGee. He was predeceased by Donald Stanley, Leon Potter, Earl Knight and Delma Stanley. Friends called Friday at 1 p.m. until time of service at the Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield where a Celebration of Life was conducted 3 p.m. with the Rev. John Wentworth and Rev. Millard Dickinson officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to the American Diabeties Association or Calvery Temple, 60 West River Road, Waterville, ME 04901. Commital will be announced at a later date.

Quentin L. Shaw

ETNA - Quentin L. Kink Shaw 68 died unexpectedly March 16, 2003 at his Etna residence of natural causes. He was born in Etna at the family home May 27, 1934 the son of Charles W. and Bessie (Hamm) Shaw. He was educated in schools of Etna. Quentin joined the U.S. Army right out of school and served in Germany for several years. Kink worked in the woods for many years and he also worked picking apples for Conants Apple Orchard in Etna. He was an avid gardener and you could always find him working in his garden during the summer months. He is survived by two brothers Donald Shaw of Newport and Harold Shaw of Etna, one sister Virginia Treadwell of Bangor, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by five brothers and two sisters; Charles, Lauris, Arthur, Warren, Kenneth, Lela Shaw and Nora Thomas. Graveside services will be conducted 2 PM, May 24, 2003 at the Pleasant Hill cemetery in Etna. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Brown Funeral Home Newport.

William Theodore Reiser

ST. ALBANS - William Theodore Reiser of St. Albans, Maine, formerly of Port Jervis, New York, died suddenly on March 3rd, 2003 in St. Albans. He was born in Livingston Manor, New York in April 1929, the son of Charles William Reiser and Gladys Mae Murns Sullivan. Mr. Reiser was a US Army Veteran. He is survived by his wife Judy Reiser of St. Albans, Maine, sons Micheal Reiser of West Virginia, Stephen Reiser of New York, William T. Reiser, Jr. of New York, Carl M. Reiser of New Jersey, Lance Reiser of New York, and daughter Linda Lackey of New Jersey. Also surviving are his siblings; James Reiser, Raymond Reiser, Louis Reiser, Henry Schroeder, and Kenneth Schroeder, and his sisters, Henrietta Town and Alma Jennings. He is preceeded in death by 2 of his daughters, Bonnie Katherine Reiser and Brandy Sue Reiser, and his son Corey Fritz Reiser, his parents, Charles Reiser and Gladys Schroeder, and brothers Peter Sullivan and Charles Reiser. At the families request, no services were held. Arraignments were under the direction of Donald Shorey Funeral Home in Pittsfield, Maine.

Frankie W. Morton, Sr.

NEWPORT - Frankie W. Morton, Sr. 79, died March 13, 2003 at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born April 6, 1923 at Plymouth a son of Walter and Vera (Savage) Morton. He attended Newport High School until the beginning of his Senior year and was the manager of the last Newport High School Football team. He also managed a number of Newport High School baseball and basketball teams. An avid sports fan, he was devoted to the Nokomis Warriors, the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Celtics, and the New England Patriots. He retired from the Town of Litchfield, CT highway department and moved back to Newport. He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley (Morrell) Morton on March 4, 2002. Frank is survived by his 2 sons, Frank, Jr. and wife Audrey Morton of CT, Michael and wife Susan Morton of Newport; a brother, Gerald Morton of Dover-Foxcroft; a sister, Leona Shaw of Palmyra; 3 grandsons, Jason Morton of USAF stationed overseas, Jeremy Lehnig and Calvin Morton, both of Newport; 3 grand-daughters and a favorite nephew, Leland Shaw of Palmyra.
Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 PM Monday, March 17th at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services will be held 1 PM Tuesday, March 18th, with the Reverend Carl Engstrom officiating. Spring burial will be in Riverside cemetery, Newport. Edith (Banks) Gordon

HARTLAND - Edith Gordon, 100, died July 31, 2003 at her Canaan Road residence. She was born December 16, 1902 at Lincoln a daughter of James William and Ethel (White) Banks. Edith received her normal school training at Lincoln Academy. She taught school in Chester and Woodville before marrying James E. Gordon, Sr., and later worked as a substitute teacher. After moving to Hartland, she worked as a forelady at the H.C. Baxters Canning Company in Hartland, and later transferred to the company cannery in Corinna. Edith was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hartland, Evening Star Chapter #189, Order of The Eastern Star, and the Twilight Rebekahs. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son James E. Gordon, Jr., brothers Fred, John, Frank, and Lawrence Pat; and her sister Charlotte Lottie MacKenzie. She is survived by her daughter-in-law with whom she made her home, Sharon Gordon of Hartland, 2 daughters, Charlotte and husband Willis Bill McDougal of Hartland, Rosalie and husband George Merrow of Patten; 2 sisters, Ethel Lezberg and Phyllis Banks, both of Lincoln; 5 grandsons; 11 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 PM Sunday, August 3rd, at the First Baptist Church of Hartland with the Reverend Timothy Pemper officiating. Burial was in Pine Grove cemetery, Hartland. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 510, Hartland, ME 04943. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport.

Maurice W. Dodge

DETROIT - Maurice W. Dodge, 60, died, July 26, 2003, at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born December 29, 1942, in Detroit, son of Jerome and Jennie (Frost) Dodge. He was a member of the Deeper Life Assembly in Pittsfield. He loved to hunt and enjoyed buying and selling cars. In recent years he worked as the manager of the Newport Transfer Station. He is survived by his wife, Linda (Wallace) Dodge of Detroit; a son Shawn and his wife Lisa Bickford of Etna; 3 daughters, Melissa Amoroso and her husband Jeff of Newport, Sherri Foss and her fiancé, Eddie Leeman of Corinna, Kimberly Dodge-Cummings and her husband George of Brewer; a sister, Kathleen Hart of Pittsfield; 5 brothers, Jack of Plymouth, Richard of Pittsfield, Jerome Jr. of Cornville, Ronnie of Dexter and Glendon of Corinna; 7 grandchildren, Wayne, Nicholas and Michael Bickford of Etna, Derek and Justin Amoroso of Newport, Ricki-Lynn Foss of Corinna, and Caid Dodge of Brewer; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Shirley Dodge, and a very special granddaughter Mandi Foss. Friends called from 5 to 8 PM Monday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street in Newport. Funeral services were held at 1 PM on Tuesday, at the funeral home with Pastor Millard Dickinson officiating. Burial was in the Village cemetery in Detroit. Gerald Gustin

CORINNA - Gerald Gustin, 75, died July 23, 2003 at his residence. He was born February 19, 1928 at Blaine a son of Lee and Cassilena (Garrison) Gustin. Gerald served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II stationed in Hawaii after the attack on Pearl Harbor. On January 10, 1953, he married the former Emma Jean Saunders.
He was employed by the U.S. government putting up boundaries between the United States and Canada in New York and Maine. His other occupations included handsewing for Dexter Shoe Company, working at Abbott Woolen Mill in Dexter, Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna, and the Hartland Tannery. He will be most remembered as a dairy farmer in Corinna for 30 years, and for working in the woods with horses in the Corinna area. After retiring from farming, he worked for Project Ride for 5 years. Gerald was a member of the National Farmers Organization, Poulliot-Seavey Post #53 American Legion in Dexter, and was a past member of the North Dexter Grange. He attended the Dexter Pentecostal Church and the Newport Full Gospel Church. In addition to his wife of 50 years, he is survived by 4 sons, Delmont and wife Sue Benjamin of Florida, NY, Patrick and wife Laurie Gustin of Corinna, Kirk and wife Cassie Gustin of St. Albans, and John Gustin of Corinna; 3 daughters Blakena and husband Jeff Scott of St. Albans, Holly and husband George Mullis of Corinna, and Elaine Davis of Corinna; 3 sisters, Hilda Townsend of Newport, Lillian Adair of Plymouth, and Genieve Emery of Pittsfield; 19 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren. Friends called from 6-8 PM Sunday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport. Funeral services will be held 1 PM Monday, July 28th, at the Newport Full Gospel Church, with Geralds grandson, Pastor Matthew Bagley, and the Reverend Carl Engstrom officiating. Burial will be in the family lot, Higgins cemetery, Corinna.

Winnifred Randall

PALMYRA - Winnifred Winnie M. Randall 64 died Friday, July 4, 2003 at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. She was born in Newport, December 19, 1938 the daughter of Douglas and Edith (Wright) Dow. Winnie graduated from Newport High School class of 1957 and lived most of her life in the Newport and Palmyra area. She was employed by Wyandotte Industries, Guilford Industries, and Northeast Shoe Company. She enjoyed cooking for and spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 32 years Robert A. Randall of Palmyra, her children; Sheryl Evans and her fiancé Dale Scripture of Dixmont, David Nelson and his wife Terry of Gerradstown, West Virginia, Allen Randall and his companion Wendy Miller of Palmyra, Kevin Nelson and his wife Cathy of Palmyra, Mark Nelson and his wife Sharel of Newport, Robin Randall and her companion Adam Willette of Carmel, Holly Brown and her husband David of Winterport, Julie Edmonson and her husband Larry of Linden, Virginia.
She is also survived by her sister Margery Robinson and her husband Gerald of Hartland, 26 grandchildren 4 great grandchildren all of whom she dearly loved and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Winnie was predeceased by her parents and by her sister Elizabeth (Dow) Wyman. A graveside service was held on Wednesday July 9, 2003 at Riverside cemetery in Newport. Violet M. Small

EXETER - Violet M. Small, 104, formerly of Tibbetts Road, died July 5, 2003 at a Dexter healthcare facility. She was born April 10, 1899 at Ipswich, England, a daughter of Enoch and Alma (Cocrell) Petchey. At the age of 10 she moved with her family to Canada. On November 7, 1919, she married Herman Small of Monticello, and made their home there raising potatoes. They moved to Exeter in 1928. She was a devoted member of the Exeter Full Gospel Church, and belonged to the Exeter Ladies Aid. She is survived by a daughter, Mavis Bragg Hughes and her husband Harold of Exeter; 3 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband in 1991; her son-in-law, Herbert Bragg in 1986, and her grandson, the Reverend Paul Fickett in 1989. Friends called from 2-4 PM on Tuesday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna, where funeral services were held at 10 AM on Wednesday, July 9th. Burial will be in the family lot, Exeter Center cemetery.

John J. Wilson

PALMYRA - John James Wilson, 79, died unexpectedly July 3, 2003 at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born February 21, 1924 at Newark, New Jersey. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Cowpens.
After the war he became a licensed electrician working with an electrical contracting company in Morristown, New Jersey. After retiring he moved to Maine, living for a time in Owls Head and Union, before settling in Palmyra. He also enjoyed going to Florida during the winter months. He is survived by his loving companion of 15 years, Dorothy L. Dye, also of Palmyra. Burial will be in Palmyra Village cemetery. Private arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport.
