Paul Joseph Pepin

NEWPORT - Paul J. Pepin, 80, went to be with our Lord on November 20, 2010 peacefully at his residence. He was born December 20, 1929 in Rumford, a son of Paul and Alma (Hebert) Pepin. Paul graduated from Stephens High School in 1949 where he was a top athlete playing basketball, baseball and football. He later played in the semi-pro baseball league. Following high school, he worked for one year in Connecticut before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the Battleship U.S.S. New Jersey (the most decorated battleship in naval history) during the Korean War and was the recipient of the Korean Occupational Ribbon, three battle stars, and the Korean Presidential Unit of Citation, among others. He returned to school after his discharge and graduated from M.C.I. Preparatory School in 1955 and the University of Maine, Orono, in 1959. On February 25, 1956, he married Joyce Holman of Dixfield. He taught school and coached in Searsport for two years before moving to Newport in 1961. While coaching in Searsport, his boys’ basketball team won the Waldo County Regional Playoffs in the Bangor Auditorium. He was so respected by his students, they dedicated the yearbook to him when he left. Paul was a science teacher at Newport High School and Nokomis Regional High from 1961 until his retirement in 1992. He coached boys’ basketball at Newport High School and girls’ softball championship teams at Nokomis. He coached girls’ basketball for 6 years. The first three years, there were no girls’ tournaments but his team won the Penquis League Championship two of the three years, with a 3-year record of 52 and 3. The following three years, they participated in the Bangor tournament all three years.
Paul was a communicant of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Pittsfield, a part time usher, a life long member and past Deputy Grand, Knights of Columbus, a member of V.F.W. Post 11191 and had been active in the past as a member of the Parish Council, C.C.D. Teacher, head of the Catholic Youth Organization, was a Cub Scout Committee member, coached Little League Baseball and P.A.L. Basketball Championship Teams, and was a volunteer at the Sebasticook Valley Community Center.
Paul was a homebody and enjoyed family, camping trips, sports, fishing, painting, computer games, crossword puzzles, his pets, coaching, and teaching. One of his greatest rewards was when former students visited him and told him what a difference he had made in their lives. He said if he could reach even one student, it made it all worthwhileand he did reach many. He was a good man and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by 2 sons, Michael Pepin of Oakland and David Pepin of Newport; 2 daughters and their husbands, Cheryl and Francis Gonzalez of Newport and Sandi and Brett Crosby of Hermon; 6 grandsons, Christopher and wife Jinger Pepin, Jeremy Pepin, Kyle Pepin, Nick Gonzalez, Tony Gonzalez, and Andrew Crosby; 5 granddaughters, Kristina Gonzalez, Kerianne Pepin, Katie Crosby, Rachelle Pepin, and Brianna Pepin; 2 great grandsons, Silas and Hayden Pepin; 2 great grand daughters, Natalea Pepin and Faith Neans; a sister, Anita Goudreau of Quebec, Canada; and a brother Roger Pepin of Rumford. Paul was predeceased by his wife Joyce on June 10, 2009.
Funeral services were held 2 PM Wednesday, November 24th, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, with the Rev. Fr. Kent Ouellette officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside cemetery, Newport. Those who wish may leave written tributes at www.CrosbyNeal.com

Paul S. McCue

NEWPORT & HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Paul S. McCue, 63, died November 17, 2010 following a brief illness at a Bangor hospital. He was born September 20, 1947 in Newton, Massachusetts a son of Paul J. and Marion (Stewart) McCue. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and was awarded two Bronze Stars. He retired as an engineer with MCI Worldcom in Texas. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and landscaping. He will be remembered for his beautiful landscaped waterfalls.
Paul is survived by his wife, Janice of Newport; a son David and wife Kathy Walker of South Carolina; a daughter Sharlene Nyman of Texas; 3 brothers, Timothy and wife Donna McCue of Framingham, MA, Gary McCue of Newport and Mark “Marty” and wife Kimberly McCue of Newport; a sister, MaryEllen McCue of Newport; 3 granddaughters Ashley McCue, Lacey and Kaitlynn Nyman; 2 grandsons, David Walker, Jr. and Andrew Walker; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother Robert McCue.
Funeral services were held 2 PM Sunday, November 21st at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Friends called from noon until time of services. A military committal and burial service will be held at a later date. Those who wish may contribute in his memory to the Bangor Humane Society, 693B Mt. Hope Avenue, Bangor, ME 04401.

Edith A. Goodwin

CARMEL & DOVER-FOXCROFT - Edith A. Goodwin, 80, died November 23, 2010 at her residence. She was born May 3, 1930 in Exeter, a daughter of Frank and Ella (Batchelder) Call. She was a self-employed housekeeper. Edith was a member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Bangor and the Star in the East Chapter #17 OES in Hampden.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Linda and husband Tyrone Spratt of Glenburn and Deborah and husband Ronald Kaulfers of Middleburg, FL; 2 brothers, Charles Call of NH and Cedric Call of FL; 4 grandchildren, Tyrone Spratt II, Teresa Spratt, Cheri Authement and Shaun Kaulfers; 5 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Melvin in 1999.
Friends called from 6 to 8 PM Sunday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. Graveside funeral and committal services will be held 1 PM Monday, November 29th at the family lot, Riverside cemetery, Newport. Those who wish may leave written tributes at www.CrosbyNeal.com

Cynthia Hamilton

PITTSFIELD - Cynthia Hamilton died on Saturday, April 9th in Pittsfield.
Cynthia (Pat) was born in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts to parents William T. and Nellie (Redman) Picken. Cynthia attended Chelmsford High School and graduated with honors. While in high school she was captain of the basketball team, and head cheerleader. Pat also was member of the Paint and Powder Club and worthy advisor of Rainbow Assembly #39 in Lowell, Massachusetts.
After high school Pat went on to attend Westbrook Junior College. While there she was chosen to represent the college at the first gathering of junior colleges held at the University Club in Boston, MA. After college, Pat went on to attend and graduate from the Boston School of X-Ray Technique. She worked as an X-ray technician until 1945 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lowell, Massachusetts.
In 1945 Pat met and married the love of her life, Arthur T. Hamilton. Pat’s life in Pittsfield, Maine began. She became a Girl Scout leader in 1947 and directed the first Girl Scout Follies. She stayed active in this organization for (25) years, wearing many hats as leader, and trainer of leaders, representing the Abanaki Council at a national convention in Miami, Florida. She trained Girl Scout troops in two Girl Scout Round-Ups one in Button Bay and the other in Farragut, Idaho.
Pat had the distinction of being elected president of the Pittsfield Arts Club and stayed active in this club for many years. She also was a member of the Pittsfield Tuesday Club. She helped to set up the Pinnacle Ski Club snack bar and served on its board of directors. She helped raise funds to bring youth audiences from New York City to Pittsfield schools for concerts and music appreciation. Pat was one of the leaders to help organize the first P.T.A. and was its first secretary. Pat was a member of the Sebasticook Valley Hospital Auxiliary. When Sebasticook Valley Hospital was built, Pat served as a substitute in the x-ray and lab departments. Being a skilled seamstress she went on to establish The House of Hamilton bridal consulting. She enjoyed working with the young brides and their families for their special day. Pat was also very proud of being a member of the Universalist Church where she sang in the choir, taught classes and became the superintendent of their Sunday school program.
In 1971 Pat was asked to help with the Pittsfield school lunch program for a year until they could find a new director. That lasted for (10) years and the hot lunch program, under her direction, grew as the children really loved her lunches especially pizza day!
Pat and her husband Arthur traveled to many areas of the world and always came back with many stories to regale the family with. When not traveling, the family enjoyed summers at either Big Indian Lake in St. Albans or at the family beach house in Marshfield, Massachusetts. In later years, they enjoyed their winters in Florida.
Pat is survived by her daughter’s Britta Cote of Farmington and Bretta Hamilton of Pittsfield; her son’s, Brek and his wife Barbara of Pittsfield and Brik and his wife Susan of Clinton. (7) Grandchildren, Hollee Fraser and her husband Bruce of Farmington, Heather Jabar and her husband Jason of Belgrade, Christine and Jenny Hamilton of Clinton, Eric Hamilton and his fiancée’ Melissa of Pittsfield, Billy Laverdiere of Portland and Darren Pollo of Clinton. (9) great grandchildren, Brandon Walker, Jeromy Bingham, Billy Laverdiere, Davin Pollo, Nicholas and Whitney Fraser and Jackson, Giselle and Lauren Jabar and (1) great-great grandson, Luc Walker as well as a niece Cindy and nephew, Peter and their families. Pat was predeceased by her husband Arthur in 2001 and her brother Robert Picken.
Special thanks to the many caregivers Pat had during her illness, especially Ruth and Edie at Sebasticook Valley Hospital.
A celebration of Pat’s life will be held at the Universalist Church in Pittsfield on Saturday, April 30th at 10:30 a.m.

Melvin L. Waning

DIXMONT - Melvin L. Waning, 77, died April 12, 2011, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. He was born in Dixmont, July 9, 1933, son of Earl and Mary (Murphy) Waning.
Melvin served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a car salesman for T.W. Clark for several years, until illness forced his retirement. He was very involved with horse pulling and was a member of the Maine Draft Horse Association.
He is survived by his wife, Janet (Norris) Waning of Dixmont; 2 sons, Dale Waning and Lance Waning, both of Dixmont; 2 daughters and their husbands, Linda and Leslie Basford of Burnham, and Toni and Doug Nichols of Plymouth; 1 grandson, Josh Knowlton of Fairfield; a brother, Richard Waning and his wife, Tracy of Carmel; special sister-in-law, Joyce Waning of Plymouth; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and a brother, Raymond Waning.

Gordon W. Woodman

ST. ALBANS - Gordon W. Woodman, 74, died peacefully on April 11th, 2011, at his home in St. Albans. He was born on July 12, 1936, in St. Albans, the son of the late Fred and Myrtle (Hunt) Woodman.
Gordon was employed by the Irving Tannery in Hartland for over 40 years. He also served as a deputy for Somerset County. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling and playing golf. He also liked playing cards with family and friends. The family has many happy memories of spending time together at their hunting camp in St. Albans.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Joan Woodman, of St. Albans; his children, Richard Woodman and his wife, Christina, of Hartland, Sheryl Madore and her fiancé, James Henry, of Skowhegan and David Woodman and his wife, Kelly, of Pittsfield; 10 grandchildren, Holli and her husband, Glen Carmichael, Britany, Keasha, Justin, Garrett, Brandon and his wife, Brandi Woodman, Aaron, Ethan and his fiancée, Courtney Lougee, Kylie and Ryan; 6 great grandchildren, Tristan, Isaac, Leatisha, Lacie, Haley and Kaelynn; his siblings, Clifton Woodman and his companion, Alma Field, of Detroit, Alpine Taylor and her companion, Frank, of Veazie, Reginald Woodman and his wife, Caroline, of Skowhegan, Verda Wilson and her husband, Lynwood, of Florida and Florence Grignon and her husband, Edward, of St. Albans.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 PM, Friday, April 15th, 2011, at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield. A memorial service took place at 11 AM, Saturday, April 16th, 2011, at the funeral home with the Rev. Leonard Reiss officiating. A gathering was held immediately after the memorial service at the St. Albans Union Church in St. Albans.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 51 US Route 1, Suite, M, Scarborough, Maine, 04074, in Gordon’s memory.
Care for the family has been provided by Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, Pittsfield.

Milton M. Brockway

NEWPORT - Milton M. Brockway, 69, died April 13th, 2011 at his residence. He was born June 13th, 1941 in Corinth, the son of Dana and Vivian (Leclair) Brockway. He served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War and had been employed as a freight truck driver for 41 years, logging over 3 million miles.
Milton was very proud of his 26 years of sobriety and his many friends at AA. He loved riding his motorcycles with his boys; enjoyed NASCAR and his favorite driver Jeff Gordon, and thoroughly loved his family.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Sandra Brockway of Newport; 4 children, Michael and wife Linda Brockway of Newport, Michelle Hoff of Florida, Laura Brockway of Newport, and Douglas and wife Raquel Brockway of Newport; 3 sisters, Barbara Cloutier of Corinna, Phyllis Clukey of Florida, and Doris Young of Bangor; grandchildren, Kristen, Jordan, Angela, Michael, Anthony, Jenna, Brittany, Jill, Macy, Edison and Nirvana; 2 great grandsons, Gavin and Bentley; nieces and nephews; and his faithful dog, Rascal. He was predeceased by a brother, Donald, a baby brother Dana; and a sister Beverly Rancourt.
A memorial service was held at 1 PM on Saturday, April 16th at the Peoples United Methodist Church, 131 Main Street, Newport with the Rev. Ellen Bridge officiating. Burial will be held later at the Morse’s Corner cemetery, Corinna. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Peoples United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 182, Newport, ME 04953.
Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport.

Arthur C. Graves

ETNA - Arthur C. Graves, 69, died March 24, 2011 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Togus. He was born October 17, 1941 in Hartland, a son of Kenneth W. and Arlene (Peterson) Graves. He graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1960 and went to work for Sargent Construction. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX, where he met and married Cheryl Roberts.
Arthur worked hard at his paving, snowplowing, and logging transportation businesses. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Above all, Art was a much beloved father, grandfather and friend. He was known to calm even the most distressed of young children just by sitting them on his lap.
He is survived by his mother of Pittsfield; 3 daughters and their husbands, Debbie and Mark Tasker of Etna, Diane and Nick Chiappone of Orrington, and Denise and Steve Savageau of Palmyra; 2 brothers, Berk Graves and Dale Graves, Sr., both of Etna; a sister Rebecca Towle of Etna; 5 much adored grandchildren, Dylan and Amber Savageau, Morgan Tasker, Anthony and Christopher Chiappone; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; his ex-wife of Etna; and special friends, Raymond Walker, Ronald Carter, and Warren Shaw. He was predeceased by his father; 2 brothers, Bob and Raymond Graves; and a sister Donna Graves.
Funeral services were held at 6 PM on Monday, March 28th at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. Friends called from 5 PM until the time of the service. Spring burial will be in the Pleasant Hill cemetery, Etna. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Arthur Graves Scholarship Fund to create an environmental conservation scholarship, in care of Peoples United Bank, 44 Moosehead Trail, P.O. Robert L. Beauchesne

ST. ALBANS - Robert L. Beauchesne, 74, died March 19th, 2011, after a three year battle with cancer, at a Bangor hospital.
He was born in Lewiston, ME, on June 14th, 1936, the son of Thomas and Armosa (Letourneau) Beauchesne and moved to Connecticut when he was six years old. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was employed for 34 years at Southern New England Telephone Company in Connecticut.
Bob loved the ocean and enjoyed sitting in the sun. He liked camping, boating, fishing, hunting and snowmobiling. He also loved to dancehe was a dancing machine! The last few years he really enjoyed being at the lake and helping to build a new home. Most of all, Bob enjoyed being surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Some of his last thoughts were that he felt sad at not being able to see his grandchildren graduate, get married and have families of their own. He was always thankful for the special times that he did share with them.
He is survived by his loving wife of 14 years, Donna (Robertson-Provencher) Beauchesne, of St. Albans; 3 children and 5 stepchildren, Robert Beauchesne and his wife, Mary, of Sterling, Connecticut, Chris Beauchesne and his wife, Debbie, of Mt. View, California, Chance Beauchesne of San Francisco, California, Cheryl Brewster and her husband, Gary, of Manchester, NH, Mike Provencher and his wife, Melisa, of St. Albans, Darlene Palmer and her husband, Jim, of Gardiner, Eric Provencher and his wife, Marcia, of St. Albans, Thomas Provencher and his partner, Kristen, of St. Albans; 15 grandchildren, Linda, Justin, Sarah, Zach, Tyler, Sarah, Jessica, Timothy, Tyler, Mikayla, Audrey, Brett, Ryan, Matt and little Sammie; one niece; and a very good friend, Joe.
He is predeceased by his parents, his first wife of 37 years, Cynthia and his sister, Diane.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 PM on Friday, April 1st, 2011, at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield. A celebration of Robert’s life was held at 1 PM, Saturday, April 2nd, 2011, at the St. Albans Union Church, 15 Main Street, St. Albans, with the Rev. Leonard Reiss officiating. A gathering followed in the church fellowship hall.

Charlie “Chuck” Bussell II

HARMONY - Charlie G. Bussell, II, 38, was called home to be with the Lord in Peace on Saturday, March 26, 2011. Charlie was born August 10, 1972, a son of Lyndon and Maureen (Grenier) Bussell.
Chuck was a loyal and devoted father, son, brother, family man and a true friend to the end. He was a woodsman by trade. He believed in doing an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay and he took pride in doing so. He enjoyed the outdoors; hunting ducks and geese with his dogs, turkeys with his nephew Briar, and deer with family and friends. He also enjoyed dipping smelts, arm wrestling, grappling, shooting, and good music. Chuck took pride in his family and close friends. He would help anyone he could and say thank you to anyone who gave him a “leg up” when he needed one.
He is survived by his father of Harmony; grandmother Leah Bussell of Wellington; 2 children, “his boy” Andrew and wife Brittany Paradis of Wellington, and a step daughter, Michelle and husband Tim Coghlan of Lynn, MA; 5 siblings, a sister, Stacy and husband Mitchell Bedi of Newport, 4 brothers, Kendall and wife Tammy Judd, Cory and wife Jean Bussell, all of Athens, Eric and wife Tammy [sic.] Bussell of Mercer, Robert and wife Mary Bussell of Harmony; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He also leaves behind his dog Bosco.
Chuck was predeceased by his mother on February 5th, 2005. He will be missed but memories of him live in all who knew and loved him. “Never forgotten.”
Friends called from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM Friday, April 1st, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. A spring graveside funeral and committal service will be held at a time and location to be announced.
