Dr. Oakley A. Melendy

AUGUSTA — Dr. Oakley A. Melendy, 84, of Westwood Road, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001.

He was born in Augusta, Sept. 30, 1916, the son of Arthur and Marion (Parmenter) Melendy. Oakley was a graduate of Gardiner High School, class of 1933, where he served as class president, Phillips Andover Academy 1933-1935, and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1939, where he served as class president and member of PSI Upsilon Fraternity. He then graduated from Columbia Medical School in 1944.

He started his Medical Residency at Boston City Hospital in 1945-46 and completed it from 1948-51.

Dr. Melendy was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1946-48 and was discharged with the rank of Captain. He opened his medical/ surgical practice in 1951 and worked in partnership with Doctors Shaw, Aslam and Wall. He retired in 1989. He previously worked at Phillips Andover Academy where he was an instructor of chemistry and assistant football coach.

Dr. Melendy was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, longtime member of the Augusta Country Club, was a 1984 inductee into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame for earning 12 varsity letters at Bowdoin College and his many years of amateur golf and tennis accomplishments. In 1986 he received the Central Maine Area Agency on Aging Living Legacy Award for his many years of positive contributions to the community. He was a member of Kennebec County and Maine Medical Association, New England Surgical Society and a Fellow at the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Melendy was predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Joan M. (Hyland) Melendy, in 1991.

He is survived by two sons, Michael J. Melendy and his wife, Christine W. Melendy, of Winthrop, and Mark P. Melendy, of San Francisco, Calif.; two daughters, Mary Lou Seaward and her husband, Brad Seaward, of Pomfret, Conn., and Meredith Tardiff, of Augusta; four grandchildren and several cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Augusta. Burial will be at a later date in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home in Augusta.

Erlon L. Washburn

SKOWHEGAN — Erlon L. Washburn, 67, of Skowhegan, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.

He was born Feb. 21, 1933, in Skowhegan, son of Amon Washburn and Mary Corson and stepfather, Ervin Thibodeau. He graduated from Skowhegan High School and served in the National Guard, 103rd Infantry, Company L, in Skowhegan.

He married Shirley Turgeon, July 28, 1951, in Skowhegan.

He was a carpenter millwright for Local 320 No. 1996 for 40 years, working in construction all over New England.

He was active for many years with the Somerset County Democratic Party and was past chairman. He served on the Skowhegan Board of Appeals; he served for many years for the town of Skowhegan, 15 years on the Community Development Review Board and on Housing and Urban Development. He was an avid sportsman, fishing, hunting, camping, and he loved football.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Shirley Washburn; children, Robert Washburn and his wife, Waneta, of Cornville, Randall Washburn and his wife, Trina, Russell Washburn, Jeff Washburn and his wife, Brenda, all of Skowhegan, Pam Christen and her husband, Donald, of Madison, Patricia Colby and her husband, Charley, of Skowhegan; three brothers, Roger Thibodeau, of Skowhegan, Lloyd Washburn and Wayne Washburn, both of Harmony; three sisters, Ruth Norworthey, Joyce Getchell and Elaine Smith, all of Harmony; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; close friends, Arthur Hoskins, Melvin Brown and Pat D. Washburn, all of Skowhegan; two brothers-in-law, Richard Turgeon and his wife, Sue, of Norridgewock, and Gary Turgeon and his wife, Judy, of Canaan.

He was predeceased by a son, Daniel Washburn, his parents, and one brother, Carlton Washburn.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, with a funeral at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 261 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Spring burial will be at the Southside Cemetery in Skowhegan.

Donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St. Suite 160B, Portland ME 04101-2406.

Mary M. Bolstridge

CORINNA — Mary M. Bolstridge, 81, the wife of Col. Leslie J. Bolstridge, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at a Pittsfield hospital after an extended illness.

She was born Jan. 6, 1920, in Milan, Ga., daughter of Henry and Jossie (Pittman) McRae, and graduated from Telfair County School in McRae and Grady Hospital as a registered nurse in Atlanta, Ga.

She spent much of her life nursing including serving as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps. She had followed her husband throughout his long military career, traveling to more than 25 countries including four years in Japan, four years in Germany and two years in Guam. She held a degree in International Affairs from the University of Maryland at Heidelberg, Germany.

She was a lifetime member of the Corinna Historical Society and a member of the Corinna United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women since 1950. She was a longterm member of Family Services, USAF. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary National Headquarters, Nokomis Lodge, Order of Eastern Star of Newport, and Dexter, East Somerset Pomona, State and National Granges.

Mary was a member of the Corinna Literary Club, Corinna American Legion and the Corinna American Legion Auxiliary. Her hobbies included gemology.

Survivors include her husband, Col. Leslie J. Bolstridge, of Corinna; son, Loren Dewey Bolstridge III and his wife, Cynthia Diver, of Atlanta, Ga.; son-in-law, Earl Anthony Klevins, of Corinna; several nieces and nephews.

Mary was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Ann McRae Bolstridge.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 2, at the Thompson Funeral Home, 30 St. Albans Road, Corinna.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at the Corinna United Methodist Church with the Rev. Diane Danielson officiating. Spring burial will be held later at the Morses Corner Cemetery in Corinna.

Miss Hazel W. Coombs

CHINA — Miss Hazel W. Coombs, 87, of China, died late Friday evening, March 30, 2001, at a Waterville nursing home.

Hazel was born Nov. 29, 1913, in Waterville, the only child of Mabel (Ward) Coombs and Roy Coombs. She was an active member of the China Baptist Church.

Her love for flowers and baking led her to a lifetime of providing flowers for church services and pies and cookies for fundraisers at the fire station and church. Her love for books and the news kept her active at the China Library Association.

A "welcome" mat at her doorstep on Peking Street grew worn as she gathered friends and neighborhood children in her kitchen for social times.

Five years ago, Hazel was unable to live by herself and chose Lakewood Manor Nursing Home in Waterville as her final residence. There the staff and volunteers became her caring family, the home's live-in kittens became her pets. Her weekly visitors, cousins, Thelma Kennedy and Edith Canham, became the highlight of her life.

Survivors include her cousins, Thelma Kennedy, of Vassalboro, and Bob and Anne Wyman, of Unity, special friends in the China Baptist Church Bible Study Group and very special neighbors, Allan and Nancy Pfeiffer and children, and the Maheu family.

She was predeceased by three cousins, Carolyn Lander, Dorothy Antworth, and Edith Canham.

Arrangements for the funeral to be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at the China Baptist Church in China are being made by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home of Fairfield.

Cecil Dyer

FARMINGTON — Cecil Dyer, 75, of Rangeley, died Thursday evening, March 29, 2001, at the Edgewood Rehabilitation Center in Farmington.

He was born in New Portland, Oct. 23, 1925, a son of Leslie Lynn and Laura (Luce) Dyer, and received his education in New Portland schools.

On April 2, 1949, he married Clara Wilbur; she died in 1997.

Cecil was a veteran, having served in the United States Navy during World War II.

He worked as a lumberman and carpenter in the Rangeley area and was a registered Maine Guide. He will be remembered as being able to find a brook trout anywhere where there was water. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his nieces and nephews.

He is survived by a brother, Carrol Dyer, of Hamilton, Mont.; a sister, Minnie Bowker, of Auburn; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery in Rangeley. Service arrangements are by the Wiles Funeral Home in Farmington.

Paul W. Jones

UNITY — Paul W. Jones, 65, of Unity, passed away Sunday, April 1, 2001, at a Waterville hospital.

He was born Nov. 15, 1935, in Jefferson, son of the late Everett W. and Phyllis (Parlin) Jones, and attended Palermo schools.

He married Margaret H. Haskell, June 21, 1958, and they had enjoyed 42 years of togetherness.

He was employed as a truck driver, a bus driver for SAD 3 and was a self-employed woodsman. He enjoyed camping and hunting. His greatest love was spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Margaret H. Jones, of Unity; his children, Paul Jones and his wife, Diane, of Knox, Allen Jones and his wife, Alice, of Unity, Michael Jones and his wife, Lori, of Unity, Dennis Jones and his wife, Cindy, of Unity, Melanie Waterman and her husband, Blake, of Burnham, Valarie Tweedie and her husband, Barry, of Thorndike; grandchildren, Craig and Christopher, Dereck and Elaine, Amy, Adam, and Alissa, Keith and Casey, Blake M. and Katie, and Bryan; his great-granddaughter, Mackenzie; his brother, James Jones and his wife, Linda, of Palermo; his sisters, Sylvia Morias, of Waterville, Sharon Leeman and her husband, Gary, of Palermo, and Donna Haskell and her husband, Steve, of Palermo; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Bill Jones, and a sister, Margaret Mehuren.

There will be a memorial gathering of family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at the Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, Depot Street, Unity. Cremation will take place at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn.

Rev. Dennis J. Knox Sr.

SOLON — Rev. Dennis J. Knox Sr., 45, of South Solon Road and formerly of Libby Hill Road in Gardiner and Anson, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Unit, Waterville, after a long illness.

He was born in Rockland, Aug. 23, 1955, the son of Maynard Knox Sr. and Elizabeth (Morse) Knox, and attended schools in Gardiner and Augusta.

He had been employed by Sonoco in the North Anson plant and had previously worked at Berry's Construction in Gardiner and Consolidated Waste Services in Norridgewock.

Mr. Knox had started his own ministry, a home mission, Anointed Heart Ministry. His favorite scripture passage was Philippians 4:13.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Sheena G. Knox.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene A. (Whipple) Knox, of Solon; three sons, Dennis J. Knox Jr., of Madison, Joey E. Knox and his wife, Becky, of Anson, and Joshua J. Knox, of Solon; a daughter, Tia Decimo and her husband, Joseph, of Solon; a brother, Maynard Knox Jr., of Gardiner; three sisters, Rosemary Mazzulla and her husband, Bill, of Auburn, Shareen Paige, of Bangor, and Barbara Merril and her husband, James, of Richmond; four grandchildren, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Monday, April 2, at the Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where a funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 3. Burial will be held later this spring at the family lot in the Libby Hill Cemetery in Gardiner.

Laurence E. Shea

AUGUSTA — Laurence E. Shea, 89, of Glenridge Drive and formerly of Purinton Avenue, died unexpectedly Sunday, April 1, 2001, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge in Augusta.

He was born in Malden, Mass., Oct. 28, 1911, the son of John and Mary (Lawson) Shea, and graduated from Malden High School in Malden, Mass. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force American Airlines Air Transport Command Group during World War II, transporting troops and supplies to the European Theatre for the war effort, receiving the Victory Medal and the European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign medals in the process.

Laurence was a communicant of St. Andrew's Catholic Church. He had been employed by the Associated Press for more than 25 years and had previously worked for American Airlines as a navigator for several years.

Survivors include his wife, Leila (Campbell) Shea, of Winslow; three daughters, Joan Yakush, of Ocala, Fla., Theresa Kinney, of Chelsea, and Laurelyn Wrigley, of Winslow; two sisters, Helen Shea, of Augusta, and Marion Shea, of Winthrop; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will be held later this spring at St. Mary's Cemetery in Manchester.
