Donald I. Starbird

PITTSFIELD - Donald I. Starbird, 72, of Pittsfield passed away on June 18, 2005 at Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield with his family at his side during his last days. Donald was truly loved and will be greatly missed. He was born on January 21, 1933 in Pittsfield, Maine, the son of Ivan and Ella (Noyes) Starbird. He was proud of having served his country in the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army. He loved his fishing, hunting, bowling and his dog Bruno. He was a very funny person and that is what attracted people to him. He is survived by his wife Carolyn of 47 years of Pittsfield, two sons, Kevin Starbird and his wife Brenda of Goldbeach, OR, Douglas Starbird and his wife Carol of Clifton, three daughters, Tammy Cassidy and her husband Michael of St. Albans, Rhonda Blomgren and her husband Chris of Pittsfield, Kelly Maker and her husband Franklin of Palmyra, ten grandchildren, Heather, Jerrit, Doug Jr., Bryce, Jessica, Kyle, Ross, Matthew, Paige, Chad, two great-grandchildren, Katana and Trinity to whom he was lovingly called “Pop”, one brother, Jan Starbird and his wife Maryann of Bangor, one sister, Marie Turner and her husband Carroll of Newport, and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Gilbert and David. Visitation will be on Tuesday June 21, 2005 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, Maine, and a funeral service will be held on Wednesday June 22, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel with Pastor Eric Kelly officiating with a internment to follow at Village cemetery in Pittsfield. Donation may be made in Donald's memory to the Respitory Department, Sebasticook Valley Hospital, 99 Grove Street, Pittsfield, Maine 04967.

Bernard A. Charrier, Sr.

PALMYRA - Bernard A. Charrier Sr., “B.C.”, 72, passed away unexpectedly on June 3, 2005. He was born July 26, 1932 at Skowhegan, a son of Leon and Antoinette “Toni” (Poulin) Charrier. He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Marilyn, his aunt Eva and uncle Bob Lessard.
He graduated from Skowhegan High School, Class of 1950. “B.C.” served as an Army medic and accountant during the Korean Conflict. He was a livestock dealer for over 50 years, and President of the Maine Livestock Dealers Association in 1987. He also worked for Agri Assets in Vermont as an agent for the State of Maine, and was a member of the Maine Farmers Bureau Association. He was influential in civic affairs, and was a Selectman for St. Albans, and a School Board member for SAD 54. He enjoyed card games, camping, fishing, and hunting, but nothing made him smile like his 18 grandchildren. “B.C.” was well known across the Northeast farming community, from Pennsylvania to New Brunswick, and especially throughout Maine. He was widely respected as a superb judge of livestock. He loved the land and the people who worked it, and he thoroughly enjoyed socializing. Between visits from family, friends, and business acquaintances, his home was a beehive of activity. He had a hearty sense of humor and a quick wit, and his stories of his travels and how he “made a good trade” were informative and entertaining. “B.C.” is survived by his loving wife Camilla; his mother-in-law Mary Bessey of Clinton; four brothers, Ronald and wife Susan of Washington State, Francis and companion Reggie of Florida, Larry and companion Duane of Skowhegan, Rudy and wife Linda of Norridgewock; one sister, Judy of Arizona; his brother-in-law Dale Gerald and wife Carol of Ripley; and his sister-in-law Carlene Bessey and companion Phyllis of Palmyra. He is also survived by five sons, Bernard Jr. and wife Sharon of Brooks, Wayne and wife Darlene of Waldo, David and companion Lancey of Detroit, Terry of Palmyra, Mark McKenney and wife Nena of Clinton; seven daughters, Debby Noonan and husband Bob of Canaan, Mary Charrier and companion Danny Mack of Detroit, Valarie Flanders and husband Dana of Plymouth, Dawn Takeuchi and husband Tim of Arizona, Lisa Boucher of Ohio, and Jean (Boucher) Blum of Arizona, Mary (McKenney) Bernatchez and husband Glenn of Clinton; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Visitation was from 3 to 5 p.m. (rosary at 3:30 p.m.) and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7th, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated 11 A.M. Wednesday, June 8th, at Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church, Water Street, Skowhegan, with the Rev. Fr. Maurice Morin officiating. Burial will be in the family lot, Fairview cemetery, Canaan. Donations in Bernard’s memory may be made to the Pine Tree Camp, P.O. Box 518, Bath, ME 04530. Donations may also be made at the funeral home.

Christopher Lesperance

ST. ALBANS - Christopher Lesperance, 40, died June 3, 2005 at his Melody Lane residence. He was born April 2, 1965 at Woonsocket, RI a son of Christopher and Pauline (Bourgery) Lesperance. He owned and operated Pine Tree Concrete Products in St. Albans. He is survived by his fiancée, Lola Taft and his parents, all of St. Albans; 2 daughters, Shylo Lesperance of Dover-Foxcroft, and Sarah Ledoux of St. Albans; his siblings, Pauline Winn of Grafton, MA, Christine Cullen of Palm Bay, FL, Eileen Plasse of St. Petersburg, FL, Diane Berthelette, Anna Laplume, Michael Lesperance, and Mary Santoro, all of Melville, MA, John Lesperance of Franklin, MA; many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated 11 AM Monday, June 6th, at St. Annes Church, Dexter, with the Rev. Fr. Raymond Morency officiating. Donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086. Arrangements are by the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport.

Rev. Millard J. Dickinson

PITTSFIELD - Rev. Millard J. Dickinson, 63, died unexpectedly June 8, 2005 at his residence. He was born August 7, 1941 at Patten a son of Milford and Ellen (Dyer) Dickinson. He graduated from Washburn High School, Class of 1959, and attended the Zion Bible Institute of Rhode Island. On August 19, 1961 he married Edith J. Nason. Millard was an ordained minister with The Assemblies of God from 1963 to 2003. Although he had officially retired from the denomination he continued to serve his church as Pastor. Millard also pastored churches in Lisbon, NH and Fryeburg before moving with his family in October 1971 to lead the Pittsfield congregation. He was instrumental in building the new church on the Weeks Road. In addition to his wife of Pittsfield and mother of Perham, he is survived by a son Philip and wife Ronda Dickinson of Jacksonville, FL; 2 daughters, Diane and husband Ricky Wilcox, and Darlene Neal, all of Pittsfield; a brother, Ronald and wife Gayle Dickinson of Perham; a sister Christine Rackleff of Waterville; 6 grandchildren, Deserae and Neill Dickinson, Seth and David Wilcox, Aaron J. Neal and Denton Neal. He was predeceased by an infant daughter Valorie and by his father, who died November 5, 1988. Funeral services were held at 2 PM on Friday, June 10th at the Deeper Life Assembly, Pittsfield, with the Rev. Llewellyn Sperrey officiating. Friends called from 1 PM until the time of the service. Burial was in the Pittsfield Village cemetery. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Newport.

Jeannette M. Votour

CORINNA - Jeannette M. Votour, 82, died June 8, 2005 at a Dexter health care facility. She was born January 22, 1923 at Van Buren a daughter of Walter and Yvonne (Derosier) Violette. She was employed at the Richmond Woolen Mill and after moving with her husband Henry to Corinna in 1961, worked at the Dexter Shoe Company from 1961 to 1983. Jeannette was a communicant of St. Anne’s Catholic Church. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia and husband John Johnson of Bakersfield, CA; 3 sisters, Margaret “Peggy” Meakin of Corinna, Geraldine and husband Maurice Lambert of Windsor, CT and Imelda “Millie” Violette of Corinna; 4 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Votour and 2 sisters, Doris Dowling and Artheline Gilbert. There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Thursday, June 16th, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Dexter, with the Rev. Fr. Raymond Morency officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery, Richmond. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, Corinna.

Clifford E. Higgins, Jr. “Sideburns”

CORINNA & ST. ALBANS - Clifford E. Higgins, Jr., 52, passed away unexpectedly June 5, 2005 at his residence. He was born August 22, 1952, the son of Clifford E. and Mattie (Richards) Higgins, Sr. He was employed at Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna and for the last 19 years for Lyle Peirce, Inc. in Newport. He was involved with the Corinna Ambulance and was a former member of the Corinna Fire Department. Cliff enjoyed woodworking, remodeling his newly purchased house and four-wheeling with the love of his life, his fiancée Carole Norton. Cliff will be greatly missed by his daughter Melissa Higgins and her children Samantha Farnham, Jordan Viles and Austin Jackson; his sons, Chris Higgins and his fiancée Jodie Walker and their daughter to be born in October, Barry Deering and his fiancée Tabbie Robichaud, and their children Matt, Kaylee and their child to be born in November; his fiancée Carole Norton and her children Eric and Aaron Kennedy and Denise Engelhardt. He is also survived by his mother Mattie and sisters, Jean, Wendy, Barbara, Sherrie and their children. He will be missed by Frank and Florence Brawn and all of his CB radio buddies who knew him by his handle “Sideburns”. Cliff was predeceased by his favorite gram, Grace Dickey, his father Cliff, Sr. and his sister Carole Littlefield and her children Charles, David, Donald and Winonia “Muffy” Higgins, who died together in a house fire. At his request there will be no funeral services. Graveside services will be held at Morses Corner cemetery, Corinna at a time to be announced. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send donations to Chris Higgins, P.O. Box 137, Corinna, ME 04928 to help with funeral expenses. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Newport.

Lewis F. Neal

ST. ALBANS - Lewis Franklin Neal, 80, died May 31, 2005 at a Bangor hospital. He was born January 28, 1925 at St. Albans, a son of Albion and Edith (Leavitt) Neal. He had lived in Minneapolis, MN for 28 years before moving back to St. Albans. Lew worked for 17 years as a security guard at the Dexter Shoe Company before retiring in 1997. He was predeceased by a brother James and a sister Shirley. Lew is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Dorothy (Willey) Neal of St. Albans; 5 brothers, Wayne, Blaine, Carroll, and Darrell, all of St. Albans, and Robert of Madison; 4 sisters, Barbara Estes and Laura Smith, both of St. Albans, Dorothy Bates of Holden, Meda Page of Palmyra; many nieces and nephews. At his request, there will be no funeral services. A family burial will be held at his parent’s lot in the Village cemetery, St. Albans. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 343 Gorham Road, South Portland, ME 04106. Arrangements are by the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Newport.

Robert R. Cote

PITTSFIELD - Robert “Bob” Ronald Cote, 73, died May 29, 2005 at a Bangor hospital following a short illness. He was born January 23, 1932 at Manchester, NH to Napolean and Henrietta (Gauthier) Cote. Bob graduated from West High School in Manchester, NH, Class of 1951. He was in the first graduating class of the Thompson School at the University of New Hampshire in 1953. He farmed in Hinsdale, NH from 1962-69, owned Keyser Pond Campground in Henniker, NH, sold real estate for Ordway Real Estate from 1969-76 and worked at the State Prison and farmed in Canterbury, NH from 1976-79. Bob moved to Maine in 1979 to farm on a larger scale. He loved to farm and in Pittsfield started with a sheep farm and then moved on to a dairy operation. He was a communicant of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Pittsfield. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Gloria of Pittsfield; son Michael and wife Jan Cote of Canterbury, NH, daughter Adele and husband Ken Scott of Orleans, MA, son William and wife Linda Cote of Loudon, NH, son Thomas and wife Brenda Cote of Pittsfield, daughter Annette and husband Paul Anderson of Falmouth, daughter Andrea and husband John Connolly of Pittsfield; a sister, Jocelyn Soares of Port St. Lucie, FL; 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Friends may be call from 4 to 8 P.M. Thursday, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated 11 AM Friday, June 3rd at the St. Agnes Catholic Church, Pittsfield, with Rev. Fr. C. James Martel officiating. Burial was in the Village cemetery, Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Agnes School, 6 Pine Street, Pittsfield, ME 04967.

Donald Pershing Sprague

Donald Pershing Sprague, 86, passed away on May 27, 2005 in Orlando. Mr. Sprague was born November 25, 1918 in Randolf, ME. Mr. Sprague retired as a Meat Cutter from A & P and Winn Dixie. He was a US Navy veteran, a Lifetime Master Mason, member of Meridian Lodge # 125 AF & AM and Bethlehem Chapter # 36, OES. Mr. Sprague also enjoyed various types of crafts. He is survived by his daughters, Donna Allen of St. Albans, ME and Marcia Hodson of Orlando, FL; five grandchildren, Mark and Erik Allen, Vicky Richardson, Teresa Stakelum and Robert I. Hodson II; six great grandchildren, Kendra and Kyle Richardson, Bailey Allen, Forrest and Nicholas Stakelum and Hayley Maynard-Hodson. A gathering for family and friends was held, Tuesday, May 31st from 9- 11 AM at the Baldwin Fairchild Conway Chapel. Funeral Services followed at 11 AM at the funeral home with interment immediately following at Highland Memory Gardens.

Eileen M. “Edie” (Clukey) Mahoney

DEXTER & CRANSTON, RI - Eileen M. “Edie” (Clukey), 72, of Narragansett Blvd., Cranston, died on Monday, May 2, 2005 at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in North Providence. She was the wife of Paul E. Mahoney, Sr. They were married for 52 years. Born in Dexter, ME, a daughter of the late Daniel M. and Florida B. (Pullard) Clukey, she was a life-long Cranston resident. Mrs. Mahoney was a supervisor for 17 years at Metropolitan Life Insurance in Warwick before retiring as an underwriter in 1988. She was a 30 year member of the 3rd Order of St. Francis. She had served as a church organist, Eucharistic Minister, and Lector. Besides her husband, she is survived by seven children, Paul E. Mahoney, Jr. of Miller Place, NY, Lorinda A. Simas of Warwick, Jean M. Lester of Cranston, Charlene M. Storti of Exeter, Joseph E. Mahoney of Andover, CT, David E. Mahoney of Cranston, and Thomas E. Mahoney of East Greenwich; three brothers, Hilary Clukey of Spring Hill, FL, Patrick Clukey and Thomas Clukey, both of Warwick; five sisters, Cecelia McCarthy of Wilbraham, MA, Beverly Vigue of Saco, ME, and Athalie Bascom, Audrey Byers, and Crystal Carney, all of Warwick; twenty grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and fifty-one nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Sinclaire Clukey, Daniel Clukey, Jr., Peter Clukey and Constance Wintle. Her funeral was held on Friday, May 6, at 8:45 AM from the Peter J. Barrett Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Paul Church, One St. Paul Place, Cranston. Visiting hours were Thursday 4-8 PM. Burial was in St. Ann cemetery, Cranston. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to St. Paul Church Memorial Fund, One St. Paul Place, Cranston, RI 02905.

Margery McKenney

SCARBOROUGH - Margery McKenney, 91, of Scarborough, Maine died Saturday, February 19, 2005 at a Portland hospital. Miss McKenney was born in Corinna, Maine, a daughter of Walter A. and Mildred E. Tewksbury McKenney. She received her education in the Corinna Schools and was a graduate of Corinna Union Academy. She also was a graduate of Eastern State Normal School and received her Baccalaureate Degree from Boston University and her Masters Degree from the University of Maine in Orono. She also attended summer schools at Boone, North Carolina, Duluth, Minnesota and Grand Forks, North Dakota. Margery taught in Cape Elizabeth and was Principal in the Lexington, Massachusetts School System. Margery was a member of the Black Point Congregational Church, the Scarborough Friends of the Library, Literary Women’s Union, the Maine Audubon Society, and the Massachusetts Retired Teacher’s Association. A graveside service was held at Nutter cemetery in Corinna, Maine. Those who wish may bring a small geranium plant to the family plot. Margery did this every year for her family. Contributions may be made in her memory to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are by the Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland.

Louise A. Bittner

NEWPORT - Louise A. Bittner, 87, of Newport, died Sunday, May 8, 2005. Born in New Haven, CT on September 10, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Minnie Kreis Heenan. Mrs. Bittner graduated from New Haven Commercial High School in 1935. She worked at Micromatic Industries for many years until her retirement in the summer of 1972. After moving to Maine in 1985 she became active in the local Grange and enjoyed working with children as a volunteer in the Newport school system. She leaves one sister, Margaret Chidsey of North Haven. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard L. Bittner, her son, Richard L. Bittner, Jr., two sisters, Elizabeth Heath and Mary Kohloff; and four brothers, James G. Heenan, Thomas J. Heenan, Jack Heenan and George Heenan. She is survived by two granddaughters, two grandsons, seven great-grandchildren and one great-greatgrandson. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Richard L. Bittner, Jr. Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 40, Newport, ME 04953.

Carole A. Goodridge

CANAAN - Carole A. Goodridge, 63, of Burnham passed away unexpectedly due to an auto accident on May 09, 2005 and she will be sadly missed by all who loved her. She was born on March 06, 1942 in Burnham, the daughter of Manley Sr. and Doris (Henry) Huff. She attended area school and graduated from Maine Central Institute in the class of 1960. She later met and married George W. Goodridge Jr. on August 8, 1965 in Pittsfield. She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant for a number of years and most recently she helped Sarah run the Pittsfield Redemption Center. She enjoyed spending her time with her loved ones and especially her grandchildren, she also enjoyed playing beano, shopping, and playing with her dog Sabra. She is survived by her loving husband George of 39 years, her four daughters, Melissa Johnson and her husband Eric of CT, Rachel Goodridge of Burnham, Heather Goodridge and her partner Mel of CT, Sarah Mitchell and her husband Dave of Pittsfield, four grandchildren, Daniel Johnson of CT, Michael, McKayla and McKenna Mitchell all of Pittsfield, one sister Ruth Cianchette of Burnham, four brothers, Ralph Huff Sr. and his wife Gloria of Burnham, Harry Huff and his wife Frances Huff of Burnham, Roger Huff and his wife Sue of Burnham, Mrs. Manley Huff Jr. (Stella) of Burnham. She is predeceased by her mother and father and a brother Manley Huff Jr. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 13th, 2005 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, Maine, and a funeral service was on Saturday, May 14th, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel, with an internment service to follow at the Huff cemetery in Burnham.

Doreen L. (Young) Glidden

EXETER - Graveside committal services for Doreen Glidden will be held at 1 PM on Friday, May 13th at the Exeter Mills cemetery with Pastor Chris Faloon officiating. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna.

Lena M. Paine

STETSON - Graveside committal services for Lena M. Paine will be held 10 AM Thursday, May 12th at the Riverside cemetery, Newport, with the Rev. George Perkins officiating. Arrangements are by the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Newport.

Jacqueline Mullis

CORINNA - Jacqueline Mullis, 81, passed away April 27, 2005. She was born August 12, 1923 at Sherman Mills, a daughter of George and Pearle (Hamilton) Lane. She graduated from Sherman Mills High School as valedictorian of her class. Jackie married Elwood R. Mullis of Staceyville and moved to Corinna where they raised their family. Jackie’s greatest joy was spending time with her beloved sons and their families. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Elwood, a son, Myron, a daughter, Janice, and a sister, Norma Morgan. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Dalton and Donna Mullis, Brent and Patty Mullis, George and Holly Mullis, and Debbie Mullis, all of Corinna; 10 grandchildren, Brian and wife Liz Mullis of Dover-Foxcroft, Jeff Mullis and Kellie Harris of St. Albans, Jennifer and husband Jon Crosby of Dexter, Matt and wife Danielle Bagley of VA, Brendan, Tristan, Jody, and Sarah Mullis, Joe and Katie Adams all of Corinna; 6 great grandchildren, EmmaRuth, Elijah, Caleb, Madelynn, Jonathan, and Rachel. Jackie also leaves behind many good friends in Corinna and Sherman Mills. Funeral services were held at 10 AM on Monday, May 2nd, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna, with Pastor Matthew Bagley officiating. Following the service, friends and family are invited to Jackie and Elwood’s home on the Corinna Center Road. Interment will be in the family lot in Sherman Mills.

Frank C. Mitchell, SR.

ETNA - Frank C. Mitchell, Sr., 76, died peacefully April 29, 2005 in his sleep at home with his loved ones by his side. He was born May 2, 1928 at Skowhegan, the son of Orie and Respah (Luce) Mitchell. He was educated in Skowhegan and Canaan schools. Frank was employed at the H.P. Hood and W.H. Gorham Companies for many years. He was also a self-employed drywaller and a painter, and loved that the most. Frank enjoyed camping with his wife Barbara, fishing, and hunting - no deer was safe! His greatest love was his family; his six children - whom he loved dearly-each in a special way. He leaves behind his children, Edward M. and wife Jessica Cole of Surry, Virginia B. Fitts of Carmel, Respah H. and husband Allen Graves, Frank C. Mitchell, Jr. and his fiancée Jackie, Martha M. and husband John Parlee, all of Etna, Chavala D. and Michael Lessard of Sullivan; a sister, Sheilia Matthews of Pittsfield; a very special companion, Louise McCutcheon of Etna. He was a special Papa to 17 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews; special friends, Mike and Jennie Young and Billy and Lena McKenney; as well as Nurse Helena. Frank was predeceased by his wife Barbara V. in 2000; 7 brothers, 3 sisters, and a son-in-law, Bruce Fitts, Sr. in 1990. Friends called from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Sunday, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services were held at 2 PM on Monday, May 2nd with the Rev. Matthew Ward officiating. Burial will be in the family lot, Pleasant Hill cemetery, Etna.
