Anna Z. Morris

1925-2003

LEEDS — Anna Z. Morris, 77, of Leeds died unexpectedly at her home, Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003.

She was born in Millinocket, Sept. 1, 1925, the daughter of Michael and Mary (Giannandrea) Zingo. She was a 1943 graduate of Winthrop High School.

On July 15, 1950, she married Roger L. Morris of Leeds. They resided in Winthrop and Wayne before moving to their new home in Leeds in 1991.

She worked for Edwards Manufacturing Co. in Augusta for many years, and was in charge of the supply room there. Anna made many friends during her career and was always interested in people and keeping in touch with acquaintances. In Wayne, Anna became an accomplished gardener and raised beautiful lilies, roses and irises. She continued her hobby in Leeds and took great pleasure and satisfaction in continuing to landscape the grounds of her new home. For a time she was a member of the Wayne Area Garden Club. She traveled to California and Hawaii and enjoyed seeing the West Coast and the islands. Anna loved all animals, but her cats were her favorites; she was very devoted to their health and comfort. Ginnie and Cindy will mourn her loss.

She was involved with her classmates from Winthrop High and was active on the class reunion committee. Anna was the family historian and kept perfectly organized books of records of family, friends and those people she "knew" in the press. She could always solve mysteries involving dates or family members by consulting her library of information. She was a good and kind person who treated others respectfully and generously. She will be missed deeply by her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Roger of Leeds; also sisters Victoria Moody and her husband, Charles, of Livermore Falls, Carol Roberts and her husband, Larry, of Winthrop, and Joanne Bickford and her husband, Ralph, of Monmouth; brothers-in-law Malcolm "Mac" Morris and his wife, Nancy, of Livermore Falls, and Wayne Morris and his wife, Sheila, of North Turner; an aunt, Eunice DePiano of Jersey City, N.J.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents.

Visiting hours are 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home, 707 Main St., Monmouth, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12. Interment will be in the spring at River Grove Cemetery, Leeds.

Condolences may be emailed to bfinley@prexar.com.

Charles W. Allen

1912-2003

FALMOUTH — Charles W. Allen, 90, died Feb. 7, 2003, at Falmouth By The Sea in Falmouth.

He was born in Portland, Nov. 14, 1912, the son of Neal W. Allen and Margaret Stevens Allen.

He was a distinguished attorney, a member and chairman of the Portland City Council, an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War and an active citizen who contributed his time and talents to many worthwhile organizations.

Mr. Allen attended Portland public schools. He graduated from Deering High School in 1930 and from Bowdoin College in 1934. He was an outstanding hurdler and middle-distance runner in both high school and college. He graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1937, and for the next four years practiced law at Sullivan and Cromwell in New York City.

After the Pearl Harbor attack, Mr. Allen enlisted in the Navy. He belonged to a Navy Seabee unit that constructed and operated airfields in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He finished active duty as a lieutenant commander in December 1945.

After the war, he had a distinguished legal career at Pierce Atwood in Portland, concentrating in municipal and corporate bond work. From 1945 until the early 1990s, when he had given up most of his practice, he valued his friends and colleagues at the law firm, including his able assistant for several decades, Recia Richman.

Mr. Allen was an active member of many organizations. He served on the Portland City Council from 1964 to 1970 and as its chairman from 1965 to 1966. Mr. Allen was a trustee of Portland Savings Bank and a trustee and treasurer of Bowdoin College and Hebron Academy.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was an advocate for peace, both as an anti-war activist — an unusual role for a corporate attorney — and a member and chairman of the Portland chapter of SANE.

He is remembered as a loving father, an active citizen, a generous contributor to a variety of causes and a man of great integrity.

He was predeceased in May 2001 by his wife, Genevieve "Sukey" Lahee Allen, to whom he was married for 64 years and with whom he raised three children.
