Clayton James Phair

WATERVILLE — Clayton James Phair, 76, of Francis Street, died early Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, upon arrival at Inland Hospital, Waterville.

He was born in Berlin, N.H., May 29, 1924, the son of Ernest and Catherine (Goodchild) Phair.

Mr. Phair attended high school, and was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He had been employed at C.F. Hathaway for 43 years, retiring in 1984 as superindendent of cutting.

He was a member of Waterville Country Club, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Phair was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Arnold Phair; and his wife, Lorraine Pooler Phair, Sept. 28, 1997, whom he married April 19, 1947.

He is survived by two sons and their wives, Randall and Christine, and Stephen and Shannon, all of Oakland; two sisters, Mrs. David (Eleanor) Hallee, of Waterville, and Mrs. Joseph (Shirley) Roy, of Winslow; three brothers, Ernest Phair, and his wife, Regina, and Donald Phair, and his wife, Claire, all of Waterville, and Robert Phair, and his wife, Lana, of Winslow; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a close friend, Lucille Guerrette, of Waterville.

Visiting hours will be 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Sacred Heart Church, 70 Pleasant St., Waterville. Interment will be in the spring in St. Francis Cemetery, Waterville.

Dorothy E. Hartsgrove

MADISON — Dorothy E. Hartsgrove, 82, a resident of Lakewood Road, Madison, formerly of Waterville and Goodwins Mills, went home to be with the Lord and Savior on Friday, March 30, 2001, in Skowhegan.

She was born July 14, 1918, in Woodland, a daughter of Harry W. and Viola P. (Little) Searles and attended Woodland schools.

Mrs. Hartsgrove was very devoted to her family, and was a very active member of World of Life Assembly Church, Skowhegan.

She was predeceased by her husband, Berton Hartsgrove, in 1989.

Mrs. Hartsgrove is survived by one son, Rev. Wayne Hartsgrove, of Skowhegan; seven sisters, Irene Harris, of Dayton, Lillian Smith, of Tucson, Ariz., Norma Milinski, of Florida, Pearl Hubert, of Madison, Alberta Eaton, of Mountain Home, Idaho, Elva Wing, of Gorham, and Susie Knowlton, of Walnut Shade, Mo.; five brothers, Theodore Searles, of Wells, Harry Searles, of Bethany, Conn., Harvey Searles, of Canaan, Raymond Searles, of Waterboro, and Robert Searles, of Walnut Shade; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, April 2, at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 3. A memorial service will also be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 8, at Word of Life Assembly Church, Skowhegan. Spring interment will be in Goodwins Mills Cemetery, Goodwins Mills.

Should friends desire, memorials in Dorothy's name may be made to Word of Life Assembly Building Fund, P.O. Box 429, Skowhegan 04976.

Lucinda R. Harris

JAY — Lucinda R. Harris, 60, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Sandy River Center For Health Care, Farmington, where she had been a resident for the past three weeks following a long illness.

She was born April 9, 1940, in Auburn, the daughter of Freeman R. and Ellen D. (Bailey) Leighton, and was educated in Turner schools.

She married Reuben Harris May 27, 1965, in Turner. He died Nov. 19, 1996.

Mrs. Harris was a homemaker most of her life, and a member of Order of the Eastern Star of New Sharon. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and hunting.

She was predeceased by a sister, Joanne, and a brother, Durgin.

Lucinda is survived by three daughters, Lucinda Greenwood, of Turner, Ellen Savage, of Wilton, and Judy Mitchell, of Phillips; a sister, Sara Cochran, of Turner; three grandsons, Thomas, Benjamin and Zachary; two stepgrandchildren, Karen and Cheyenne; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 2, at Adams Funeral Home, 108 Court St., Farmington. A graveside service will be held in the spring.

Friends who wish, may make donations in her memory to American Cancer Society, Maine Division, Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011.

Dale H. Caverly

CLINTON — Dale H. Caverly, 27, of Clinton, passed away, Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Wells.

He was born in Waterville, Jan. 1, 1974, the son of Francis H. and Suzanne H. (Hardy) Caverly.

Dale was a graduate of Lawrence High School, class of 1992, and attended Ohio Auto Diesel Tech, in Cleveland. He also attended welding classes at Kennebec Valley Technical College, in Fairfield.

Dale had worked on his family's dairy farm all of his life. He enjoyed taking care of the crops, and was also the farm's mechanic.

Dale was a member of the Shawmut Chapel, and was active with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, teaching the tractor safety course. He especially enjoyed teaching hands-on with the youngsters who were learning how to drive farm tractors. Dale was also active with tractor pulling in the local area.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Brainard Caverly Jr., and his maternal grandfather, Harold Hardy; two uncles, Edgar "E.C." Caverly and Brainard "Pudge" Caverly III.

Survivors include his parents, Frank and Susie Caverly, of Clinton; his brother, Neal Caverly, of Clinton; his paternal grandmother, Evelyn Caverly, of Clinton, and maternal grandmother, Birdena Hardy, of Farmington; aunts and uncles, Marion Shaw, and her husband, Frank Jr., of Benton, Peggy Hawes and her husband, Lincoln, of Union, Howard Hardy, of Oakland, Jill Bates and her husband, Randall, of New Vinuyard, Henry "Jack" Hardy, and his wife, Teresa, of Farmington, Donna Caverly, of Clinton, and Vicky MacDonald and her husband, Lawrence, of Windham; three dogs, Toby, Charlie and Lulu; and many cousins and friends.

Visiting hours will be 2-4 and 7-9, Monday, Aug. 13, Lawry Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 14, Moody Chapel, Hinckley, with Rev. David Johnston and Rev. Gary Sinclair officiating.

Burial will follow at the Caverly Family Cemetery, River Road, Clinton. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dale H. Caverly Scholarship Fund, C/O Arthur Thompson Jr., P.O. Box 9, Hinckley 04944.

Veva D. Salisbury

NEWPORT — Veva D. Salisbury, 91, widow of the late Olin B. Salisbury Sr., died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Sebasticook Valley Health Care Center in Pittsfield.

She was born April 25, 1910, in Hartland, the daughter of Alfred L. and Mildred F. (Inman) Crocker.

She resided in Hartland many years before moving to Newport. She enjoyed her family, her flowers, cooking, sewing and her needlepoint. She will be remembered as a loving, devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was predeceased by a son, Olin B. Salisbury Jr.; seven brothers, Alfred, Arol, Hiram, Lawrence, Kenneth, Philip and Reginald Crocker; three sisters, Ada (Crocker) Knights, Estella (Crocker) Nowe and Glennis (Crocker) Thurlow; and a great-grandson, Jared Tucker Elliott.

Survivors include her daughter, Virginia G. Tucker, of Newport; sister, Dorothy Landry, of Newport; her granddaughter, Cathy J. Elliott, and her husband, Lewis, of Hartland; her grandson, Randy H. Tucker, and his fiancee, April Cooley, of Hartland; great-grandchildren, Gretchen Elliott, Meranda Tucker, Anthony Tucker and Adrienne Tucker.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at the D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Village Cemetery, Peltoma Avenue, Pittsfield.

Minerva M. Buzzell

ANSON — Minerva May Buzzell, 88, of Anson, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at the Maplecrest Rehabilitation & Living Center in Madison.

She was born May 30, 1913, in Portland, daughter of Roy and Ida (Edwards) Caldwell. She attended Anson and Madison schools.

Minerva had been a resident of Anson for many years, living in her home in Anson until February of 2001. She moved to Skowhegan and was a resident of the Redington Memorial Home until Dec. 21, 2001, when she came to Maplecrest in Madison.

She and her husband, Linwood O. Buzzell, owned and operated Taylor's Drug Store in Anson for 30 years.

She was a 50-year member of the Rainbow Branch, International Sunshine Society of Anson, a 70-plus year member of the Kennebec Valley Grange of Madison, and a member of the Somerset Pamona, State and National Grange.

Her husband of 49 years, Linwood O. Buzzell, and a brother, Weldon Caldwell, died previously.

Survivors include a son, Clinton Buzzell, and his wife, Helen, of Anson; three daughters, Ramona Everett, and her husband, Alfred, of Anson, Alayne Fletcher, of Waterville, and Roberta Duhaime, of Weston, Mass.; her grandchildren, Steven Everett, and his wife, Jill, of Anson, Susan Gray, and her husband, Barry, of Anson, James Everett, and his wife, Sara, of Skowhegan, Dennis Fletcher, and his wife, Donna, of Norton, Mass., Wayne Fletcher, of Gorham, Deanne Duhaime, of Weston, Mass., Scott Duhaime, and his wife, Marianne, of Bolton, Mass., Ross Duhaime, and his wife, Cheryl, of Apopka, Fla., Angela Friend, and her husband, Stephen, of Anson, and Jeremy Buzzell, of Essex Junction, Vt.; great-grandchildren, Christopher, Jacob, Benjamin, Molly, Joshua, Jordan, Jade, Dawn, Steven, Nichole, Ryan, Aaron, Kaithlyn, Jason, Alexander, Maxwell, Catherine, Sarah, Olivia, Matthew and Isaac; brother, Everett Caldwell and his wife, Doris, of Anson; sister, Irma Russell, of Plymouth, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends and relatives may call from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Giberson Funeral Home, 40 Maple St., Madison. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the United Baptist Church, 43 Maple St., Madison. Interment will be held later in the spring at Athearn Cemetery in Anson.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial contribution to Rainbow Branch, International Sunshine Society of Anson, c/o Florence Welch, P.O. Box 314, Anson 04911; or HealthReach Hospice, 165 North Ave., Skowhegan 04976.

Doris S. Haines

WATERVILLE — Doris Stevens Haines, 79, passed away early Saturday morning, Feb. 2, 2002, at the MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville after a brief illness.

She was born Aug. 10, 1922, daughter of Ernest M. and Stella (Farnham) Stevens of Smithfield.

She married Charles E. Haines, Nov. 25, 1942; he died Dec. 11, 1984. She was also predeceased by a sister, Pauline Dorrian.

Survivors include two sons, Brian Haines of Smithfield and Bruce Haines of Graniteville, Vt.; one daughter, Sharon Wood of Winslow; six grandchildren, Melissa Labbe of Westbrook, Randy Wood of Smithfield, Jason Haines of Smithfield, Shannon Haines of Waterville, Stevens Haines of Longwood, Fla., and Nathan Haines of Graniteville, Vt.; four great-grandchildren.

She attended Smithfield and Norridgewock schools and was a lifelong resident of Smithfield except for several years during the war when she lived in Bath, while her husband and father were employed at Bath Iron Works.

She was a member of the Smithfield Baptist Church, Fairview Grange No. 342, Somerset Pomona, Rugged Cross Shrine & Ameranth. She was instrumental in developing the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She was also active in the State and National Grange during the 1960s when most of the town's volunteer firemen worked out of town; she was taught to drive the town's fire truck to a reported fire and the firemen would meet her at the site. She lived a life of service to her family, her friends and her community. She was always available to take friends to doctor's appointments, grange meetings or just run errands. Her daily trips to Waterville were well known.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at the Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Smithfield Baptist Church. A celebration of her life will be held immediately following at the Fairview Grange Hall in Smithfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fairview Grange or Smithfield Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Veilleux Funeral Home in Waterville.

Dr. Robert Loring Ohler

AUGUSTA — Dr. Robert Loring Ohler, 85, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.

He was born Feb. 28, 1916, in Newton Center, Mass. He grew up in Newton Center, where he was active in scouting and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Newton High School in 1933, from the University of Maine Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in forestry in 1937, and from Harvard Medical School in 1941. While in college and medical school, Bob began a long time association with the Appalachian Mountain Club working as a hutman and later as hut master at several of the AMC huts in the White Mountains. In 1988, at the age of 72, he climbed up to Madison Spring Hut to participate in the hut's centennial celebration, representing hutmen of the 1930s.

He married Priscilla Farrar Arnold of Milton, Mass., Dec. 24, 1939. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific as Chief Medical Officer aboard the destroyer, the USS Orca. He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1976 with the rank of captain, having served as chief medical officer at the Naval Reserve Unit in Augusta for a number of years. Following his active naval service, Dr. Ohler was assistant chief of medicine at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Roxbury, Mass.

In 1950 he moved to Maine to become chief of medicine at the Togus Veterans Administration Hospital (VAMROC) and later served as chief of staff. Among the innovations he brought to Togus was a poison control center for the area.

In 1972, he married Ernestine Dumais after the death of his first wife. Following his retirement from Togus in 1977, he worked at the Belgrade Health Center, for Medical Care Development of Augusta, and later in private practice in rheumatology. He continued his connection with Togus as a consultant.

Dr. Ohler was one of the founders of the Family Medical Institute and was the first Chairman of the Board of the Maine Veterans Home. He was also a fellow of the American College of Physicians. His non-medical interests were numerous. He was longtime president of the Kennebec Valley Girl Scout Council. He was active in the Abnaki Outing Club and led an annual trip to Baxter Park for many years. He loved Mt. Katahdin and was a member of the Baxter Park Advisory Committee. He was a 40-year member of the Augusta Kiwanis Club and was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Winthrop.

He is survived by his wife, Ernestine Dumais Ohler, of Augusta; a son, Jeffrey Ohler and his wife, Patricia, of Auburn; a daughter, Priscilla Penny Markley and her husband, Reed, of Manchester; and three grandsons, Nathan Ohler of Atlanta, Ga., Nicholas Ohler of Ithaca, N.Y., and Keith Markley of Bridgeton.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Augusta, with the Rev. Mike Gendreau, celebrant. Burial will be held in the spring at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Livermore Falls. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made either to the American Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160B, Portland ME 04101-2406; or to the University of Maine Alumni Association, PO Box 550, Orono ME 04473-0550.
