Linda (Gatcomb) Hamilton

NEWPORT - Linda Hamilton, 62, passed away September 3, 2008 at a Boston hospital. She was born August 22, 1946 in Etna a daughter of George and Phyllis (Townsend) Gatcomb. Linda attended the Jubilee Family Worship Center and was a founding member of Heartsong. She was employed by the state as a home health care provider. She is survived by her mother of Brewer; 3 sons, Jeffrey and wife Debbie Schneider of Brunswick, Jeremy and wife Danielle Schneider of Brewer, Steven and wife Jessica Schneider of Newport; 3 brothers, George Gatcomb, Jr. of Warren, Douglas Gatcomb of Bradford, John and friend Carol Packard of Charleston; 2 sisters, Donna and husband Robert Wakem of Springfield, MA, and Priscilla Gatcomb of Corinth; 3 grandchildren, Emma, Lucas and Joshua. A memorial service will be held 11 AM Saturday, September 20th, at Jubilee Family Worship Center. Interment will be in Clark’s Hill cemetery, Stetson. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. ATHILL “SAM” WILCOX

DEXTER - Athill “Sam” Wilcox, 80, died September 6, 2008 at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. He was born June 23, 1928 in Perham, a son of George and Delia (Twist) Wilcox. He served in the U.S. Army in the 331st Ordinance Depot Company from 1944 to 1946. Sam was employed by Dexter Shoe Company for 20 years and then left to start his own construction company. He also organized a bus service to transport people from surrounding towns to Dexter Shoe. His passion in life was motorcycles and truck driving for Fox & Ginn Company. He helped design the Fox and Ginn logo. He was a 52 year member of AA and was a member of the Dexter First Free Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathleen (Johnson) Wilcox of Dexter; 2 sons, and their wives Timothy and Linda Wilcox of Boothbay and Kenneth and Audrey Johnson of Dexter; a brother, Eldon Wilcox, and sister Mae Skidgel, both of Caribou; 4 grandchildren, Michael, Mandie, Aimee and Allison; a step-grandson, Scott; 3 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a step grandson, Bruce, and 6 brothers. Friends called from 7 to 9 PM Wednesday, September 10th at Crosby & Neal, 61 Main Street, Dexter. Funeral services were be held 2 PM Thursday at the First Free Baptist Church with Pastor Will Walters officiating. Burial was in the Jackman Corner cemetery, Sangerville. Memorial donations may be made to the First Free Baptist Church, 130 Spring Street, Dexter, ME 04930. .

Marcia L. Church

CORINNA - Marcia (Schillinger) Church, 71, passed away peacefully September 10, 2008 at a Bangor hospital surrounded by her family following a brief period of ill health. She was born May 19, 1937 at Claremont, NH, along with her twin sister Martha, who predeceased her in June of 1994. She was the daughter of Leo and Mary (Torlish) Schillinger. Marcia graduated from Corinna Union Academy and worked for many years at Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna, retiring from Dexter Shoe Company. In 1974 she married Maynard Church and together they lived in her lifelong home on the Bond Road in Corinna.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Kelli and husband Ron Richardson of Corinna; a half sister, Alberta Fuller of Melbourne, FL; granddaughters, Amanda Perry Stitham, husband Erik, and their children Joshua, Julia and Nicolas of Newport; and Morgan Perry of Corinna; a grandson Ron, Jr. and wife Jessie Richardson and thei r children Parker, Harley and Olivia; a nephew Donald Bragg and wife Lisa, and their son Jason of Old Town. She will be fondly remembered by friends Marion Sinclair, the Liberty family, Paul and Irene Savage, Carroll and Marge Downs. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no visitation. A graveside committal service was held at 11 AM on Saturday, September 13th, at Morses Corner cemetery, Corinna. Family and friends were invited to a time of fellowship at the home of Kelli and Ron. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bangor Humane Society, 693B Mt. Hope Avenue, Bangor, ME 04401. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Chapel, Corinna. Fred Norris McFarland

CORINNA - Fred Norris McFarland, 76, of Dexter Road, Corinna, died early Tuesday morning at his home. He was born in Exeter, February 29th, 1932, a son of Norris and Orilla (Knowles) McFarland and received his education in local schools graduating from Corinna Union Academy in 1952. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served as a Seaman until June of 1956. He then moved to California and worked for McDonald-Douglass in Long Beach and retired in 1996 when he moved back to Corinna to be near his family and friends. In 1998, he met his soulmate, Beverly Wright and they married September 30, 2006. He attended Morse’s Corner Baptist Church in Corinna and was a member of the Corinna American Legion Post 73.
He is survived by his wife Beverly Wright McFarland of Corinna; a step-daughter, Bernice Wright of Wilton; also several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends and neighbors.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Joseph’s Homecare, 900 Broadway, Bangor, ME 04401 or to the Levi Stewart Library, 8 Levi Stewart Drive, Corinna, ME 04928. Memorial services will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, September 20th from the Morse’s Corner Baptist Church followed by a luncheon in the church vestry. Cremation services are being cared for and provided by the Wiles Funeral Home, Cremation Service, & Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington.

William E. Lemerise

NEWPORT - William “Bill” E. Lemerise went home to be with the Lord, August 24, 2008. Bill was born July 31, 1937, in Newport, ME, the son of the late Obert E. Lemerise & Lillian M. Deschaine Lemerise. Survived by beloved wife Betty of 45 years, daughters Robin G. Lemerise and friend Sam of Waynesboro, VA, Carol A. Burgandine & husband Dale of Deerfield, VA, Brenda K. Trotter & husband Larry of Hampton, VA, Linda Hubbard of Crimora, VA, son Steven Decker & wife Debbie of Elizabeth City, NC, sister Lillian M. Sawyer & husband Roger of Newport, ME, brother Merril Dollar of Cream Ridge, NJ, and seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Bill joined the U.S. Marine Corps, August 3, 1954, serving 24 years. During his career he served assignments on both U.S. coasts, Japan, Okinawa, the Philippines and Vietnam. While serving as the 1st Sgt. of the Sea School in Portsmouth, VA, Bill was promoted to Sergeant Major and assigned to the Marine Security Guard Battalion in Arlington, VA. His responsibilities included security of all U.S. Embassies and Consulates throughout the world. Bill ceremoniously retired February 1978. Bill and Betty have made their home in Staunton, VA where he joined the Augusta County Sheriff’s Dept. in July 1978. He graduated from the Criminal Justice Academy in August 1979, received degrees from Blue Ridge Community College in Police Science, Law Enforcement, and Corrections, twice attaining magna cum laude, and attended numerous other schools in Law Enforcement. Bill served in this capacity until retirement in June 2002, serving 20 years. Bill will be sadly missed by all his family and many friends, always respected for his sound judgement, strong leadership and rich conversations we all cherished. A life well lived.

Beverly Joanne Johndro

CORINNA - Beverly Joanne Johndro (Nana Jo), 75, passed August 30, 2008, at home after a battle with cancer. Beverly was born October 25, 1932 in Corinna, ME, the daughter of Fred and Ruth (Edgerly) Leavitt. She was a long time resident of Corinna where she attended school and worked. Beverly married Percy Joseph Johndro, January 6, 1951. She worked at the T & K Store, the Snowflake Canning Company and 35 years at Eastland Woolen Mill, also 12 years at the Newport McDonald’s. Her favorite passions were dancing and walking with Jay, reading, cooking for and spending time with her beloved family. She is survived by her special companion of 14 years, Jay Clukey; 5 children, Edmund & wife Vernelia (Glidden) of Exeter, Linda & husband Douglas Mayhew, and Judy Varney of Corinna, Delores & husband Andy Clukey of Garland, and Percy & wife Patty (Haverly) of Newport; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren who brought much joy into her life; her brother, Stanley and 4 sisters, Lucille, Joyce, Barbara and Mary Kay. She is predeceased by her husband of 34 years, her parents, 3 sisters, Arline, Libby and Rita, and a special grandson, Dougie Mayhew. Beverly chose not to have any viewing or funeral. Arrangements are being done by Memorial Alternatives.

Charles D. Cota

PITTSFIELD - Charles Delbert Cota, 76, went home to be with the Lord August 26, 2008. He was born February 21, 1932 at Caribou a son of John and Anna (Maskell) Cote. Charlie served in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean War. He owned and operated a dairy farm in Pittsfield for many years, and more recently worked at the Ethan Allen plant in Burnham until it closed. Charlie was a quiet man and never complained. He loved doing paint by number pictures, reading, collecting stamps, and spending time with his family. He always watched for the first barn swallow and first humming bird of the season. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Roy and Andrew. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gloria (MacDougal) Cota of Pittsfield; a son, Ron and wife Shary Cota of Burnham; 2 daughters, Sherry and husband Joe Humphrey of Burnham, Laureen and husband Mike Snowman of Hartland; a brother Leslie Cote of Fort Fairfield; a sister Edith and husband Nick Geiger of PA; 7 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Graveside committal services were held 11 AM on Saturday, August 30th, at the family lot, Pittsfield Village cemetery. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. Patsy L. Gourley

CAMBRIDGE - Patsy L. Gourley, 55, lost her life to cancer on August 26, 2008, with her family by her side. She was born June 7, 1953, daughter of Philip and Gladys (Neal) Pease.
Patsy was a graduate of Piscataquis Community High School in Guilford, and attended Thomas College in Waterville. She was affiliated with the Cambridge Baptist Church and was a member of the Cambridge Extension. She loved spending time with her family, especially with her grandson, Trevor. She was a devoted wife, mother, and “Nana”, and was always there for family whenever needed. She worked at the Dexter Shoe Company for 27 years and then moved on to work for Dr. Steike in Dover-Foxcroft.
She was predeceased by her father, Philip C. Pease. She is survived by her beloved husband of 36 years, Terry Wayne Gourley of Cambridge; daughter, Tarsha Duby and a special grandson, Trevor both of Guilford; son Brock and his wife, Karen of Cambridge; mother and step father, Gladys and Arthur Packard of Cambridge; sister, Vicki McKenney and husband, Dale of Parkman; brother Alton Quimby and his wife, Gloria of Ripley; several nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by many friends and family.
At the family’s request, no memorial services will be held. In lieu of flowers, those who wish, may make donations in Patsy’s memory, to the Susan G. Komen race for the Cure, 5005 LBJ Fwy., Ste. 250, Dallas, TX 75244.

Normand Joseph Bouffard, Sr.

PITTSFIELD - Normand Joseph Bouffard, Sr., 72, passed away August 15, 2008 at a Bangor hospital with his family by his side. He was born April 14, 1936 in Benton, the son of Joseph and Mary (Plante) Bouffard. He attended Lawrence High School and served three years as a Paratrooper in the U.S. Army 11th Airborne Infantry Division.
He married Lorraine E. McLaggan of Detroit on April 4, 1959. He was a self-employed business man, who together with his wife, owned and operated The Furniture Exchange, Bouffard’s Wallpaper and Flooring, and for the past 34 years, Security Fence Company, all located in Pittsfield.
He was a Charter member of the V.F.W. in Fairfield; past commander of the American Legion of Pittsfield and member for over 45 years; past president of the St. Agnes Parish Council; past Grand Knight, past Faithful Navigator, 4th degree member of the Bernard Poulin Assembly of the Pittsfield Knights of Columbus for over 45 years and also an honorary life member. He was a member of the Pittsfield Kiwanis Club for over 40 years, where he was a past president and past Lieutenant Governor. He received the George F. Hixson Award and is a lifetime member. He, along with his wife, ran the Kiwanis raffle booth every summer during the Kiwanis Karnival. Norm helped form the Pittsfield Driftbusters Snowmobile Club in 1970. He was Trail master for 20 years and was a past member of the St. Albans Sno-Devils Snowmobile Club for nearly 30 years. He received the Maine Snowmobiler of the Year Award for the 1996-1997 season from the Maine Snowmobile Association.
He enjoyed riding his six-wheeler, snowmobiling on his “Yamaha”, playing cards, watching John Wayne movies and Walker, Texas Ranger, playing jokes on his family and spending time with his family and friends. His favorite activity was playing “Santa” in the Pittsfield area for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lorraine; three daughters, Annette Bouffard and her partner, Michael Madden of Pittsfield, Mary Houston and her husband, Shawn of Pittsfield, and Katherine Kitchin and her husband, Stanley of Detroit; his son, Normand (Bub) Bouffard, Jr., of Pittsfield; his brothers, Paul Bouffard of Las Vegas, NV., Joseph Bouffard and his wife, Edwina of Zephyrhills, FL, Ernest Bouffard and his wife, Noella of Augusta, and Gerard Bouffard of Broadbrook, CT; 4 grandchildren, Whitney Houston, Ashley and Trevor Kitchin, and Bryson Bouffard, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; three sisters, Lorette, Annette, and Paulette; two brothers, Paul and Robert, and his special mother-in-law, Erma E. McLaggan.
A receiving of friends was held from 6-8 PM, Tuesday, August 19th, 2008 at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A memorial Mass celebrating Norm’s life was held at 11 AM, Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at the St. Agnes Catholic Church, Detroit Ave., Pittsfield. Interment followed at the Detroit Village cemetery, Route 220, Detroit.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Pittsfield Area Kiwanis, PO Box 254, Pittsfield, ME, 04967 or to the Pine Tree Camp, PO Box 518, Bath, ME 04530 in Normand’s memory.
Arrangements are entrusted to Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield.

Betty L. Shorey

PITTSFIELD - Betty L. Shorey, 76, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at Eastern Maine medical Center in Bangor.
She was born on May 17, 1932 in Winn, Maine, the daughter of Charles and Viora (Grass) Wyman. She graduated from Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln with the class of 1950.
Betty was employed for 32 years as the book keeper for MSAD #53. She was a lifetime member of the Arts Club. She was co-founder of the Pittsfield Egg Festival and belonged to the Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed camping, sewing, reading, making crafts, and listening to country music. She was an avid fan of NASCAR with Dale Earnhardt Sr., #3, being her favorite.
She is survived by her son, John Shorey and his special friend, Beverly Buker of St Albans; her daughter, Penny Basford and her husband, Jim of Plymouth; 4 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jack Shorey in September of 1985.
A graveside service was held at 11 AM, Saturday, August 23rd, 2008 at the Village cemetery, Peltoma Ave., Pittsfield with Rev. Glenn Nichols officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sebasticook Valley Hospital Developmental Office, 447 North Main Street, Pittsfield, ME 04967.
Arrangements are entrusted to Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield.

Helen F. Millett

PITTSFIELD - Helen F. Millett, 81, died peacefully on Sunday, August 17, 2008 at Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield. She was born in Washburn, ME on April 3, 1927, the daughter of F. Milo and Della (Bubar) Wiers.
Helen enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and reading. She spent much of her life farming. She was content to sit outside on the deck or by the pool. She took great pride in her birdfeeders and enjoyed watching the birds and wildlife. After the death of her husband, she moved next door to her son and his family where she was very much loved and taken care of for many years.
In the past, she was involved with the town of Palmyra election polls. She had close friends from the alumni of Newport High School where she had graduated from in 1945 and loved hosting their class reunions in her home.
She attended High Street Congregational Church for many years and was currently attending the Calvary Baptist Church in Pittsfield. She was the Bubar reunion secretary for 13 years.
She is survived by her three children; Joy Hughes of St. Albans, Willis Millett and his wife, Martha of Pittsfield, and Nancy Valencourt and her husband, Wayne of Lyman; 7 grandchildren, Andrea, Jon, Greg, Wesley and his fiancée, Jill Arno, Tyler and his wife, Julie, Luke, and Neil; a very special great granddaughter, Alexis; her sister, Mary-Lou Fraser of Bangor; and a brother, Irving Wiers and his wife, Phyllis of Enfield, CT and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Millett; a son, Wayne; a daughter, Barbara; her sister, Louise Barris and a brother, Frederick Wiers.
A graveside service was held at 1:00pm, Thursday, August 21, 2008 at the Palmyra Village cemetery, Warren Hill Road, Palmyra with the Rev. Scott Millett officiating.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Sebasticook Valley Hospital Development Office, c/o Sue DiRosario, 25 Main Street, Pittsfield, ME 04967 in Helen’s memory.

Clyde W. Sprague, Sr.

DETROIT - Clyde Woodrow Sprague, Sr., 82, died August 10, 2008 at the Sebasticook Valley Health Care Facility following a long illness. He was born April 26, 1926 in Cherryfield the son of John R. and Nataline (Fickett) Sprague. His family moved to Detroit in 1938. Clyde was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II where he saw action in both the Atlantic and Pacific as a radioman aboard the destroyer escort the USS Gunnison and was part of the first U.S. task force to enter Tokyo Bay at the end of WW II. On Sept 12, 1948 Clyde married Janet Thalia Richardson in Town Hill, ME. They were married 58 years and raised five children together. Over the years he made his living at such things as woodcutting, trapping, farming, carpentry and he became proficient at plumbing, welding, and drafting. He was a builder of custom homes in the Pittsfield/Newport area for many years and retired to run a nursery and pursue his love of farming. He is predeceased by his wife Janet on April 20, 2007, a sister, Ramona Pierce, and brothers Edward, John, and Forrester Sprague. He is survived by his five children and their spouses; Clyde and Nancy Sprague Jr. of Attleboro MA, Diane and Philip Melanson of Plymouth, ME, Denice and Roland Lowe of Augusta, MT, Richard and Susan Sprague of Bucksport, ME, Dwayne and Ann Sprague of South Portland, ME, two sisters Harriet DeRevere of Crystal River FL, Margaret Inman of Pittsfield, ME, 19 grandchildren and spouses, 16 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A loving family by whom he will be greatly missed. Private graveside services were held August 12, 2008 at the Detroit Village cemetery with Pastor Gary Akeley officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High St., Newport, ME.
