Melvin Henry Richards

NAPLES, FL - Melvin Henry Richards, 44, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at his home in Naples. He was born January 14, 1967 in Presque Isle. A long time resident of Naples, Florida he was owner and operator of Mel’s Towing, and then Jerry’s Towing of Naples for many years.
Melvin was predeceased by his mother and father Alberta and Laurence Richards, his “Dad - Beely” (Walter Richards) and brother Gary Richards.
He is survived by sons Jamison of Naples, FL and Harrison & Anastasia of North Carolina, siblings Anita & Chet Morse, Sylvia & David King of St. Albans, Brenda & Craig White of Kenduskeag, special “sister” cousin Candy & Scotty Nevers of Merrill, Dale & Jeanine of Parkman, and Milo and Daniel of Canaan; Nieces and Nephews Gregory, Nicole, Logan and Brody Morse; Danielle, Jacob, Oliver, Austin and Emmett Cray; Jason, Jason Jr. and Lindsey Morse; Loretta, Ray, Felicia and Devan Haas; Christopher Richards, Jacob and Alexandra King, Daleine Richards, Jonathon Knuckles & family; Mark Ramsdell & family; Judy Huff & family.
He was expecting and looking forward to meeting his first grandson in September. Melvin lived life to the fullest. He loved his boys, his family in Maine and his Alvarado family in Florida, no-bake chocolate cookies, as well as his friends old and new. He would willingly give up what he had to help out anyone in need, especially a child. He was “Uncle Mel” to countless children who knew they would get a smile, a story and a lot of fun when Uncle Mel was around.
In a life way too short, he enriched the lives of everyone who met and loved him. He was full of fun and laughter and would put smiles on the faces of everyone who came in contact with him. He met you with a handshake and left you with a smile. Mel will be loved, missed, and remembered forever in our hearts.
A burial service will be held on Saturday, June 18th at 2:00 p.m. for his family and friends, officiated by the Rev. Donald Morton, Jr. at the Richards family lot in the Oakfield cemetery. After the service all are invited to reminisce at Candy’s Home in Merrill.

Manuel C. Fernandes

CORINNA - Manny Fernandes, 81, died May 25, 2011 at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born March 1, 1930 in New Bedford, MA and graduated from Campbell Junior College. He also attended the University of Maryland, Northeastern University and the University of Maine. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Manny retired as a financial analyst with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, retiring in March 1994. He was a former member of Brighton [MA] Evangelical Congregational Church, where he served as youth leader, adult Bible study leader, and chair of the Council on Ministries and the Administrative Board.
In May of 1994 he married the former Olivia Reeves and together they moved to Olivia’s hometown of Corinna. He was an active member of the Corinna United Methodist Church. After completing lay pastor training, he worked in area nursing homes and at the Maine State Prison. He was a member of Tres Dias and will also be remembered as the director of Corinna’s first homecoming parade.
In addition to his wife of Corinna, he is survived by a brother, Alexis Fernandes of Seattle, WA; a niece Sonia Fernandes and nephew Joseph Fernandes; 2 great nephews, Joseph Anthony Fernandes II and Justin Fernandes; and his cat Penelope. He will be fondly remembered by dear friends, the Rev. John Eller, Grace Pearl Griffin and Bernice Griffin. He was predeceased by his mother Cedelia Fernandes; a sister, Connie, and a brother, Norbert Nunes.
Funeral services were held at 2 PM on Sunday, May 29th at the Corinna United Methodist Church, 16 Dexter Road, Corinna, with Pastor Angela Tarbox officiating. Friends may call from 1 PM until the time of the service. Burial will be in Lakeview cemetery, Wilton. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Chapel, Corinna. Elaine (Gustin) Davis

CORINNA & PITTSFIELD - Elaine Jean (Gustin) Davis, 53, died unexpectedly May 28, 2011. She was born July 15, 1957 in Dexter at Plummer Memorial Hospital to the proud parents of Gerald and Emma Jean (Saunders) Gustin.
Elaine’s favorite time of year was Christmas. She had been quoted saying “My parents made it a special time of year for us kids.”
On September 2, 1986 she opened her first boutique called “Christmas Worldwide” on Route 2, Pittsfield. Years later on October 1990 she opened a Christmas store in Corinna. She was a very successful business supervisor of a nationwide franchise of House of Lloyd and also Christmas around the World. With her great sales and leadership she earned paid vacations to Greece, Spain, Hawaii and Rio deJeinro. Two trips greatly enjoyed were to Greece with her father, Gerald Gustin and trip to Spain with her son, Jason Cunningham.
Elaine’s greatest joys in life were her three children and grandchildren. She enjoyed getting together with family and friends sharing memories and making them laugh. Elaine loved to go to church and share with others what God had done for her and her family.
Elaine enjoyed shopping and buying gifts for other people. She was a very generous person. If someone was in need Elaine was quick to step up and help in any way she could.
Elaine is survived by her mother of Corinna; son Jason Cunningham of Palmyra, grandchildren, Hannah Cunningham and Grace Cunningham; her daughter Emmalee Reed and husband Joshua of Corinna, and granddaughter Maria. She also leaves behind her sisters Blakena Scott and husband Jeff of St. Albans, Holly Mullis and husband George of Corinna; her brothers Delmont Benjamin and wife Sue of New York, Patrick Gustin and wife Laurie of Corinna, Kirk Gustin and wife Cassie of St Albans and John Gustin of Corinna. Elaine is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
She is reunited with her beloved son, Donnie Lovley and father Gerald Gustin.
She will be greatly missed by many. Her smiling face and laughter will live in our hearts forever. A special thank you to cousin, Sheryl Gustin for all the help over the years and neighbor Colleen McHugh.
Visiting hours were held from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday, June 2nd, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. Funeral Services were held at 1 PM on Friday, June 3rd, at Deeper Life Assembly Church, 97 Higgins Road, Pittsfield. Burial followed at Higgins cemetery, Bowden Road, Corinna. A celebration of Elaine’s life will be held at Deeper Life Assembly Church after committal.

Shirley Lawler McPherson

PITTSFIELD - Shirley Lawler McPherson, 88, died peacefully on Sunday, May 1, at her granddaughter’s home in Pittsfield. She was born on January 30, 1923, in Jackson, Maine, to the late Henry and Annie (Goodnow) Lawler, Sr.
Shirley spent her early childhood in Jackson and Camden. After moving to Pittsfield at the age of 8, she attended Pittsfield schools and later graduated from Maine Central Institute, as the Valedictorian of her class, in 1941. She then attended Beal Business College, graduating in 1943.
She served our country in the United States Navy Reserve, Women’s Reserve for over two years, from 1944-1946. Shortly after discharge, Shirley met and married Sherman McPherson in 1947. Together they built a life in Pittsfield, where they raised two children, Randall “Randy” McPherson and Sheralyn “Sherry” McPherson Holbrook. Along with raising their children and caring for her mother, Shirley worked in office administration at Pittsfield Industries for 8 years and later went on to work at Pittsfield Coal & Oil Company until her retirement in 1985.
She was an avid reader and there wasn’t a crossword puzzle that she couldn’t solve with ease. Shirley was a very talented meticulous individual, she learned the art of rug braiding, which become a favorite past time. She crafted many rugs over the years that have been enjoyed by her family in her home and in theirs. She enjoyed teaching and playing many card games with her family and friends over the years, especially cribbage. Shirley loved the outdoors. She walked daily and loved taking her granddaughters in search of wild flowers and always knew right where to find a “Lady Slipper”. In most recent years she enjoyed the company of her great grandson, Randy, playing checkers and going for walks in Mason Park.
She is survived by her daughter, Sherry Holbrook of Blue Hill; her daughter-in-law, Ginger McPherson Russell; her three granddaughters, Amy McPherson and her husband, Michael Starbird, of Pittsfield, Terin Holbrook Zebarth and her husband, Tasso, of Austin, Texas and Jennie Holbrook and her companion, Glenn Mirlocca, of New Portland; her great grandson, Randall “Randy” Starbird; three half brothers, Rexford Knowles and Phillip Knowles, both of Unity Plantation and Henry Lawler, Jr. of Bangor; a half-sister, Mary Ellen Bowden of Orrington; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years Sherman McPherson in 1997; her son, Randall “Randy” McPherson in 1997; a brother, Norman Lawler Sr.; and a sister, Hazel Lawler DuDevoir.
A graveside service will be held in the month of June at the Village cemetery in Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Shirley’s memory to the Paul E. Bertrand Public Pool or the Pittsfield Public Library, c/o the Town of Pittsfield, 112 Somerset Avenue, Pittsfield, Maine, 04967.
Care for the family has been provided by Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, Pittsfield.

Sherman L. Harris

CORINNA - Sherman Lee Harris, 82, died July 11, 2013 at a Bangor hospital. He was born January 21, 1931 in Bridgewater, a son of John and Georgia (Nelson) Harris. Sherm served 4 years in the National Guard at the Newport Armory, and also served 4 years with the U. S. Marine Corps. He was a truck driver for most of his life, retiring from Dexter Shoe Company in 1990 due to ill health. He loved camping, four-wheeling, hunting, fishing and car auctions. He attended the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Exeter and had many friends there.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Sandra (Robbins) Harris of Corinna; a step son and wife Donald and Melody Wyman of San Antonio, TX; a sister and husband Rowena and Lewis McLeod of St. Albans; a sister in law Geraldine Harris of Palmyra; 3 grandsons; 8 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and his dog Jazz.
Sherm was predeceased by a brother Ray, and sisters, Edna and Donna.
Graveside committal services were held at 11 AM on Friday, July 19th, at Morses Corner cemetery, Corinna, with the Rev. Stan Griffin and Mark Arnold officiating. Gary Dorman sang “ The Old Rugged Cross.” Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna. Those who wish may leave written condolences at www.CrosbyNeal.com

Katherine Ruth (O’Reilly) Buzzell

NEWPORT - Katherine Ruth (O’Reilly) Buzzell, 84, passed away peacefully at her home in Newport, on Friday, July 12, 2013. She was born in Hartland, on May 12, 1929, the tenth of nineteen children, to Myles and Gertrude Walker O’Reilly. She was one of the most loving and caring people on this earth and was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. She especially loved children and in her younger years cared for many in her home.
Kay was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Calvin Buzzell, in 1998, as well as her parents and many of her siblings. She is survived by her daughter Charlene Lowe of Westbrook, grandsons Jeffrey Cohen and his wife Paula of Waterboro, and Ryan Lowe of Portland; four great-grandchildren, Jason Cohen stationed with the US Army in Afghanistan, Jacob and Paige Cohen of Waterboro, and Ashlyn Lowe of Portland; and one great-great-granddaughter, Eisly Cohen of Waterboro.
Surviving in-laws include Earl and Betty O’Farrell of Newport, Everett and May Purvis of Veazie, David Cook of Pittsfield, Harlan and Rita Braley and Ellen Lessor all of Newport. Surviving siblings are Janette Childs of Gardner, Agnes in MA, Mary Malia of Dover and Ray Jean Buzzell of Guilford. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
There will be a graveside service at the Pittsfield cemetery at a date yet to be determined.

Carole (Lafountain) Shelton

DEXTER - Carole A. Shelton, 54, died July 2, 2013 at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. She was born February 16, 1959 in Dexter, a daughter of Edward and Geneva (Nadeau) Lafountain. Carole graduated from Dexter Regional High School, Class of 1977. She worked in California as a cook at several restaurants for nearly 20 years, before returning to Dexter 14 years ago. She was a member of the Humane Society.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by a loving partner, Lloyd Burnham, Sr. of Dexter; a step-daughter, Jenna and husband Nick Lucchesi of California; 2 sisters, Mary and husband Karl Jordan of Ontario, and Maureen and husband Brad Greeley of NH; her best friend, Sunny (Austin) Robbins of Dexter; several nieces and nephews; and her extended family. She was predeceased by her father Freddie, and brother Alan.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 AM on Wednesday, July 10th at St. Anne’s Church, Dexter, with the Rev. Fr. Paul Murray officiating. Burial is in Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Dexter. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Dexter. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bangor Humane Society, 693B Mt. Hope Avenue, Bangor, ME 04401. Skylar Madison Schaefer-Dunton

NEWPORT - Skylar Schaefer-Dunton, infant daughter of Eric M. Dunton and Mallorie J. Schaefer, died July 4, 2013 at her Newport residence. She was born June 4, 2013 in Bangor.
Who knew someone so little could create a love so vast, from the very moment we saw you we knew we would be in love forever. You created a bond between the people who got to hold you, never met you, who prayed for you and were affected by your heart and soul. We will forever miss you.
In addition to her parents of Newport, she is survived by her brother Jayden Schaefer, also of Newport; paternal grandparents, Donald and Roberta Dunton of Belfast; MeGramma- Lisa Nickerson of Rockland; PooPa- Steven Nickerson and Auntie Tayler of Belfast; and maternal grandfather Tom Schaefer of Orrington. She was predeceased by her paternal grandmother Gayle.

Donna M. Pelkie

Augusta - Donna M. Pelkie, 67, passed away on July 10, 2013, at the Veteran’s Hospital in Togus.
Donna was born on September 23, 1945, in Hartland, Maine, the daughter of the late Donald and Glenice (Perkins) Pelkie. She grew up in Hartland and graduated from Hartland Academy with the class of 1963. She worked as a volunteer at the Scott Webb Memorial Hospital as a candy striper before going on to nursing school in Lewiston where she received her R.N. She also attended Boston University and received her bachelor’s degree. She came back to Maine and worked as a social worker for the State of Maine being employed at the 1125 Reserve Center in Auburn.
Donna joined the U.S. Army full time and was stationed at bases not only in Maine, but throughout the United States, Germany and finally returning to Fort Devens, Massachusetts. She retired as a Major from the U.S. Army after serving over 13 years.
Donna leaves behind her two sisters, Gloria Pelkie and Jacqueline Brooks and husband, Foster, of Hartland; niece, Dawn Butler and husband Randy; nephews, Rev. Kevin Brooks and wife, Tammi, Richard Brooks and wife, Kim, and Lt. Col. Mark Brooks and wife Sarah; grand nieces and nephews, Nathaniel, Alethea and husband Stephen, Thaddeus, Benjamin, Kyle, Jacob, Julia and Hope; many wonderful friends; and one special friend, Rita Violet.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Dawn and her husband Randy for the wonderful care and compassion that they gave to Donna during her illness.
She was predeceased by her parents, Donald and Glenice Pelkie; and a brother, Richard Pelkie.
A graveside service will be held at 2 PM, Monday, July 15th, at the Pine Grove cemetery, Route 152, in Hartland with the Rev. Kevin Brooks officiating.
Care has been provided by Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, Pittsfield.

Danny Ray Donnell

Aurora, CO - Danny Ray Donnell died June 27 of a heart attack. He was born in Dexter, ME on December 10, 1962 to Iona and Ray Donnell. He graduated from MCI in Pittsfield, ME in 1981. He was very close with all his classmates throughout the years. Dan served in the Air Force for 6 years. He loved riding motorcycles and taking road trips. It was on a cross country road trip that he went through Colorado that he fell in love with the state and knew that was where he wanted to spend the rest of his life. He started a painting company where he was very well respected and sought out for his excellence to detail. He loved being outdoors and with his family. Family was very important to him. He had a special gift with people. He truely cared for all he came in contact with.
He is survived by his son Dakota Ray, Dan’s wife Katie and her two boys Austin and Chase, a sister Maria Farmer of Detroit, ME, a brother “Jack” Scott Donnell of Pittsfield, ME, 7 cousins, 2 aunts, stepmother Joyce Donnell of Bucksport, ME, 4 nephews, 1 niece, 2 great nephews and 1 great niece.
