BRIAN M. LEAVITT

PITTSFIELD — Brian M. Leavitt, 56, died on Friday, January 29, at his home in Pittsfield.
He was born on July 18, 1959, in Lincoln, Maine, the son of Vernard Leavitt and Donna (Burgess) Leavitt York. He graduated from Maine Central Institute with the class of 1978. He was employed by Sonoco for over 30 years.
Brian was well known for his athletic abilities. He absolutely loved football and basketball and was an avid Red Sox, Patriots and Celtic fan. He was a happy, loving man who gave the best big bear hugs! He was proud of his apple and pear trees that he cultivated for many years. He coached many at the Pittsfield Rec and was always willing to share his pointers with the kids. He loved being with his granddaughters. He was known as Papa, the Man, the Myth and The Legend!
He is survived by his loving wife, Lori Leavitt of Pittsfield; children, Amanda Riendeau and husband, Dan, of Corinna, Brian Leavitt and companion, Ashleigh Richmond, of Pittsfield, Ceilia Weymouth of Pittsfield and Gage Donnell of Pittsfield; granddaughters, Jyllian, Trinity and Susie; stepmother, Janet Leavitt of Lincoln; siblings, Vicki Martin of Pittsfield, Karen Brown of Rhode Island, Joe Leavitt and wife, Yesenia, of Massachusetts, Lucretia Robichaud of Old Orchard Beach, Jamie Cavanaugh of Gray, Rob Tomilson of Bangor and Lisa Tomilson of Lincoln; friend and mother of Amanda and Brian, Connie Jones of Pittsfield; father -in -law and mother-in-law, Dan and Bette Stevens; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Vernard Leavitt; mother and stepfather, Dennis and Donna York; siblings, Craig Leavitt, Phillip Leavitt, Lori Bates, Vernard Leavitt Jr and Gail Leavitt.
The family received friends from 5 to 8 PM, Tuesday, February 2, 2015 at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield, Maine. A funeral service was held at 4 PM, Wednesday, February 3, at the funeral home with Pastor Jim Boughman officiating. The family requested that guests come comfortably dressed for services and to wear either Red Sox, Patriots, Celtic or MCI sports attire to honor Brian. A gathering was held at the Sebasticook Valley Elks Lodge following the service. A committal will be held in the spring at the Village cemetery, Peltoma Avenue, Pittsfield.
Memorial Donations may be given to the Pittsfield Recreation Department for the benefit of Softball and Baseball Program, c/o Town of Pittsfield, 112 Somerset Avenue, Pittsfield, Maine, 04967.

MILDRED (BICKFORD) SMITH

EXETER & CORINNA — Mildred B. Smith, 72, went home to be with the Lord February 2, 2016. She was born September 19, 1943 in Bangor a daughter of Leslie and Gladys (Davis) Bickford.
After graduating as a LPN from Thayer Nursing School, she became co-owner of Clyde L. Smith Inc. General Store in Exeter for over 25 years. Mildred later was employed at Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Exeter.
She is survived by 2 sons, Brent and William; a daughter Melanie Carlson and husband Scott; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mildred was predeceased by her parents; her husband of 51 years, Alan Smith; and her siblings, Fern and Henry Foshay.
A memorial service and graveside committal will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna. Those who wish may leave written tributes at www.CrosbyNeal.com

JOHN H. CURRIER, JR.

HARTLAND — John H. Currier, Jr., 75, passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2016.
John grew up in the Cleveland suburb of South Euclid, Ohio where he graduated from Charles F. Brush High School. He lived in Charlevoix, Michigan where he worked at Medusa Cement Company from 1971 to 1990 in Shipping and Receiving. John also served four years in the U.S. Coast Guard as Petty Officer Second Class.
John met Sylvia Angel in 2001 and moved to Maine to be together. They were married in 2004. Many summer days were spent camping with friends and family, or boating on the lake. John and Sylvia had many wonderful adventures together. A favorite trip of John’s was an Alaskan cruise. John was an avid collector of Lionel Trains. He and friends attended many train shows across the country.
John was a Second Section Unit member at the Anah Shrine in Bangor. He also volunteered at the Anah Shrine Circus. He was a member of the Tri-County Shrine Club and Anah Temple Camping Club.
John was predeceased by his adoptive parents Jean and John H. Currier, Sr., the mother of his children Nancy (McDermott) Currier and two sisters.
John is survived by his loving wife Sylvia Angel-Currier; his daughters, Brenda Currier of Denver, Colorado and Tammy Currier of Cleveland, Ohio; her two sons and their wives Lucas and Dawn Angel of Corinna, (two grandchildren Paige and Dylan Angel who will miss “Little Grandpa”), Jason Angel and Patricia Robinson-Angel of Ontario, Canada.
Friends may call from 4 to 6 PM on Monday, February 1st at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, where a funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, February 2nd, with Pastor Corey Hamilton officiating. A graveside committal service will be planned in the spring at Pine Grove cemetery, Hartland. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 51 U.S. Route 1, Suite M, Scarborough, ME 04074.

PHILIP A SWETT

SEAL HARBOR — Philip Atwood Swett, 71, passed away on January 18, 2016 at his home from a form of acute leukemia. He was born June 21, 1944 in Dexter, the son of Arthur H, and Karlene L. (Banks) Swett.
Philip graduated from Newport High School in 1962. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy as a corpsman attached to the 7th Marines, 3rd Battalion, U.S. Marines, during the Vietnam War. During his service he was awarded a Purple Heart, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze star, and Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with cluster. Philip returned home to attend Husson college and received a B.S. in Business Management, then on to Colby College studying pre-med for 2 years. Philip was a member of the American Legion Post 103. He established his career as a Food and Beverage Director of many country clubs throughout the United States until his retirement in 2006.
Philip is survived by his brother Michael A Swett of Kissimmee, FL and his sister Judith L Swett of Seal Harbor, ME, and many cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews and special friends Kathy Austin and Robert Spiegel. He was much loved by his family and friends.
A service of remembrance was held at 11 AM, Saturday, January 30, 2016, at Abbey Chapel, Main Street, Seal Harbor, a reception followed downstairs for family and friends to celebrate Philip's fun loving life. ELIZABETH WENTWORTH

HARTLAND — Elizabeth Wentworth, 91, died peacefully on Saturday, January 23, 2016, at Cedar Ridge Center in Skowhegan.
Betty was born on October 2, 1924, in Houlton, Maine. She grew up in the home of William and Myrtle Toothaker and attended schools in Carmel. She married Wallace Wentworth and together they raised six children. She was a wonderful homemaker, rising early (before the roosters) to make sure her household tasks were completed in a timely fashion. When she wanted something accomplished, she wanted it done yesterday! She enjoyed cooking and watching television. She liked her cartoons and her favorite show, The Price is Right.
She is survived by her children, Joyce Landry of Skowhegan, Larry Wentworth and wife, Rachel, of Canaan, Preston Wentworth of Hartland, Gloria Pease of Skowhegan and Charlene Babnaw of Hartland; grandchildren, Freddie, Richard, Raymond, Amy, Crystal, Wanda, Mike, Darcy, Jessica, Jason and Nicole; many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wallace Wentworth; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Rhonda Wentworth; son-in-law, Michael Babnaw; and grandson, Kevin Babnaw.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the Cedar Ridge Center for their excellent care. A special thanks to her nurse, Melissa, for the love and compassion she gave to Betty.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Jordan cemetery, North Hartland Road, Hartland, with the Reverend Scott Jones officiating.

BARBARA E. ORCUTT

DIXMONT — Barbara E. Orcutt, 53, died unexpectedly January 25th, 2016 at her Dixmont home following a short period of ill health. She was born in Rumford, July 4th, 1962, the daughter of Charles and Neva (Cross) Harthorne. She was a graduate of Telstar High School and also a graduate of Kennebec Valley Technical College. For many years Barbara worked at Kennebec Valley Technical College as a secretary until her disability forced her to retire.
Barbara liked to work in her gardens and taking care of her dogs. She loved her family and taking care of her home.
She is survived by her husband Cecil A. Orcutt of Dixmont, her mother Vera Harthorne of Brooks, One son Bradley Allen Hindman of Fairfield, two daughters Jennifer Lynn Hart of Greenwood, Kassandra Marie Orcutt of Pittsfield, two brothers, Ricky Harthorne of Ill., James Harthorne of Limington, one daughter, Debra Harthorne of Brooks, 8 grandchildren; Kelsey, Jacie, Junior, Dakota, Tanner, Ahleighya, Sammy, Lucas, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

THIRNWOOD F. MORGAN, JR.

PALMYRA — Thirnwood F. Morgan, Jr., passed away on January 20, 2016, at home in West Palm Beach with his wife Jo-Anne, sons, Jeffrey and Matthew, brother, Gerald and grandson, Sean at his side. He was born on May 31, 1932, in Palmyra, ME, the second oldest of nine to the late Thirnwood Morgan Sr. and Lenora (Brooks) Morgan.
Thirnwood graduated from Hartland Academy and enlisted in the Navy in 1951. He served on the destroyer USS Melvin until 1955. While in the Navy he sent money home to help his parents and put his sister through college at Husson College in Bangor Maine. He returned to Maine where he met Jo-Anne Kelso, whom he would spend the next 61 years together, 57 of them married . He attended and graduated from the University of Maine with a bachelor's and a master's degree in education. He also accumulated many credits beyonds this, believing you should always keep learning.
Thirnwood and Jo-Anne moved to Gloversville, NY in 1959 and he started working as a history teacher at the high school. He later served as a guidance counselor, assistant principal, adult education principal and track coach. In 1971 he became the first principal of Estee Middle School. He remained at this position until his retirement in 1992. Thirnwood tried to make every child who walked through his hallways feel important and special. He would often post signs and hand out pens with the phrase, "Who You Are Makes A Difference, " a saying that described exactly who he was. After retirement, Thirnwood moved back to Maine where he donated much of his time to the food bank and library and served as president of the board at the local hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Jo-Anne of WPB, FL; and his sons, Jeffrey and wife Wendy of WPB, Matthew of WPB, and Thomas and wife Amy of Gloversville, NY; his brothers, Dana and his wife Sevilla of Hartland, ME, and Gerald and his wife Kathy of Plano, TX; his sisters, Peggy of Hartland, ME and Betty of Waterville, ME; and sister-in-law, Linda of Kindwood, TX; his grandchildren, Charli of Gloversville, NY, Sean of WPB, FL and Shannon of WPB, FL; his great-grandson, Jordan; and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
Thirnwood was predeceased by his parents; sister, Vivian and her husband Warren; sister, Joanne and husband Mel; brothers, James and Freddie; and nephew James and niece, Susan.
Perhaps Thirnwood's time seems too brief, but we must not lengthen it with grief. Share with me that Thirnwood has been set free.

RAYMOND JOSEPH BEAUDREAU

WILLIMANTIC — Raymond Joseph Beaudreau passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2016, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. A long-time resident of Willimantic, Maine, Raymond was an accomplished woodsman, hunter, craftsman, and storyteller. Raymond’s extensive employment history as a technician and engineer in the cable television industry included building and improving some of the first infrastructure projects in New England and beyond. Prior to his retirement, he operated as an independent traveling consultant to companies such as Continental Cablevision of Massachusetts.
He was born on October 5th, 1929 in North Adams, Massachusetts to Raymond and Fleurange Beaudreau into a proud Canadian-American family and grew up speaking both English and French. He served in the United States Army Medical Corp. While in the service, he was an Orthopedic Mechanic, making braces and casts, and he had a military qualification as a Rifle Marksman. He was honorably discharged on June 17, 1948.
Raymond and his beloved wife, Madeline, would have celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary this month. They spent many years together building live-edge pine furniture, native pack baskets, coveted by collectors as far away as Dresden, Germany.
Raymond is survived by his wife Madeline; Thomas and Linda Beaudreau of Williamstown, Massachusetts, Michael and Patricia Beaudreau of Scottsville, Virginia, Raymond Jr. and Neysa Beaudreau of Williamstown, Massachusetts, Cheryl and Michael Steuer of Adams, Massachusetts, Tracy Bailey Fraize and Darrell Fraize of Bridgton, Maine, and Sharon and Scott Fairbanks of Tyngsboro, Massachusetts.
He was predeceased by his daughter Beverly. Raymond is also survived by 16 grandchildren, Brooke, Aimee, Benjamin, Michelle, Heather, Amber, Michael, Justin, Natalie, Jeremy, Jesse, Chelsea, Myles, Connor, Michael and Joshua; and 10 great-grandchildren; his brother Francis Beaudreau; and sister, Anne Vachereau; as well as a close group of exceptional friends and neighbors.
There will be no public services.
The family suggests donations in his memory be made to the Monson Volunteer Fire Department, 10 Tenney Hill Road, Monson, ME 04464.

MARILYN (LANGLEY) BUTLER

CARMEL & BANGOR — Marilyn went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on January 16, 2016 surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on January 20, 1936 in Newport, a daughter of the late Alfred and Gladys (Kilcollins) Langley. Marilyn grew up in Pittsfield. She was one of 10 siblings. They were well known in the area as the "Langley Girls." Marilyn graduated from MCI in 1955. She was employed as a telephone operator with New England Telephone. She married James Butler in June 1958 and left her job to raise their 6 children. They lived in Plymouth and Carmel. She was the secretary of the Carmel Full Gospel Church and belonged to the VFW Auxiliary #9955 in Pittsfield. She helped James own and operate Carmel Auto Repair. They enjoyed many family camping trips to Dummer's Beach and Prince Edward Island. Once her children were grown, Marilyn accompanied James on many over the road trips while he drove as an independent trucker. He was truly the love of her life.
She enjoyed scrapbooking, knitting, taking photos and using the computer to create personalized items for friends and family. She would knit baby sweaters, buntings and blankets for all "new arrivals" in the family. She also enjoyed cooking for her family. Marilyn was active in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had so much love to give and she was loved dearly by them all. She will be deeply missed.
She is survived by a sister, Ruth Walker and a brother Phillip Langley, both of Florida; six children, Kathy and Tom Neill of St. Albans, Vicky and Colby Morrell of Carmel, James W. Butler, Jr. of Bangor, Jill and Matthew Lovley of Astatula, Florida, Mark and Crystal Butler of Carmel, Melissa King and Heidi Hellstrom of Arundel; 13 grandchildren, Emily McDonough, Kelly Lovley, Thomas J Neill, Ashley Butler, Stacey Morrell, Benjamin Butler, Jennifer Fitzgerald, Dustin King, Darin King, Julia Butler, Emily Shorey, Ashley and Eric Hellstrom; 9 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by James on October 9, 2014; 6 sisters, Barbara Langley, Anita McCormack, Pat Laney, Thelma “Dee” Madore, Edna Chadbourne, Gloria Bilodeau; and a brother Alfred “Sonny” Langley.
Friends called from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services were held 11 AM Wednesday, January 20th, with Pastor Brian Woodbury officiating. Spring graveside committal services will be held 2 PM, Monday, May 2nd at Riverside cemetery, Newport. The family would like to express a special thank you to all those who cared for Marilyn during this past year. BESSIE L. MELANSON

ST. ALBANS — Bessie L. Melanson, 91, died January 20th, 2016 at a Pittsfield hospital following a short illness. She was born in Springfield, Maine, May 30, 1924 the daughter of Jesse and Evie (Smith) Dicker, She was educated in Springfield schools. Bessie was married to Bennie Melanson who predeceased her on July 16, 1994.
Bessie worked at Jim’s General Store in St. Albans for several years. For 21 and a half years, Bessie was employed at Sanfield Nursing Home in the Laundry.
She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and working in her gardens both flower gardens and vegetable gardens.
Bessie is survived by her son and wife Peter and Joanne Melanson of Palmyra, her daughter Joyce M. Bowman of St. Albans, her brother Henry Dicker of PA, five grandchildren; Sheryl, Michael, Peter Jr., Kelly, and Ronnie, 8 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, and another one due in August, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her son-in-law Errol Bowman and 11 brothers and sisters.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 PM May 15, 2016 at the Maloon cemetery in St. Albans. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High Street, Newport.
