Foster A. Flood

GARDINER - Foster A. Flood, 51, formerly of Newport, died peacefully on December 7, 2008 with his mother and his cousin Janie by his side at Maine General Hospital in Augusta.
He was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on May 1, 1957, the son of Mellie Flood and Marlene (Lee) LeClair. He worked as a commercial truck driver for Sysco for many years.
Foster grew up in the town of Burnham and attended Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield and received his diploma from Nokomis High School in Newport.
He was very proud of his Harley Davidson and was a member of the United Bikers of Maine. He loved reading and studying about WWII, listening to music, playing video games and his guitar. He enjoyed a good game of cribbage and played cards often with family and friends.
He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Bullock and her husband, Robert of Waddington, England; his companion of 15 years, Joanne Lavallee of Gardiner and her daughter, Cass; his mother, Marlene LeClair of Molunkis TWP; his sisters, Mary Walker and her husband, Jamie of Burnham and Lisa Gummy of Hudson, NY and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was predeceased by his father, Mellie Flood and three brothers, Paul, Russell, and David Cookson.
A receiving of friends was held from 6-8 PM, Thursday, December 11, 2008 at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A funeral service was held at 11 AM, Friday, December 12, 2008 at the funeral home with the Rev. Al Thibault officiating. A private committal service will be held in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Manna Ministries, PO Box 2763, Bangor, ME 04402, in Foster’s memory. Norval Sterling Vaughan, Jr.

Burnham - Norval Sterling Vaughan, Jr., 77, died Monday, November 24, 2008 after a short battle with cancer, at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Norval was born in Fort Fairfield, Maine on December 6, 1930, the son of Norval and Florence Vaughan, Sr.
He spent the last forty years working and managing the wood lot for Bingham land. There he spent time cutting wood, working the horses, building roads and bridges, and working with the skidder. Throughout the years he enjoyed pulling horses, buying and selling horses in Ohio, going to the fairs, attending his granddaughters sporting events and dance recitals, spending time at camp, and being with his family.
Norval is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Dorothy; his dedicated son, Norval Sterling Vaughan III and his wife, Darlene of Burnham; his two granddaughters, Becky Walker and her husband, Aaron of Plymouth and Torie Robinson and her husband, Dale of Buckfield; his great grandchildren, Cody, Melissa, Hannah, and Wyatt; his sister, Marjorie Saportia of Florida; his brother, Lawrence Vaughan of Pittsfield, and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces.
The family greatly appreciated the support of HealthReach Hospice in Waterville.
A graveside service was held at 10 AM, Friday, November 28th, 2008 at the Village cemetery, Troy Road, Burnham.
Arrangements are entrusted to Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, Pittsfield.

Ronald “Robble” Sands

CORINNA - Ronald “Robble” Sands, 57, died unexpectedly November 30, 2008. He was born January 14, 1951 in Bangor, the son of Ronald and Avis (Thompson) Sands, Sr. He served in the U.S. Army during two tours in Vietnam and was a disabled veteran. Robble was a self-employed carpenter in Connecticut and Maine. He loved NASCAR and auctions and enjoyed the people he met during those times. He also served as a foster parent and enjoyed helping teenagers. He is survived by his wife Christine of Corinna; son, Kenneth and wife Susan Sands of Dexter; foster son, Bradley Theriault of Corinna; brother, Dwight and wife Joann Sands of CT; sister, Beverly and husband Tom Armsworthy of Madison; 3 grandchildren whom he adored, Gabby and Makenzie Sands and Johnny Theriault; a special cousin, “Mr. T” and wife Mary Thompson of Newport; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 3 children, Daniel, Eric, and Jamie Louise Sands in 1990; and a brother, Steven Sands. Friends called from 6-8 PM Thursday at Crosby & Neal Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna, where funeral services were held 1 PM Friday, December 5th, with the Rev. Daniel Ellingwood officiating. Michael David Snowman

Hartland - Michael David Snowman, 49, died November 17, 2008, at a Bangor hospital, after his collapse while fighting a house fire in Detroit. Mike died in the line of duty doing what he loved to do, helping others as a fireman. He was born November 23, 1958, in Waterville, the son of Daniel W. and Marion (Case) Snowman. Mike attended Pittsfield schools and graduated from Maine Central Institute, Class of 1978. Michael married Laureen Cota, June 17, 1978, in Pittsfield. He was a six-year U.S. Army veteran with three years foreign service. Mike was a propane service technician for many years and for the past 11 years he had been employed at Amerigas Propane, Pittsfield. He was a member of Hartland Baptist Church, where he was the Sunday school superintendent. Mike was a very proud and dedicated 25-year member of Hartland Volunteer Fire Department. He served as the secretary-treasure, fire police and safety officer. He was an avid golfer. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Laureen B. Snowman of Hartland; his mother, Marion C. Snowman of Plant City, Fla.; two sons and their wives, Joshua and Samantha Snowman of Palmyra, and Benjamin and Jennifer Snowman of Canaan; one daughter and her husband, Emily and Timothy Ryan of San Antonio; two brothers and their wives, Thomas and Pamela Snowman of Newport, and Mark and Audrey Snowman of Palmyra; five grandchildren, Ellie, Elizabeth, Kiera, Richard and Carolyn; a special uncle, David Snowman of Palmyra; several nieces, nephews and cousins. A celebration of Mike's life with full fire department honors was conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, November 22, at Hartland Baptist Church with the Rev. David Michaud officiating. Burial was afterwards in the family lot at Village cemetery, Detroit. The family respectfully asks that instead of a lot of flowers, friends who wish may make memorial donations to Hartland Baptist Church to benefit youth activities. Arthur W. “Bud” Hincks

Portland - Arthur W. ‘Bud’ Hincks, 83, formerly of Pittsfield died November 12, 2008 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. He was born in Falmouth the son of Arthur C. and Miriam Derr Hincks. Bud was a graduate of Falmouth High School and was very proud of the fact that when he was on the basketball team they won the state championship in their division. During WWII he served in the Army infantry and saw action in Normandy, Rhineland and Central Europe, He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received defending our country. He very rarely spoke about the war and refused any veterans assistance because he believed there were men and women who were more deserving. After the war he returned home and married his wife in 1949. In 1963 the family moved to Pittsfield where they owned and operated Somerset Auto Supply in Pittsfield and Newport. Bud never lost his love for sports and also enjoyed Dixie Land Jazz. He is predeceased by his sister Doris M. Hincks and his great grandson Oliver William Cary.
Bud is survived by his wife Grethe Jensen Hincks, his daughter, Lisa R. Hincks of Charlotte, NC, his granddaughter, Heather Danielson and her companion, Brian Cary of Edward, CO and his grandson, Taylor Danielson of Vail, CO. Also surviving Bud are his two sisters, Josephine Hayward of Portland and Ramona Leighton of Lisbon Falls. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive him.
Visiting hours were held on Monday, November 17, 2008 from 4-7 PM at the Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth where a funeral service was held on Tuesday at 11 AM. Burial will follow at Pine Grove cemetery, Falmouth. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Arthur’s memory to the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, 11 Hunnewell Drive, Scarborough, ME 04074

Willette Schmidt

PALMYRA - Willette Schmidt, 73, died November 17, 2008 at Mercy Hospital, Portland. She was born September 7, 1935 in Lubec a daughter of Ralph and Effie (Dean) Young. She worked as a nurse’s aide but retired as a greeter at the Palmyra Walmart. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Robert Schmidt of Palmyra; 5 sons, Richard and wife Barbara Young, Robert and Lucille Brown, Ronald Brown, and Thomas Schmidt, all of Palmyra; Frank and wife Kathy Brown of New Hampshire; 6 daughters, Barbara Dearden of Massachusetts, Pauline and husband Matthew Brown of Palmyra, Helena and husband Ronald Boyd of Virginia, Sheila Schmidt, Lily Brown, Willette and husband Robert Kirk, all of Massachusetts; many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Memorial services were held 10 AM on Thursday, November 20th, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport with Deacon Frederick Harrigan officiating. Alice M. Curtis

CORINNA & CLEVELAND, TN - Alice Mae (Thompson) Curtis, 90, died November 19, 2008 at Morningside Assisted Living Center. She was born June 4, 1918 in Corinna a daughter of Frank and Martha (Rhodes) Thompson. She attended Corinna schools and was employed at Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna. She married Harold Woodrow Curtis February 8, 1936, and he predeceased her November 22, 1994. Alice was a member of the Pleasant Street Christian Church. She moved out to Tennessee to be near her daughter and family, and she is survived by Nancy and husband Donald Fenton of Cleveland, TN; a grandson, Brent and his wife Susan Fenton of Old Hickory, TN; a great grandson, Derrick Fenton of Cleveland, TN; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Beverly. Funeral services were held 2 PM Saturday, November 22nd at Crosby & Neal Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna, where friends called from 1 PM until the time of services. Pastor Michael Troyer will officiate. Burial was in the Morse’s Corner cemetery, Corinna. MARILYN M. WIERS

PALMYRA - Marilyn M. Wiers, 82, loving wife, mother and grandmother, was called home to be with the Lord on November 7, 2008 at Sebasticook Healthcare Facility. She was born October 24, 1926 in Fort Fairfield, a daughter of Oland and Myrtle (Spearin) MacLauchlan. She graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1945 and married Byron Wiers on November 22, 1945. She and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm and raised three children. She was a member of the St. Albans Grange, the Peoples United Methodist Church, Newport; past president of the Somerset County Extension ; past president, secretary and treasurer of the St. Albans Extension Group; past director, secretary and treasurer of the Maine State Farm Bureau, Somerset County; past president and district director of the Newport Business and Professional Womens Club; 4-H Leader; attended Home Demonstration Council meetings in Kentucky and Kansas; and was a past member of the St. Albans Union Church. Marilyn enjoyed swapping recipes and her Oatmeal Pie was a big hit at all the church suppers. One of her joys was making clothing for her family. Marilyn and her husband loved to travel to Vermont to visit special friends. In addition to her husband of Palmyra, she is survived by 2 sons, Michael and wife Libby of St. Albans, and Stephen and wife Buffy of Palmyra; daughter, Rebecca “Becky” of Palmyra; her brother Donn and wife Mary Jane MacLauchlin of Pittsfield; sister-in-law, Jean MacLauchlin of Lakeland, FL; 6 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Friends called from 6-8 PM. Tuesday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. Funeral services were held 10 AM Wednesday, November 12th, at Peoples United Methodist Church, 127 Main Street, Newport, with the Rev. Ellen Bridge officiating. Mary C. McManus

Corinna - Mary C. McManus, 93, of Corinna, ME, former longtime resident of 22 Pond St., Pittsfield, MA, passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2008.
Born in Pittsfield, October 2, 1915, the daughter of John T. and Elizabeth R. Sitzman Cronin, she attended the local schools and was a 1933 graduate of Pittsfield High School. She continued her studies as a graduate of the former Berkshire Business College.
Mrs. McManus was employed as a secretary at the Christian Center for 18 years retiring in 1991. Previously, she was employed at General Electric in the payroll department and also worked at the original 7-Up Bottling Company all in Pittsfield. Following her retirement, she moved to Corinna to make her home.
While in Pittsfield, she was a communicant of St. Josephs Church and a member of its Rosary Sodality. In Maine she was a communicant of Our Lady of the Snows in Dexter.
Her husband, the late James V. McManus died December 21, 1990.
She leaves her son, Michael K. McManus and his wife, Virginia of Durham, ME, her daughter, Maureen E. Coons and her husband, George of Corinna, ME, five grandchildren, and one sister, Dolores T. Daigle of Avon, MA. She was predeceased by her brother, John W. Cronin and her sisters, E. Barbara Rudd and. Anna G. Gramkowski.
Calling hours were, Friday, November 14, 2008, from 4 until 7 PM at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home in Corinna. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations should be made to Our Lady’s Kitchen, c/o Our Lady of the Snows, PO Box 346, Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426-0346.

Lt. Col. John M. Lane, US Army, Retired

NEWPORT & BANGOR - Lt. Col. John M. Lane, United States Army, Retired, 88, died peacefully November 2, 2008 at his Bangor residence. He was born September 16, 1920 in Solon, a son of John and Jessie (Safford) Lane, Sr. He married Marguerite (Haseltine) on January 30, 1943 and graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1950 with a Bachelors Degree in Agricultural Engineering. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Barrows-Skidgel Post 105 American Legion and Newport Memorial Post 11191 Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Newport. John taught for 13 years at the Newport Junior High School. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marguerite of Bangor; 2 sons, John Michael Lane and wife Kathleen of Rockland and Mark and wife Patricia Lane of Newburgh; 2 daughters, Janie and husband Michael Ames of Newport and Cindy and husband David Hansberry of Litchfield, NH; 7 grandchildren, Stephanie and husband Daniel Elliot, Christopher and Derek Lane, Jessica and Katie Ames, Steven Hansberry and Dyane Dauphinee; several nieces and nephews. Friends called from 6-8 PM Thursday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services were held 10 AM Friday, November 7th, with the Rev. George Darling officiating. Burial was be at noon following the funeral at the Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery, Augusta. Dorothy A. Perkins Luce

AUGUSTA & Newport - Dorothy A. Perkins Luce, 66, of Boucher Avenue died unexpectedly on Oct. 31, 2008, in the emergency room of MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta.
She was born in St. John, New Brunswick, on Feb. 7, 1942, the daughter of Francis H. Perkins and Joyce E. (Prior) Perkins.
Dorothy was a 1960 graduate of Newport High School and she received an associate's degree in accounting from the University of Maine at Augusta.
Prior to her retirement in 1994, she was employed by the state of Maine for many years. She started her career with the state Department of Health and Human Services and later moved to the Department of Education and the Department of Agriculture.
Dorothy married Arnold A. Luce Jr., in 1990; he died on Dec. 6, 1993. She was also predeceased by her father.
Surviving are her mother, Joyce E. Nelson, of Newport; one sister, Patricia Fuller, of Topsham; one brother, Harold Nelson and his wife, Deborah, of Newport; and several nephews.
There will no public visiting hours. Committal prayers were offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 5th, in the chapel at Maine Veterans' Memorial cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
Memorial contributions may be made to People's United Methodist Church, 131 Main St., Newport, ME 04953.
Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

Lillian E. Hall

HARTLAND - Lillian E. Hall, 96, passed away November 1, 2008 at Sanfield Rehab and Living Center, Hartland. She was born October 4, 1912 in Hartland a daughter of Fred and Inez (Deering) Hart. She graduated from Hartland Academy. Lillian worked in the 1950s in the school lunch program. She later worked beside her husband Maurice at Hall’s Service Station in Hartland for 10 years. Lillian faithfully attended the Grace Linn United Methodist Church, was a 50 year life member of the Order of The Eastern Star and was a past member of Scott-Webb Auxiliary. She was predeceased by her husband and several siblings. Lillian is survived by her sons, Phillip and wife Lotena, Clifton and wife Linda, all of Hartland; daughters, Grace and husband Dean Peasley of Ripley; Jeanette and husband Stephen Hall of Guilford; sister Marguerite Hart of Fairfield; brothers Bernard Hart of Anson; Albert and wife Arlene Hart of Norridgewock; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Friends called from 6-8 PM Wednesday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. Graveside funeral and committal services were held 11 AM Thursday, November 6th, at Pine Grove cemetery, Hartland with Pastor Elizabeth Bailey-Mitchell officiating.
