GERTRUDE (EELLS) PRESCOTT

STETSON & CORINNA - Gertrude Elizabeth (Eells) Prescott, 96, also affectionately known to many as “Gram”, died July 15, 2014 at Dexter Health Care. She was born July 14, 1918 in Stetson, the daughter of the late Frank Pentz and Lillian May (Bubier) Eells. Gertrude lived, all but the last few years of her life, in Stetson where she attended Stetson elementary school and high school. She married Paul Hilton Prescott in 1935 and together they raised six children there. She loved her family very much and never tired of helping them any way she could.
She worked for Snowflake Canning Company in Corinna and later for Eastland Woolen Mill for approximately 20 years, retiring from the mill in 1980. Gertrude had a passion for flowers and gardening and loved working in them, often giving flowers and plants to people in town.
She is survived by four of her children, Norma Mathews and husband, Lee of Baja California, Mexico, Gayle Annett and husband, Richard of Greenville, Dayle Gardiner and husband, Kenneth of Corinna and William Prescott and wife, Barbara of Newport. “Gram” had 12 grandchildren, Bruce, Laurie, David, Donald, April, Brian, Kevin, Carey, Russell, Ryan, Wayne and Karen who were a great joy to her; 16 great grandchildren; and 6 great great grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Paul; a son Bruce; a daughter Judy Irvin; and a granddaughter, Wendy Holsopple. She was also predeceased by four brothers and their wives: Norman and Evelyn, Harold and Eileen, Howard and Grace, and Arthur; a half sister, Goldie Reed and husband Norman; a half brother, Collon Seavey; and a very special “close as a sister” friend, Pauline Colpitts.
A graveside service will be held 11 AM Tuesday, July 22nd, at the Clark’s Hill cemetery in Stetson. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral and Cremation Services, Newport. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086. HAROLD FRANKLYN PACKARD JR.

SPENCER, NC - Harold Franklyn Packard Jr., 58, died July 3, 2014. Harold is survived by his father Harold Packard Sr., sister Nina Hannah and husband Jeff, brother Chris Packard and wife Kim, aunt June Warren and serveral nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Gerry Packard.

MILTON GOODWIN TURNER

PLYMOUTH - Milton Goodwin Turner died on June 26, 2014, at a Portland Hospital from injuries received in an accident at home.
Milton was born on September 9, 1950, to Frank H. Sr and June (Nelson) Turner in Hartland, Maine. He graduated from Newport/Nokomis High School in 1969, enlisted in the Army serving 3 years and then serving in the Army National Guard giving him opportunity to work full time at the Bangor Flight Facility as crew chief and technician on the Army National Guard Helicopters. Milton was asked to be on the United States Precision Helicopter Team held in Chantilly, France, in 1989. His guard unit was deployed twice, once to Kuwait and then to Iraq. From the time he enlisted to his retirement, he served his country for 30 years.
Growing up, Milton developed the gift of drawing and eventually into an artist of oil painting. Playing music on his harmonica started as a challenge from his father. Just by ear he was able to draw the proper sounds from the instrument which was joined in chorus by his father’s dog.
Milton followed in his family’s love and tradition of hunting and fishing. Always coming home with the biggest fish or tale. When he received his exhorter license he was asked to be an assistant pastor at the Solid Rock Church of God in Pittsfield, Maine.
Milton is survived by his wife, Jo-Ann (Harding) Turner; sons, Mark and fiancée, Sheena, Kevin and Craig, all of Plymouth; siblings, Ernest and wife, Virginia, Frank Jr and wife, Geraldine, David, and his sister, Jane, all of Palmyra; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; and two brothers, Stephen and Gene.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made in his memory, may be given to the Solid Rock Church of God, Driveway Fund, PO Box 122, Pittsfield, Maine, 04967.
Visiting hours were held from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, June 30th, at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 1st, at the funeral home with the Rev. Tom Duperry officiating. A committal service followed a gathering at the Sawyers cemetery, in Plymouth.
Care has been provided by Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, Pittsfield.

LELAND M. BROOKS SR.

PALMYRA - Leland M. Brooks Sr., 79 died peacefully with his family by his side after a long battle with Cardiac disease on June 29th 2014.
He was born on May 29th 1935 in Pittsfield one of seven children to Alfred and Ina Brooks.
He was employed at Ethan Allen in Burnham for 30 years until they closed. He liked to hunt, fish, garden, cook and canning fresh vegetables to give out as gifts, most recent hobby was watching the cooking channel and trying new recipes.
He is survived by his wife Mickey of 24 years, his children Leland Jr and wife Debbie, Kelvin and Significant other Andrea, Gwen and husband Bill. His step children Scott and wife Brenda, Stephen and wife Vanessa, as well as several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is survived by his brother Bob and wife Lois, sister Ginny and husband Donald. He was predeceased by his parents and four sisters Gloria, Muriel, Carolyn, Shirley and stepson Craig.
A special thank-you to Faye and Randy for always being there throughout the years as well as Maine General Hospice, especially Hollie, Michelle and Nicole.

A celebration of life will be held on July 15th from 2-4 pm at the Palmyra Community Center/ Town Hall.

JAXSYN COLE LARRABEE

NEWPORT - Jaxsyn Cole Larrabee, infant son of Delores (Call) Larrabee died June 28, 2014, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Besides his mother of Newport, he is survived by 5 siblings, Kourtney, Meaghan, AJ, and Aleigha Bryant, and Dustin Little; maternal grandmother, Pearl Larrabee and her husband Robert of Newport; and maternal grandfather, Dale Call and his wife, Laurie of Palmyra.
A graveside service was held 11 AM Wednesday, July 2nd, at the West Garland cemetery in Garland, with Rev. Ellen Bridge officiating.

BRIAN A. ROBINSON, SR.

EXETER - Brian Alan Robinson, Sr., 49, received his freedom from his illness with diabetes June 14, 2014. He went quietly and peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 15, 1964, a son of Theodore and Rebecca (Severance) Robinson.
Brian was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 10. He didn’t allow his illness to keep him from doing what he wanted to do in life. We have all heard, “It’s not what happens to us, it’s what we choose to do about what happens to us, ” and that was Brian. He attended Dexter Regional High School and received his GED from Bangor High School. He had been employed at Dexter Shoe Company and GE of Bangor. He (alias, Dennis the Menace) loved hunting, fishing, riding his motorcycle, and spending time up to camp on East Grand Lake. He achieved his 5th Dan Degree Black Belt of Martial Arts and Sciences under the guidance of Sensei Grandmaster Floyd Burk, 10th Dan of California. Sensei Master Brian taught many students Traditional American Karate at his dojo (school) in Guilford.
He is survived by his mother; son Brian Jr. and wife Savannah (Richardson) and granddaughter Keira; his sisters and brothers in law, Karen and Richard Salisbury, Vickie and Lewis Easler; and brother Ted Robinson; nephews, Brad Wyman, Matthew and niece Katie Robinson; his aunt and uncle Maureen and Roy Hawkins; his best buddy Debbie Doore; special friends Mike Doore, Kathy Drew, Rhonda Fish and families; special cousin Laura Jones, and many family and friends. He is also survived by his 2 cats whom he loved very much, Tazz and Takara.
Brian was predeceased by his father, grandson Brock, and best friend Billy Fish.
Graveside services were held at 2 PM on Saturday, June 21st, at the family lot, Crowell cemetery, Cider Hill Road, Exeter, and was followed by a celebration of his life at the Exeter school. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. ROBERT E. PALMER

CORINNA - Robert Elmer Palmer, 79, died June 17, 2014 at a Bangor hospital following a long illness. He was born April 16, 1935 in Dexter, the only child of Raymond and Thelma (Nason) Palmer. He graduated from Corinna Union Academy, Class of 1954, and served in the U.S. Army and the Army Reserves for six years. On June 12, 1957, he married Betty Flewelling.
Bobby had been employed at the Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna and later, the Dexter Shoe Company in Dexter, until he retired due to ill health.
His hobbies included panning for gold, rock hounding, and collecting paperweights. He had a great love of anything science related, including geology, astronomy, and Egyptology. He was a fan of Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking. Bobby enjoyed boating, and their camp on Center Pond in Sangerville. He was always building things: their home, camp, fireplaces, circular staircases and slate pathways, to name a few. If the projects didn’t include cement, rocks, and metal, it wasn’t considered to be solidly constructed. He was a good gardener and started his own vegetable seedlings each year.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty of Corinna; 2 daughters and their husbands, Terri and Michael Crosby of Newport, and Vicki and Mark Easler of Corinna; 2 special granddaughters, Jenna and husband Tyson Grindle of Medford, NJ, and Kayla Easler of Bellefonte, PA; and a great grandson, Wyatt Andrew Grindle; cousins; several brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; and many friends, including longtime friends Claire “Sonny” and wife Anna Fields. He was predeceased by his beloved chihuahua, Foxey.
Visiting hours was held from 6 to 8 PM on Friday, June 20th, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Morse’s Corner cemetery, Corinna. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Patient Activity Fund, Hibbard Nursing Home, P.O. Box 150, Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426.

GERTRUDE (LITTLEFIELD) KIRKPATRICK

PLYMOUTH & MALABAR, FL - Gertrude L. Kirkpatrick, 91, died June 6, 2014 at a Bangor hospital. She was born March 9, 1923 in Old Town, a daughter of Louis and Edna (Brown) Littlefield.
Gertrude graduated from Old Town High School and served in the U.S. Navy as a W.A.V.E. during World War II. She attended Husson College and worked at UMO, where she met her husband. They owned and operated 2 Norge Laundromats and dry cleaners, as well as 59 apartments in the Bangor area. She was a member of the UMO extension service and the Emmanuel Bible Baptist Church in Plymouth.
She is survived by 2 sons, Leon, Jr. "Gene" and wife Kathy of Bell-Nor, Missouri, John and wife Susan of Dedham; 5 daughters, Wanda and husband Donald Crowell of Malabar, FL, Hazel and husband Rev. Roger Poulin of Waterville, Lois Corey and Gene Cote of Scarborough, Doris and husband Alan Dall of Bangor, Paula and husband Kurt Rockafellow of Plymouth; 3 sisters, Bernice Cousins of Old Town and Southwest Harbor, Beatrice McCleary of Wisconsin, and Lois Gile of Eliot; 13 grandchildren, Troy Corey, Tamara Gonzalez, James Chichetto, Leon “Lee” Kirkpatrick III, Michael and Erik Bellandi, Justin and Ryan Kirkpatrick, Tabatha Caso, Jenn Mahaney, Amber Dall, Garrett and Aaron Rockafellow; and 9 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leon E. Kirkpatrick, Sr. on May 5, 2006.
Friends called at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport from 6-8 PM on Tuesday. Funeral services were held at 11 AM Wednesday, June 11th, at the Emmanuel Bible Baptist Church in Plymouth with the Rev. Bob Emrich officiating. Burial was in the East Dover cemetery. H. KENNETH WEST

WESTERLY, RI - H. Kenneth West of Springbrook Rd, Westerly, passed away suddenly at home June 3, 2014. He was born in Westerly, son of the late Harold and Helen West. On October 8, 1955 he married the love of his life, Ann Cecilia Carr. Together they raised five children. Ken was a farmer all of his life. He moved his family to a Pittsfield, ME dairy farm in 1973.
In 1988 he, Ann and their daughter Kendra moved back to Westerly, where he continued to farm at his childhood home. Ken was active in The Knights of Columbus in Pittsfield, where he rose to the position of 4th degree Knight and Grand Knight of the St. Agnes Council.
In addition to farming during his later years, he especially enjoyed his employment at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home in Westerly, where he was a valued and well respected co-worker.
Ken was predeceased by his wife Ann. He is survived by his children Paul West, Eileen Wright and Patricia Quint all of Pittsfield. Jack West-Belvin of West Roxbury, MA and Kendra Turo of Westerly, thirteen adoring grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
His love of family became stronger every day. He taught his children and grandchildren to love unconditionally and to see the good in everyone.
Visiting hours will be held in Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home 59 Spruce St. Thursday from 5-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Clare Church Crandall Ave. Westerly Friday at 11:30 AM. There will be no procession from the funeral home to the church. Burial will be in River Bend cemetery, Westerly, RI.

JAMES W. SMITH

BONITA SPRINGS, FL - James Wilbur Smith passed away at age 83 on June 10, 2014 at Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs, Florida after a long, two-year battle with colon cancer. He is survived by his loving wife, Jolene Tompkins Smith and three children from his first marriage. One son, Douglas James in Palmyra, and two daughters, Raelene Towne in Georgia, and Andrea Delligatti in Georgia, and numerous grandchildren. Son Lawrence from Plymouth is predeceased from a truck accident.
Surviving step children include Shawn Baugh, Shannon Rogers and Jonathon Rogers. James is survived by two brothers, Hadley Edwin Smith and wife Robin living on the homestead farm in Palmyra and in Virginia, and Sterling Ithamer Smith and wife Georgiana living in Phippsburg, Maine. Half brothers Charles Wilbur, Stephen Ashley, Lauriston Getchel, and half sister Marguerite Almira are predeceased.
James was born August 25, 1930, the son of Wilbur Ashley and Frances Lillian Ireland (Jessome) Smith. He was born at home in the same room where his father was born in 1884. He walked with his brothers to the one-room Adams school on Route 2 in Palmyra for 9 years, graduated from Newport High School in 1948, and completed a two-year agricultural program at the University of Maine in Orono. He was an active participant in school sports and was a 32-degree Anah Shrine Mason.
In 1954 he took over ownership and operation of the three-farm family homestead in Palmyra after the death of his father and operated the farm until 1960 when he sold his cattle and equipment, bought the Andrew Towle farm at the intersection in Newport, and started an excavation/construction business as Smith Construction in Newport which he continued 30 years until he retired in 1990 and moved to Florida. Son Doug Smith, a graduate of Wentworth College, provided civil engineering expertise and son Lawrence operated heavy equipment. Smith Construction built many projects throughout central Maine including Triangle Plaza in Newport. As a young man James received numerous agricultural awards, was a member of the school district board and the board of Sebasticook Valley Hospital, and was active in local public activities. The Smith farm was sold to brother Hadley in 1984.
Cremation was provided by Fort Meyers Mortuary Service. Graveside burial services will be held at the Smith family lot at the Goodwin cemetery on Smith Road in Palmyra at a date to be announced. Donations to St. Jude Cancer Research may be made in lieu of flowers www.stjude.org.

LARRY F. COSTON

MADISON - Larry F. Coston, 52, of Madison passed away unexpectedly June 4, 2014 in Hartland. He was born in Hartland on September 5, 1961, the son of F. Larry and Janice (Wyman) Coston. In 1981, he graduated from the Nokomis High School, as well as from the Dexter Regional Vocational Center as an automotive mechanic and from truck driving school in which he received his CDL license. He served in the Maine Army National Guard as a Combat Engineer. Larry worked as a truck driver and then as a millwright. For the last 22 years, Larry was a proud team member for Cianbro Corporation, where he leaves behind many friends.
Larry married his soul mate, Linda Soucy, on July 17, 1999. Together they built their dream home on the lake and shared their love of travel, sports, friendships and laughter.
Larry grew up in Hartland where he was known as Bugga. He was an avid sports fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox, as well as NASCAR. As a child, Larry enjoyed summers at his family camp on Moose Pond and at the Unity Race Track where he eventually raced his own stock car, number 17. Snowmobiling and boating were always special highlights of his life. Golf became a new sport that he enjoyed over the last few years with his brother-in-law, Greg and several close friends. Larry enjoyed playing pool and horseshoes. He was catcher on the Elks SkowVegas Baseball Team - Sons of Willy. Larry loved music, especially from the 70’s and 80’s. His memory of every word, to every song, was uncanny. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Larry was a member of the Abnaki Snowmobile Club, the Wesserunsett Lake Association and a member, as well as a past officer, of the Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge.
Larry is survived by his wife, Linda of Madison, his stepson, Shaun Gronda, grandson, Blake Gronda and mother-in-law, Elizabeth Soucy all of Skowhegan. His paternal grandmother: Ardis Coston of Salem, Massachusetts; Larry has two sons: Brian and his wife Jenna Coston and Larry Coston and fiancé, Shelby Maloon, all from Dexter: Two daughters: Julie Coston and fiancé, Philip Cote of Hartland and Michelle Coston and fiancé, Adam Collins of North New Portland; Larry’s grandchildren are Zachary, Brandon, Caleb, Madelyn, Destiny, Katelyn, Leanna, Jasmine, Cayden and Jayden.
Two sisters, Estelle and Harvey Johnston of Palmyra, Sara and Benjamin Ayer of Newport, as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Larry is predeceased by his grandfather, Francis L. Coston, his parents, F. Larry and Janice Coston, his father-in-law, Arthur Soucy and his stepson, Nathan Gronda.
Larry enjoyed his many friends and Elks family with whom he loved to share his jokes. He was an honest, hard working man who would do anything for anyone. Larry was so proud to show off the home he built on Lake Wesserunsett. He was always eager to pile folks on his pontoon boat for a ride around the lake, where the sunsets over the western mountains would take your breath away. Larry’s heart and soul will forever remain on the lake. When you see the sun set, please think of Larry and always remember, to be kind to one another.
Funeral Services will be held at 12:30 PM, Saturday, June 21st, 2014 at the Federated Church, Island Avenue, Skowhegan, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. An Elks ceremony will be conducted as part of the service at church. Burial will be at the Southside cemetery in Skowhegan.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine 04986.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Larry’s memory to the Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge, Maine Children’s Cancer Program, 21 Silver Street, Skowhegan, Maine 04976. Or, to the Nathan Gronda Scholarship Fund, c/o Shaun Gronda, PO Box 2101, Skowhegan, ME 04976.
