Phillip (Frank) Bottenfield

Palmyra - Phillip (Frank) Bottenfield, August 24, 1926 - June 5, 2013 of Palmyra, ME and Hollidaysburg, PA, passed away Wednesday, June 25th, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Bangor, ME.
He was born August 24, 1926 in Lakemont, PA, son of Joseph and Sarah (McTigue) Bottenfield.
He was married to Ruth Violet and had two sons, Phillip Donald and Michael Joseph of Hollidaysburg, PA. He was married to Helen Marie and had three daughters, Susan Marie Bottenfield of Altoona, PA, Sarah Ann Eberlin of Altoona, PA and Evelyn Marie Weston of Elizabethtown, PA.
In 1995 he married Shirley Ann Rogers of Exeter, ME at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hollidaysburg, PA, who survives him. He is also survived by eight grandchildren - Jason Bottenfield and wife Grace of Pittsfield, ME, Matt Weston of New York, Jacob Eberlin of Roaring Spring, PA, Lisa and Cheri Bottenfield of Hollidaysburg, PA, Brittney and husband Paul McCulloch of Altoona, PA, Theresa Weston of Elizabethtown, PA, Gabrielle and Madison Eberlin of Roaring Spring, PA and a very “special” great-grandson Maxwell Franklin Bottenfield of Pittsfield, ME, a ‘special” brother Cliff of California, a “special” sister Mary C. Lego of Altoona, PA.
He was preceded in death by a “special” grandson Pip Bottenfield who was tragically killed April 27, 2012 at the age of 33 in PA.
He is survived by step-son Michael P. Rogers and wife Natalie of Exeter, ME, two step-grandchildren Alyssa M. Rogers and Jared T. Rogers of Exeter, ME.
Phillip was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII.
He retired as co-owner of Tel-Power, Inc. in 2004. He is survived by his business partner Bill Bottenfield of Hollidaysburg, PA after 60 years in business together. He also leaves many friends in ME and PA.

Christie M. Mackenzie

PLYMOUTH - Christie M. MacKenzie, 82, died July 4, 2013 at her residence. She was born May 13, 1931 in Plymouth, a daughter of Roland and Electa (Gray) Hines. Christie was a devout Christian and read her Bible every day. She was a member of Emmanuel Bible Baptist Church and the Plymouth Grange. She served as 2nd Selectperson for the Town of Plymouth until 2012. She drove a school bus for SAD #48 for over 20 years, and served as a rural mail carrier in Etna after her bus route was completed. She will be fondly remembered for her cooking, sewing, and hunting.
She is survived by 3 sons and their wives, Gerald “Butch” and Laurie MacKenzie of Old Orchard Beach, George “Buck” and Betty MacKenzie of Newport, and Scott and Allison MacKenzie of Plymouth; 5 daughters, Linda and husband Mike Seavey of Plymouth, Brenda and husband Philip Ripton, Lorraine Hawthorne, Kris MacKenzie and companion Todd Braley, all of Newport, and Sharon and husband Tom McDonald of Bangor; 24 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; a special cousin, Algina Perry of Alfred; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Gerald, son James, grandson Ryan, sister Marion Whalen, and son in law Aaron Hawthorne.
Friends called from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Monday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. Funeral services were held 11 AM Tuesday, July 9th, at the Emmanuel Bible Baptist Church, Plymouth, with her grandson, Pastor Matthew McDonald officiating. Burial will be in the Sawyer cemetery, Plymouth, at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the church building fund, P.O. Box 62, Plymouth, ME 04969. Philip Roy Whitman

Lincolnville - Philip Roy Whitman went to be with the Lord, Saturday, June 22, 2013. He was born April 21, 1941 in Pittsfield at a private home with his grandmother Brown as the attending nurse. Philip was the son of the late Ellis Charles Whitman of Palmyra and the late Katherine Barker Brown Whitman of Athens.
When Phil was just a baby, his father Ellis went into WW II and Phil was raised by grand parents Ivan and Verna Whitman. Philip had fond memories of farm life with horses, cows, and enjoyed driving the early tractors and other farm equipment in Palmyra. He attended grammar school there and in Pittsfield and High School in Hartland Academy and MCI in Pittsfield.
He liked going fishing and boating on Sebasticook Lake in Newport at his grandfather’s camp. As a teenager in the 50’, he enjoyed driving his favorite car, a 1956 Ford convertible. As an adult he loved nature, feeding the birds, watching the squirrels and all other kinds of wild life.
Philip’s career began at Banton Bros. woodworking mill in Newport. Later he was employed by NE Shoe in Pittsfield; then made a career at Eastland Woolen Mill for 30 years until 1995 when the mill closed. After the woolen mill closed he did some carpentry work and then caretaking at the Simonton’s in Camden.
In 1992 Phil moved from the Corinna area to Lincolnville when he met his present wife Virginia. He cut his own fire wood for heating the house and split it all by hand saying it was good exercise for him. He and his wife Ginny enjoyed all life had to offer. They enjoyed everything from dancing, cruising, attending concerts, taking a Sunday drive, visiting with friends and family, to traveling the world and swimming with the dolphins. Phil had the gift to gab and enjoy great conversations with everyone he met from great friends to strangers.
The Whitman family would like to express their appreciation to Chief Ron Young of the Lincolnville Police Dept. and to Camden First Aid Association for their quick response; and to the staff Maine Medical Center.
Phil is survived by his wife Virginia of Lincolnville; two sisters, Prudy Aprea & her husband, Joe of Nashua, NH; Barbara Fraser of Lehigh Acres, FL; one brother, Richard Whitman & his wife, Kathy of Methuen, MA; 5 children, Chris Whitman of Stockton Springs; Wanda Roy and her husband, David of Levant; Terry Kennedy & her husband, Alan of Bangor; Sherry Whitney & her husband, Roger of Corinna; and Thyra Whitman of Bangor; 2 step children, Ricky Jackson of Ellsworth; Sandra Mitchell and her husband, Daniel of Brooksville; 4 grandchildren, Heather Huntley & her husband, Scott; Michael Brooks and his wife, Jenny; Lindsay Roy, Jillian Roy; 2 step-grandchildren Melisa & Tiffany Mitchell; 2 great grandchildren Chloe & Christopher; 1 step great-grandchild Emma; and a brother-in-law, Lenny Nichols of Skowhegan. Phil was predeceased by a sister, Donna Nichols her husband Lenny lives in Skowhegan. He is pre deceased by his sister Donna Nichols her husband Lenny lives in Skowhegan.
A memorial service was held at the United Christian Church in Lincolnville Center Maine on Saturday, June 29th, 2013 at 10 AM with the Rev. Dr. Susan Stonestreet officiating. Burial followed at the Mountain View cemetery in Camden. A reception was held following the burial at 672 Beach Road in Lincolnville. Memorial donations may be made to the Lincolnville Historical Association, P.O. Box 204, Lincolnville, ME 04849. Joseph E. Layfield

DEXTER - Joseph Edward Layfield, 65, passed away June 18, 2013 at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital due to complications from his exposure to Agent Orange. He was born February 27, 1948 in Philadelphia, PA, a son of John and Anna (Scollon) Layfield. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served with the 25th Infantry Division, stationed in CuCHi. He served honorably and received 2 bronze stars with Oak Leaf Clusters for his brave service to his country, and was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in battle. He also served as a member of the Philadelphia National Guard for an additional 10 years. He was a member of Poulliot-Sevey Post American Legion in Dexter. Joseph was a 100 per cent service connected disabled veteran and was always proud of his contribution and sacrifice to his country. He worked for the American Can Company in Philadelphia for 19 years until the plant closed, and then chauffeured limousines until he was forced to retire due to a severe car accident that left him permanently disabled. He moved to Dexter with his family in 2003 to live out the remainder of his days in peace and quiet.
Joseph is survived by his wife of 44 years, Lorraine (Edwards) Layfield; his daughter Lisa Layfield; grandson Joseph Layfield; and sister Joy Layfield, all of Dexter. He was one of 7 children, including the late John Layfield, his surviving brother Jerome Layfield, the late James Layfield, his surviving brother Jay Layfield, the late Jeffrey Layfield, and their spouses, Kathy, Sandy, Debra, and Pat; 17 nieces and nephews; 20 great nieces and nephews; numerous cousins, aunts, uncles and dear family friends.
There will be no services. The family asks that no flowers or mass cards be sent. They ask instead that donations be made in his memory to the Disabled American Veterans National Foundation, 1020 19th Street, NW, Suite 475, Washington, DC 20036; or at www.dvnf.org/donate/donate-in-memory-or-in-honor.

Byron Henderson, Jr.

CORINNA - Byron Henderson Jr., 85, died June 18, 2013 at a Bangor hospital. He was born April 10, 1928 in Corinna, a son of Byron and Josephine (West) Henderson, Sr. Byron, nicknamed “Tarzan”, attended schools in Pittsfield and Carmel and also at Corinna Union Academy. He worked on his father’s farm and at Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna before enlisting in the Army. There he served during World War II stationed at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds training in weapons and ordinance, and at Fort Jackson, SC, and Fort Bragg, NC in the 142nd Heavy Maintenance Ordinance Division, 7th Army. After the war he drove oil and gas trucks for Clyde Smith in Exeter. He was known as a logger and general contractor, starting his own business in 1950 as Byron Henderson, Jr. Construction Company. He was an excellent crane and backhoe operator. He did excavation work, including 10 senior citizens homes in Greenville, Monson, Guilford, Sangerville, Dexter, Vassalboro and Farmingdale. He was a life member of Pacific Lodge # 64 Masons of Exeter, joining in 1951 and currently serving as the Tyler. He served on the Corinna Planning Board and was Chairman from 1977 to 1990. He also served on the Corinna Tax Review Board. He loved to hunt, fish and bowl, and especially enjoyed his camp on Moosehead Lake. He was an accomplished pilot with 2300 private hours and owned his own airplane. Byron retired in 1994 and spent time in Florida.
He is survived by 2 sisters, Anna May (Nelson) Collins of Denver, CO, and Marie J. McWilliams of New Kensington, PA; as well as several nieces, nephews, and many friends, including Dale and Jeanette Easler of Dexter, who have cared for him these past several years.
He was predeceased by his brother, Daniel W. Henderson, and a half sister, Lela Johnston.
A graveside funeral and committal service were held at 3 PM on Friday, June 21st, at the family lot, Morses Corner cemetery, Corinna, with the Rev. Harold Wheeler officiating. The officers of Pacific Lodge will also conduct a Masonic service at that time. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna. Vaughn (Sonny) Hurlburt

NEWPORT, ME & Hampton, Va - Vaughn Hurlburt, 75, died on June 17, 2013 in Hampton, VA. He was born on October 22, 1937 to his parents, John and Alyce Hurlburt.
Funeral service was held in Hampton, VA on Thursday, June 20th, 2013.
He is survived by wife Marjorie and three sons, Bruce, Glenn and David and wife Lani. Also three sisters, Beulah from Kittery, ME, Charlene from Whitenville, MA and Janice from Newport, ME, and one brother, Dennis from Florida. He was predeceased by one brother, Galen.

Lloyd P. Morrison

Pittsfield - Lloyd P. Morrison, 86, died peacefully on Friday, May 24, 2013, in Pittsfield. He was born on September 22, 1926, in Wilton, Maine, the son of the late Percy and Annie (Holland) Morrison.
Lloyd attended Wilton Academy and graduated from Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy during World War II. He married Beverly Elliott and they shared 64 years of marriage.
Lloyd was employed by the Franklin Journal for several years. He and his wife Beverly owned and operated several small grocery stores in Pittsfield until they retired. They enjoyed spending winters in Florida together for many years. Lloyd enjoyed tending to his grapes and repairing whatever needed fixing. He will be lovingly missed and remembered.
He is survived by his children, Catherine Bernard and husband Ron of Fairfield, Robert Morrison and wife Debbie Wolozin of Sudbury, Massachusetts, Betsy Mace of Detroit and Rodney Morrison and wife Dawn of Red Hook, New York; grandchildren, Sarah Bernard, Elizabeth Wolozin, Will Morrison, Ross Morrison and Alec Morrison; and a sister, Gloria Farmer of Portland.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Beverly Morrison and a brother, Rodney Morrison.
The family would like to say a sincere thank you to Paula and Heather who had taken special care of Lloyd at his home. They would also like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Sebasticook Valley Hospital and Pittsfield Rehab & Nursing for the care and compassion given to their dad in the last few weeks.
A private service will be held by the family.
Care for the family has been provided by Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, Pittsfield.

BRENDA KLEIN

TROY - Brenda Klein, 65 of Troy, formally of Southbury, Connecticut, died May 26, 2013 in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family after a long and courageous battle with renal cell carcinoma. She was the devoted wife of 48 years to Charles Klein. Brenda was born October 10, 1947 in Woodbury, Connecticut, a daughter of the late Herbert Benson and Elizabeth Benson. Brenda grew up in Southbury and was a 1965 graduate of Southbury High School. Charlie and Brenda moved to rural Maine in 1992 to “live the good life”. Brenda enjoyed spending time with family, her flower gardens, holidays, her dogs and weekends at the camp on Graham Lake. Brenda was a long time employee of the Sebasticook Valley Health Care Facility.
She leaves her husband Charles of Troy, Maine and three children and their families: son Charles and wife Rashel of Pittsfield, Maine, George and wife Shannon of Unity, Maine and Mary and husband Lee also of Troy, Maine; grandchildren, Jake, Nigel, Cameron, Caleb, Kiersten, Jasmine, Tanner and Daniel. A special niece, Edie Valerio and husband Dominick and their children Jessica and Emily of Palmdale, California.
Brenda, the youngest of six, leaves her sister Lois and husband Charles Moon of Port Charlotte, FL, Myron and wife Sylvia Benson of Washington Depot, CT, Sylvia and husband Tony Socci of Milford, CT, John Benson of Watertown CT, Jean and husband James Clark of Monroe, Ct as well as many nieces, nephews and family members.
A celebration of Brenda’s life was held from 3 to 6 PM on May 30th at the family house. In lieu of flowers, donation to Troy Flag Fund c/o Ron Cropley, Troy Town Office, 129 Rogers Road, Troy, ME 04987 or Wounded Warriors Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675-9917. The Klein family would like to thank Dr. William Bennett of Waterville, Dr. Robin Locke and nursing staff at HACCC in Augusta, Healthreach Hospice of Waterville, especially Danylle, Julianne, Cindy and Onneke. Verna and Gareth Southard

A Committal Service for our Mom and Dad, Verna and Gareth Southard will be held on June 15th at 2 PM at the Pittsfield Town cemetery.
After the service we are inviting family and friends to a memory celebration in honor of Mom and Dad. This celebration is in honor of how much they loved life and we would like to have family and friends share this time with memories they have of Mom and Dad.
The location of this celebration will be across from Todd’s home on Route 100 in back of the large white house. Just follow the signs. A buffet and barbecue will follow the celebration, if you have a favorite dish you would like to share that would be great, BYOB. Please join us... Todd and Darlene, Clint and Susan and Family.

Shirley M. Leighton

PORTLAND - Shirley M. Leighton, 76, of Portland, passed away after a brave battle with cancer on March 20, 2013, at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation surrounded by her family. Shirley was born on August 11, 1936, in Nashua, N.H., the daughter of Thomas Lones and Ruth (Lavoie) Lones. Shirley spent most of her life in Nashua, N.H., and Newport. She worked at the Guilford Woolen Mill in Newport for many years. She loved fantasy football, Bingo, crafting with her friends and was always on the go. Shirley was predeceased by her husbands, Milton Phillips, Frank Betts and Edward Leighton. She leaves behind a daughter, Cindy L. Philbrick and her husband James Philbrick, son Michael T. Phillips and wife Dawna M. Phillips, son Mark J. Phillips, son Steven Betts, daughter Dolores Reed and her husband Timothy Reed, son David Betts and long-time partner Sherry; and brothers, Clifford Lones, Lenny Lones and Tommy Lones. She is also survived by several step-children; and grandchildren. The family would like to send a special thanks to her dear friend Rose Charette and all her other friends at Northfield Green and the Salvation Army for making her last years so enjoyable. Per her request, there will be no formal ceremony. A graveside ceremony will be held in the spring, when she will be buried with her late husband, Frank Betts at the Sawyer cemetery in Plymouth. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to: Maine Cancer Foundation 170 U.S.

M. D. Irene Maillet

CORINNA - Marie Delia Irene (Poirier) Maillet, 98, died May 28, 2013 at a Houlton health care facility. She was born May 20, 1915 in East Hartford, CT, a daughter of Epiphane and Philomen (Dube) Poirier. Irene and her husband Albert moved to Corinna in 1974. She was a communicant of St. Annes Catholic Church in Dexter. Irene will be remembered for her love of cats.
She was predeceased by her first husband Henry Greenwood, her second husband, Albert Maillet, as well a brother and 5 sisters.
Irene is survived by a brother, Alphonse and wife Therese Poirior of Malartic, Quebec; a sister, Marie Anne Poirier of Laval, Quebec; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece Rina Cloutier of Stacyville. Irene had many friends in Corinna, including special friends, Louise Irish, Irene and Richard Archer, and Dalton and Donna Mullis.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 PM on Tuesday, June 4th, at St. Anne’s Church, 64 Free Street, Dexter, with the Rev. Fr. Paul Murray officiating. Friends may call at the church from noon until the time of services. Burial will be in Morse’s Corner cemetery, Corinna. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Annes Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 193, Dexter, ME 04930. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna. Those who wish may leave written condolences at www.CrosbyNeal.com
