Walter D. Willette

1918-2002

AUGUSTA — Walter D. Willette, 84, of Augusta, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was born in Presque Isle, Feb. 1, 1918, the son of Dennis and Clara (Tardy) Willette. Walter served in the U.S. Army, was sergeant-at-arms for the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 1 of Augusta and was a member of the American Legion Post 2 of Augusta.

He had been employed at Statler Tissue for 25 years and had also worked for various construction companies across the state. He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Augusta.

Walter was predeceased by his sons, Mike Willette and Jeffrey Willette.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary (Hurley) Willette of Augusta; a son, Patrick Willette and his wife, Sue; a daughter, Missy and her companion, Frank; grandsons, Derek and his companion, Tasha, and Travis and his companion, Crissy, and great-granddaughter "Huner;" his sisters and brothers, Doris Dorety, Rita Corradin, Lenwood Willette and his wife, Pauline, Paul Willett and his wife Kathy, and Shirley Kraft; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. Burial will be in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta. Memorial contributions may be made to the Maine Veterans Home, Cony Street, Augusta ME 04330.

Ethel G. Chadwick

1912-2002

LIBERTY — Ethel G. Chadwick, 90, of Liberty, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast. She was born Nov. 24, 1912, daughter of William and Bertha (Black) Trask.

Ethel was a homemaker for many years on the family farm before becoming employed for several years by the W.C.C.S.A. in Waldo County before retiring. She loved to crochet and knit. For many years she would sell her Afghans, mittens, and sweaters at area stores. She also braided rugs and gave lessons on how to do them. She enjoyed playing bingo and dancing. She lived life to the fullest.

She was predeceased by her husband, Melvin Chadwick, in 1977; son, Douglas Chadwick in 1995; brother, Lyle Trask, and a sister, Mildred Trask.

Survivors include a son, William Chadwick and his wife, Judith, of Liberty and Hobe Sound, Fla.; her longtime companion, Clifford Richards of Liberty; grandchildren, Scott, Daphyne, Lori and husband, Buddy, Wayne, Roxanne, Jonathan and Susanne; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, Lawry Brothers Funeral Home-Gray Chapel, Windsor Neck Road, Windsor, where a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, with the Rev. Patricia Parker officiating. Spring burial will be held at Chadwick Hill Cemetery in South China.

LeRoy E. Engstrom

1977-2002

CORINNA/NEWPORT —LeRoy E. Engstrom, 25, died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, as the result of an automobile accident. He was born April 3, 1977, in Los Angeles, Calif., a son of Stanley and Sandra (Sloat) Engstrom.

LeRoy attended Nokomis Regional High and was employed by Telepower. He enjoyed racing his car at the Unity Dirt Track.

In addition to his parents of Newport, he is survived by his longtime fiancee, Debra King, and two daughters, Haley and Amber Engstrom, all of Corinna; his maternal grandmother, Ruth Engstrom of Newport; and a special father figure, Dale Scripture of Newport. He will be sadly missed by his brothers, Archie, Stanley Jr., and Randy, all of Newport, and Aaron of Panama City, Fla.; as well as many friends and relatives.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Newport, where a funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, with the Rev. Carl Engstrom officiating. Burial will be in Dixmont Corner Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to a scholarship fund for his daughters, c/o Sebasticook Valley Credit Union, Moosehead Trail, Newport ME 04953.

Patricia P. Pomerleau

1927-2002

JACKMAN — Patricia Pamela Pomerleau, 75, formerly of Jackman, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Glenridge Nursing Facility in Augusta following a long illness. She was born April 8, 1927, in Long Pond, the daughter of Leon and Lila (LaFerriere) Pinette. She graduated from Jackman High School. She married Jacques Maheu in 1948. In 1959 she graduated from the Eastern Academy of Beauty Culture in Bangor.

She owned and operated Pat's Beauty Shop during the 1960s. Pat was an accomplished seamstress and was born with a tasteful sense of style. She knit many sweaters and hats for her family over the years. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed bird hunting and fishing.

Her second husband of 20 years, Armand Pomerleau, died in 1990. She is survived by a daughter, Maureen Parrott and husband, Norman, of South Portland, and a son, Robert Maheu and wife, Kathy, of Dover-Foxcroft; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

There will be no visiting hours, a graveside service will be held later in the spring at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Jackman, the date and time will be announced. Arrangements are by Giberson Funeral Home, 18 River Street, Bingham.

Frederick J. Sterns

1908-2002

SKOWHEGAN — Frederick James Sterns, 94, of Skowhegan, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at his home. He was born May 4, 1908, in Bangor, son of Harry L. Sterns and Bessie (Shiro) Sterns, and grew up in Bangor and Hartland. He graduated from Hartland Academy in 1925 and Colby College of Waterville in 1929. He was accepted at Harvard Business School but was unable to attend when his father became ill unexpectedly.

He moved to Skowhegan in 1929 and established Sterns Department Store, which he operated for more than 50 years with his wife of 62 years, Sarah H. Sterns, who predeceased him in 1995. He later helped his son, Richard S. Sterns, before retiring in 1977, when his daughter-in-law, Florence Blaisdell Sterns, took over the business and the premises, which then, and later housed The Village Candle Light Restaurant.

He was part owner of Sterns Department Store in Waterville working with his brothers, George and Herbert, and sister-in-law, Florence Sterns Lobron. The Sterns family was in business in Maine for three generations, approximately 90 years.

Sterns was active in many civic and religious organizations and was a charter member of the Skowhegan Lions Club and President of the Skowhegan Chamber of Commerce, President of Fairview Hospital and Founding President of Redington-Fairview General Hospital after the merger of the two local hospitals. Sterns served on many Boards of Trustees including Pine Tree Council of Boy Scouts and Camp Lown.

He was active in the various Masonic Orders for many years, serving in all the offices, member of Central Maine Shrine Club and Kora Temple. Sterns was a member of the Skowhegan Odd Fellows, member of various town bands in Skowhegan and Madison and played at the opening of the concrete bridge in Norridgewock in 1929 with the Hartland Academy Band. Sterns was a member of various Jewish organizations, including B'nai Brith, the American Jewish Congresses and Beth Israel Synagogue in Waterville.

Survivors include his two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard S. and Florence B. Sterns of Skowhegan and Drs. Harvey L. Sterns and Ronni S. Sterns of Akron, Ohio; grandchildren, Dr. Michael J. Sterns of Emerald Hills, Calif., Pamela Sterns Gartner of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Daniel Sterns of Bellevue, Wash., Susan Blaisdell of Norridgewock, Karen LaCasse of Edgecomb, Nancy Blaisdell Baxter of Skowhegan, Dr. Anthony A. Sterns of Akron, Ohio, Randy Rose Sterns of Belmont, Calif., and George H. Sterns of New Bern, N.C., and 16 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Beth Israel Synagogue, Upper Main Street, Waterville, with Rabbi Raymond Krinsky officiating. Interment will take place at 1 p.m. following the service Tuesday at Beth Israel Cemetery in Bangor.

The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at the home of Richard and Florence Sterns, Norridgewock Avenue, Skowhegan.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Beth Israel Congregation, or to various Masonic or Lions club charities.

Jeannette M. Daigle

1921-2003

MADISON — Jeannette M. Daigle, 81, daughter of William Morrow and Emily (Willett) Morrow died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Russell Park Rehabilitation and Living Center in Lewiston. She was a lifelong resident of Madison and was born March 30, 1921. She graduated from Madison High School, class of 1939, where she participated in both basketball and chorus.

She married Lester Frances Daigle, May 10, 1941. Mrs. Daigle worked at the Madison public school in the school cafeteria department and assisted at the Madison Public Library. She was a homemaker and a mother of five children.

She was a member of Madison's Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and attended St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church, where she was head Reagent and life long member of the Daughters of Isabella. She was also very active in the church's parish council.

Jeannette enjoyed playing cards, reading, and crossword puzzles.

She was predeceased by her husband, who died March 23, 1971; two sons, Dana Daigle, who died in 1985, and Lester Daigle, who died in 1978; nine brothers and sisters, Mattie Fortine, Clara Harnish, Florence Handley, Ethel Redmond, Shirley Morrow, Yvonne Morrow, Louis Morrow, William Morrow, and Harvey Morrow.

Survivors include three children, Mrs. Anne Ricker and husband Sumner of Harpswell, Gloria Johnson of Lewiston, Lou Daigle and wife Dottie of Madison; six grandchildren, Larry LeClair Jr. of Annadale, Va., Adam Johnson of Lewiston, Anne Johnson of Bangor, Jennifer LeClair of Portsmouth, N.H., Peter Daigle of Burlington, Iowa, and Mary Daigle of Salem, Iowa; four great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Mr. Harold Fortine of Boca Raton, Fla., and several other nieces and nephews.

Private funeral arrangements are by Demers-Desmond Funeral Home in Brunswick. Burial will be in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Forrest W. Farley Jr.

1918-2003

NORRIDGEWOCK — Forrest Whitfield Farley Jr., 84, of Norridgewock, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.

He was born in Larone, Nov. 2, 1918, son of Forrest Whitfield Farley Sr. and Serene (Stackpole) Farley. He attended schools in Skowhegan, Fairfield and Portland.

He married Ella Moody in 1937; she died in 1992.

Forrest was a dairy farmer and lumberman, who also enjoyed real estate.

Survivors include six children, Donna Toppenberg and her husband, Glenn, of Vacaville, Calif., Mary Gebhard and her husband, Dan, of Apison, Tenn., Barbara Cadavero and her husband, Richard, of Collegedale, Tenn., Bette Luther and her husband, Richard, of Norridgewock, Robert Farley and wife, Cheri, of Portland, Richard Farley and wife, Jennifer, of Norridgewock; 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Upper Main Street, Norridgewock, with his son Pastor Robert Farley officiating with the eulogy given by Forrest's nephew, Donald Barry DMD. Spring burial will be at East Ridge Cemetery in Cornville.

Those who wish may make donations in Forrest's memory to the Riverview Memorial School Seventh Day Adventist, c/o Principal Susan Strickland, Mercer Road, Norridgewock ME 04957.

Michael Ferris

1920-2003

NORRIDGEWOCK — Michael Ferris died quietly Saturday, Jan. 24, 2003, at his home in Norridgewock. He was born Nov. 8, 1920, in Madison, one of eight children of George and Rose (Hayek) Ferris. Mike's parents left Lebanon in 1910 to give their family a better life in this country. Mike's grandfather ruled a principality of three towns, olive groves and a castle. The family's roots can be traced back to the year 1052 during the period of the Crusades.

Michael attended the Madison school system, graduating from Madison High School in 1939. After high school, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps. During World War II, he served as an artillery maintenance specialist, stationed in Texas, Hawaii and Okinawa. He served in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and in the invasion of Okinawa.

After the war, Michael married his wife of 55 years, the former Virginia Roderick of Skowhegan. He attended the University of Maine as a pre-med major. After graduating, Mike worked for Lumberman's Insurance of New Haven, Conn., as an insurance adjuster. He later attended the University of Connecticut School of Law, graduating in 1958 and passing the bar in both Maine and Connecticut. In 1958 he moved his family back to the Madison/ Norridgewock area where he ran a very successful law practice for 25 years. He was a longtime member and past president of the Madison Kiwanis Club, a member of the Elks Club, the Knights of Columbus, the Somerset Bar Association, and the Maine Bar Association. He also headed the fundraising drive for the Maine Heart Association in Madison. Michael along with Angus King established the Pine Tree Legal Association. In 1977 he was given the honor of being grand marshal of the Father Rasle Days parade.

Michael Ferris was a very generous person who was known to do pro bono work or barter for whatever a client could afford. Many times he would hire people to do odd jobs for him when he knew they were in need of financial help.

A son, Robert Ferris, and brothers, Thomas, Joseph, John and Charles, died previously.

Survivors include his wife of Norridgewock; daughters, Becky Eldridge and husband, Terry, of Chesterville, and Martha Robbins and husband, Gordon, of Norridgewock, a son, Joel Ferris and wife, Denise Frohlich, of Kennebunkport; granddaughters, Julie Smith and husband, Robert, of Mercer, Lila Carolyn Eldridge of Chesterville and Zoe Frohlich Ferris of Kennebunkport; great-granddaughters, Emily and Hillary Barney of Mercer, and great-grandsons, Andrew and Liam Smith of Mercer; brother, Peter Ferris and wife, Beverly, of Madison; sisters, Katherine Winter of Kingfield and Alma Massad of Holland, Pa.; sister-in-law, Jean Ferris of Kingfield; numerous nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Giberson Funeral Home, 40 Maple Street, Madison. A funeral Mass will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church on Main Street in Madison. Interment will be later in the spring at St. Sebastian Cemetery. Madeline R. Higgins

1913-2003

HARTLAND — Madeline R. Higgins, 89, a resident of Sanfield Rehabilitation and Living Center slipped away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at the Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield surrounded by her loving children.

Madeline was born Nov. 19, 1913, in Stevensville, the daughter of Sylvanus and Agnes (Argraves) Grass Roach and attended Fort Fairfield schools.

She married Harold Higgins, June 7, 1952, and moved to Hartland in 1954. She was a homemaker most of her life.

She was a member of the Hartland Full Gospel Church, a former member and past president of the Hartland and St. Albans Senior Citizens.

She enjoyed cooking, especially making her famous "doughnuts" and also loved playing bingo. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her children.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Higgins; brother, Donald Grass; sister, Phyllis Wharton; an infant son, Sylvanus Brown; son, Robert Brown and his wife, Margaret; two grandsons, Robert A. Brown II and Raymond Brown; a great-grandson, Jacob K.D. Hughes.

Survivors include three sons, Dale E. Brown and wife Dianne, Donald Brown and wife Romona of Hartland, Ralph Brown and wife Bonnie of Palmyra; three granddaughters, Betty Foolbear of Fayetteville, N.C., Paula and husband Earl Hughes, Ella and husband Hadley Buker of Hartland; 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, where a funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28. Spring interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Hartland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hartland Helping Hands, c/o Debbie Cooper, 14 Rice Land, Hartland ME 04943.

Charles W. Tolman

1946-2003

HARTLAND — Charles Wendall Tolman, 56, of Hartland, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield. He was born April 16, 1946, in Hartland, son of Clarence and Dora (Gardiner) Tolman of Solon.

Charles attended workshops at Sebasticook Farms Association and was a participant of Special Olympics.

Survivors include five sisters, Viola Hayden of Skowhegan, Shirley Whitman of Hartland, Pauline Patterson of Palmyra, Patricia Reed of Glenside, Pa., and Betty Smith of El Cajon, Calif.; two brothers, James Tolman of Dresher, Pa., and William C. Tolman of Center Harbor, N.H.; an aunt, Thera Finnemore of Hartland; several nieces, nephews and many cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Clarence Jr.

A memorial service to take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Senior Enrichment Program of Sebasticook Farms Association, Detroit Avenue, Pittsfield, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Spring burial will be at South Solon Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.

Donations may be made to the Special Olympics of Maine, 125 John Roberts Road Suite 19, South Portland ME 04106-3295.
