Samuel P. Buzzell

NEWPORT & ST. PETERSBURG, FL - Samuel P. Buzzell, 99, died February 2, 2005 at his granddaughter’s Livermore residence. He was born April 26, 1905 at Woodland, a son of Leslie and Ethel (Dwelley) Buzzell. He moved to Newport at a young age, and attended Newport, Stetson and Etna schools. He was employed at Pioneer Woolen Mill in Pittsfield and retired from H.P. Hood Co. in Newport. He attended St. James United Methodist Church in St. Petersburg, Florida. He is survived by 2 daughters, Maxine and husband Winston Head of Homosassa, Florida, Ethel and husband Dean Lishness of Pleasant Ridge Plantation; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren. Sam was predeceased by his first wife, Arlene Buzzell in 1980; and his second wife, Ruth Stewart in 2000; a son, John; a daughter, Leona Adams; as well as a brother, Earl and a sister, Hazel Stevens. Friends called from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, February 4th at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Spring burial will be in the family lot in Riverside cemetery, Newport. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 343 Gorham Road, South Portland, ME 04106.

Elsie M. Lobdell

DEXTER, PLYMOUTH & DERRY, NH - Elsie M. Lobdell, 91, passed away January 30, 2005 at her residence. She was born October 1, 1913 at Lee, the daughter of Charles and Florence (Gifford) Ludden. She graduated from Newport High School in 1932. She lived in the Newport and Dexter area before moving to Derry, NH in 1962 where she resided with her husband of 41 years, William. Elsie worked at Nashua Footwear Corp. in Lawrence, MA before joining Sanders Associates in Nashua, NH where she performed many functions in the electronic field, before retiring in 1977. She loved camping, boating and especially riding with her husband on their motorcycle. They traveled to Lake George, NY every June for the Americade, and toured New England, Florida and Canada. Elsie was a member of the Daughters of The American Revolution. She is survived by her husband William Lobdell of Derry, NH; sons, Donald Coston and wife Sue of Litchfield, Larry Coston and wife Janice of Hartland, and Luther (Gene) Nichols and wife Cindy of Nashua, NH; daughter, Beverly Tremblay and husband Stanley of Dexter; a twin sister, Alyce Hurlburt of Pittsfield and Erma Hopkins of Bangor; a brother, Kenneth Ludden of Newport; 19 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Nancy Edwards of Derry, NH. She was predeceased by 2 sons, Roger Coston and Dwinal Nichols; 5 brothers, Arleigh, Albert, Arthur, Lloyd and Floyd Ludden; and a sister, Erva Hopkins. Friends called from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 pm, Thursday, February 3rd at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services were held 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. George Darling officiating. Spring burial will be in the family lot at Sawyer cemetery in Plymouth. Dorothy M. Bodwell

DEXTER - Dorothy Miller Bodwell, 73, of Dexter, passed away peacefully after a short illness Jan. 16, 2005, surrounded by her family, at the Hibbard Nursing Facility. She was born Jan. 3, 1932, in Portland, to George and Ruth Miller. She graduated from Deering High School and the University of Maine at Orono in elementary education. She taught for many years at the Garland Elementary School and the Dexter Primary School. She will be fondly remembered by her students for her bright, white, Keds. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dexter and belonged to many clubs and organizations throughout the years. She enjoyed reading, cooking, crosswords and crafts. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Vern; two sons, Larry, of Westbrook, Dennis and his wife, Lisa, of Kennebunk; a daughter, Sharon Palmer and her husband, Reg, of Exeter; six grandchildren, Luke, Eliza, Andy, Ashley, Emily and Meghan; two brothers, Bill and David; and five sisters, Sally, Marcia, Joanie, Judy and Ginny. She was predeceased by her parents, and one brother, Bob. As per her request a private committal service will be held at a later date in Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dorothy M. Bodwell Memorial Scholarship Fund to Donna Whalen, Dexter Regional High School, 12 Abbott Hill Road, Dexter, ME.

Doreen L. (Young) Glidden

EXETER - Doreen Loretta (Young) Glidden, 72, graduated from this world to Glory January 22, 2005, peacefully at her home after a long courageous illness. She was born at Houlton, May 24, 1932 a daughter of Albert and Genevieve (Beattie) Young. She attended Patten schools and proudly received her high school diploma after completing Adult-Ed classes. She moved many times, finally settling in Exeter to raise her children. She cut seed, picked potatoes, (starting at age 6 to help buy clothes for the cold winters), and then worked on potato harvesters many times for area farmers. Doreen’s bag was always packed and she was ready to go at a moment’s notice for a trip to anywhere. She loved sightseeing the country, near or far, and checking out a new restaurant was a favorite pastime. She loved doing crafts, especially quilting, knitting, crocheting and plastic canvas work. Blessing others with big or small items was a great satisfaction to her. She also enjoyed taking several children into her home through the years, with the Foster-Parent Program. Doreen was a member of the Exeter Full Gospel Church for more than 40 years, faithfully attending and playing her tambourine to her favorite fast songs. She is survived by several children; a daughter, Vernelia D. Johndro and husband Edmund of Exeter; 6 sons, Anthony D. of Exeter, SSG Timothy G. and wife Angel of Seal Beach, CA, Dean E. and his significant other Lisabeth Meechan of Exeter, Edwin A. and wife Hope of Dexter, Donald Farnsworth and wife Perianne of Hibbing, MN and Eugene F. Hart of Exeter; 15 Special Grandchildren, Mareshah D. (Johndro) Lynch and husband Michael of Pittsfield, Miranda D. Johndro of Portland, Tammy L. Glidden of Laguna Beach, CA, Juanita E. (Glidden) Baker and husband Robert of Federal Way, WA, SGT Christopher A. Glidden and wife Christina of Ft. Riley, KS, Darlene (Glidden) Sperry and husband Sean of Palmer, AK, SGT Hannah L. She was predeceased by her husband, Gilbert E.; 2 brothers, Sonny and Donald Young; and a son, Paul. The family would like to also extend special thanks to Dr. Thomas Openshaw, the staff at Cancer Care of Maine, Dr. John Baker and staff at Newport Family Practice, the staff at Sebasticook Valley Hospital, Pastor Chris Faloon and the Exeter Full Gospel Church family. Private visiting hours were held Tuesday, January 25th, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport. At her request, all were invited to a “Graduation” Service at the Exeter Full Gospel Church, Saturday, January 29 at 4 PM with the Reverend Chris Faloon officiating. Lena M. Paine

STETSON - Lena M. Paine, 89, a gentle and loving soul, died at her home in Stetson January 21, 2005 after a brief illness. She was born a twin on May 17, 1915 in North Newport, a daughter of George and Mildred (Taylor) Cochran. She graduated from Newport High School in 1934 and the Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. Lena spent the next 50 years as a Registered Nurse and another 7 years as a private duty nurse and companion. In addition to her family and friends, she enjoyed bingo, scratch tickets, crossword puzzles and her precious kitty “Oreo”. She was a member of the Mystic Grange in Kenduskeag. Besides her parents, Lena was predeceased by a brother Terrance Cochran and sisters Pauline Gipson, Dorothy Gallison, her twin Leola Harrison, husband Ernest Paine, and ex-husband Curtis DeWitt. Lena is survived by her daughter Janet and husband Charles Leighton of Stetson; son George and wife Linda DeWitt of Waterboro; 5 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, 11 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Lena will be greatly missed, not only by her family, but by two special ladies who were like her daughter and granddaughter, Brenda Clark and Frannie Hair. Friends called from 2-3 and 6-8 PM Thursday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services were be held at 11 AM Friday, January 28th, with the Reverend George Perkins officiating. Martha A. Patterson

NEWPORT - Martha A. Patterson, 58, died January 24, 2005 at a Bangor hospital. She was born September 5, 1946 at Glens Falls, New York a daughter of Frank and Evelyn (Ryder) Dill. She was a member of the People’s United Methodist Church in Newport, and a former member of the Sebasticook Garden Club. Martha owned and operated “Salads By Martha” for a number of years, from which she sold and distributed her own recipe of homemade macaroni and potato salads to area supermarkets and restaurants. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, David R. Patterson of Newport; 2 sons, Terrance and wife Lisa Patterson of Kalida, OH, Aaron and wife Kimberly Patterson of Lafayette, IN; a brother, Fred Dill of Trenton, FL; 2 sisters, Marsha Verhille of Zephyrhills, FL., and Phyllis Dort of Windsor; 4 grandchildren, Amanda, Aaron, Gregory, and Matthew. Friends called from 2-4 & 7-9 PM Friday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services were held at 10 AM Saturday, January 29th, with the Reverend Bruce Hudson officiating.

Beatrice “Bea” (Folsom) Albaugh

NEWPORT - Beatrice L. Albaugh, 93, died January 20, 2005 at a Pittsfield hospital, following a brief illness. She was born November 25, 1911 at Newport, a daughter of John and Blanche (Grant) Folsom. She graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1929, and graduated from the University of Maine, Class of 1933. She, along with her late husband, E. Kenneth Albaugh, worked as social workers for the American Red Cross during World War II. A long-time resident of Newport, Bea was a member of the Newport Women’s Club and St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. She is survived by her son Edward and wife Jean Albaugh of South Weymouth, MA; a daughter, Ruth Donaldson of Newport; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; and several nephews. In addition to her husband, Bea was predeceased by a grandson, David McKenzie, and two brothers, Harold and Malcolm Folsom. Funeral services were held 11 AM Tuesday, January 25th, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport with the Rev. Kevin Holsapple officiating. Friends called at the funeral home from 10 AM until the time of services. Spring burial will be in Riverside cemetery, Newport. Martha (Pagel) Hass

DEXTER - Vivian M. Russell, 84, died January 17, 2005 at the Sebasticook Valley Hospital after a short illness. She was born January 10, 1921 at Wytopitlock, a daughter of Frank and Lala (McCormick) McGowan. During World War II, Vivian worked as a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and worked many years at the Abott Woolen Mill in Dexter. A member of the First Free Baptist Church in Dexter, she held the record in the history of the church in Sunday School attendance, either teaching or attending the adult class. She was also a member of the Ripley Extension, and former member of the Sno-Devils Snowmobile Club in St. Albans. Her husband Harold predeceased her in 1986. After his passing, she and her mother enjoyed many winters in Florida together. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She is survived by 3 adopted children: a son, Richard and wife Bonnie Russell of Worcester, MA; 2 daughters, Mary Russell of Clinton and Amy Russell of Alston, MA; 2 brothers, Clive and wife Lorraine McGowan of Troy and Thornton McGowan of Pittsfield; a sister, Joyce and husband James Wintle of Dexter; 5 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held 2 PM Friday, January 21st, at the First Free Baptist Church in Dexter with the Revs. Will Walters and Harold Wheeler officiating. Friends called from 1 PM until the time of the service. Spring burial will be in the Ferndale cemetery, Ripley. Emma R. Arena

PITTSFIELD - Emma R. Arena, 74, of Pittsfield passed away January 17, 2005, at the Sebasticook Valley Hospital. She was born March 28, 1930, the daughter of Paul Sr. and Mary (Cianchette) Susi. She graduated from Maine Central Institute the Class of 1948 and was a book keeper for a number of local businesses in the Pittsfield area for many years. She was a communicant of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Pittsfield, she enjoyed socializing with her family and friends, and she also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her son, Nick and his wife, Laurie Arena, of Stetson; two brothers, Paul Susi Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Pittsfield, Robert Susi and his wife, Betty, of Scarborough; two sisters, Janet Valente and her husband, Virgil, of Milo and Marlene Clark of Norridgewock; a granddaughter and a grandson, Abby and Ethan Arena, both of Stetson; her niece, Stephanie Valente of Pittsfield; several other nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held 11 a.m. Friday, January 21, 2005, at Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield. Alice E. Porter

CORINNA - Alice E. Porter, 92, died January 18, 2005 at a Dexter health care facility. She was born August 10, 1912 at North Conway, NH a daughter of Carl and Leila (Jenness) Eastman. She graduated from the High School of Practical Arts in Roxsbury, MA. Together with her husband, Joseph they owned and operated Porter’s Rexall in Dexter and Corinna. Joe and Alice enjoyed canoeing and fishing and she was adept at handicrafts, especially ceramics and knitting. She was a member of the Corinna Post American Legion Auxiliary and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, including Cynthia Shook of Corinna, Richard and wife Debbie Jones of Gardiner and William and wife Jill Jones of Dexter; several grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband in 1995 and several brothers and sisters. There will be no visiting hours. Funeral services were held 11 AM Friday, January 21st at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna with Pastor Sharon Lovejoy officiating. Rose M. Andrzejewski

HARTLAND - Rose M. Andrzejewski, 96, died January 18, 2005 at a Pittsfield health care facility. She was born March 3, 1908 at Waterville a daughter of Henry and Marie (Parker) Nadeau. Rose was a former member of the Grange and the Hartland Senior Citizens. She is survived by a sister, Ella Blevens of FL; 2 grandchildren; nieces and nephews, including Audrey Lang of Greenville, NC, and Donna Fletcher of Skowhegan. She was predeceased by her husband, Alexander; 2 sons, Rufus and Ralph; brothers Phillip, Byron and Andrew; 5 sisters, Aurilea, Mary, Loretta, Annie and Ruth. Visiting hours were held 2-4 PM Thursday, January 20th, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport. Spring graveside services will be in the Libby cemetery, Harmony. Reverend Janet E. McAuley

PALMYRA - Janet Elisabeth McAuley, 79, died January 16, 2005 at Pittsfield following a brief illness. She was born November 5, 1925 at Chicago, Illinois, a daughter of Cochran and Edna (Blanch) McAuley. Janet’s long and varied education included a BA degree from the University of Chicago in 1945, a BS from the University of Illinois in 1948, an MS degree from Wellesley College in 1950, a PhD in Anatomy and Physiology, Indiana University in 1973, a Master’s degree in Religion from Indiana University in 1980, and a Master of Divinity degree from Yale-Berkley Divinity School in 1983. Her teaching career consisted of: Teaching Assistant, University of Illinois, 1947- 1948; Instructor, University of Missouri at Columbia, 1948-1949; Teaching Assistant, Wellesley College, 1949-1950; Instructor, Morton Jr. College in Illinois, 1950-1951; Professor, Indiana University at Bloomington, from 1951-1981, and Instructor, Southern Connecticut University at New Haven, 1982. She was also Director of the Project for Disabled Studies, Southern Connecticut University at New Haven from 1982-1983. Her second career as a Pastor began with her ordination as Deacon by Bishop Jones in 1983; and her ordination into the priesthood by Bishop Frederick Wolf in 1984. After ordination, Janet began her 20 year ministry at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church until the time of her death. As an active part of the Episcopal Diocese of Maine, Janet served as Trustee, Camp Bishopswood, 1979-1997; Trustee, Coalition for Missions, 1984-1992; President of the Board, Bishopswood, 1988-1992; Diocesan Finance Committee member, 1984-1987; member, Committee on Holy Orders, 1996-2003; Adjunct Professor, Bangor Theological Seminary, 1988-2004; Pastor, St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 1984-2005; and Priest-in-Charge, Episcopal Church of the Messiah, Dexter, 1997-2002. Despite her exceptional achievements in life, Janet will be remembered for her down to earth manner, and her willingness to be a pastor to the community at large. She is survived by a cousin and her family, Joan Bettes of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; and by her St. Martin’s Parish church family. A Eucharistic Mass in celebration of her life will be held 11 AM Saturday, January 22nd, at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, U.S. Route 2, Palmyra, with the Right Reverend Chilton R. Knudsen, Bishop, Episcopal Diocese of Maine, officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in Manitoba. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 107, Palmyra, ME 04965. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Newport.

Lilla (Bragg) Eaton

CORINNA - Lilla (Bragg) Eaton, 88, died January 10, 2005 at a Bangor nursing home. She was born February 10, 1916 at Glenburn, a daughter of Charles and Eva (Hersom) Bragg. She was a long time resident of Corinna, graduating from Corinna Union Academy, Class of 1934, as valedictorian of her class. She graduated from the University of Maine, with distinction, earning a BS Degree in Elementary Education. She taught school in Corinna, Hartland, East Corinth and Stetson retiring in 1979, but continued teaching as a substitute. She was a member of the Morses Corner Baptist Church and was the last Charter member of the church. She served the church as church clerk, assistant organist, choir member, Sunday School superintendent, teacher and Deaconness. Lilla was a member of the National Education Association, the Maine Education Association and the Penobscot Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member and Past President of the Corinna Literary Club.
After retiring in 1979, she and Crosby spent winters in Zephyrhills, Florida, and visiting their children in Virginia and Arkansas. They really enjoyed having Loraine and Carl in Exeter. Lilla loved children and spent much time with them. After they were grown and left home, she would do special activities with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and other children in the neighborhood taking them sliding and skiing. In later years, making chocolates, decorating cookies on holidays, or making a collage of colored leaves in the fall with them. She especially enjoyed Linda (Worster) Harvey coming over and making ice cream. She and Cobby loved getting together with family and friends at their camp on Center Pond. Lilla was predeceased by sisters, Edith MacDougall, Gertrude Boody and Dorothy Young; and a brother Carl Bragg. She was also predeceased by her husband Crosby “Cobby” on October 10, 2004. They were married nearly 70 years. She is survived by a son, Kenneth Eaton of Leesburg, FL; 2 daughters and their husbands, Loraine and Carl Palmer of Exeter and Maxine and Jay Wheeler of Mt. Ida, AR; 8 grandchildren, Reginald and wife Sharon Palmer, Rick Palmer and fiancé, Susan Spear, De Anna and husband Peter Hartel, Susan Eaton, Wendi and husband Johnny Gwinn, Bonnie Martin, Brenda and husband Gary Crane, Jason and wife Alicia Wheeler; 11 great grandchildren, Marci and husband Devon, Ross, Luke, Ashley P., Ashley M., Lauren, Jenna, Kayla, Tracy, Corban, Bradley; and great great grandchildren Kyleigh and Kameron. Funeral services were held 11 A.M. Saturday, January 15, 2005 at the Cornerstone Baptist Church, Exeter, with Pastor Stan Griffin and Pastor Clarence Arno officiating. Friends called from 10 AM prior to the service. Spring burial will be in Morses Corner cemetery, Corinna. A luncheon and time of fellowship will be held following the service at the church. Charles J. Chandler

NEWPORT - Charles J. Chandler, 79, of Newport passed away on December 30, 2004 at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with his family at his side. Charles was born in Dexter, Maine on February 23, 1925; he was the son of the late Erwin and Anna (Edgecomb) Chandler. He graduated from Dexter High School, and then he entered the Army to serve during WWII, when he returned from service he attended the University of Maine at Orono where he graduated. Charles loved to work, it was his passion in life, as well as making others laugh, he lived to put smiles on others faces. He was a wonderful family man, a loving husband, father and grand-father. Charles loved to go camping with his family and friends. He was a member of the K of C in Pittsfield, a member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Pittsfield, and he worked many years as a plumber and electrician. Surviving him are his loving wife Jeannette (Ouellette) Chandler of twenty- nine years, a son Wayne Chandler, three daughters, Gail Eaton and her husband Bill, Cheryl Chandler and her husband George Sanders, Nancy Chandler and her husband Henry Clews, two step-daughters, Lisa Reid and her husband Paul, Heidi Nigro and her husband Lenny, a step-son, Scott Whitman, two brothers, Marshall and Hadley Chandler, four brothers-in-law, Nelson, Jim, Merlon and Roland Ouellette, a sister-in-law Joan Suhr, seventeen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, many nieces and nephews, many friends and a special friend Wilbur Bean. Charles was predeceased by his parents, two sons, Gary and Kelly Chandler and a brother Clayton Chandler. Visitation was held at Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, Maine on Sunday, January 02, 2005 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, January 03, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Agnes Catholic Church, 50 Detroit Ave., Pittsfield, Maine with Father Emmanuel Iheaka officating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to St. Agnes Catholic Church, 50 Detroit Ave., Pittsfield, Maine 04967, or to St. Agnes Catholic School, 6 Pine St., Pittsfield, Maine 04967.

Sandra M. Keeping

WELLS - Sandra M. Keeping, 66, of Littlefield Road, passed away peacefully at her residence January 1, 2005. She was born September 30, 1938 in Detroit, ME, a daughter of Kenneth and Gwendolyn (Peavey) Gray. She was a 1956 graduate of Newport High School in Newport. Sandra enjoyed her family, friends and all of her relatives. She was an avid traveler and very proud that she had visited all 50 states. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Paul R. Keeping of Wells; two sons, Paul Keeping Jr. and his wife Cindy of Montgomery, AL, and Kurt A. Keeping of Atlanta, GA; and a daughter, Cynthia Lee Williams of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; a sister, Peggy Gray of Plymouth; seven grandchildren, Clint Douglas, Katie Marie and Jake Daniel Williams, Christopher Paul and Kayla Marie Keeping, and Autumn Tucker and Aaron Welsh; and a great-granddaughter, Annabelle Grace Tucker. A graveside service was held on Monday, January 3 at 11 a.m., in the Ocean View cemetery in Wells, with the Rev. Herbert Henry of the Congregational Church of Wells officiating.
