BARRY EMERSON SPAULDING

HARTLAND — “You can take the boy out of Maine, but you can’t take Maine out of the boy.”
That was a phrase I heard from my father as far back as I can remember. Barry Emerson Spaulding, who died Thursday, August 27th, loved his hometown of Hartland. As a boy Barry worked at the local tannery and built a career that moved him to New Jersey, California, Nebraska, Florida, and set him out on travels as far as Thailand, Australia, Japan, and Argentina (among many others).
But of all those places, Barry never seemed as happy or as content as he was in Maine—with a cheap American beer gazing out onto Moose Pond.
Dad was the most stubborn, hard-working, caring, funny, successful, ridiculous, smart, generous, stingy, argumentative person I have ever known. He took good care of his family always in life, and left us a bonus $425 in loose change stashed throughout his bedroom in death. He was dearly beloved by his wife, sons, sisters, granddaughters, cousins, aunts, uncles, parents and friends—but especially his miniature dachshund named Heidi (whose ashes he explicitly instructed us to mix with his).
From the humblest of beginnings to the most extraordinary of travels, Barry never forgot where he was from. And maybe that’s what made dad so special—he was just a poor boy from Maine out exploring the world, against all odds. Barry didn’t know how to be anyone but himself. And we’ll miss him every day.
