Russell H. Haynes

PITTSFIELD — Russell H. Haynes, 75, died Aug. 2, 2001, at the Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield following a long illness.

He was born June 4, 1926, in Pittsfield, son of Arthur and Lillian (Hodgkins) Haynes. He was a 1945 graduate of Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He retired in 1976 from the Maine Army National Guard with over 22 years of service.

Russell worked for many years at Dexter Shoe, Northeast Shoe and at the Somerset Laundry where he retired in 1991.

He was a 30-year member of the Pittsfield Fire Department, member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9955 in Pittsfield, twice past commander, a member of the Executive Committee and athletic director of the American Legion Post 32 in Pittsfield, past commander of the Somerset American Legion.

He enjoyed bowling, fishing, playing the guitar and dancing with his girls.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Dorothy (Kirby) Haynes of Pittsfield; five children, Richard and Sylvia (Haynes) Thurlow of Lisbon Falls, Nathan and Cheryl Haynes, Rusty and Lillian Haynes, Michael and Cindy Haynes, all of Pittsfield, Randy and Tammie (Haynes) McLaggan of Detroit; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Helen Haynes of Pittsfield; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Reginald Haynes.

A graveside service with full military honors will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. A celebration of life and time of remembrance will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Russell's home at 12 West Street in Pittsfield.

Friends who wish may make memorial donations to the Christmas Project, 3890 Higgins Road, Pittsfield ME 04967. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Brown Funeral Home, 34 High Street, Newport.

Estella N. Thompson

WATERVILLE — Estella Nelson Thompson, 88, of Waterville, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, in Waterville.

She was born May 11, 1913, in Poland, Maine, daughter of the late John and Ava (Edwards) Nelson. She married Julian Page Thompson of Kingfield, Aug. 20, 1936.

She lived most of her early life with her grandparents, William and Estella Edwards, after the death of her mother in 1918. She attended New Gloucester schools, graduating from New Gloucester High School in 1930 and Farmington Normal School with a bachelor of science degree in 1934.

She taught schools at Auburn, Stratton, Skowhegan and Anson.

She was a member of the New Gloucester Congregational Church and former member of the Order of The Eastern Star in New Gloucester and Rangeley.

Her professional memberships included Maine Education Association, National Education Association, and the Maine Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include her husband, Julian, lacking 16 days of having been married 65 years; one daughter, Ava Judith Chandler and husband, Garth, of Bangor; one son, John Alan Thompson and wife, Vicky, of Auburn; three sisters, Audrey Tinkham and husband, Clifford, of West Bath, Glenice Bowie and husband, Maynard, of Wales, Jean Mitchell and husband, Donald, of Vero Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren, Julie Ann Chandler of Cape Elizabeth, Amy Chandler of Eliot, Kristopher Thompson of Rangeley, and Jason Thompson of Waterville; two great-grandsons, Jacob and Nicholas Small of Cape Elizabeth.

At her request, there will be no visiting hours. A funeral will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug., 8, at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 261 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Interment will follow at the Sunnyside Cemetery in Kingfield.

Donations may be made in her name to the American Heart Association, Maine Affiliate Inc., PO Box 346, Augusta ME 04332-0346.

Carroll Kenney

PITTSFIELD — Carroll Kenney, 83, of Pittsfield, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at Birch Grove Nursing Care Center in Pittsfield.

He was born Dec. 6, 1917, in Stetson, son of Harry and Vivene (Childs) Kenney. He worked on area farms during his working life. He was a special person, who never complained and always had a smile for everyone. He loved to go to auctions.

He was predeceased by a brother, Norman.

Survivors include a sister, Rena Cookson of Burnham; two brothers, Wendell Kenney of Gray and Ernest Kenney of Burnham; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Village Cemetery in Pittsfield. Arrangements are under the direction of the D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield.

Roland E. LaCroix

WATERVILLE — Roland E. LaCroix, 80, of Waterville, died early Sunday morning, Oct. 14, 2001, at the Hospice Unit of the Veterans Administration Center at Togus.

He was born Dec. 4, 1920, in Waterville, son of Philomon and Elmina (Duquette) LaCroix. He was raised by Alice Talbot LaCroix, his stepmother, following the death of his mother. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving with the 88th Division, 350th Infantry, in the Italian Theatre of Operations.

He married Lucille Genest, Aug. 24, 1946, and together they celebrated 54 years of married life. She predeceased him Sept. 16, 2000.

He formerly worked as a turret lathe operator, auto mechanic and loom repairman. He was a good neighbor, loved gardening and playing cards.

Survivors include his daughters, Jacquelyn Workman of Waterville, Mrs. Gordon (Kathleen) Taylor of Savannah, Ga., Mrs. Paul (Norma) Vigue and Mrs. Phil (Judy) Chute, both of Waterville; one sister, Cecile Hardy of Waterville, and two brothers, Lucien LaCroix of Waterville and Bert LaCroix of Hollywood, Fla.; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and his beloved cat and companion, Jimmy.

He was predeceased by his parents, eight brothers, Joseph, Philip, Cyril, Antonio, Dennis, Fernand, Raymond and Henry; two sisters, Lucienne (Sister Bernadette OSU) and Alice.

There will be no public visiting hours. Committal prayers and burial will take place Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta at a time to be announced in Tuesday's edition of the Morning Sentinel. Arrangements were made through the Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville.

Kelly Jean MacKenzie

OAKLAND — Kelly Jean MacKenzie, 20, of Oakland, died unexpectedly Friday, Oct. 12, 2001.

She was born March 3, 1981, in Rochester, N.H., daughter of Richard T. and Judith M. (Rafuse) MacKenzie. Kelly attended Oakland schools. She was a member of the National Honor Society, played soccer, basketball and softball, graduating in 1999. After graduation, she toured the world with Cast D 2000 of "Up With People." She was a gifted musician. She was consistently selected as a member of the KVMEC, All State Honors Chorus, and was also selected as a member of the American Choral Directors Association Eastern Division Honors Choir.

Kelly was an active member of the St. Mark's choir and the University Singers. She was a teacher and mentor of great music to many youth in her community. Kelly was enrolled at the University of Maine at Orono at the time of her death.

Kelly will be remembered by her family for the quality family time they enjoyed together and for the many years of boating with her family on Penobscot Bay.

She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, George and Barbara Rafuse, and her paternal great-grandmother, Cornelia (Connie) Estabrook.

Survivors include her parents and a sister, Holly, of Oakland; paternal grandparents, Donald and Joanne MacKenzie of Sidney; many aunts and uncles, William and Robbe MacKenzie of Pembroke, N.H., Gerald and Michelle MacKenzie of Sidney, Kenneth and Renee MacKenzie of Winslow, Wilfred Rafuse of Augusta, Richard and Norma Waceken of Millinocket, David and Alice Rafuse of Somerville, Herb and Sandra Bradley of Waterville, Bonnie Rafuse of Auburn, Richard and Cheryl Schenk, James and Cindy Rafuse of South China, Jeffrey and Diana Rafuse of Belgrade; numerous great-aunts, great-uncles and cousins.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at the parish hall of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Eustis Parkway, Waterville, where a funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16. Burial will follow at the Sawtelle Cemetery in Sidney. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wheeler Funeral Home in Oakland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kelly's name to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 60 Eustis Parkway, Waterville ME 04901.

Alverna W. Parlin

NEW VINEYARD — Alverna W. Parlin, 95, died with her three sons by her side, Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at her home following a long illness.

She was born July 2, 1906, in Vienna, Maine, the daughter of Harry O. and Lena (Allen) Wells, and attended New Vineyard schools.

She married Millard S. Parlin Sr., Aug. 2, 1924; he died March 4, 1988, after 64 years of marriage.

Alverna worked at the Fred O. Smith Wood Mill in New Vineyard for over 50 years, retiring in the mid-1980s. She was a former member of the New Vineyard Congregational Church, member of the Franklin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and former member of the New Vineyard Senior Citizens.

She enjoyed bird watching, cooking, puzzles, making scrapbooks, making afghans, quilts, dining out, spending time at her cottage at Porter Lake and fishing.

She is survived by three sons, Robert E. and wife, Alice H. Parlin, of Farmington, Millard (Sonny) S. Parlin Jr. of New Vineyard, Roger N. and wife, Elizabeth L. Parlin of North Windham; four sisters, Bernice W. Moore of New Vineyard, Sylvia W. Holbrook of New Vineyard, Frances W. Roberts of Windham, and Virginia W. Park of Farmington; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, George and Vinora, three sisters, Marion, Emma, and Esther; and one great-grandchild, Shawn.

Visitation hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Adams Funeral Home, 108 Court St., Farmington.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Old South Congregational Church in Farmington with the Rev. John Gensel officiating. Friends wishing may make donations in her memory to the Androscoggin HomeHealth, 15 Strawberry Ave., Lewiston ME 04240.

Herbert P. Tresham

ST. ALBANS — Herbert P. Tresham, 80, of St. Albans, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at his home.

He was born Aug. 17, 1921, in New Bedford, Mass., was the eldest of the eight children of Herbert and Florence (O'Malley) Tresham, and graduated from New Bedford High School. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the 358th Infantry Regiment. He was wounded in the Battle of Ardennes in Belgium and awarded multiple decorations and citations, including the Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, The Purple Heart and the Expert Rifle/Combat Infantryman Badge.

He married Mary G. Benoit, Dec. 29, 1942; she died April 2001.

He drove a "Post Office on Wheels" for the U.S. Postal Service out of Plymouth, Mass., and then drove truck for the Quinn Freight Co. of Brockton, Mass.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Teamsters Local 653, both of Brockton. He had lived in Brockton until seven years ago when he and his wife came to St. Albans to live with his daughter and son-in-law.

He was predeceased by a son, Daniel, and two brothers, James and Edward Tresham.

Survivors include seven children, Genevieve Duncombe of St. Albans, Michael F. Tresham of Avon, Mass., Mary Alice Tresham of East Bridgewater, Mass., Paul D. Tresham of Weymouth, Mass., Elizabeth DeCosta and Roberta J. McAllister, both of Brockton, and Rayna Rossi of Rochester, N.H.; 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Katherine Foster of Charleston, R.I., Mary Hughes of Brookings, Ore., and Patricia Etchell of Charleston, R.I., and two brothers, Donald Tresham of Plymouth, Mass., and William Tresham of Brockton.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 25 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, Mid-Maine Service Delivery Unit, 72 Main St., Fairfield ME 04937.

Phyllis I. Anderson

WATERVILLE — Phyllis I. Anderson, 85, of Waterville, passed away Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Inland Hospital in Waterville.

She was born Feb. 9, 1916, in Washburn, daughter of Silas and Eva (Flewelling) Easler. She was the third of seven children, Dorothy, Margaret, Gilman, Frank (Buster), Juanita and Basil, all of whom predeceased her.

Phyllis and her family moved to Skowhegan in 1925 and she graduated from Skowhegan High School in 1933.

She married Roland Gerald Anderson in 1937 and moved to Waterville. They had two daughters, Judith born in 1941 and Linda born in 1950.

Phyllis worked at the C.F. Hathaway Co. from 1948 to 1971 at which time she retired to take care of her new granddaughter, Erica, who was the light of her life.

Phyllis was a great cook and loved to make big meals for her family and cookies and muffins for her neighbors. She loved a challenging crossword puzzle or jumble in the daily paper, music and playing the piano. She enjoyed people and loved to have company.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roland, in 1985.

Survivors include her two daughters, Judith Gershon of Martinez, Calif., and Linda Thibodeau of Fairfield; her granddaughter, Erica (Thibodeau) Spaulding and her husband, Scott Spaulding, and the newest light of her life her new great-granddaughter, Ashley Phyllis Spaulding, all of Clinton. Phyllis will be sadly missed by her nieces, Sheila Davis and Lorraine Glidden, her nephew, Francis McAllister, her dear friend and neighbor, Germaine MacDonald, and her cat, Muffin.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at Redington Funeral Home, Park Street, Waterville. Cremation will be at the Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn.
