Velma F. Gallagher

GARLAND - Velma F. Gallagher, 84, died February 14, 2008 at her residence. She was born March 6, 1923 in Corinth, a daughter of Earl Goodwin and Myrtie (Goss) Goodwin Tracy. She worked for the State Unemployment Office and the Levinson Center both in Bangor. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Dexter and the Garland Grange since 1937. Velma is survived by 3 sons, Thomas Wyman of Biddeford, Timothy Washburn of Garland, and Mark and wife, Durice Washburn of Corinth; a daughter, Carlena and husband, Kendall Bean of Corinth; a stepson, Phillip Washburn of CT; a stepdaughter, Joan Tilton of Bangor; a sister, Carolyn Duckart of CA; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Ralph Gallagher, and a sister, Maple Bridge. There will be no public calling hours. Spring graveside services will be held at Evergreen cemetery, Garland. Garfield S. Watson

PALMYRA - Garfield S. Watson, 71, died February 14, 2008 at a Bangor hospital He was born November 5, 1936 in Wallagrass, a son of Leland and Auora (Caron) Watson. He attended Corinna Union Academy and served in the U. S. Army. He was employed for over 25 years at Irving Tanning Company in Hartland and was also self-employed as a locksmith and small engine repairman. Garfield was a member of the Church of Christ in Newport. He is survived by a son, Steven and wife, Marie Watson of Jamaica, NY; a daughter, Diane Billington of Biddeford; 3 sisters, Edna and husband, Ronald Chase of Durham, Darlene and husband, Hugo Frati, and Bernice “Bunny” and husband, Jack Quirk, all of Hampden; 7 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Leland Watson, Jr. Friends called from 2 to 4:30 PM on Monday, February 18th at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services were held at 7 PM Monday. Spring burial will be in the Palmyra Village cemetery. Garfield’s family wishes to thank Sherri Clifford for her loyal and dedicated commitment to our father. .

Nancy Louise Clark

KENDUSKEAG - Nancy Louise Clark, 67, died peacefully Feb. 21, 2008, at her home. She was born June 26, 1940, in Old Town, the daughter of Joseph G. and Marguerite S. (Jameson) Currier. She had many fond memories of operating the Dixmont Snowmobile Club. She enjoyed camping in the north woods of Maine. She had fun doing ceramics. More than anything, she loved her family dearly and will be sadly missed. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Linwood Clark of Kenduskeag; sons, James Robinson and wife, Leatha, of Levant, Bryant Betts and wife, Barbara, of Newburg, Linwood Clark II of Kenduskeag and Wayne Archie and companion, Lisa, of Milford; daughters, Pam Bickford and companion, Dennis Smith, of Kenduskeag and Valorie Dunton and husband, Mike, of South Carolina; an aunt, Sylvia Gauthier of Old Town; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Currier of Addison, many grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many close friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Brenda Welch; and a brother, John Currier. Services will be private for the family. Gifts in her memory may be made to the American Heart Association, Maine Affiliate, 343 Gorham Road, South Portland, ME 04106. Arrangements by Memorial Alternatives, Bangor.

Martelle C. Quint

PITTSFIELD - Martelle C. Quint died on February 9, 2008, at his home on Madawaska Ave after an extended period of ill health. He was tenderly cared for by family members during his final days.
Marty was born November 30, 1924 in North New Portland, Maine, son of Martelle C. Quint and Georgie (Ronco) Quint Webb.
The young family moved to Pittsfield during the Great Depression. Marty graduated from MCI in 1943, where he excelled in sports and became known for his encyclopedic memory of every sports figure and sporting event.
He was drafted into the US Army a week after high school graduation and served in the European Theater. At war’s end he toured Europe as a member of the army’s exhibition basketball team. He was discharged with the rank of Sergeant in the Quartermaster Corps.
In 1950 he obtained a degree in Business Administration from the University of Maine with the help of the GI Bill.
Marty married Mary Dysart, of Pittsfield, in 1953 and began a propane gas business which became known as Mid State Gas. He was a Little League, Babe Ruth and American Legion baseball coach, and refereed basketball throughout many communities surrounding Pittsfield.
Marty lived a fine, long life and was predeceased by his parents as well as his stepfather Abel Webb, his brother Bobby Webb, and sister Arlene Quint Gordon. He is survived by Mary, his wife of 54 years, and sisters Marie Quint Merrithew, Jeanette Webb Fitts, and Maggie Webb Lowell and her husband Vaughn. Marty and Mary had seven children. They are Stephen and his wife Valerie of Brooklyn, New York; Tom, Susan and her partner Rich Poulin, David and his wife Patricia, all of Pittsfield; Nancy and her partner Kelly Wood of Windham; Janet and her husband Keith Sanford of Old Town; and Douglas and his partner Bryan Petroff of New York City. His grandchildren are Maggie, Lucy, Arlo, Amber, Tyson, Lauren, Garrett, Amy, Amanda, Lizbeth, Marty, Victor, and Mia; great-granddaughter Hope, and he also has numerous nieces and nephews.
He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports and music events and was an avid sports fan; he and his wife traveled the country to attend Frozen Four ice hockey championships. The Quints spent many wonderful summers at the family camp on Sibley Pond as well as by the pool at their home. He was well known as a practical joker with a wry sense of humor. Marty will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A joyful celebration of his life was held at the Pittsfield’s Masonic Lodge on Hamilton Drive Friday, February 15th, 2008, at 3 PM.

Harvey L. Burnham

CORINNA - Harvey Leland Burnham, 84, died February 1, 2008 at a Pittsfield nursing home. He was born May 22, 1923 in St. Albans a son of Myron and Caroline (Tyler) Burnham. He graduated from Corinna Union Academy and served in the U. S. Army as a glider pilot during World War II. He was a member of the Shirley B. Carter Post VFW and was a former member of the American Legion and the Corinna Grange. Harvey was also a licensed pilot. He had worked at Banton Brothers Mill in Newport and retired from Walpole Manufacturing in 1993. He will also be remembered as a longtime Boy Scout leader in Corinna. Harvey and his wife, Marjorie (Bennett) celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Christmas Day 2007. In addition to his wife of Corinna, he is survived by 2 sons, Leland and wife Shawn Burnham of Cardville, Lloyd Burnham of Corinna; a daughter, Linda and husband James Stevens of Stetson; 12 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren. Friends called from 4-8 PM Monday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. A graveside funeral and committal service was held 1 PM Thursday, May 22nd. at the Nutter cemetery, Corinna. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation, 80 Elm Street, Portland, ME 04101. .

Harlow E. Powers

HARTLAND - Harlow E. Powers, 81, died February 2, 2008 at Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield. He was born September 23, 1926, in St. Albans, son of Ernest and Myrtle (Philbrick) Powers. He was raised through his formative years by his loving step father, Alonzo Williams, with whom he worked through the age of 29. He graduated from Hartland Academy, class of 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1947 and was a graduate of the U.S. Navy Hospital Corp in Bainbridge, Maryland. Harlow married Ruth Fox in a candlelight ceremony on December 11, 1948 and they remained sweethearts throughout their 59 years together. He worked for H.C. Baxter Canning Co. and then for Walpole Woodworkers in Detroit, ME for his very special brother-in-law Levi Peterson for 12 years.
Harlow then worked for the U.S. Post Office as a rural mail carrier in the communities of St. Albans, Hartland, Pittsfield and Limerick for 30 years until his retirement. During this time he was an active member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association, where he rose to the position of State Steward representing Maine members through the federal office in Washington D.C. He was also a very active and respected leader in the community through a wide range of activities. He was a member, Past Master and former Secretary of the Masonic Lodge in Hartland. He was also a member of the Anah Temple Shrine. He was a long-time member of the Lions Club where he served as King Lion and Zone chairman. Harlow was a member of the Grace Linn Memorial Methodist Church where he served as Treasurer for the past 10 years. Harlow also served as a leader in supporting the local Hartland charity The Food Cupboard. In addition, he was a member of the Scott Webb Medical Center board on which he served as President of the board for many years. In later years, he was responsible for leading the reopening of the Scott-Webb Medical Center, which is now a thriving service to the community. For the past 10 years, he proudly served the town of Hartland as selectman and servant of his community as a way of giving back to his friends and local residents. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Powers of Hartland; son Randy Powers and his wife, Kaye of Roanoke, TX, daughter Kathy Nichols and her husband, Harvey of Walterboro, SC; sister, Evangeline Gray and her husband, Philip of FL; 5 grandchildren, Matthew, Travis, Shannon, Traci, Staci, and several great grandchildren; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law including a special sister-in-law, Ida Briggs of Hartland; several nieces and nephews including a special niece, Karen Parke. He was predeceased by brothers-in-law Clifford Merrill, Dr. Paul Briggs, and Frank Jordan; sister-in-law Mary Fox; and recently by his close friend, Clair Russell. Harlow requested a very special thank you to be expressed for his compassionate care to Dr. Openshaw, Kay Hunter RN, Dr. Cavanaugh, and all the nurses at Sebasticook Valley Hospital. Friends called at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street in Newport from 2 to 4, and 6 to 8 PM Wednesday, February 6, 2008, where Masonic services were held at 7 PM. Funeral services were held at 5 PM Thursday at the Hartland Community Center with the Reverend Paul Briggs officiating. A private service will also be held at the Grace Linn Memorial church prior to the funeral. Spring burial will be in the Maloon cemetery in St. Albans. Nancy Lee Woodard

DEXTER - Nancy Lee Woodard, 56, died Jan. 30, 2008, at a local Bangor hospital, after a short illness. She was born April 28, 1951, in Greenville, the daughter of Manzer J. and Geneva (Cummings)Woodard. During her life, Nancy enjoyed animals, singing and meeting people. She is survived by her sister and longtime caregiver of 26 years, Leola Pearl of Dexter; sisters, Audrey Bickford, Althea Wheaton, Betty Hazellet and Joyce Davis; brother, Roger Woodard, all of Dexter; a brother, David Woodard; many nieces, nephews and extended family, who will miss her. She will be greatly missed by the many friends of Charlotte White Center, Dover, and Sebasticook Elders Program, Pittsfield. A special thanks to her care providers for the past two years, Paula and Bill Chadwick of Stetson; and her friend, Susan. Graveside services will be held in the family lot in the spring at Mount Pleasant cemetery, Bangor. Friends may make donations in Nancy's memory to the Bangor Humane Society. Lewis P. Elliott

HARTLAND - Lewis P. Elliott, 78, died, where he loved most, on Huff Hill Road, “the otherplace”, Saturday, February 2, 2008. He was born in Hartland on August 25, 1929, the son of Harry and Sadie (Emery) Elliott. He attended Hartland Academy and served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict. He began his employment at the age of 13 in the logging camps. He was employed by the Baxter Snowflake Canning Company in Hartland, the local shoe shops, the State of Maine, and ended his working career as a millwright/carpenter. He was a member of the Corinthian Lodge #95 AF & AM. He married Arlene Monroe in 1950 and together they raised three children. He loved and cherished his family. He made life-time friends of his co-workers. He taught his children and grandchildren to hunt, fish, garden, never to pass judgment, and to always help the less fortunate. He is survived by his loving wife, Arlene, of 57 years; three children, Dorothy Humphrey and her husband, Daryl, of Hartland, Deborah Elliott of Portland, and Lewis H. Elliott and his wife, Cathy, of Hartland; five grandchildren, Brandon, Sean and his girlfriend, Kellie Cobb, and Ryan Humphrey, of Hartland, Jamison King, of Scarborough, and Gretchen Elliott and her fiancé’, Ray Lane, of Hartland; two brothers, Alton and his wife, Dorothy of CA, and Weston and his wife, Charlotte, of Canaan, and a sister, Lorraine Post and her husband, Wesley, of St. Albans. He was predeceased by a brother, Edwin Elliott; two sisters, Eva Elliott and Hilda Viles, and a grandson, Jared Elliott. A celebration of life will be held from 1 - 4 PM, Sunday, February 17th, at the Detroit Snowmobile Night Drifters Club, Route 220, Detroit, where friends are invited to enjoy food, refreshments, and share stories of times spent with Lewis. “Goodnight, I love you all, including my many adoptees, ” Love, Lew, Dad, Gramp, and Uncle. James H. Work

JACKSON - James H. Work, 87, of Becker Avenue, Riverside, died peacefully on January 27, 2008 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. He was the husband of the late Thelma T. (Gregory) Work. James was born and raised in Jackson, Maine until the age of 26, a son of the late Harry C. and Maude (Webb) Work, he later lived in Riverside, RI for 61 years. Upon moving to RI, James worked for Hood’s Dairy as a driver, and Crandall’s Dairy. He later was a machinist for the former Leesona Corp. for 17 years before retiring in 1985. James was a member of the Barrington Baptist Church and also was a custodian at the church for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Mr. Work was a United States Army Air Force Veteran serving in the 8th Air Force in England as a B-17 gunner during World War II. His bomber was shot down over the English Channel by enemy fire. He was wounded and rescued by British allies to later recover in England. He is survived by two sons; James G. Work of Cairo, Egypt and Paul D. Work of Barrington, a daughter; Leanne Ayotte of Riverside, a sister; Barbara Grover of Dixmont, Maine and 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters, Floyd, Ralph, Hervey, Paul, Carolyn, Cristol, Margaret, and Sadie. His funeral was held on Saturday, February 2, 2008 from the W. RAYMOND WATSON FUNERAL HOME, 350 Willett Avenue, Riverside, RI at 9:45 a.m. with a funeral service in Barrington Baptist Church, Old County Road, Barrington, RI at 11 a.m. Burial with Military Honors followed in Gate of Heaven cemetery. Calling hours were Friday 4-8 p.m.

Frances H. Beach

PITTSFIELD - Frances H. Beach, 70, died unexpectedly, on Thursday, January 10th, 2008. She was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on January 5th, 1938, the daughter of Leo and Helen (Fuglestad) O’Brien. Frances graduated from Braintree High School with the class of 1956. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Club in Pittsfield and in Hartland. She enjoyed BINGO, line dancing and she loved to bowl and had belonged to several leagues. She enjoyed taking trips to the coast with her close friend, Louise Baker and loved traveling to see her son and daughter-in-law. She is survived by her son, William E. Beach and his wife, Theresa M., of Portland, Oregon, a sister, Annie Good and her husband, Dale of Pittsfield, two brothers; Richard O’Brien of North Carolina and Paul O’Brien of Madison, several nieces, nephews and one great niece. She was predeceased by her parents and two nephews; Jonathan Sargent and Todd Noble. Arrangements are entrusted to Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield, ME.

Mildred “Miss Millie” Haining

NEWPORT - Mildred “Miss Millie” Haining, 51, has lost her long, courageous battle with cancer with her husband at her side. She passed quietly in her sleep on January 15, 2008 at a Pittsfield hospital. Mildred was born September 30, 1956 in Dexter the daughter of Ralph and Alice (Kennedy) Hall. She graduated from Nokomis Regional High, Class of 1975, where she was a member of the Art Club. She continued her enjoyment of art and her crafts skills throughout her life. Millie was a past member of the Church of Christ, where she also served as a Sunday School teacher. She was a co-owner of H & H Racing of Newport, where she enjoyed working as a mechanic and a crew member. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother while living her entire life as a Newport resident. She had been employed at Irving Tanning Company in Hartland. Millie is survived by her father, and husband Stephen, both of Newport. She was predeceased by her mother on July 1, 2004. She is also survived by a son, James Haining and friend Jamie of Newport; 2 daughters, Martha Lane and husband Mark of Newport, and Chrystal Haining, also of Newport; 3 brothers, LeRoy and wife Nancy Hall of Etna, Millard and wife Jane Hall of Dexter, and John Hall of Hartland; 2 sisters, Nina Buzzell and friend Scott of Newport, Geneva and husband Joseph Sabina of CT; and 9 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 11 AM Monday, January 21st, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, with Pastor Brian Woodbury officiating. .

Terence “Ted” Cochran

NEWPORT - Terence T. Cochran, 79, died January 14, 2008 at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born June 16, 1928 at Corinna a son of Terence and Ida (Harville) Cochran. He worked for Alco Electric until his retirement in 1990. Ted moved to Newport in 1991. He is survived by a son Terence Lewis Cochran of Perham; 2 daughters, Tami Bancroft of New Hampshire and Diana Doody of Mapleton; a brother Norman Murray of Bangor; sister, Sylvia Goins of Alabama; 6 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including a very special niece and nephew, Bryan and Donna Cochran of Corinna. He was predeceased by a brother, Byron Cochran and 2 sisters, Madeline Hill and Gloria Zieseniss. Friends called from 6- 8 PM on Thursday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services were held at 11 AM on Friday, January 18th, with Pastor George Finnemore officiating. Laura Barden Crummett

HARTLAND - Laura Barden Crummett, 79, died, January 14, 2008 at Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield. She was born in Palmyra, Maine on December 23, 1928, the daughter of Lewis and Eda (Holt) Barden. She graduated from Hartland Academy in 1947. She married Donald Crummett on November 10, 1951. They raised two daughters and operated Bardens store in Hartland for 14 years. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband and love of her life, Don, in 1999 and her brother Lewis Barden Jr., in 1949. She is survived by two daughters; Savilla (Crummett) Morgan and her husband, Dana of Hartland, Julie (Crummett) Mathews and her husband, Larry of Pittsfield, 7 grandchildren; Frank Morgan and his wife, Jessica, Eric and Tom Rouillard, Dana and Deana Morgan, Jennifer (Mathews) Bragg and her husband James, and Joshua Mathews and his wife, Stephanie, 7 great grandchildren; Sydney and Taylor Rouillard, Katelyn Morgan, Caleb and Isabelle Mathews, and Christian and Mikayla Bragg. In accordance with her wishes, private family visitation will be held. A spring graveside and committal service will be held at the Village cemetery in Pittsfield. Memorial donations may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church, 573 North Main Street, Pittsfield, ME 04967 in Laura’s memory. Richard A. Michaud

NEWPORT & CORINNA - Richard A. Michaud, 86, died on December 24, 2007 at home in Newport attended by his family. He was born in Wallagrass July 18, 1921 a son of Laurent and Isabelle (Corbin) Michaud. He graduated from Bradford High School, Class of 1941. Dick served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in Europe under the command of General Eisenhower. He married Charlotte “Ann” Buckland on June 26, 1948 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Dexter. He worked as the steam boiler operator for Guilford Woolen Mill and Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna for many years.
Richard retired in 1992 but continued to be active with his vegetable garden. He was a faithful communicant of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Pittsfield, a member of the Cardinal Mercier Council 2625 Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post #73 in Corinna. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Ann of Newport; 2 daughters, Judith Cruickshank of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jayne Field and husband John of Bangor; and a son, Peter R. Michaud of Newburgh; a granddaughter, Katie Ann Randall and her boyfriend Aaron Rideout of Portland; Katie’s father Frank Randall and wife Christine of Pittsfield; a brother in law, Eugene Jarvis of Bethel; and his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Dora Parsons and Rena Jarvis, his brother Neil Michaud, his brother in law, Erlon Parsons, sister-in-law, Shirley (Mansel) Michaud and son-in-law, Frank Cruickshank, MD. Richard will be fondly remembered by his two brothers in law, William A. “T-Bob” Buckland and his companion Christine Kelley and John Buckland and his wife Millie, all of Newport. Last but not least, he will be missed by his old gray cat and chair companion, Dukie. Friends may called from 5 to 8 PM Friday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated 11 AM Saturday, December 29th at St. Agnes Church, 50 Detroit Avenue, Pittsfield, with the Rev. Father James Robichaud officiating. Spring burial will be in the Pittsfield Village cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in his memory to St. Agnes Church, 50 Detroit Avenue, Pittsfield, ME 04967.

Robert M. Murphy

ST. ALBANS - Robert M. Murphy, 86, died unexpectedly December 22, 2007 at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born in East Boston, March 10, 1921, the son of George and Martha (MacDonald) Murphy. He was educated in Massachusetts Schools and attended community college in California. He married Rita M. Hood in Lynn Massachusetts on August 31, 1941. He was a World War II U.S. Coast Guard veteran serving in the Philippine’s and Iwo Jima. Bob was employed in California at McDonald Douglas, which became Bowing Aircraft, as head of Security for over 30 years. He is a life member of the VFW in California and a life member of the American Legion in California and Corinna, ME. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Rita M. Murphy of St. Albans, two sons Bruce and Jeff of Connecticut, four daughters, Cindy, Linda, Alicia, all of Connecticut, and Marcia of PA. Twelve grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter Pamela. At his request a memorial Mass will be said at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center 34 High St., Newport, ME.
