Lawrence R. Esty

NORRIDGEWOCK — Lawrence R. Esty, 60, of Norridgewock and formerly of Cony Street in Augusta, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, after a short battle with cancer, with his wife, Dawna, at his side.

Larry graduated from Cony High School and joined the Army National Guard before graduating from Thomas College in Waterville with a degree in accounting.

He was employed at Dexter Shoe in Dexter at the time of his death. He enjoyed his job there and had many wonderful friends.

Survivors include his wife, Dawna, of Norridgewock, and four wonderful children, Kim, and her husband, Dale Burnham, of Westbrook, Mike, and his wife, Bonnie, of Gorham, Steve and Robin, of Skowhegan, and Sue, and husband, Bill Angell, of South Portland.

Larry had great fun with his five very special grandchildren, Kady Esty, 8, and brother, Colby, 1, Emalee Esty, 7, and sister, Erin, 2, and Jacob Angell, 2.

He was an athlete in high school and college and loved to play golf. He was a huge New York Giants fan. If you knew him, you liked him.

He was predeceased by his dad, Richard, and brother, Ken.

Survivors also include his mother, Lillian, of Augusta, and a brother, Billy, of Bangor.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. this Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Federated Church, Island Avenue, Skowhegan, officiated by the Rev. Mark Tanner. Arrangements are under the direction of the Smart-Edwards Funeral Home in Skowhegan. Donations may be made in his name to the Skowhegan Area High School Scholarship Fund, c/o Mrs. Sharon Lambert, Business Department, 61 Academy Circle, Skowhegan 04976.

Evelyn L. (Magee) Lemar

SOUTH GARDINER — Evelyn L. (Magee) Lemar, 74, of Sherburne Street, joined her family in heaven on Thursday Nov. 29, 2001. She died at home of cancer, with her family by her side.

She was born in Vassalboro, July 7, 1927, the daughter of Thomas H. and Adelia (St. Hilaire) Magee and attended Chelsea schools.

She worked at shoe shops in the local area. The last one was Commonwealth Shoe in Gardiner, where she worked as a top stitcher until they closed. Then she went into house cleaning and taking care of other people.

She loved to go camping and fishing at the Big Eddie with her family and friends. She loved to go to Togus Pond and sit by the campfire with her grandchildren and their friends. She loved gardening and canning.

She was predeceased by her parents; six brothers, Henry, Alfred, Leo, Alton, Cecil and Raymond; and one sister, Flossie Panek.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann (Gilbert) Grazioso, and her husband, Jerry, of Farmingdale, two grandsons, Deano Grazioso, of Farmingdale, Dean Grazioso, and his wife, Staci, of Augusta; her only granddaughter, Dee Ann Grazioso, of Lakewood, Colo.; a step great-grandson, Jacob Pouliot; her twin sister, Ella Nedik, of Chelsea; a very special nephew, who was the son she never had, Robert Magee, and his wife, Marie, of Hallowell; a very special niece, Shirley Gauthier, and her husband, Andy, of Lewiston, whom she said she adopted as her second daughter and son-in-law; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Evelyn requested no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at St. Joseph's Church, 1 Lincoln Ave., Gardiner, with a gathering to follow in the church hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to HealthReach Hospice P.O. Box 829, 8 Highwood St., Waterville 04901.

Arrangements are in the care of Pine State Cremation Service, Richmond.

Karolina Szewiakow

AUGUSTA — Karolina Szewiakow, 81, of Augusta, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Augusta Rehabilitation Center in Augusta.

She was born in Ternopol, Poland, the daughter of Bizyli and Katizyna Lechman Majtowski.

She was formerly of Marston Road in Gardiner, and was a homemaker and housewife all of her married life. She had been a member of St. Alexander Nevsky Russian Orthodox Church of Richmond.

She was predeceased by her husband, Peter Szewiakow, who died Oct. 20, 1995.

She is survived by her daughter, Ann C. Kowalski, and her husband, Richard, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; her brother, Powel Maslowski, of Woodbridge, N.J.; two grandchildren, Christopher Kowalski, of Marlboro, N.Y., and Kimberly Bazikov, of Moscow, Russia. Two nieces and also other family members in Poland are still surviving.

A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at St. Alexander Nevsky Russian Orthodox Chruch, Middle Street, Richmond, with the Rev. Chad Williams officiating. Burial will be beside her husband in Richmond Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are in the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.

Hubert M. Tibbetts

1924-2002

GREENWICH, Conn. —Hubert M. Tibbetts, 77, a Greenwich resident and former president of the Thomas J. Lipton Corp., died unexpectedly Sunday, June 2, 2002.

A longtime resident of Greenwich, Mr. Tibbetts was the president of Lipton from 1972 to 1987 and its CEO from 1987 to 1988. Prior to joining Lipton, he was executive vice president of Borden and president of its food division. After his retirement from Lipton, he stayed involved in business as a private investor and an active options trader. His business interests included the Greenwich and Stamford taxi companies.

Born on Aug. 24, 1924, in Hallowell, Maine, he was the son of Harold and Zillah Tibbetts.

Before graduating from Harvard University in 1947, Hubert served for three years in the 14th Air Force — the Flying Tigers — in China during World War II. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross.

On graduation he wrote travel articles from Panama, Nicaragua and St. Thomas.

In 1980, he helped the Boys Club of America get support for its 75th anniversary. He also held the position of president of the Tea Council and was a member of the Union League Club, the Manhattan Club and the Burning Tree Country Club.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gunhild Tibbetts, and two children, Lance Tibbetts of Stamford and Kerstin Kapalani of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and two grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Treworgy of Calais, Maine, and Beverly Kline of Del Ray Beach, Fla.; one brother, Paul Tibbetts of Naples, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at noon, Saturday, June 8, at First Presbyterian Church, 18 Lafayette Place, Greenwich.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greenwich, Conn. 06830.

Meredith J. Ambrose

1913-2002

WATERVILLE — Meredith J. Ambrose, 89, of Waterville, passed away Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at a Waterville nursing facility.

He was born July 24, 1913, in Sherman Mills, son of Frank A. and Mattie (Joy) Ambrose. He graduated from Waterville High School, class of 1930. He entered the Army on March 30, 1944, with the 15th Infantry Division, Seventh Army, and served in the European, Middle and Eastern Theatre before being wounded in action. He was honorably discharged Sept. 29, 1945, with the rank of private first class.

In his early years, he managed McLellan Stores and from 1948 to 1977 he was Chief of Prosthetic Service at the Veterans Administration at Togus. He had been retired since 1978 and enjoyed his rural Winslow home. He was an avid gardener.

For more than 20 years he was an active member of Penny Memorial Baptist Church in Augusta, a 50-year member of China Lodge No. 45 AF&AM, life member of the Disabled American Veterans, life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8835 in Winslow and a member of the Waterville NARFE No. 1872.

He was predeceased by his wife, Glenys S. Ambrose, son, Brian B. Ambrose; his siblings, Lewis, Geraldine and Beatrice.

Survivors include a brother, William Ambrose of Titusville, Fla., and Belgrade, and a sister, Glenda Ambrose of Waterville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A visiting hour will be held from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral, Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield, with the Rev. Ron Corey officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville.

Dorothy E. Howard

1906-2002

UNION — Dorothy E. Howard, 95, quietly passed on to her heavenly home Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.

She was born Oct. 6, 1906, in Warren, the daughter of Dwight and Ivah (Lenfest) Cummings. She attended the Union school system.

For 65 years, Dorothy had been a member of the Nazarene Church in Union, where she earned their Distinguished Service Award for her many contributions and was the oldest member of the church.

For 15 years, she owned and operated Howard's Nursing Home in Union.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Angelo Howard, in 1974, following 49 years of marriage, and by a sister, Lois Conant, and brother, Clinton Cummings.

She is survived by daughters, Ivah White and husband, Amos of Gloucester, Mass., and Eileen Howard of Augusta; sons, Dwight Howard and wife, Nancy of Rockport, Robert Howard of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was also a foster mother to many children whom she took into her home.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Hall Funeral Home of Waldoboro with the Rev. Warner Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Union Common Cemetery in Union. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Nazarene Church, Town House Road, Union 04862; or Union Ambulance Service, Union 04862.

Jeanne M. Tanner

1932-2002

AUGUSTA — Jeanne M. Tanner, 70, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta after a long battle with cancer.

She was born July 13, 1932 in Augusta, daughter of Frank and Laura Tavernier, and attended both Augusta and Waterville schools. After graduation from Cony High School in Augusta, she joined the Air Force, which led to a lifelong love of travel. Upon honorable discharge from the service, she married, raised a family, and worked as a secretary and bookkeeper.

Jeanne had a great sense of humor and enthusiasm for life. She was a very warm and open person and enjoyed helping others. Her years as a hospice volunteer in Waterville were especially important to her. She also enjoyed regularly meeting with friends for coffee. She had a broad range of interests, including painting, collecting recipes, reading, working on the computer, and caring for her birds and fish.

She was married for 24 years to her former husband, Thomas Tanner. She is also survived by a daughter, Laura Tanner, and son, Mark Tanner, and grandchildren, Katie and Garrett.

There will be a memorial service this fall to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jeanne's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Geraldine W. Brown

1917-2002

WALDOBORO — Geraldine W. Brown, 85, who died July 31, was also a member of the East Kennebec Pomona (County) Grange. Survivors also include her daughter, Debora Tanner and husband, the Rev. Mark Tanner of Skowhegan, and daughter, Linda Pease and husband, Alan Pease of Warren. The memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, at the United Methodist Church, Tuttle Road, Cumberland.
