Janet Thalia Sprague

DETROIT - Janet Thalia Sprague, 76, passed peacefully Friday, April 20, 2007 at Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield surrounded by her family and friends. She was born October 22, 1930 on Mt. Desert Island in Town Hill, the daughter of Lynwood and Evelyn (Hamilton) Richardson. She was a graduate of Bar Harbor High School. She married Clyde W. Sprague on September 12, 1948 at Town Hill. Janet was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend. She was a member and past president of the Good Cheer Club in Detroit. Janet was an avid gardener and managed a home greenhouse business with her husband for many years where she enjoyed interacting with the public. Her hobbies and interests include: painting, knitting, quilting, baking, and caring for and spending time with her family and friends. Janet is survived by her husband of 58 years Clyde W. Sprague Sr. of Detroit, her five children and their spouses, Clyde and Nancy Sprague of Attleboro, MA, Diane and Philip Melanson of Plymouth, Denise and Ronald Lowe of Augusta, Montana, Richard and Susan Sprague of Bucksport, Dwayne and Anne Sprague of South Portland, her sister and husband Marjorie and Robert Haggard of Manchester, NH, her brother and wife, Brian and Ellie Richardson of Mount Desert, twelve grandchildren and their spouses: Darcey and Victor LaPrade, Derek Melanson, David and Billie Melanson, Nicole and Patrick Boulay, Bridget Sprague, Billy Landenberger, Daniel Lowe, Kriston Lowe, Joanna Sprague, Jeffrey and Christine Morrison, Kenneth and Christina Morrison, Erica and Dean Leighton, Kathryn Sprague, twelve great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Janet was a gentle soul with a kind and generous spirit who forever touched the lives of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed. Private graveside services will be held June 1, 2007 at the Detroit Village cemetery. Friends who wish may make donation, in lieu of flowers, to the Pine Tree Camp for Children and Adults. Reverend John S. Bennett

PLYMOUTH & HAMPDEN - Reverend John Bennett, 77, died April 24, 2007. Family visitation will be private. A memorial service was held at 2 PM on Saturday, April 28th at the Emmanuel Bible Baptist Church in Plymouth with the Reverend Robert Emrich officiating. Erwin E. "Moose" Edgecomb

DEXTER - Erwin E. "Moose" Edgecomb, 61, died April 13, 2007, at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. He was born February 15, 1946, in Limestone, son of James and Gertrude (Burgess) Edgecomb. He worked at Dexter Shoe Company for 17 years and later worked at Hartland Tannery for several years until his retirement He was a past member of the IOOF Lodge #65 in Dexter. Erwin was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and 4-wheeling, which he enjoyed with his friends the Perkins family. He also loved draft horses and horse pulling. He is survived by 4 sisters, Doris Hartford and her husband, Ronald of North Dexter, Betty Tremblay and her husband, Charles of Newport, Brenda Watson of Sangerville and Cindy Simonds and her friend, John Reynolds of Corinna; special sister-in-law, Beverly Edgecomb of Dexter; many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew and his wife, Michael and Tina Tremblay of Newport, who were also his caregivers during his illness; and many special friends. He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters, Mary Chabot and Sarah Levasseur; 2 brothers, Sonny, and James. A celebration of his life as held at 2 PM on Thursday, April 19, 2007 at Crosby & Neal, 61 Main Street, in Dexter, with Pastor David Ray Sr. officiating. Friends called from 1 PM until the time of the service. Burial will be later in the spring at Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Dexter. .

Harry Glen Garrison

TOLEDO, OHIO - Services were held for Harry Glen Garrison, 76 of Toledo, Ohio, formerly of Newport, ME, who died early Sunday morning, April 8th, in his home. Born September 11th, 1930 in Corinna, ME, he was the son of Harry Glen and Marguerite Mae (Briggs) Garrison. Services were held April 12, 2007 at Capaul Funeral Home, Ida, Michigan, the Reverend Albert Nelson officiating. He attended Newport schools and worked in construction with his father, A veteran of two tours in the U.S. Army. He married Marion Turk, June 27th, 1971 in Angola, Indiana and drove truck for Downriver Brick Company and Flat Rock Catering in 1999. Surviving are his wife, Marion, sons Harry Glen II of Ida, Michigan, Dale Roberts of Swanton, daughters, Toni (Mitch) Billau of Ottawa Lake and Tracy (Wayne) Schuyler of Dunder, two sisters, Betty Reckards of Rockwood, ME and Barbara (Harold) Fletcher of Newport, ME, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister Anna Louise Hunnewell of Yarmouth, ME.

Thomas F. Caluri

STETSON - Graveside committal services for Thomas F. Caluri will be held at 3 PM on Friday, April 27th, at Clark’s Hill cemetery, Stetson, with the Reverend Fr. Richard McLaughlin officiating. Following the service a reception will be held at the Caluri home. The family requests that those attending the service arrive at the residence at 2:30 PM in order to proceed to the cemetery in procession. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport.

Jennie E. Lundberg

PITTSFIELD - Jennie E. Lundberg 89 went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, April 3, 2007 at her Pittsfield home following a long illness. She was born in Boston, MA on December 30, 1917 the daughter of John and Jesse (Renie) McGee. She was a graduate of Dorchester, MA High School. She was married to Roy B. Lundberg who died in 1958. She was employed as an office worker at several businesses in MA for many years. Jennie had a great love for her family. She loved to take walks, bake for, and play “upwords” with her family and friends. She taught Sunday school for over thirty years while in MA. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hartland. She loved reading the word of God, worshipping with her church family, and witnessing to others by giving out many gospel tracts and daily breads. She is survived by and will greatly missed by her sons; Richard Lundberg and his wife Linda of Racine, WI, David Lundberg and his wife Genny of Plymouth, Dennis Lundberg of Pittsfield who she made her home with for many years, five grandchildren; David Lundberg an wife Vesna, Dan Lundberg, Debbie Schneider and husband Jeff, Lisa Lundberg, Joy Bickford and husband Bruce, two great grandchildren, Hannah Bickford and Nicky Lundberg, several nieces, nephews, and many friends. Five brothers predeceased her. Memorial services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Hartland. Gary “Grasshopper” Merrill

HARTLAND Gary Clayton Merrill, 59, died peacefully February 28, 2008 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Gary was known as “Grasshopper” to his friends and co-workers. He was born June 28, 1948 at Middleton, CT, a son of Clayton and Anna (Vining) Merrill. He grew up in Deep River, CT and graduated from Valley Regional High [Deep River], Class of 1968. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. Gary moved to Maine in 1978 where he was a talented welder, employed by various construction companies in the northeast. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, working in his garage and around his home. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Vanessa (Moran) Merrill of Hartland; 3 daughters, Tiffany Dodge and husband Ricky Jr. of St. Albans, ME, Rhonda Merrill and companion Richard Lawler, Jr. of Plymouth, ME, Melanie Isabelle and husband Stephan of Norton, VT; a very special sister, Sharon McCann and husband John Michael McCann of Deep River, CT; 2 grandchildren, Erik and Shayna Isabelle; an uncle, Clifford Vining and wife Thelma of Newport, ME; two aunts, Helen Springer and husband Lawrence of North Berwick, ME, and Jackie McCourtney and husband Paul of Rockwood, ME; many nieces, nephews and cousins He was predeceased by his parents, aunt Shirley (Merrill) Warren, and Uncle Clifford Merrill. Darlene R. Hewins

HARTLAND - Darlene R. Hewins, 62, passed away on Saturday, March 1st at St. Joseph's Hospital in Bangor, Maine. She was born on March 13, 1945 in Hartland, Maine, the daughter of Walter T. Hewins and Celia E. Hewins. After growing up in Hartland, she lived in Waterville, Livermore Falls, Livermore, Chesterville, Newport, and Skowhegan, eventually settling back in Hartland. She was known for her loving service, both in her personal life and in a variety of occupations from "Miss Melinda" at the Norlands living history farm in Livermore to running her own gift shop in Newport. After raising a son with her former husband, Richard H. Heald, she earned a business degree from the University of Maine in 1994. During her long battle with debilitating rheumatiod arthritis, her positive, caring attitude was a true inspiration to those who knew and loved her. She is survived by her son, Dick T. Oliver of Wilton, NH, granddaughters Erica C. Oliver and Ona R. Oliver, her mother Celia E. Hewins of Hartland, ME, and twelve siblings: Coral Hewins of Oakland, Wesley Hewins of Hartland, Vernon Hewins of Hartland, Walter ("Gene") Hewins of Waterville, Deloris Adams of Glenburn, Dwight Hewins of Connecticut, Donna Hewins of Hartland, Wayne Hewins of Hartland, Gail Burke of Etna, Ronald Hewins of Newport, Alan Hewins of Burnham, and Lois Hewins of Pittsfield, as well as many beloved family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 15th, 2008 at 3 PM in the Hartland Consolidated School Cafeteria, with a time of reflection and refreshments to follow.

Spencer E. Larsen

NEWPORT Spencer E. Larsen, 84, husband of Grace (McFarland) Hudson Larsen, passed away on February 28th, 2008 from this life to the next to be with our Lord and his beloved wife Grace, who passed away January 5, 2008. He was born May 8, 1923, the third son of Niels and Anna (Ewander) Larsen. He spent most of his early life in California. Spence enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1943 and spent time in France during World War II. He married his first wife, Janet Middleton, on September 7, 1953, and they had 2 children, Steven Larsen (and his wife Janice Larsen) of Florida and Linda Larsen of California. Spence worked at McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach, CA, where he met Grace. They were married at the Brewster Inn in Dexter, Maine. They both returned to California to continue working and later retired after 25 years. In addition to his son and daughter, Spence is survived by 2 brothers, Wesley Larsen and his wife Beverly of Downey, CA and Alvin and his wife Miriam of Salt Lake City, Utah. He also leaves behind his daughter Debra Lovley and husband Gregory of Newport, 2 sons, Scott Hudson and his wife Lynn of Plymouth, and David Hudson of Pittsfield; grandson, Jason Lovley and his wife Kim of Carmel; granddaughter, Breeanna Lovley of Lake Worth, FL; 3 great grandchildren, Noah Matthew Lovley, Nicholas James Lovley and Ava Grace Lovley, all of Carmel; a very special granddaughter, Jackie Cook of Stetson; grandson, Christian Gregory Brown of Hartland; granddaughter Amy Butts and her husband Donald and their 2 children, Drew and Isaac, all of Carmel; many nieces, nephews, and loving friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Franklin Larsen who passed away February 26, 1928 at the age of ten. The family wishes to thank Sid and Carol Gray for all their love and support, and for standing by Spencer everyday until his passing. In accordance with his wishes, private visitation will be held at Crosby & Neal, Newport. Spring military committal and graveside services will be held at Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Dexter, with Pastor Al H. Worden and the honor guard from Ft. Devens, MA officiating. Spence and his wife Grace will be laid to rest side by side at 10 AM, Saturday, May 10th. Ernest “Red” Paradis

NEWPORT & PALMYRA Ernest Percival Paradis went home to the Lord on February 23, 2008. He died peacefully at his home in Palmyra with his family at his side following a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born June 13, 1934 in Corinna a son of Emile and Clarissa (Metivier) Paradis of Corinna.
He grew up in Newport and attended Newport schools. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He worked at Guilford Woolen Mill in Newport for 10 years and at H.P. Hood and Sons in Newport for 17 years. He moved to Waterville and cared for special needs children, whom he loved and cared for from his home. Ernest also owned and operated the Newport Pool and Bowling Alley in Newport and a carpet business in Newport for a time. After retiring, he worked for the late Les Lovley and son Greg Lovley, and Tom and Linda Walsh. They were great friends and spent many good times in Maine and Florida. He loved all of his family and friends dearly, including special friends Dave and Bill Jarvis. He was a member of Meridian Splendor Lodge AF & AM, a past member of the Barrows-Skidgel Post American Legion, and belonged to the Pittsfield Elks Lodge.
He liked hunting, fishing, poker, and horse racing.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to all the doctors, nurses, and hospice in Waterville, especially Holly, Mark, Paul, Julie Ann, Betty and Martin who provided wonderful care during his illness. Ernest wanted to thank his friends and family for their prayers, visits and calls during his final days.
He resided in Palmyra with his wonderful companion Juanita Sargent whom he loved dearly, and is also survived by a brother, Tim and wife Carole Paradis of Corinna; sisters, Dee Terrio of Newport and Nancy Bellfleur of Pittsfield; aunt Jane Allen of Newington, CT; his first wife and dear friend, Lillian Sawyer of Corinna; 5 nephews, Tim and Ronnie Paradis, both of Newport, and Scott Paradis of Corinna, Steven Welch of Newport and Bruce Welch of Pittsfield; 4 nieces, Tina Peppard, Lisa Dunphy, Brenda Welch and Debi Welch-Tibbetts, all of Pittsfield; several cousins and many friends. He was predeceased by his baby brother, Philip in 1932.
A graveside funeral and military committal service will be held 11 AM Tuesday, April 29th, at Corinna Village cemetery with the Rev. Carl Engstrom and the Air Force Honor Guard conducting the services. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. Al E. Cooper

Dover-Foxcroft Al E. Cooper, 65 of Olive Hill Road, Dover-Foxcroft, formerly of Auburn, passed away on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at his home.
He was born in Lewiston, May 25, 1942 the son of Robert M. and E. May Williams Cooper. He was educated in local schools and was married to Mary Fisher for 47 years. He was employed as a supervisor at the Penobscot Job Corp in Bangor. He was a member of the Fellowship Church in Greene and the N.R.A. and enjoyed skeet shooting and special times spent at camp, but his favorite pastime of all was motorcycle riding.
He is survived by his wife Mary of Dover-Foxcroft; a daughter, Lori Merrifield and husband Chet of Steep Falls; a son, Gary Cooper and wife Kelly of Dover-Foxcroft; 6 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; his mother, E. May Cooper of Brunswick; two sisters, Lorraine Additon of Auburn and Christina Gauthier of Ohio; three brothers, Andrew Cooper and wife Donna of Lisbon Falls, David Cooper and wife Elaine of Auburn and Eddie Cooper and wife Vickie of Texas; his mother-in-law, Alice Fisher of Lewiston; 3 sisters-in-law, Geneva Laplante and husband Lou of Lewiston, Jennie Herrick and husband Lin of Lewiston and Linda Thibodeau and husband Lucien of Auburn.

John Kurro

PALMYRA & NEWPORT John Kurro, 79, passed away Sunday evening, February 24, 2008 at the Sebasticook Valley Hospital. John was born December 13, 1928 in the Bronx, New York.
Brought up in the Bronx, John graduated from Amityville High School in 1946. After graduating, he and his close friend “Gunner” toured the United States on motorcycles. He entered the United States Air Force in 1950. John was a member of the 492nd Bomb Squadron, 7th Bomb Wing and member of the Air Force Gunner’s Association. He served 4 years in the Air Force as an aerial gunner on the B-36 Peace Maker, and was stationed in England, Fort Worth, Texas, and Loring AFB in Limestone, Maine. John was also a journeyman machinist.
John met and married Joan Welsh March 19, 1955, in Long Island, New York. They lived on Long Island until 1972 and moved to Palmyra where John and Joan purchased and ran the famous Gateway Restaurant and Lounge in Newport. John and Joan retired from the restaurant business in 1991. John was a member of the American Legion, Bangor Elks Lodge Number 244, Meridian Splendor Masonic Lodge Number 49, the Anah Shrine in Bangor and the Tri-County Shrine Club where he was awarded the “Noble of the Year” Award in 1979.
He is pre-deceased by his brother, Elmoth and is survived by his wife Joan and three daughters, Lynda Woloss and her husband Bob of York Harbor; Kristine Kurro of Palmyra; Carolyn Kurro of Louisville, KY; three grandchildren, Dylan and Dana Andrews and Otto Shorey; nephew Alan Kurro and his wife Robin and their children, Hope Jacobson and her husband Randy, and Eian and Liza Kurro; nieces Dawn Bates and husband Drew of Long Island, NY; and Valerie Ferrara and husband Nelson of Long Island, NY.
Friends called from 5 to 8 PM Wednesday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services were held at 10 AM Thursday, February 28th with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Spring burial will be in the Palmyra Village cemetery.

Henri J. Lacasse

PITTSFIELD - Henri J. Lacasse, 89, died peacefully, February 12, 2008 at his son’s residence, surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born in St. Aurelie, Canada, on August 16, 1918, the son of the late Ernest and Delina Lacasse.
He started his logging career at the age of 13 in Canada. He came to Maine in 1971 and continued logging until he was 72. He used ponies for woodcutting and started pony pulling at local state fairs. He won several trophies and ribbons at these events, which he was extremely proud of. He would beam with pride each time he won and couldn’t wait to let all know. His beloved pony, Jenny, was with him at many of these events for over 15 years. Henri was a generous man with a huge heart and would help anyone in need.
He is survived by his son, Shawn Lacasse and his wife, Jamie, and their children, Korrie and Shawn II, of Pittsfield; his daughters, Tina Murray and her children, Mikayla and Kierra, Judy Frost and her husband, Dave, and their children, Danielle and Jeff; daughter, Debbie Currier and her husband, Donald, and their daughter, Ashley; his sons, Mike Bennett and his wife, Donna, and their children, Matt and Jessie, Rusty Bennett and Bobby Bennett; and a long-time companion, Marilyn Merrill of Pittsfield.
He is also survived by these sons and daughters, Jean-Noel Lacasse, Gilles Lacasse and Rejeanne Renault, Yvon Lacasse and Gisele Gilbert, Huguette Lacasse and Louis Paquet, Bertrand Lacasse, Jocelyne Lacasse, Renald and Anne Lacasse, Andre and Julie Lacasse, Alain and Jo-Ann Lacasse, Clemence Lacasse and Henri Toulouse, Mario Lacasse and Raymonde Garant, Guy Lacasse and Bridgette Gosselin, Sylvie Lacasse and Bruno Champagne, Nancy Lacasse and Mario Fortin; sisters, Alida Lacasse and Elise Grenier.
He was predeceased by his wife, Henriette; his children, Roland Lacasse and Suzie Lacasse; his sisters and brothers, Rose-Anna Morin and her husband, Lucien, Julia Rodrique and her husband, Euchariste, Therese Lacasse, Marie-Irene Lacasse and her husband, Edouard Maheux, Florence Lacasse and Laurent Larochelle, Andre Lacasse, Fortuna Lacasse, Benoit Lacasse, Maurice Lacasse, and Adrien Giroux.
Henri will be fondly remembered by special friends, Red Devereux and Althea Levefque, Missy, Sharon McNally, Charlie hall, Fred McGraw, Bob Menzel, Alex Rizza I, and Dave Raye.
A special thanks to Dr. Penny DeRaps who took loving care of Henri for many years, Sebasticook Valley Hospital and all the nurses who provided excellent care, and to Hospice and their nursing staff.
A funeral service was held in Canada, and a spring burial will take place in St. Aurelie cemetery.
Arrangements were entrusted to Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, ME.

Gregory P. Ivory

WATERVILLE - Gregory P. Ivory, 56, died Monday, Feb. 11, at a local hospital after a long illness. He was born in Waterville on Oct. 12, 1951, the son of Bessie and James Ivory, Sr.
Gregory graduated from Winslow High School and, before his illness, was employed at the Villager Restaurant in Waterville.
He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Alvera Kneeland; and a brother Robert Ivory.
He is survived by his brother James Ivory, Jr. and his wife, Jeanne, of Plymouth; a brother, Gary Ivory, and his wife, Paula, of North Weymouth, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Ivory of North Attleboro, Mass. and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be private with a burial in the spring. Arrangements will be made by Redington Funeral Home.
