David Burhoe

1937-2003

AUGUSTA — David Burhoe, 65, a resident of Hall Dale Manor Boarding Home, Farmingdale, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at MaineGeneral Hospital in Augusta.

He was born June 28, 1937, in Jay, a son of Florin and Methyl (Wilkins) Burhoe.

He received his education in Fayette Schools. He had been employed at local shoe manufacturing companies and also for motivational services through Goodwill.

David enjoyed fishing, singing and spending time with his family.

He is survived by one brother, Herbert Burhoe of Fayette; seven sisters, Jean Burhoe of Medford, Ore., Gay Reeve of Fayette, Mary Broad of Readfield, Percis Crimmel of Fayette, Doris Black of Livermore Falls, Norma Satori of Bangor and Eldora Pike of New Zealand and Maine; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; his stepdad, Arthur Brown; a sister, Barbara Whittemore; and a brother, Arthur Burhoe.

Public memorial graveside servces will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 26, at Birchland Cemetery, Route 17, North Jay, with Don LeSuer officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, 1 Bangor St., Augusta 04330. Cremation services are in the care of Wiles Funeral Home, Cremation Service and Bereavement Center, 308 Franklin Road (Route 133), Jay.

Olivine E. Rouleau

1904-2003

AUGUSTA — Olivine E. Rouleau, 99, of Northern Avenue, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Campus, after a brief illness.

She was born in Sawyerville, Quebec, on March 20, 1904, the daughter of Felix Dumont and Mary (Golin) Dumont. Besides raising a family of five children, Mrs. Rouleau was employed by the Augusta State Hospital for more than 10 years. She was previously employed by Bates Manufacturing Co., Edwards Division, for many years.

Mrs. Rouleau was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church. She also was a member of Cushnoc Senior Citizens; L'Union St.-Jean Baptiste; the Ladies of St. Anne Society, where she served as vice president for many years; and the Charismatic Prayer Community at St. Paul Center, where she volunteered for 27 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Adelbert Rouleau, on May 29, 1980, as well as her parents, five brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are two sons, Gerard J. Rouleau and his wife Yvette and Robert J. Rouleau and his wife Anita, all of Augusta; three daughters, Sister Therese Rouleau, F.C.S.C.J., of Attleboro, Mass., Arlene Bilodeau and her husband Victor of Monmouth and Jeannette Beaulieu and her husband Raymond of Augusta; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where members of the Ladies of St. Anne Society are asked to meet at 3 p.m. to recite prayers for their departed member. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Spring burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Augusta.

Donations may be made to either St. Augustine Church Restoration Fund, 5 Kendall St., Augusta 04330 or the charity of one's choice. Condolences to the family may be sent via the funeral home Web site at www.plummerfh.com.

Carolyn C. and Carl Watts

2003

RICHMOND — Carolyn C. Watts, 82, of Richmond and St. Petersburg, Fla., died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Hospice Home Woodside, Pinellas Park, Fla. She was born and raised in Richmond. She attended Richmond schools and graduated in 1939. Carolyn was the second-oldest child of Glenwood Warren Curtis and Mary Black-Curtis. Her father was killed in a logging accident in January 1939.

Carolyn married Carl Horace Watts of Richmond on June 8, 1944. She was anemployee of Eaton Shoe for 20 years and retired from her position as an inspector for the company in 1976. Her marriage to Carl celebrated its 50th year in 1994.

Besides her daughters, Carol Ann and Patricia, she is survived by two brothers, Norman Curtis of Richmond and Fulton Curtis of Warren; six sisters, Myrna Waltz, Gertrude White and Glenna Bodge, all of Richmond, Jean Powers of Embden Pond, Barbara Crosby of Randolph and Roxanna Stevens of Machias.

PICTURE HERE Carl H. Watts, 85, of Richmond and St. Petersburg, Fla., died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at St. Anthony's Hospital after a short illness in Florida. He was born on Swans Island in Maine.

Following the death of his mother, Emma Watts, Carl moved to Jonesboro with his father, Morton H. Watts, where other Watts family members lived. Upon his father's remarriage to Ada Reeds Watts, Carl moved to Richmond at the age of 10. His only brother, Wilson H. Watts, was tragically killed in an accident at the age of 23.

Upon graduating from Richmond High School, Carl held various jobs until joining the Army Air Corps. He was discharged at the end of World War II after serving in Central America. In 1944, he married Carolyn Florence Curtis of Richmond.

Carl worked 40 years for the Department of Agriculture. He started out as a potato inspector in Aroostook County and retired as the director for the Division of Marketing with the state of Maine. For many years, he and Carolyn resided at his childhood home at 8 Chestnut St. in Richmond.

He had served the town of Richmond as a selectman and took a real interest in the development of the community. Upon retirement, he drove and headed up the Richmond School Department's bus garage.

Carl and Carolyn began spending winter months in St. Petersburg, Fla. Every summer the Watts would return to Richmond to stay with family and visit their many old friends.

Carl was a lifetime member of Post 132 of the American Legion in Richmond, where he served in many positions, including commander. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a Mason and a 32nd Degree member of the Kora Shrine in Lewiston. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed the game of golf.

Carl and Carolyn leave two daughters, Carol Ann Uhle of Emmaus, Pa., and Patricia Watts of Richmond, and their two sons-in-law, Richard F. Uhle and Robert G. Fairburn; and two grand-daughters, Maria Uhle of Knoxville, Tenn., and Jennifer Uhle of Germantown, Md. They also leave many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services for Carl and Carolyn will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 11, at Kincer Funeral Home in Richmond. Directly following the ceremonies, a luncheon will be served at the American Legion Hall, Post 132, in Richmond.

There will be a joint interment at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta at 11 a.m. Monday, April 14. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Hospice, The Richmond Alumni Association, or any charity of one's choice.

The family would also like to personally thank all who sent cards and notes. They were a great comfort during their time of grief. God bless you, Mom and Dad, we will miss you!

Stephen D. Estes

1948-2003

RICHMOND — Stephen D. Estes, 55, passed away Friday, May 30, at Mid Coast Senior Living in Brunswick.

He was born in Holyoke, Mass., on Feb. 9, 1948, the son of Everett and Ruth (Woodbury) Estes.

Stephen served his country in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He was also a member of Richmond American Legion Post 132 and served on the honor guard.

He enjoyed fishing and sightseeing.

Stephen was a 15-year employee of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, where he was the resident locksmith.

Stephen was predeceased by his parents, son J.D. Estes and grandson D.J. Estes. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Estes of Richmond; brother Everett Estes of Massachusetts; and two nieces, two nephews and several cousins.

A graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 5, at the new Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road in Augusta, with full military honors being performed by the Kennebec County Honor Guard. Following the service, a gathering will take place at the Richmond American Legion on the Carding Machine Road.

Sylvia Gioia

1909-2003

AUGUSTA — Sylvia Gioia, 93, of Gray Birch Drive and formally of Hopkins Road, Williamsville, N.Y., died Friday, May 30, 2003, at MaineGeneral Rehabilation and Nursing Care at Gray Birch after a long illness.

She was born on Aug. 20, 1909, in Buffalo, N.Y., the daughter of Joseph and Salvatrice Tubolino Ciresi. She attended Buffalo schools and was a member of St. Gregory the Great Roman Catholic Church, Williamsville, N.Y., until moving to Maine.

She is predeceased by her husband, Salvatore Gioia, and a son, Thomas Gioia.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Carol (Saltarelli) Gioia; her grandchildren, Samuel and wife Shelia Gioia, Thomas and wife Diane Gioia, Paul and wife Angela Gioia, John and wife Fay Gioia, and James and wife Donna Gioia; and 14 great-grandchildren.

There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Gardiner. Burial will be at 2:45 p.m. Thursday at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cheektowaga, N.Y. Arrangements are in care of Amesbury, White & Harmon Funeral Home, 39 Washington Ave., Gardiner. Those unable to attend may express condolences at www.awharmonfuneralhome.com.

Maurice W. Howard

1926-2003

YARMOUTH — Maurice W. Howard, 76, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at his home on Cousins Island following a long illness.

He was born in Palermo on Aug. 27, 1926, the son of Forrest and Melvina Fowlie Howard.

He attended schools in Palermo and received his high school diploma from American School of Chicago.

Mr. Howard served with the 135th Infantry, 3rd Battalion during World War II.

He was employed for 38 years by Central Maine Power Co., earned his first-class engineer's license and was shift supervisor at the W.F. Wyman Plant in Yarmouth. In 1980, he went into partnership with his son and opened Toyland in Yarmouth, which they operated for 22 years.

He served 17 years as a volunteer fireman for the town of Yarmouth. He was a family man who was ever so proud of his children.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marilyn Griffeth Howard of Yarmouth; a daughter, Melody Howard Ireland of South Portland; a son, Mitchell C. Howard of Yarmouth; a brother, Millard A. Howard of Palermo; three grandchildren, Ensign Vincent O. Ireland III of Silverdale, Wash., and Christian F. and Charles E. Ireland, both of South Portland; and one great-granddaughter, Kathie Ireland of Washington.

It was the request of Mr. Howard that there be no funeral service. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Yarmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the guidance of Independent Death Care of Maine.

M. Rita O'Donnell

1914-2003

AUGUSTA — M. Rita O'Donnell, 88, of Howell House on Sewall Street, died Monday, June 2, 2003 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Grey Birch Drive after a brief illness.

She was born in Taunton, Mass. on June 15, 1914, the daughter of John E. and Catherine B. (Gregg) O'Donnell.

Ms. O'Donnell had been employed by the Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant for more than 20 years as senior clerk in the billing department.

She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church of Augusta, a member of the Annunciation of the Lord of Taunton, St. Mary's Guild, Queen's Daughters, Annunciation of the Lord's Women's Guild and a recipient of the Marian Award of the Diocese of Fall River, Mass.

Survivors include a sister, Rose G. O'Donnell of Augusta; a sister-in-law, Ann C. O'Donnell of Augusta; a niece, Katherine O. Greenleaf of Norway; four nephews, John E. O'Donnell of Wichita, Kansas, James P. O'Donnell of Seattle, Wash., and Joseph M. O'Donnell and Stephen J. O'Donnell, both of Augusta; and several great-grand- and grandnieces and nephews. At the family's request, there will be no hours of visitation here in Augusta; however, there will be brief visitation at the O'Keefe-Wade Funeral Home in Taunton, Mass. prior to the Mass of Christian burial.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church of Augusta.

Arrangements are by Plummer Funeral Home 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.

Final arrangements will be handled by the O'Keefe-Wade Funeral Home, 70 Washington Street, Taunton, Mass. 02780.
