Gerald L. MacKenzie

Plymouth - Gerald L. MacKenzie, 82, went to heaven on February 19, 2009, at his home surrounded by his wife and family. He was born July 19, 1926 in Millinocket a son of James and Carrie (Skinner) MacKenzie.
He served as foreman for the State of Maine Transportation Dept. for 37 1/2 years before retiring. He was also the road commissioner for Plymouth for over 25 years.
Gerald left Millinocket and moved to Plymouth where he met Christie Hines. They were married July 31, 1946, celebrated 62 years of marriage and raised nine children together. Their home had an open door for the many relatives and neighborhood children.
He enjoyed riding his horses, and later bred horses and raced colts at Maine fairs. He loved music; playing his guitar and singing with his family. After he retired, fishing was a great enjoyment. He also loved to hunt. Gerald and Christie enjoyed coon and deer hunting together and teaching their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren hunting skills and hunter safety. He spent many hours at hunting camp with friends and family.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Christie M. MacKenzie of Plymouth; five daughters, Linda and husband Mike Seavey of Plymouth, Brenda and husband Philip Ripton, Lorraine and husband Aaron Hawthorne, Kris MacKenzie and Todd Braley, all of Newport, Sharon and husband Tom McDonald of Bangor; three sons, Gerald “Butch” and wife Laurie MacKenzie of Etna, George “Buck” and wife Betty MacKenzie of Newport, Scott and wife Allison MacKenzie of Plymouth.
Papa MacKenzie will be loved and missed by his grandchildren: Jonathan and wife Nancy Seavey of Dover Foxcroft, Leslie and husband Jason Feid of North Attleboro, MA., Amie Seavey of Hermon, Angela and husband Matt Brown, Kurt and wife Heather MacKenzie, all of Palmyra, Trisha Ripton of CT., Jared Ripton, Joshua Ripton, Cain MacKenzie, Adam and wife Liz Hawthorne, Craig and Jessie Hawthorne, Tyler MacKenzie, Zachery Leal and MacKenzie Leal, all of Newport, Amanda Ripton of Millinocket, Matt and wife Linarre McDonald of Belfast, Christopher and wife Megan McDonald of Howland, Elizabeth and husband Kevin Switzer of Cumberland, Aaron and wife Shelly Hawthorne of Texas, Laurie and husband Bill Butland of Etna, Sarah MacKenzie of New York City, Ashley MacKenzie of Florida, Anna MacKenzie and Isaac MacKenzie, both of Plymouth; and 23 great grandchildren.
Uncle Gerald will be remembered by a dear niece Dawn and husband Paul Rutkowski of Newport.
He will now be with his son James “Jim” MacKenzie who died in 2003, and grandson Ryan MacKenzie, who died in 2004. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Kenneth MacKenzie, Robert MacKenzie, and Tom MacKenzie; and sisters Dorothy Thomen, Annie Castle, and Lula Judkins.
Friends called from 2-4 & 6-8 PM Saturday, February 21st, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. Funeral services were held 2 PM Sunday at the Emmanuel Bible Baptist Church, Plymouth, with the Reverends Robert Emrich and Richard Berry officiating. Ida Babnaw

Canaan - Ida B. Babnaw, 92, of Canaan, passed away Thursday February 19, 2009 at Maple Crest Rehab., and Living Center in Madison, with her family at her side.
She was born May 26, 1916 in Athens, Maine, the daughter of Ara and Kate (Goldsmith) Hall.
Ida attended schools in Athens graduating from Somerset Academy.
She met and married Oliver Babnaw on March 14, 1942 in Pittsfield. He passed away in 1984.
Ida worked intermittently throughtout her life. She spent most of her life as a home maker. She did work at Baxter Canning in Hartland which later became Snowflake Canning and then during the 1960’s Ida worked at Norwock Shoe Company in Skowhegan, later on after her husband passed she worked as a live in caregiver for elderly people.
She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Skowhegan, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Aux., in Skowhegan.
She enjoyed cooking, canning, pickling, making mince meat, going on overnight trips, and she liked to go snowmobiling, but most of all she loved family gatherings.
She is survived by her children; her son Richard Babnaw and his wife Katherine, of Skowhegan, her two daughters; Priscilla Boudreau of Skowhegan, Patricia Lessard and her husband Francis, of Canaan, eleven grandchildren; Sherry, Roderick, Ann Marie, Lisa, Trish, Sarah, Julie, Alan, Katie, Jason, Nicole, 17 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-granddaughter, 1 daughter-in-law, Charlene Babnaw, many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Oliver, her son Michael Babnaw, two sisters, Irene Steeves and Ruth Hubbard, three brothers, Maurice Hall, Frank Hall, and Earle Hall, 1 grandson, Kevin Babnaw.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 from 6 to 8 PM at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 10 AM at the funeral home. Burial will be held in the spring at the Mount Rest cemetery in Athens, Maine.

RONALD “RON” CRONKITE, SR.

Hudson - Ronald Dale Cronkite, Sr., 50, died unexpectedly February 22nd, 2009 while skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain. He was born June 2, 1958 in Bangor, son of Dale W. and Doris V. (Stevens) Cronkite. Ron was ambitious, hard working, outgoing, and lived life to the fullest. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed basketball, sled hockey, skiing, four wheeling, hunting and camping. Ron was an active member of Alpha One and the Handicapped Skiing Programs. Surviving in addition to his mother Doris (Stevens) Cronkite of Hudson are three children: Bobbie-Jo (Cronkite) Riley and her husband Ian of Fort Hood, TX, Ronald “Ronnie” Cronkite, Jr. and Dianna (Cronkite) Sullivan and her husband David, all of Veazie; six grandchildren: Kyrestaine, Chelsea, Caleb, Colby, Mason and Corbin; two sisters Sharon Merchant and her husband Robert of Kenduskeag and Corinne Ouelette and her husband Doug of Glenburn; a niece and nephews. A funeral service was held at 10 AM Saturday, February 28th, 2009 at Brookings-Smith 133 Center Street, Bangor with the Rev. Matthew Ward, Senior Pastor of the Charleston Pentecostal Church, officiating. Relatives and friends called from 9 AM until time of service. Herman R. Wakem

Stetson - Herman Richardson Wakem, 96, passed away February 10th, 2009 at Ross Manor Nursing Home in Bangor. He was born October 16th, 1915 in Greenfield, New Brunswick, Canada the son of Robert R. and Lillian (Cox) Wakem. He was naturalized a United States Citizen in Presque Isle in 1924. He joined the U.S. Navy and served in WW II with the Sea Bees. He married Muriel P. Worth in 1936. Herman worked for the Maine Potato Growers in Presque Isle from 1949-1957. He took a job with the Panama Canal Government in Panama and worked there until he retired at the age of 62. He left Panama and made his home in Milton, FL were he lived for 30 years. He was a member of the Fairis Hill Baptist Church in Milton, FL where he taught Sunday School for many years. For the past several years Herman and Muriel have made their home with their daughters in Stetson. Herman is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Muriel P. Wakem of Stetson, his two daughters and their husbands, Connie and Charles Merrill of Stetson, Sherry and James Petty of Lakeland, FL, five grandchildren; Mark Merrill, Kelly Merrill, Jody Lyford, Jeffrey Petty Timothy Petty, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Shirley F. (Bessey) Macomber

ETNA - In the twinkling of an eye, Shirley F. Macomber went peacefully home to be with her Lord and Savior, April 8, 2009, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born June 26, 1929, in Dorchester, MA, the daughter of Lloyd and Isa (Given) Bessey. She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, John A. Macomber; three daughters, Sharon Nute and husband, Charles, of Carmel, Cynthia McRae of Middleboro, MA, and Glenda Rubin and husband, Norman Rubin, of Morehead, KY; one son, John Macomber Jr. of Troy; one sister, Lois Foster and husband, Dave Foster, of Northport, FL; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She will also be remembered by special camping friends. She was predeceased by her brother, Richmond Bessey and his wife, Dorothy. A memorial service was held 1 p.m. Friday, April 17, at Calvary Baptist Church, 39 Grove St., Newport, with Pastor George Finnemore officiating. E. Arlene Lewis

PALMYRA - E. Arlene Lewis, 85, died April 5, 2009 at her residence following a long illness. She was born March 22, 1924 in Dexter, a daughter of George and Sadie (Morrill) Nutter. She was a member of the Palmyra Senior Citizens and drove a school bus for S.A.D. 48, retiring at age 75. Arlene is survived by a daughter, Susan and husband Timothy Boulanger of Hartland; a dear friend, Lyle Chadwick of Palmyra; a brother, Harold and wife Millie Nutter of St. Albans; a sister, Dorothy Dubois of Ripley; 2 grandchildren, Nathaniel and wife Debbie Boulanger of West Baldwin and Matthew Boulanger and fiancée Sierra Hendricks of Corinna; 2 great grandchildren, Carter and Emma Boulanger; a special nephew, Wayne and wife Pam Peterson, Sr. of Palmyra; special great nephew and great niece, Wayne and wife Amanda Peterson, Jr. and their children, Chase and Hailey, and Kelly and husband J. D. Emerson and their children Zack and Luke of Winterport; a sister-in-law, Hilda Nutter of Hartland. She was predeceased by her husband, Clair “Duffy” Lewis; a brother, Walter Nutter; and a sister, Evelyn Preston. Friends called from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday, April 8th at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services were held 10:30 AM Thursday, April 9th with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Grove cemetery, Hartland, later in the spring. Charlene L. (Brown) Williams

GUILFORD - Charlene L. Williams, 59, died unexpectedly April 7, 2009 at her residence. She was born October 18, 1949 at Etna a daughter of Stanley and Marion (Woodard) Brown. She worked for many years at Hardwood Products in Guilford and will be remembered as an Avon Lady for many years. She was also known as the “Cat Lady” in town as she took in stray cats and had them spayed or neutered.
She then either took them in herself or found them new homes. She will be sadly missed by many.
She is survived by her parents of Guilford; 2 daughters, Alice Faticanti of Guilford, and Mauricia Melia of North Berwick; 5 grandchildren, Beth Scott, Stanley Martin, Trista and Tiffani Melia; a great grandson, Trevor Martin of Clinton; brothers and sisters, Sheldon and Donna Woodard of Harmony, Marlon and Ruby Woodard of Guilford, Glendene and Jim Lockwood of Dover-Foxcroft, Virginia Lablanc and Charles Wells of Guilford, Deborah Brown and Sarah Damon of Milo, Don Woodard of Detroit, Dennis and Patsy Woodard of Corinna, and Darrel Woodard of Harmony; an uncle, Richard Brown of Guilford; a great aunt Donna and Steve True of Palmyra; a longtime special friend, John Leavitt of Dover-Foxcroft; as well as caring neighbors, Clarence and Cathy; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
She was predeceased by 3 brothers, Duane, Wayne and Ronald Woodard; and a grandson, Kegan Melia.
A memorial service will be held 1 PM Friday, April 17th, at Crosby & Neal, 21 Oak Street, Guilford.

Carole F. Padelford

TROY - Carole F. Padelford, 60, died April 5, 2009 at a Bangor hospital following a long illness. She was born December 5, 1948 in North Dighton, MA, the daughter of Henry and Lucille (Niles) Walsh. Carole served her community and blessed the lives of many children as a foster mother and day care provider. She will be fondly remembered as a loving person; devoted to family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Albert; a son, Scot and wife Jennifer Padelford, all of Troy; a sister, Janice and husband Charles Joy of Massachusetts; 2 grandchildren, Seth and Ashleigh Padelford; several nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 11 A.M. Saturday, April 11th at the Calvary Baptist Church, 39 Grove Street, Newport, with Pastor George Finnemore officiating. Following the service there will be a gathering of friends and family at the church. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. Robert Wellington Wright

DETROIT - Robert "Bob" W. Wright, age 86, of Detroit, died March 28, 2009 at the Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield following a long illness. He was born in Baileyville (Woodland), ME. March 14, 1923 the son of Paul Gray and Matilda Wright. He was educated in the schools of Baileyville and Pittsfield. Robert was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War serving with the US Army. He married Barbara D. Cole of Pittsfield in 1947 and they moved to Detroit in 1956 where they have resided since that time.
He worked for Northeast Shoe Company of Pittsfield and The Edwards Co. Also of Pittsfield. Robert was very active in his community. He helped found the Department of Parks & Recreation and could be found Coaching and Umpiring Baseball from, 1978-1985. Robert held positions on the Town Budget Committee, he served on the Shoreland Zoning Board, was Town Constable from 1983-1990, Animal Control Officer from 1983-1986, served on the Septic Waste Disposal Site Committee. Captain Wright was one of founding members of the Detroit Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by His Wife, Barbara D. Wright, a Brother James W. Steeves of Albequerqe New Mexico, three sons, Robert J. Wright and wife Susan of Clinton, Paul D. Wright of Detroit and David S. Wright and wife Laurie also of Detroit. 10 Grandchildren and 13 Great grandchildren.
He is predeceased by son James W. Wright.
Graveside services will be held later in the spring at the Detroit Village cemetery. At the request of the family there are no visitation hours or funeral service.

David LeRoy Buck

LINCOLN - David LeRoy Buck was reunited with his Lord, Tuesday, March 24, 2009, when he passed unexpectedly at his home. David was born Sept. 10, 1940, to two loving parents, Phyllis M. (Bates) Buck and Myron Kimball Buck. He graduated salutatorian of Mattanawcook Academy, Class of 1958. After attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, for two years, he returned home and married Dianne Greene, his cherished wife of 47 years. David worked as co-owner of Buck Motors, Inc., for several years and became the devoted father of two children, Kimberly Anne Russell and Johanna Kathryn Purdue. With the loving support of his wife, David continued his education and in May 1974, he graduated with highest distinction from the University of Maine, Orono with a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education. The family moved to Milo and David began a lifelong dream of teaching English at Foxcroft Academy, a dream that lasted 22 years and served hundreds of students. He retired in 1995. In 1989, David and Dianne became parents once more when they hosted a foreign exchange student from Mito, Japan. David served as committee member and leader of Boy Scouts of America, Troop No. 50. He was proud to be a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. Along with his wife, he became a privileged member of SOIOP - Society of Old Ivory and Ohme Porcelain, and they planned their yearly vacation around SOIOP conventions across the U.S. He was an avid sportsman and an unregistered Maine guide long before the term was invented. Together, with his wife and daughters, he will be greatly mourned by his adopted daughter, Katie of Mito, Japan; his sister/cousin, Donna (Bates) Boone and her husband, Chris, of Bishop, Calif.; his grandchildren, Mary Anna Russell, Donald O'Dell Russell and Brenna Elyse Russell of Pittsfield, James Joseph McGuinness IV, Paige Grace McGuinness of Milo, and Meghan Elizabeth McGuinness, currently serving in the U.S. Navy in Virginia and mother of his great-grandchild, Christopher Ayden McGuinness. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Angel W. Russell. He leaves behind a legacy of caring, teaching, learning and random acts of kindness. Friends called 2-4 and 7-9 PM Thursday, March 26th, at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Funeral services were held 2 PM Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Darrell Joiner officiating. Spring interment will be at Lincoln cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made on his behalf to Penobscot Valley Humane Society, P.O. Box 73, Lincoln, ME 04457.

Stephen A. Sawyer

DEXTER - Stephen Arnold Sawyer, 49, passed away March 20, 2009 at his residence surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born March 14, 1960 in Dexter a son of Arnold and Glenda (York) Sawyer. He graduated from Dexter Regional High School, Class of 1978. He was employed for 18 years at Dexter Shoe Company and later, was employed at Toot’s Delicatessen until his retirement due to failing health. Steve will be remembered as an avid Boston Red Sox fan, enjoyed coaching Little League in Dexter, as well as serving as timekeeper for high school soccer games for a number of years. He married the former Heidi Fanjoy. In addition to his wife of Dexter and parents of Harmony, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Carolyn Reed of Harmony; 2 sons, Tyler of Bangor, and Chad of Dexter; a brother, Vincent and wife Tina of Dexter; and a sister, Karen and husband Richard Andrews of Gorham; 2 nephews, Derek and Mitchell, and a niece, Avery. His family remembers him as a great dad that courageously battled his illness, especially in recent months as his condition worsened after surviving a lung transplant for nearly 3 years.
Friends called from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday, March 24th, at Crosby & Neal, 61 Main Street, Dexter. A spring graveside committal service will be held at Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Dexter, with the Rev. William Walters officiating. Contributions may be made to the Stephen A. Sawyer Memorial Scholarship to benefit student athletes, c/o Dexter Regional High School, 12 Abbott Hill Road, Dexter, ME 04930.

Nettie M. Thompson

CORINNA - Nettie M. Thompson, 85, died unexpectedly March 13th, 2009 at a Bangor hospital. She was born March 21st, 1923 in Brewer, the daughter of Earl and Vesta (Giles) Morey. She attended Exeter schools and had been an employee of Eastland Woolen in Corinna. Nettie greatly enjoyed sewing, reading and playing games.
She is survived by two sons, Keith Thompson and his wife, Betty of Portland and Stephen Thompson of Corinna; her daughters, Coralyn Levasseur of Millinocket, Jolene Colbath of Corinna and a special daughter, Beth Thompson of Portland; 15 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Lillian Saunders of Corinna and Beverly Grant of Tolland, CT; a special sister in law, Louise Morey of Millinocket. Nettie was predeceased by a son, Ralph Earl Thompson.
Graveside memorial services will be held at Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Dexter in the spring. Cremation arrangements are by the Thompson Funeral Home, 30 St. Albans Road, Corinna.
