Keith Albert Batchelder

ABBOT - Keith Albert Batchelder, 78, passed on to be with the Lord Jesus, April 4th, 2010. Keith was at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor at the time of his passing and was surrounded by loved ones. He was born October 1st, 1931 in Stetson, son of Norman and Elsie (Blaisdell) Batchelder.
Keith was very proud to have served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Harveson.
He worked at the Irving Tannery in Hartland for many years. He really enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, wildlife, and bird watching. He very much loved his family and held very dear his friends.
Keith was predeceased by his beloved wife of 48 years, Arlene (Russell) Batchelder, and a brother, David Batchelder.
He is survived by a son and his wife, Keith Philip and Deborah Batchelder of Abbot; a foster daughter, Mary Manson of Palmyra; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren; two sisters, Theralin Leavitt and her husband, Earl of Palmyra, and Dorothy Turner and her husband, Hubert of Phippsburg; three brothers, Gary Batchelder of Palmyra, Maurice Batchelder and his wife, Peggy, of Hartland, and Thomas Batchelder and his wife, Joyce, of Skowhegan; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A graveside memorial service with Military Honors will be held at 4 PM, Friday, April 23rd, 2010 at the Corinna Village cemetery with Pastor Jesse Stubblefield officiating.

Linwood L. Sinclair

CORINNA - Linwood L. “Shorty” Sinclair 86, husband of Edith (Shannon) Sinclair went to be with his beloved sons on April 11, 2010 at a Pittsfield hospital. Linwood was born in Pittsfield, July, 12 1023 the son of Elwood and Nesta (Turner) Sinclair. He attended Pittsfield schools and graduated from M.C. I. in 1941. He was an Army veteran of WW II serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater as a Radar Tech / Crewman. Linwood worked in the textile industry for 28 years in Corinna for Eastland Woolen Mill and retired from Carlton Woolen in Gardner in 1987. He enjoyed spending many summers at his camp on Unity Pond. He was a life member of American Legion Post #73 in Corinna, a member of Parian Masonic Lodge #160 AF & AM of Corinna, and a member of Nokomis Chapter Order of the Eastern Star Newport. Linwood is survived by his wife of 67 years Edith (Shannon) Sinclair of Corinna, 2 daughters-in-law, Sandra Sinclair of Dexter, Jacquelyn Sinclair of Etna, four brothers; Merlin Sinclair of Florida, Elwood Sinclair Jr. of Detroit, Wayne Sinclair, and Laurice Sinclair both of Pittsfield, one granddaughter, Joy Lynn Sinclair of Bangor, one grandson, James Sinclair of Corinna, 2 great granddaughters, 1 great grandson, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Linwood was predeceased by his beloved two sons, Galen and Gary, his sister Phyllis Humphrey, 3 brothers, Merle, Glyndon, and Herschel. Graveside committal services for Linwood and his son Gary will be conducted 11 AM Saturday, May 1, 2010 at Morse’s Corner cemetery Corinna. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the “Make a Wish Foundation of Maine, 87 Elm Street Suite 203, Camden, ME 04843. Lillian Y. Saunders

CORINNA - Lillian Y. Saunders, 71, traveled her path to meet with the Lord as she peacefully passed, April 14, 2010, with her loving family at her side. Lillian was born July 25, 1938 a daughter of the late Edwin and Vesta (Giles) Witham.
Lillian grew up in Dexter, and married at the tender age of 17. She and her former husband, James “Bill” Saunders, worked and raised their family together on the family farm in Corinna. Lillian was employed at local woolen mills and helped raise her two granddaughters. Lillian later moved to Guilford and became a member of the Guilford United Methodist Church. She met a special friend there, Jerald Melia, with whom she spent her remaining years. Lillian received her General Education Diploma in 1993, concurrently with her granddaughters, who achieved their Associates Degree and High School Diplomas. She returned to Corinna to be near her family and became a member of the Corinna United Methodist Church, where she made many new friends.
Lillian is remembered as a caring, nurturing, and funny woman who gave unselfishly of herself. She welcomed many people into her heart, where they too could share the warmth of her love. Lillian brought a sense of home into every life she touched, from those of her childhood, on the farm, of her family, and in her church. The remembrance of her giggles, her smiles, her crazy antics, her love for observing nature and peaceful cool summer days will forever be in the hearts of the ones who love her.
Lillian is survived by her devoted friend of over 20 years, Jerald Melia of Corinna; former husband and father to her children, James “Bill” Saunders; her loving children, Janice Day and husband Michael, Edwin “Butch” Saunders and wife Julie; 3 Grandchildren, Rhonda Shaw and husband William, Shelia Richard and husband Moses, and Patrick Saunders; 5 great grandchildren, Tyler Richard-Wilson, Cody Shaw, Alexis Richard, Carter Shaw, and Kadence Richard, all of Corinna. She is survived by a sister, Beverly Grant and husband David.
She was predeceased by a great grandson Eric Kyle Dexter; 3 brothers, Edward, Wilfred and Earl Morey; and 3 sisters, Nettie Thompson, Louise Cross, and Frances Kelton.
A service honoring her life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 19th, at the Corinna United Methodist Church, 16 Dexter Road, Corinna, with the Rev. Grace Mazhandu officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant cemetery in Dexter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Corinna United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 418, Corinna, ME 04928.

Anna M. Graig

HARTLAND - Anna M. Craig, 86, died March 20, 2010 at her Ford Hill Road residence. She was born September 27, 1923 in Malden, MA a daughter of Charles and Anna (Nilsson) Maurer. After graduating from high school she attended Radcliffe College for 3 years and Simmons College for 1 year.
She is survived by her son Edward and his wife Carlene of Hartland; a brother, Charles, Jr. and his wife Alice Maurer of Dover, NH; 7 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild. She was predeceased by a daughter Nancy Craig, who died July 30, 2008. There will be no local services. Burial will be at Horse Meadow cemetery, Haverhill, NH, at a later date. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport.

Cherylee Dale Call

TROY - Cherylee Dale Call, 62 of Troy, passed away at her residence surrounded by her family on March 18, 2010. She was born, the daughter of Vernon and June (Stewart) Bagley, Sr, on June 30, 1948 in Liberty. Cherylee had a caregiver’s heart which drew her to her choice of career as a certified nurse’s assistant. She nursed for over 20 years at Lakewood Manor in Waterville, a division of Inland Hospital. Some of the things Cherylee enjoyed most in her life included camping with her husband where she was “Queen” of the camp, tending her many beautiful flower gardens and “her boy” - their black lab “Buck”. She will be remembered for her fiery redhead spirit, as a strong woman, compassionate wife, dedicated mother and homemaker.
She is predeceased by her mother, her brother and her oldest son, Kevin VonOesen. She is survived by her loving husband, George Call of Troy; her son Jamie VonOesen and wife Susie of Unity; her father Vernon Bagley, Sr.; a brother Vernon “Kip” Bagley Jr. and wife Kathy of Unity; four grandchildren, Shawn Michael, Jordan Rose, Shane William, Tyler James VonOesen; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many close friends.

Edward L. Laughton

Hartland - Edward L. Laughton, 96, died peacefully on Thursday, March 11, 2010, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Ripley, Maine on April 8, 1913, the son of John and Emma (Merrill) Laughton. He graduated from Maine Central Institute with the class of 1932, married Marian Wyman and together they raised their 4 children.
Ed was employed for many years by the Irving Tanning Company in Hartland. He had also worked for the Baxter Canning Factory and did some bridge construction. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, the Couples Club and the Corinthian Masonic Lodge No 95, AF & AM. He was a town selectman for 24 years, volunteered on the Hartland Fire Department and was a member of the Grace Linn Memorial United Methodist Church.
He enjoyed baseball and was on the town team for 12 years. During his MCI days he ran track and played basketball and football with great distinction.
He is survived by his children, Sherman Laughton and his wife, Jeanne, of Vermont, Nelson Laughton and his wife, Ann, of Maryland and Barbara Dunn and her husband, Robert, of Massachusetts; his grandchildren, Michael Dunn, Andrew Dunn, Joe Laughton and his wife, Marianne, Cheryl Garcia and her husband, Randy, Matt Laughton, Kenton Whalen and his wife, Allyson, Kevin Laughton and his wife, Jennifer, Amanda Korpon and her husband, Nik and Jeffrey Laughton; great grandchildren, Maris, Leif, Luke and Nathan; his sister, Adelma Seavey of Ripley; his brother, Andrew Laughton of Florida and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Marian Laughton and his daughter, Edwina Hardy.
The family received friends from 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday, March 14th, 2010 with a funeral service that immediately followed at 3 p.m. at the Grace Linn Memorial United Methodist Church, 8 Seekins Street in Hartland with the Rev. Jim Boughman. A time of refreshment followed in the fellowship hall.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Linn Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 663, Hartland, Maine, 04943 or to the Hartland Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 280, Hartland, Maine, 04943, in Ed’s memory.

Marilyn E. (Bennett) Merrill

Pittsfield - Marilyn E. (Bennett) Merrill, 81, died peacefully on Saturday, March 13, 2010, in Pittsfield.
Betty was born in Presque Isle, Maine on December 27, 1928, the daughter of Ottis Stoddard and Laura Mae Smith. She was a homemaker for all of her life and had been a resident of the Pittsfield Community Home for the last 4 years. She enjoyed knitting, crossword puzzles and crafts.
She is survived by her children; Linda, Kathy, Cynthia, Jeannie, Judy Frost and her husband, Dave, Mike Bennett who looked after mom for many years as only a loving son could, and his wife, Donna, Russell Bennett, Debbie Currier and her husband, Donald, Robert Bennett, Tina Murry, Shawn LaCasse and his wife, Jamie; her grandchildren, Desiree, Danielle, Jeffrey, Matthew, Jess, Heather, Ashley, Mikayla, Kierra, Korrie, Shawn II; great grandchildren, Hunter, Madison, Mercedes and Hailey, a special friend, Avon Roberts and a very special friend, who was like a sister, Donna Lovely.
She was predeceased by her son, Richard J. Bennett, Jr., her late husband, Larry Merrill and their beloved dog, Missy, and a very special companion of 37 years, Henri LaCasse.
Services will be private.
Care for the family has been provided by Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, Pittsfield.

Carol Jean “Jeannie” Nichols

PALMYRA - Carol Jean Nichols, 67, died peacefully on Monday, March 1, 2010. She was born May 29, 1942 in Pittsfield a daughter of Caroll and Erma (Ross) Emery. Known to all as Jeannie Nichols, she was educated in Pittsfield schools, worked locally at several area businesses, and enjoyed marketing Avon products her entire life. She loved the Maine coast in summer, family camping trips to the Camden Hills, her flower gardens, shopping and travel. She had been on several Caribbean cruises, many trips to Florida and had recently vacationed in Las Vegas.
Jeannie will be remembered as a compassionate, giving, unselfish person who put the needs of others ahead of her own. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by brothers Kenneth and Lawrence, and sisters Dorothy, Evelyn, Frances, Nena and Glenice.
Jeannie is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Paul Nichols; her daughter, Lisa Martin and husband Jason of Waterville; sons Timothy Nichols and wife Dale, and James Nichols, all of Pittsfield; Paul Nichols, Jr. and wife Camille of Lithia, FL; 12 grandchildren, Tammy, Tim, Decker, Matthew, Jessica, Amanda, Sean, Shannon, Jeannie, Joanna, Hailey and Hunter; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a special niece, Georgie Farrin, whom Jeannie loved dearly.
It was her request that no funeral service be held. There will be a family gathering at a later date in order to remember her life. Cremation arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. Those who wish may leave written condolences at www.CrosbyNeal.com

Henrietta (Lois) Merrithew Mason

Gardiner - Henrietta (Lois) Merrithew Mason, 86, formerly of Gardiner died Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough. She was born in Bath on Dec. 31, 1923 a daughter of William and Charlotte Rines Morrell.
Lois was a graduate of Gardiner High School the Class of 1942. She had been employed in area shoe factories and for Bill & Fred’s Laundry in Gardiner. She was a former member and past president of the Gardiner Emblem Club. Lois also worked as a CNA in nursing homes in Texas. She and her husband Arthur Mason while in New Braunfels, Texas ran a ceramic shop. She relocated back to Maine in 1995 to be with her son. Lois was the first woman to be hired at Bath Iron Works during World War II.
Lois was predeceased by her first husband of 32 years, Fred Merrithew and her second husband of 19 years Arthur Mason.
She is survived by her 2 children, Irvin Merrithew and his wife Geraldine of Old Orchard, Lois Labbe and her partner Thomas Roberts of Pittsfield, 2 step children, Janice Neil and Glenda Tarr both of Brunswick, a sister, Catherine Trask and her husband Herbert of Windsor, 6 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Oak Grove cemetery in Gardiner.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Gosnell Hospice House 11 Hunnewell Street, Scarborough, ME 04074.
Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home 53 Brunswick Ave. Gardiner.

Dorothy D. Nickerson

Newport - Dorothy D. Nickerson 97 died peacefully Feb. 20, 2010 at a Pittsfield health care facility following a short illness. She was born in Newport July 10, 1912 the daughter of Bertrand and Alena (Annett) Rowe She graduated in the class of 1932 from Newport High School. Dorothy was a long time member of the High Street Congregational Church in Newport. Dorothy was married to Howard Nickerson Sr. who died on March 28, 1978. For many years she worked at Snowflake Canning Co. in Corinna until it burnt. She then went to work at Edwards Co. in Pittsfield and retired there following many years of service to the Company. She also worked at the hot lunch program at Nokomis High School. Dorothy volunteered at the Newport Food Bank and at Meals for Me in Newport. She was a member of the Sebasticook, Pomona, State, and National Granges, a member of the Newport Senior Citizens, and Newport Ladies Craft Club. She loved to work in her flower gardens. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting for her family and friends. She is survived by one son and his wife Bertrand and Sandra Nickerson of Newport, one daughter and her husband Joan and Bernard Marriner of Newport, a sister Evelyn Baldwin of Gorham Also surviving her and living close by are 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren, whom she deeply loved to have visit her, several nieces and nephews. Beside her husband Howard she is predeceased by a son Howard Nickerson Jr., four brothers, three sisters, a loving step-mother, Helena Downs Rowe, and a step-brother. Friends called Tuesday, February 23, 2010 from 1 to 2 PM at the Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center 34 High Street, Newport, where funeral services followed at 2 PM with Rev. Ernie Campbell pastor of the High Street Congregational Church officiating. Spring internment will be at Riverside cemetery Newport. Friends who wish may make memorial donations to the High Street Congregational Church Memorial Fund, 24 High Street, Newport, Maine 04953.

Ruth V. Candage

LEVANT - Ruth Viola Candage, 77, went to be with her Lord peacefully on February 21, 2010. She was born October 6, 1932 in Bar Harbor a daughter of Malcolm and Ina (Butler) Salisbury, Sr. She graduated from Bar Harbor High School, Class of 1950 and became a wife and mother of three children. Ruth was active in their lives as a member of the PTA, a leader in 4-H and the Girl Scouts, and was a Cub Scout den mother for many years. She and her husband raised White Faced Herefords donating many to the Baby Beef Club. She also enjoyed showing White Faced Herefords at many state fairs. After she could no longer raise them she developed a deep love and friendship with her Border Collie Princess...a shadow at her heels, they were rarely seen apart. Princess would lay at her feet for hours as she fervently knit the many mittens and socks for family and friends. She was always a fanatic about making sure the “great white hunters” had plenty of food at lunch time. She never seemed to mind. She loved working in her vegetable and flower gardens, enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels, and watching them each day.
Patrons of the M & M and Killarney’s restaurants in Bangor will remember Ruth as a caring waitress who made their visits special. She enjoyed working for many years with her friend and fellow waitress, Alice Poor. The two continued a strong bond well into retirement. Coming into her life much later but bringing Ruth a special friendship and a new peace with her God are friends Rose and David. A special thanks to them for the many Saturday visits and mid week calls. Also a special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Brian Call and Ricky Call who frequently went above and beyond their normal relationship as a neighbor. Thanks also to Dana Crockett who helped Ruth through the many hardships and frustrations of owning a business after her husband passed away.
She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Donald P. Candage, Sr.; her brother Wellington Salisbury, and a sister Herthel Strout.
Ruth is survived by 3 children, Donald Candage, Jr. and wife Brenda of Carmel; Donna Goodspeed and husband Robert, Jr. also of Carmel; and Dennis Candage and fiancée Sheri of Exeter; 7 grandchildren, Craig Goodspeed and wife Amber, Donald “Bucky” Candage and wife Angie, Danika Salah and husband Sam, Amanda Hay and husband Brandon, Joseph Goodspeed and wife Miranda, Stanley Candage and wife Melissa, Robbie Goodspeed and girlfriend Danielle; 11 great grandchildren, Bradley, Brooke, Breanna, Munira, Ibrahim, Zeyad, Abbie, Elijah, Michael, Willow and Madison.
She is also survived by 3 sisters, Virginia, Carolyn, and Annie; and a brother Malcolm, Jr.; as well as many nieces and nephews; as well as special hunters, Rob Green and Vaughn and Donna Douchette.
A memorial service was held at 11 AM Thursday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. Spring interment will be in the Waugh cemetery, Levant. Memorial donations may be made to the Bangor Humane Society, 693B Mt. Hope Avenue, Bangor, ME 04401.
