EDNA ELEANOR GREELEY

PITTSFIELD - Edna Eleanor Greeley, 87, passed away peacefully at Sebasticook Valley Hospital on Thursday, February 26, with her loving family by her side. She was born on August 18, 1927, the eldest daughter of Nellie and Ernest Graham. She was a 1946 graduate of Maine Central Institute and a graduate of Greenway Beauty School in Newport. She operated a beauty shop out of her home for over 50 years.
On March 11, 1950, she married her high school sweetheart, Weldon Greeley. Together they raised their three children on the family potato farm, Rock Maple Farms. Wherever she was needed, that’s where you found her. Whether it be in her beauty shop cutting a client’s hair, driving to pick up parts for equipment, or in the barn working alongside her family processing the potatoes for market. She passed onto her children her strong work ethic and that continued on to her grandchildren.
Family time was very important to her. Her favorite holiday was Thanksgiving when her entire family could be together which also included her two sisters, their husbands and their children.
She loved to go dancing with her husband. Whether they were dancing a waltz, the foxtrot, or square dance, it gave her much enjoyment. She was a great cook and one of her families’ favorite recipes was her “Nellie cake”. When she made it, you better not wait too long to slice a piece, or it would be gone! She was very talented when it came to sewing, knitting and crocheting. As a matter of fact, before she was married , she would work all week sewing a new outfit for her weekend date with Weldon. She was a member of a local knitting club and made several friendships over the years. She loved to shop at Marden’s. Her family didn’t have to ask where she bought something, they knew she bought it when she saw it at Marden’s! She was a dedicated Red Sox fan. Every season she would hang her flag outside, keep a printed schedule and watch every single game, even if it meant staying up later than her normal bed time!
She was a loving, generous person who will be missed by her husband of 65 years, Weldon Greeley; daughter, Debora Varney and husband, David; two sons, Thomas Greeley and wife, Sally and Steven Greeley and wife, Cheryl; five grandchildren, Stephanie McGinnis and husband, Robbie, Brandy Greeley and partner, Chad Vintinner, Bryan Greeley and partner, Alexandra Faria and her daughter, Gabriela, Alex Greeley and wife, Becky, Amy Dean and husband, Keith; three great-grandchildren, Nathan McGinnis, Gage Greeley and Taylor Greeley; two sisters, Pauline Wood of Pittsfield and Dorothy Obar of Naugatuck, CT.
The family requests that donations be made in Edna’s name to the Universalist Church, 112 Easy Street, Pittsfield, Maine, 04967.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 13, at the Village cemetery, Peltoma Avenue, Pittsfield, with the Rev. Kevin Brooks officiating.
Care has been provided by Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, Pittsfield.

Just a Common Soldier by Lawrence Vaincourt
He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes, every one.
And tho’ sometimes, to his neighbors, his tales became a joke,
All his Legion buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke.
But we’ll hear his tales no longer for old Bill has passed away,
And the world’s a little poorer, for a soldier died today.
He will not be mourned by many, just his children and his wife,
For he lived an ordinary and quite uneventful life.
Held a job and raised a family, quietly going his own way,
And the world won’t note his passing, though a soldier died today.
If we cannot do him honor while he’s here to hear the praise,
Then at least let’s give him homage at the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline in a paper that would say,
Our Country is in mourning, for a soldier died today.
