She was the oldest of 6 children. She attended Detroit Village grammar school from first to eighth grade. The school had a wood stove and back house.
Some of Nadine's fondest memories as a child were when she spent weekends with her Grammy Whitaker (Edith Morse Whitaker). Edith always smelled like peppermint and spruce gum. She was prone to sick headaches and would rub peppermint on her forehead. Nadine would dress up in her high heeled shoes and walk up and down the road in front of her house in Detroit. Edith would tell Nadine she looked peekard and would fix up a concoction of Cod Liver Oil and orange juice. Nadine would not eat carrots or eggs and Edith would try to hide them in mashed potatoes. Nadine remembers her Grammy Whitaker as always being loving and kind to her as a child and as an adult.
Nadine went to high school at Maine Central Institute, Pittsfield and graduated in 1953. She met her future husband Edmund Currier Cooper while he attended M.C.I. as a prep school student. In 1953 Nadine moved to Lewiston and attended Nurses Training School at Central Maine General Hospital.

Their first child Deborah Elise was born August 31, 1954 at the Webber Hospital in Biddeford during Hurricane Carol and the hospital lost power during the delivery. In 1956 they moved to Yuba City, CA where Ed had an engineering job on the new highway being built to Truckee, CA for the 1960 Winter Olympic Games at Squaw Valley California. On March 5, 1958 their second child Kathy Sue was born in Yuba City, CA. They returned to Kennebunkport in the summer of 1958 and Ed got a job with the State of Maine as a Civil Engineer on road construction. On August 1, 1959 their third child Edmund Currier Jr. was born at the Augusta General Hospital in Augusta. He predeceased Nadine on February 12, 2016. On June 4, 1962 their fourth child Jane Margaret was born at the Gardiner General Hospital in Gardiner.
Nadine is survived by her children and 2 brothers, Colby Whitaker of S. China, and Howard Whitaker of S. Carolina; two sisters Sharon Crosby of Camp Benson, Newport, Linda Whitaker, Camp Benson, Newport; 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Edward Whitaker.
While Nadine and Ed lived on Highland Avenue in Gardiner during the 60s, Nadine had a good friend Julia Jones who taught her how to play bridge.
In 1967 Nadine decided to finish her nursing training. She graduated from the Central Maine General School of Nursing in Lewiston. After graduation she went to work for the Augusta Mental Health Institute. At that time they had 1700 patients.
Nadine continued her education and graduated from St Joseph's College with a B.S.P.A. degree. She continued to work part-time. She next graduated from the University of Maine Portland-Gorham as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Nadine worked at A.M.H.I. for 25 years.
