He was born in Pittsfield on July 14, 1936, the son of Everett and Marguerite (Gifford) Connors Sr.
He attended Pittsfield schools and graduated from MCI with the class of 1954.
Gerald has always been a very conscientious, dedicated hardworking family man. He provided well for his family. He worked many jobs starting with Forest Frederick’s Construction, pressing at Wright’s Dry Cleaners, oil burner technician for Staples Oil Company and maintenance at MCI until he settled in at UPS. After driving delivery for UPS for 4 years, he worked in management for 11 years. While a part of UPS’ management team he had many special assignments that were instrumental in UPS’ expansion throughout the United States. Mainly because of the long hours away from home that he put in for UPS, he went back to working maintenance at MCI to be closer to home for his then teenage children. To finish out his working years he worked for Ouellette’s Plumbing and finally 8 years for Thompson’s Oil Burner Service.
Throughout the years, Gerald and his family and friends enjoyed camping, deer hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing. Each summer he took his grandchildren to some of Maine’s attractions which included rides on Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad and enjoying many of Maine’s coastal beaches and other attractions.
In 2004, after years of studying the Bible with his wife and the Jehovah’s Witnesses, he became a baptized Jehovah’s Witness.
In 2005, he built a new home for himself and his wife, Marion, to spend their remaining years together. Being the jack-of-all trades that he was, he did most of the construction himself. Everything from piping in the heated floors, studding and installing drywall, to the final painting of the walls, before moving in January of 2006.
He and Marion celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 20, 2007. He led a very happy and healthy life until being diagnosed with colon cancer in September 2007.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marion of 50 years; his sons, Ken Connors and his wife, Mary, of Pittsfield, Alan Connors and his wife, Lisa, of Detroit, his daughter, Darlene Steeves and her husband, Ron (Bo), of Pittsfield; six grandchildren, Candace Connors of Albany, NY, Russell Connors of Bangor, Chris and Adam Connors of Detroit, and Rob and Michael Steeves of Pittsfield; his brother, John Connors of Sidney, and two sisters, Carolyn Cunningham of Eddington and Rachel Beall of MD, and many other extended family and friends.
He was predeceased by his brother, Everett Connors, Jr.
A memorial service was held at 3 PM, Saturday, April 5, 2008 at the Kingdom Hall Jehovah’s Witnesses, 582 North Main Street, Pittsfield.
Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses or the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care and/or the HealthReach Hospice, c/o MaineGeneral Health, Office of Philanthropy, PO Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903, in Gerald’s memory.
