Paul S. Arbo

SCARBOROUGH — Paul S. Arbo, 77, formerly of Waterville, and Portsmouth, N.H., died Saturday morning, Dec. 2, 2000, at Maine Medical Center in Portland following a long illness.

He was born Oct. 22, 1923, in Fitchburg, Mass., son of Roland and Helen (Ross) Arbo, and moved to Waterville in 1936. He graduated from Waterville High School in 1942.

He joined the U.S. Army and fought in World War II, serving in the European Theatre of War from 1944 to 1946. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart, three Battle Stars, Combat Medal (1st Division M Company), and Marksmanship and Sharp Shooter Award.

After the war, he was employed as a police officer for 14 years at the Waterville Police Department. In 1960 he started the Arbo Transportation Trucking Co., which was based out of Portsmouth, N.H. In 1980 he retired to Scarborough.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Alice Arbo, of Scarborough; five children, Paula Jones, of Scarborough, Helene Batchelder, of Stratham, N.H., Kathleen Brown, of Brunswick, Daniel Arbo, of Kittery, and Matthew Arbo, of Scarborough; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours were held Sunday at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland, where a funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, with the Rev. Philip Strout officiating. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville.

Katherin Jones Brinn

FALMOUTH — Katherin Jones Brinn, 46, of 72 Lakeside Drive in Falmouth, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, after a long battle with colon cancer.

Katherin was born Sept. 18, 1954, in Waterville, to Margaret and Lloyd Jones, of Waterville, and graduated from Waterville High School in 1972. After working for many years at Portland City Hall and Fairchild Semiconductor, she returned to school at the Portland School of Art and graduated in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in graphic design.

Married that same year to her husband, Steven, she started her own design firm, Design Concepts in Portland, which she operated successfully for five years and had a growing number of business and nonprofit clients. After her son, Casey, was born in 1986, Katherin moved the office home, so she could become a stay-at-home mom and still maintain a short list of clients. When Casey began school and her second son, Maxwell, was born in 1991, she began what became a very active and passionate role as a volunteer leader in her sons' school systems, starting with becoming president of Free-To-Be Nursery School CO-OP in Portland. Throughout the rest of her life, in addition to regularly volunteering in classes, she assumed numerous leadership roles in the schools and community, most recently as president of the Falmouth Middle School PTO. In 1998, after working in the Falmouth Middle School for a year as a substitute teacher, Katherin established a Parenting Forum to help parents and their children through the difficult middle school years by focusing on the issue of respect. While substituting, she noticed the lack of respect students had for each other, for teachers, and others, causing a resulting lack of confidence and unity. The Parenting Forum still meets today on a monthly basis to address these and other issues that will make these years more rewarding for all involved. Katherin was also very active in school fundraising and is a former board member of The Falmouth Education Foundation.

At the time of her death, Katherin was refocusing on her art work and had just built a new studio to design hand painted floor cloths, create hooked rugs and do other paintings. She is a lifetime member of Haddassah, a member of Temple Beth El Sisterhood, National Council of Jewish Women, and a former board member of Cedars, where she worked on the new facility design committee.

Survivors include her husband, Steven, and sons, Casey, 14, and Max, 9, of Falmouth; her brothers, Tom Jones, of China, Maine, and Arthur Jones, of Waterville; her sister, Elizabeth Caldwell, of Madison Heights, Mich.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hospice of Maine, 693 Congress St., Portland ME 04102.

Funeral arrangements are by the Jewish Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Temple Beth El, 400 Deering Ave., Portland, with Rabbi Braun officiating. A period of mourning will be held Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, at the Brinn's home at 72 Lakeside Drive in Falmouth.
