Harold L. Parker

CORINNA - Harold L. Parker, 81, is now driving his Allis Chalmers tractor on the streets of gold, after a short battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. He was born November 1, 1925 in Corinna a son of Lawrence and Linnie (Brown) Parker.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was at the Battle of The Bulge in Germany. He married the love of his life, his wife of 61 years, the former Lurene M. Bryson. Harold was a dairy farmer, and raised two daughters, Cheryl and Coleen. Harold was a member of the Morses Corner Baptist Church, and served as a deacon for many years. He retired from Dexter Shoe Company. Harold and Lurene enjoyed many years spending winters in Florida, then returning to their home in Maine for the summer. He loved to work in his shop, making furniture and toys for his family, tinkering on his tractors, and fixing almost anything that was broken for anyone. He will be sadly missed by wife, Lurene; daughters, Cheryl Parker, Coleen Swan and husband Danny; a sister, Marilyn Conway; grand-daughters Stacey Benge, Suzanne Graves and husband Dale, and Stephanie Swan; grandsons Craig and Marc Boyington and Sebadino Parker; great grandsons, John and Alex Benge, Noah and Tyler Swan, and Garett Graves. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister Muriel Smith, and an infant son, Harold Parker, Jr. Family visiting hours and graveside committal services were held on Saturday, December 9th. Burial was in Morses Corner cemetery, Corinna. James “Bud” MacDonald

NEWPORT - James L. MacDonald, 66, died unexpectedly November 8, 2006 at his Camp Benson Road residence. He was born December 7, 1939 at Murray Road, Prince Edward Island, Canada, a son of John and Mildred (Worden) MacDonald. He attended catholic schools in Canada and graduated from St. Dunston’s Catholic College in Charlottetown, PEI. He was employed at Walpole Woodworkers in Detroit. Bud was a member of the National Rifle Association. He is survived by 2 sons, James “Mike” and wife Lonna MacDonald of Plymouth, Steven MacDonald and companion Dawn Cookson of Newport; a daughter, Teresa Deering and husband Alan of Hartland; a brother, Reginald and wife Patsy MacDonald of Charlottetown, PEI; 2 sisters, Rose and husband Donald Carney of Long Island, NY, Joan and husband Ed Bulger of Corinna; 7 grandchildren, Meagan and Mindy Deering, John, Josh, and Rhonda MacDonald, Josh and Virginia Cookson; 2 great grandchildren, Karmyn Vanadestine and Nathan MacDonald; many nieces and nephews; as well as longtime companion, Annette Batchelder of Newport. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara; brother, Allen MacDonald; and a sister, Julia MacLean. Eleanor (Hart) Normando

NEWPORT - Eleanor (Hart) Normando, 74, died unexpectedly November 7, 2006 at a Pittsfield hospital. She was born January 27, 1932 in St. Albans a daughter of Ernest and Martha (Rice) Hart. She was employed for many years as a school crossing guard and school hot lunch program aide for the Newport schools. Eleanor will be remembered for her arts and crafts; and giving her gifts to the USVA Center in Togus, local churches and the waitresses at Irvings Big Stop Restaurant in Newport. She had also been an avid bowler at the old candle pin bowling lanes in Newport. She will also be remembered for her extensive decorating of her home, inside and out, for every holiday each year. She loved having guests in to see her home festively decorated throughout the first floor. Eleanor is survived by 2 daughters, Nancy and husband Gary Ricker, and Evelyn “Pip” Normando, all of Newport; 1 brother Elbert Hart of Pittsfield; 2 sisters, Lillian Braley of Hartland, Ruth Sylvester and husband Alden of Mars Hill; 1 granddaughter, Shannon Poulin and husband Paul of Monmouth; and a great granddaughter, Rhayna Michelle Poulin; many nieces and nephews; and her adopted family, Barry, Linnea and Joseph Walker of Detroit. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Normando on March 19, 2002; a granddaughter, Michelle Blossom; as well as brothers and sisters: Norman, Evelyn, Hope, Gladys, Carroll, Mary, Paul, Harold, and Kathleen. Marjorie P. Morris

BURNHAM - Marjorie P. Morris 77 a resident of Mount Road died peacefully Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at a Waterville hospital surrounded by her family. Born on June 30, 1929 a daughter of George W. and Lucinda M. (Dewitt) Shakespeare. Mrs. Morris attended Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield and was a stay at home mom for many years. Later in life Marjorie became a Certified Nurses Assistant and was employed by the former Batchelder-Elms Nursing Home in Burnham and also did private duty. Marjorie loved people. The time she spent with her grandchildren gave her family some of the greatest memories that they have of her. She enjoyed flower gardening and a good yard sale. She attended Calvary Baptist Church in Pittsfield for many years and enjoyed being apart of her church family. She was predeceased by her late husband Lyle Norton in 1972, a daughter Shirley Ann Rowell, 1 brother Percy Shakespeare and 1 sister Marion Humphrey. She is survived by her husband of 23 years Edwin (Bud) Morris II of Burnham, 5 children, Janet Nadeau of Pittsfield, Mervin Rowell and his wife Jackie of Pittsfield, Earnie Rowell and his wife Jean of Burnham, Jane Cianchette and her husband Michael of Pittsfield Trudy Vintinner and her husband Ray of Pittsfield, 16 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 1 great, greatgrandchild and 1 great, great granddaughter expecting in February. 2 step children Edwin Morris III of Benton, Tracy Marcoux of Waterville and 2 step grandchildren and 1 sister Dorothy Ramsdell of St. Albans. Visiting hours were held from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday, November 9, 2006 at the Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A funeral service was held at 2 PM Friday, November 10, 2006 at the Calvary Baptist Church, Route 100, Pittsfield with the Reverend Scott Millett officiating. James Nickerson

James Nickerson, 73, of Middleboro MA and Zephyrhills FL died unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 1st, 2006. James was born May 5, 1933 in Corinna, ME to Elwood A. and Inez G. (Pratt) Nickerson. James was preceded in death by his parents Elwood A. and Inez G.(Pratt) Nickerson, sisters Virginia Fillmore of Dexter, Louise Seile of Lee, MA, and a brother Wesley Nickerson of Tampa, FL. James is survived by his wife Karol of the home, his children, Dennis Nickerson and wife Sue of Medway, MA; Beth and husband Paul Bennett of Milford, MA; Heidi Creimmins of Douglas, MA; Peggy Brown of Pawtucket, RI; Nancy Stone of Millis, MA; Kathy and husband Mark Heavner of Holliston, MA; Robin Adams of St. Petersburg, FL; and Sean Barnett of Sarasota, FL. Also Surviving are his brother Earl and wife Eileen Nickerson of St. Albans, ME; sisters Cleona Decrow of Skowhegan, ME; Marie and husband Charles Gallison of Corinna, ME; and Marilyn Hogan of Marlboro, MA; many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. James enjoyed Florida in the winter, and his Morgan Horse farm in Middleboro, MA; fishing, and traveling to Maine in the summer for the Corinna Union Academy Reunion. Eursel G. Mullis

NEWPORT - Eursel G. Mullis, 89, died November 4, 2006 at a Bangor nursing home. He was born August 14, 1917 at Stacyville a son of Charles and Effie (Gerald) Mullis. He attended schools in Stacyville and Houlton. Eursel served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Italy and North Africa, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945. On October 5, 1946, he married the former Arlene Boylan in Newport. Eursel and Arlene recently observed their 60th wedding anniversary. Eursel worked on the family farm until he moved his family to Corinna in 1953. He was employed by Smith Potato Farms for 30 years and was happiest when he was out in the potato fields. He also rogued potatoes for Seth Bradstreet in Newport. During his retirement years, Eursel worked at Bud’s Shop & Save in Newport for 12 years. He was a member of the Corinna American Legion, Meridian Splendor Masonic Lodge in Newport, and the Anah Shrine. He and Arlene had attended the Corinna United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife of Newport, he is survived by 3 children and their spouses: daughter Sharon and her husband Donald Young of Ft. Myers, FL, sons Michael and his wife Nancy Mullis of Corinna, Stuart and his wife Marcia Mullis of Rochester, NH; a sister, Eldora Dow of Perham; 5 grandchildren and their spouses: Kimberly and Wayne Marquis, Renee and Jay Dobson, David and Shauna Young, Jason and Tanya Mullis, Destiny and Bruce Poulin; 8 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Colleen Mullis, Jean Beem, Lorraine Stone and husband Richard, Muriel, Karlene and Linda Boylan; and brother-in-law Lauris Boylan. He was predeceased by 3 brothers, Ronald, Elwood, and Charles, Jr., a son Ronald, and a great grandson Thomas Gerald Dobson. Donal Robert Gannon

PALMYRA - Donal R. Gannon, 76, died in Ireland November 3, 2006 after a brief illness. He was born January 7, 1930 in Portlaoise, Ireland. He was educated in Ireland and came to the United States to complete a Master’s Degree in Industrial Relations. He married his wife Peggy in Chicago, and they relocated to Maine in 1974. As a supervisor in Maine’s Department of Child Support Enforcement, Donal devised a set of guidelines for non-custodial parents that was subsequently adopted virtually nationwide. The family moved to Palmyra in 1977 where, after retiring from the State, Donal and his spouse opened a greenhouse and nursery business, The Shepherd’s Garden, which they ran jointly for 12 years and where he was able to pursue his love of gardening. Donal returned to Ireland in the spring of 2001. He is surveyed by his ex-wife, Peggy, of Palmyra; a daughter, Kristin Larson of Palatine, IL; a daughter, Nancy of Brooklyn, NY; a son Kevin of Tempe, AZ; a son Brendan of Cambridge, MA; three grandsons, Robert and Nathan Krause of Chicago and Benjamin Larson of Palatine, IL; five brothers, Anthony and James of Ireland, Ignatius of Wheathampsted, England; Francis of Philadelphia, PA; and John of Hong Kong; three sisters, Claire Gill and Gertrude Dunne, both of Ireland, and Gabrielle Nahaboo of London; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, William and Patrick, both of Ireland, and a sister who died in childhood. Services and burial took place in Portlaoise, Ireland on November 6, 2006.

Vivian Wright Smith

PITTSFIELD - Vivian Wright Smith, 98, went home to be with the Lord Thursday afternoon, November 2, 2006, at a Pittsfield health care facility, where she had been a resident for many years. She was born May 5, 1908 in New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of Joseph and Nellie Ritchie. In 1924, she married Basil Wright and they lived in Pittsfield for most of their married life. Vivian worked in several Pittsfield area businesses, including the former Dysart‚s Store and the United Store, now known as Reny‚s, where she worked until her retirement. She loved to bake for her grandchildren and was well known as “Nana Wright.” She was a pastor’s wife. She and her husband started the first Pentecostal church in Pittsfield, now known as Deeper Life Assembly, of which she was a member. She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Murphy of Pittsfield; a son and his wife, Milton and Alice Wright of Augusta; 12 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren. Vivian was predeceased by her husband in 1973; 3 grandsons, Berry Wright, Dennis Wright and Richard Murphy; and a granddaughter, Marilyn Melanson. Larry E. Tilton

DEXTER - Larry E. Tilton, 62, died unexpectedly November 1, 2006 at a Bangor hospital. He was born July 5, 1944 at Old Town a son of George and Dorothy (McGray) Tilton. He had been employed at Dexter Shoe in Dexter, Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna, and Bartlett Yarns in Harmony. Larry loved camping and repairing small engines, including lawn mowers, chain saws, and any other gas powered machine. He was also a naturally gifted musician. He could play any musical instrument by ear with only a couple of hours with the instrument. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jean (Reynolds) Tilton of Dexter; 2 sons, Steven and wife Theresa of Carmel, George and wife Kathryn of Hooksett, NH; 2 daughters, Beverly Tilton and companion, Ray Gillo of Waterville, Gail and husband Jeff Merrill of Ripley; 2 brothers, Clinton and wife Connie Tilton of Dexter, Roger Tilton of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Brenda and husband Bob Cooley of Dexter; 6 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren. Lincoln M. Clifford

NEWPORT - Lincoln Merrill Clifford, 85, husband of the late Grace (Frilley) Clifford, died November 2, 2006 at a Pittsfield nursing home. He was born February 24, 1921 at Garland, the son of Edward and Florence (Merrill) Clifford. His mother died after childbirth and Lincoln was raised by his father and stepmother Minnie (Austin) Clifford. He graduated from Garland High School in 1938 and attended Farmington State Normal School. During World War II, he served as a United States Marine in the Pacific Theater. He was among the first group of Marines to go ashore on a Japanese held island. Lincoln spent most of the war in the Marshall Islands and on Palmyra Atoll.
He married Grace (Frilley) in New Bern, NC on November 21, 1942. They were happily married for 58 years. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, Lincoln learned the printing trade and was employed in Maine, Massachusetts and Connecticut. In 1956, he and his family moved back to Maine and he began work at the Bangor Daily News where he worked for over 29 years. He enjoyed ham radio (N1FAX), camping, and traveling throughout the United States and Canada. He held a student’s pilot’s license and was proud of his solo flights. He was associated with the Pittsfield congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Lincoln was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Grace; son, Mark and a sister, Mildred (Clifford) Crawford. He is survived by his twin sister, Florence (Clifford) Timmins of Wakefield, MA; his son and wife, John E. “Jack” and Myrna G. Clifford of Newport; grandchildren and their spouses, Alexander and Tina Clifford of Palermo, Andrew and Heather Clifford of Bangor, Scott and Jennifer (Clifford) Lewis of Gardiner, Kevin and Lisa Purnell of Oakland, and Tharryn and Cheri Smith of Topsham; numerous great grandchildren, including Richard John Clifford; and a special friend, Velma Gallagher of Garland. Friends called from 7 to 8 PM on Friday, November 3rd at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services were held at 8 P.M with Elder Howard Larrabee, Sr. officiating. Dennis L. Carr

CORINNA - Dennis Lawrence Carr, 71, devoted husband of Joyce Hemenway Carr, died October 30, 2006 at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born January 9, 1935 at Dexter, a son of Maurice and Jessie (Page) Carr. Dennis graduated from Dexter High School in 1953. He was employed at Snowflake Canning Co. in Corinna, the Western Auto Store in Dexter, R. B. Dunning Co. in Bangor and S. D. Warren in Hinckley, where he retired in 1992. Dennis was a member of the Corinna United Methodist Church and the Corinna Housing Association where he remained very active. After his retirement, he enjoyed spending winters in Zephyrhills, Florida until he sold his home there due to ill health. In addition to his wife of Corinna; he is survived by one son, Dennis M. Carr and wife Mindy of Lee; 3 daughters, Nannette Donnell and fiancé Sam DeBoe of Carmel, Cynthia Blodgett and husband Chris of Waterville, and Lori Langley and husband Gorden of Corinna; a brother, Clayton Carr and wife Marian of Dexter; 2 sisters, Helen LaCasse of Tavares, FL and Charlene Breton and husband Mike of Dexter; 8 grandchildren, Amy Luce and fiancé Joey Oxley of Levant, Jennifer Cloutier and husband Armand of Newport, Kenneth Luce and wife Rachel of Chesapeake, VA, Sarah Olmsted and fiancé Ryan Ward of Newburgh, Chris Carr and wife Sarah of Brewer, Scott Olmsted of Newport, RI, Corey Harvey and Jason Langley, both of Corinna; 3 great grandchildren, Gavin and Braden Carr of Brewer and Carrson Cloutier of Newport. He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Lynn; 3 brothers, Albert, Lewis and Merle; and a great grandson, Spencer Luce Seeback. Following a family graveside service, burial was on Friday at Mount Pleasant cemetery, Dexter. A public memorial service was held at 2 PM on Saturday, November 4th, at the Corinna United Methodist Church with the Reverend Sharon Lovejoy officiating. Following the memorial service, a luncheon will be served in the annex of the church, celebrating the life of Dennis, who is now one of God’s angels. Merrill Hubbard

HARTLAND - After a long, productive and happy life, Merrill Hubbard, 62, died peacefully on Sunday, October 29th, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer, at his Hartland home with family members by his side. Mel was born in Hartland, ME on March 6, 1944 at Scott Webb Memorial Hospital. He was the son of Edward and Ina (Field) Hubbard. He attended Hartland Academy before joining the United States Air Force and then later, the Army National Guard. He was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force and Army National Guard. He was employed as a truck driver in New Hampshire and Maine for many years. He was last employed by Frank Woodworth Construction in Pittsfield, ME. Mel was a member of the American Legion and Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE). He was an avid race fan, who never missed an opportunity to watch Nascar/Busch Race. He helped many race teams in Maine and New Hampshire. He could often be found in the pits and grandstands of Unity Raceway. He was a dedicated husband, father, and very proud grandfather. He never left home without several pictures of his grandchildren to show to everyone he met. He was also actively involved in their scouting, church and school activities. Besides his parents, Mel was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth Hubbard and Edrie Jean Hall; two nephews, Craig and Kevin Hall; first wife, Alice Ladd; and his brother in-law, Jerry Towle. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years Karlene (Horton) Hubbard, and their daughters Alice Hewins and her husband Bruce; Karla Sisco and her husband James; two grandsons, Brandon Fuller and Brice Hewins; four granddaughters, Harvest and Brooke Sisco and Ashley and Abigail Hewins; a brother Chet Hubbard and his wife Patricia; a sister, Carlene Towle; five nieces, Kelly (Hubbard) Kelley, Loreen (Towle) Pelletier, Carla (Towle) Allen, Denise (Towle) Davidson and Tressa (Towle) Tabares; one nephew, William Hubbard; several great-nieces, nephews, and step-children from both marriages. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 3, 2006 at 1 PM at the Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, ME, an internment service will follow at Pine Grove cemetery, Hartland, ME. William E. Biggar

STETSON - William E. Biggar, 74, died October 17, 2006 at his residence. He was born April 2, 1932 at Portage, Prince Edward Island, Canada a son of Richard and Fanny (Waite) Biggar. He was employed at Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna and Dexter Shoe Company, retiring in 1994. Bill was a member of the Country Music Association. He played the guitar and sang in country bands throughout the state, and started the Frankenstein Show with “Slim” Clark; a predecessor of the Stacey’s Fuel Mart Jamboree. He is survived by his wife, Marguerite of Stetson; a son John and wife Judy L. Biggar of Stetson; 2 daughters, Judy E. Biggar of New Mexico and Joan and husband Vaughn “Lee” Hersey of Virginia; a stepson, Bruce, Sr. and wife Sheila Henderson of Stetson; a stepdaughter, Wanda Torrey of Alaska; 1 brother, Ervin and wife Phyllis Biggar of PEI; 1 sister, Joan and husband Aggno Arsenault of New Brunswick; 4 granddaughters, Jackie, Jill, Jennifer, and Nicole; 1 great grandson Logan; and 4 stepgrandsons, Adam, Alan, Bruce, Jr., and Chad. He was predeceased by 3 brothers, Harry, Clarence, and Clifford Biggar and 2 sisters, Lila Arsenault and Helen MacDonald. Harry Dana Sides

HARTLAND - Harry D. Sides, 78, died Monday October 16th, 2006 at the Dexter Health Care Facility. He was born March 4th, 1928 in Sherman, the son of Montelle W. and Gladys E. (James) Sides. Harry has been a self employed woodsman for most of his life working for various lumbering operations. He has been a resident of Hartland for the past 40 years and previously lived in Sherman. He was a previous member of the Masonic Lodge in Sherman. In 2004, Harry received the Citizen Award from the town of Hartland. It was presented to him by a very special friend, Harry Gould, whom he had mentored as a youth. "The Wisdom and Knowledge You Have Given To Many Of Our Youth Growing Up In the Community Has Not Gone Unnoticed" A son, Steven Douglas Sides, two brothers, Kirk and Odell Sides and a sister Elsie Tyler died previously. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Viola J. (Neal) Sides of Hartland, three sons, Dana Everett Sides of PA, Howard Dean Sides and his wife Geneva of St. Albans, and Montelle William “Boo” Sides and his wife Darlene of Hartland, a daughter, Evelena “Lena” Mae Huffman of Hartland, nine grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, a sister, Jane Humphrey of Wilcott, CT, several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service was held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 21st at the 1st Baptist Church in Hartland. A graveside committal was held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 22nd at the Sherman Mills cemetery.

Virginia Thibault

NEWPORT - Virginia Thibault, 85, of Pineview Apartments, died October 14, 2006 at a Hartland nursing home. She was born October 23, 1920 at Cambridge, Mass. a daughter of Adrian and Mary (Benoit) Desillier. On January 9, 1943 she married Albert “Jerry” Thibault. He predeceased her April 10, 1991. She had been employed as a practical nurse in a mental health institution, Chandler’s Nursing Home in Pittsfield, co-managed the Newport Inn with her husband, and worked at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home in Newport. Virginia was a member of the Newport Women’s Club and worked diligently with the Friends of the Newport Library. She is survived by one son and his wife, Albert “Bert”, Jr. and Anne Thibault of St. Albans; 2 daughters, Carol Thibault of Newport, Mary and husband Joseph Maione of North Attleboro, MA; a niece raised by Jerry and Virginia, Victoria Morrison of Georgia; 2 brothers, Arthur Desillier of Florida, and Adrian Desillier, Jr. of Ellingham, MA; 2 sisters, Rose Ann Knowles of Florida, and Blanche Pecci of Georgia; 3 grandchildren, Erin Brousseau and Joey Maione, both of North Attleboro, MA; and Nicholas Thibault of St. Albans; 1 great grandson, Adam Brousseau. Private arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Newport Cultural Center, 23 Water Street, Newport, ME 04953.

Marjorie Gibbs

ROCHESTER, NH - Marjorie Gibbs, 81, formerly of Highland Street died Wednesday October 11, 2006 at the Sunbridge Living Center after a long illness. Born December 17, 1924 in Burnham, ME she was the daughter of the late Roscoe and Grace (Merritt) Dunton. Mrs. Gibbs has lived in East Rochester, NH since 1947 after moving from Burnham, ME. She worked 20 years at the Hubbard Shoe Co. She was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in East Rochester. She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, lover of God and all of the great animals He gave us. Members of her family include her sisters; Glenys Rines of Pittsfield, ME and Irene Achorn of Benton, ME. A sister in-law, Elaine Crawford of Pittsfield, ME, many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers donations maybe made to the Cocheco Valley Humane Society, County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820. A committal service will be held Tuesday, October 17th at 1 p.m. in the Village cemetery in Pittsfield, ME.
